How do you recover from the havoc wrought by history's cruellest plague?

It's June 1349. In Meonbridge, a Hampshire manor, many have lost their lives to the Black Death, among them Alice atte Wode’s beloved husband and Eleanor Titherige’s widowed father. Even the family of the manor’s lord and his wife, Margaret de Bohun, has not entirely escaped.

But, now the plague has passed, the people of Meonbridge must work together to rebuild their lives. However, tensions mount between the de Bohuns and their tenants, as the workers realise their new scarceness means they can demand higher wages and dictate their own lives.

When the tensions deepen into violence and disorder, and the men – lord and villagers alike – seem unable to find any resolution, the women – Alice, Eleanor and Margaret – must step forward to find a way out of the conflict that is tearing Meonbridge apart.

Carolyn Hughes has lived much of her life in Hampshire. With a first degree in Classics and English, she started working life as a computer programmer, then a very new profession. But it was technical authoring that later proved her vocation, word-smithing for many different clients, including banks, an international hotel group and medical instruments manufacturers.

Although she wrote creatively on and off for most of her adult life, it was not until her children flew the nest that writing historical fiction took centre stage. But why historical fiction? Serendipity!

Seeking inspiration for what to write for her Creative Writing Masters, she discovered the handwritten draft, begun in her twenties, of a novel, set in 14th century rural England… Intrigued by the period and setting, she realised that, by writing a novel set in the period, she could learn more about the medieval past and interpret it, which seemed like a thrilling thing to do. A few days later, the first Meonbridge Chronicle, Fortune’s Wheel, was under way.

Six published books later (with more to come), Carolyn does now think of herself as an Historical Novelist. And she wouldn’t have it any other way…

GENRE

In this final chapter, Ron's story concludes from Reflections on the Boulevard (2023). Michael's wish was for Ron to exile himself in the heart of Paris with its beautiful culture and citizens as they protest and fight for the soul of the city. Ron's journey is met with life-affirming friendships and lessons along the way. The final book in the Reflections of Michael Trilogy, which started with A Reservoir Man (2022).

Excerpt

Louie noticed a sign over the door that read, “Be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise.”

Ron pointed to it. “That is the best sign in the store, works that paranoia up. Everyone tries to be nice after they read it. It's good for business.”

Ron explained that the bookstore had had two lives. After World War 1, it attracted artists such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, James Joyce and so many more from the “Lost Generation.”

Joyce’s’ Ulysses was published by the owner of the bookstore, because no one else would publish the book. The style, the length, and the subject matter were not attractive to any publisher.

After World War 2, the store re-opened again with a new owner. The store then attracted many artists from the Beat Generation like Henry Miller, Alan Ginsberg, Boroughs, and so many more writers and artists. The store became a fixture in Paris and, as the years progressed, it became a tourist attraction. More importantly, it became a safe harbor for many artists.

Ron and Louie walked out of the bookstore after three hours in the store. Louie looked exhausted; Ron rejuvenated. Ron invited Louie for another coffee and croissant at the bookstore near the cafe.

Over their coffee, Louie asked if he could come back to the store more often.

“You could live here if you want but you must work here, you know, tend to the store. Louie, what hours can work for your shift?”

When Lady Emma Grace Hastings receives a much-coveted invitation to the most auspicious Christmas party of the season—one that comes with a 10,000 pound prize for the winner of a mysterious game—she cannot believe her good fortune.

But as the guests are assembled at Mistlethwaite Manor, the chilling intent of the game is revealed. Each guest has cause for alarm, because all of them have secrets, and to win the prize money, those secrets must be exposed.

Things take a sinister turn when Emma Grace finds herself caught between her old love and her soon-to-be betrothed. Suspicions abound, and old wounds are opened. The dead body in the study does not help. Nor does the raging winter storm that prevents escape from the manor. Emma Grace must battle her heart, use her wits, and put her sleuthing skills to the test to survive the weekend alive.

Because there is a murderer among them.

And no one with secrets is safe.
