Emma Madison, Master Meddler by Pat McDermott Michener Book Spotlight!

When she ran away in 1947, Jasmine Holmes was young and beautiful. Now she's home again: sick, broke, divorced, her life in ruins—a perfect project for her aunt Emma Madison, master meddler. But small-town secrets live long in darkness, and the ones Jasmine guards may be the darkest of all.

How to fix Jasmine?

True, her reputation as the town tramp was well deserved. When she fled tiny Medford for Las Vegas nine years ago, it was in a cloud of scandal. Once Emma rescues Jasmine from a hospital bed and her niece's eight-year-old daughter from foster care, few townsfolk welcome her return. And when Jasmine recovers and begins nursing the dying wife of her once-supposed lover, Medford erupts in a veritable volcano of gossip.

Lovers from a decade ago appear, then a new suitor. Soon emotions of desire, jealousy, spite and fear roil the once-peaceful community. During her brief stay, Jasmine sets the lives of many on trajectories they never could have expected. And although her own journey may be long and arduous, love and joy wait at the end, thanks to an elderly lady with the remarkable ability to take things gone wrong and set them to rights. Subtly influencing the course of events—watching, waiting, and then pulling the strings with perfect timing—is Jasmine's sage and savvy aunt, the redoubtable Emma Madison

Dear reader:

Have you ever heard of something and thought: "Wow! What a story!" or, "Wouldn't this make a good story?"

In “Emma Madison, Master Meddler", I've stitched together many such stories from a long and interesting life. Fame and fortune are not the reason I wrote this novel. It was because, after bits, pieces and then large chunks of it assembled in my mind, the two main characters - Emma Madison and her niece, Jasmine Holmes - nagged me endlessly to do it! So, it was not so much a project as an itch that needed scratching, with the result being a book.

My background is journalism. You'll laugh when you hear the name of my first employer once I graduated from university! It was a nation-wide newspaper for teenagers called "Canadian High News". After some gentle persuasion they changed the name, and I changed jobs. It was clear that working on newspapers or magazines was not for me because, for a newbie, there was little money in it. I switched to public relations (called "the dark side" by reporters and editors, both of which I was formerly).

After some years learning the ropes, I started Toronto corporate communications firm MarketLink Communications with a business partner. Our firm had a successful run for 25 years, with major clients and many small firms we helped to grow. And during all this time I wrote and wrote: speeches, magazine and newspaper articles, employee and consumer communications, videos, reports and more, most every working day. You can see how it might get to be a habit!

When I wrote "Emma Madison" I was guided by a quote from author/journalist Mark Bourrie. He wrote, “I see no point in writing a book that doesn’t tell a good story, or one that is not driven by fascinating characters.”

So I have done my very best to ensure that “Emma” is not only a novel strong on plot and full of memorable characters, but a good and satisfying read. And as the reader, you will be the final judge of that.

I have three amazing and talented adult children, Carl, Greg and Julia, and live happily on a 65-acre farm overlooking Georgian Bay where I am at work on my next novel.

Read an excerpt

It was 10:20. The social worker from Children’s Aid had

arrived at ten. The doctor and head nurse were there

with her to observe the mother and daughter reunion.

Afterward they absented themselves to the office to

review last moment details before the discharge, or in

cases involving a dependent child, what was commonly

referred to as, “the hand over”.

“What are your thoughts?” the doctor inquired. The

head nurse was a 20-year veteran of the institution.

He was her junior by ten years and had come to value her

opinion

“She hasn’t een a model patient,” the nurse said, in

her first major understatement of the day.

“However, she’s as well as we can get her and

she’ll do better on the outside. As we discussed, so

far as we know the manic episode was a one-time

occurrence. There’s a good chance it might never

 happen again.”

The doctor fanned the sheaf of papers in the patient’s file.

“I see it’s the aunt who’s taking her and the child.

I hope she’s not too elderly. It says

here she used to be a librarian.”

“I hope she’s got some physical strength,” said the

nurse, and then they exchanged looks that

expressed doubt about the physical strength of

 librarians.

Had Emma known about this conversation, it

would have explained why, when she walked into

the reception room used for discharge

purposes, with its sickly green walls and stick

chairs, she noticed that the doctor and nurse

seemed visibly relieved

Was it possible they thought she wouldn’t come?

In fact, they were cheered to see that although her

hair was iron-grey, the aunt seemed to be a strong

physical specimen with no apparent handicaps, at

least half a head taller than the patient. And as

they spoke with her in private, before bringing in

their patient and her daughter who were waiting in

an anteroom, they found she had an equally strong,

 no-nonsense personality.

“Now tell me everything I need to know,” she

demanded authoritatively, then took notes and

asked for explanations as needed. She requested a

repeat of the medications. “I don’t want to use our

local pharmacy. Too many nosy people working

 there.” The doctor willingly obliged.

She didn’t cringe or complain when the final invoice

was presented by the secretary but simply pulled

out her chequebook and wrote a fat cheque. So,

although the aunt was in her sixties, the doctor and

nurse concluded that her vitality and seeming

intelligence boded well for the continued recovery

of their patient. And that was a relief because,

unless medicated, the patient had wreaked havoc

in the wards once she started to improve, and now

they could discharge her into capable hands with a

 more or less clear conscience.

A door opened. Emma turned as soon as she heard

 the familiar sweet, melodious voice.

“Hello, Auntie.”

Emma had carefully composed her face into a

cheerful expression of greeting. Now she was glad

she had. At the very instant she saw her niece she

was overwhelmed by emotions: sorrow and pity and

 a sudden urge to cry.

She stood up from her chair.

She embraced Jasmine, feeling her skeletal

thinness, and held her close for a minute while she

swallowed the lump in her throat. Memories surged

up, bringing tears she suppressed inside tightly

closed eyes.

“Why Jasmine Holmes!” she exclaimed, as she held

her out at arm’s length. “Just look at you, so skinny!

I’m going to take you right home and fatten you

 up!”

Coveting my brother’s girlfriend is one thing, but acting on it is a step too far. It’s too bad it’s a step I’ve already taken.

The first time I met Maggie Sullivan, she was my brother’s guest at Sunday dinner. That should have been enough to keep me away. It wasn’t.

The night I lost control and gave into my passion was also the night of my brother’s arrest for selling drugs—a business I was sure Maggie must have had a hand in.

Overwhelmed with guilt, I seized a chance to try out for Center Stage, a televised singing competition. Winning changed my life.

Now, years later, I’ve returned to Little Falls to reconnect with my family, and Maggie Sullivan has somehow managed to become mayor.

With only twenty-four hours until she’s reelected uncontested, I decide to throw a wrench into her perfect life.

When the race heats up, and old, unwanted feelings surface, I start to realize that Maggie might not fit the box I’ve shoved her into all these years.

Soon, I’m wondering if I want to steal the election, or if the real victory lies in winning Maggie’s heart.

My body was a traitor. I’d spent the last hour staring at the center of his chest instead of his stupid chiseled face, not giving him the satisfaction of making eye contact. What would I see in Grady’s eyes when I glanced up? Twelve years ago, we’d been this close, closer, and those eyes stole a piece of my soul. I couldn’t afford to give any more away.

With a deep breath, I stepped back and stared at him. He was stupidly tall and broad. I couldn’t remember exactly how tall. Six foot five, maybe? Enough to hurt my neck if I was too close, barefoot, and looked up for too long. I squared my shoulders and gave him a sugary smile. “You must be thirsty.” My tone was so sweet it dripped syrup. “All that singing would be hell on your voice. No need to speak.” I held up a hand in the direction of his face. “I wouldn’t want you to strain your precious vocal cords.”

Grady’s brown eyes scanned me, and I tried to decipher the emotion behind them. Amusement and something else I couldn’t place. He chuckled and raised his bottle of water. “No need to worry, Maggie May. I don’t make a living off my voice anymore, so I can let it get as rough as it needs to be.”

The familiar timbre sent an unexpected jolt through me. I hadn’t heard his voice in person since that night. Goose bumps rose on my arms, and I yanked my sweater tighter. “My middle name isn’t May.”

His lips quirked up, unrepentant, and he didn’t respond. Someone tried to get his attention. He shook his head and gave them an apologetic smile, gesturing toward me. “We’re catching up.” The crowd around him thinned back.

“No, we’re not,” I muttered.

His lips quirked again, but he didn’t say anything.

“You’re back in town, then? Trying to make something of your life?” I jutted out my chin and crossed my arms. Any sense of playing nice disappeared. The goose bumps on my skin were from disgust, nothing else. I hated him.

He scanned the crowded bar. “Seems to be a few people who think I’ve already made something of myself.” He shrugged. “But they’re probably easily impressed—give them a glossy surface and they’ll root for anyone.” He directed his pointed gaze at me and sipped his bottle of water. “I heard you’d graduated from ruining one man’s life to taking down a whole town. Little Falls still standing, or have you demolished it as well?”

His mother lived in Little Falls on the opposite side of town to my family. Penny Castillo had put my sign on her lawn during the previous election. Of all the conflicts I had helped to settle over the last four years as mayor, none of them caused my blood to boil like Grady was doing right now. He knew nothing about anything.

Leaning forward on my toes, I said, “I’ve spent the last four years looking after the people you abandoned while you chased fame and fortune.” I raised my eyebrows in a challenge. I’d been the one to help Penny Castillo fix her garage when a windstorm had taken off half the roof; I’d been the one who picked up Trent from jail when he was finally released; I’d been the one to find his brother a job a few towns over when no one else wanted to hire him. What had Grady done? Won a singing contest and disappeared.

“Only four years?” His intensity drilled into me. “What was Trent’s sentence again?”

I hated the heat creeping into my face.

Rage.

The heat was from rage and not humiliation. “It’ll be me looking after them for another four years twenty-four hours from now.”

“What are you talking about?” His sharp gaze turned curious, thoughtful.

My jaw ached from holding back the diatribe threatening to explode out. “I’m running uncontested for another term as mayor of Little Falls.”

Grady pinched the bridge of his nose and then looked toward the ceiling. “Uncontested?”

“That’s right. Uncontested,” Lila said, appearing out of nowhere to throw her arm around my shoulders. Her words were slurred, but I was so glad for the backup, her level of drunkenness didn’t matter. “It’s because she’s the best fucking mayor in any town anywhere.”

Throwing back his head, Grady laughed. “In any town anywhere?”

With a frown, Lila used one finger and pressed it into his broad chest. “Yes! God. Why do you have to be such a hot prick?”

I clamped my hand over Lila’s mouth. In the morning, Lila would regret those words. “She meant the prick part. The hot part is the Jell-O shots talking. Everyone in this bar is hot to her right now.”

“What makes you so sure no one is going to run against you at the last minute?” Grady’s eyebrows lifted, and he raised his bottle to his lips again.

Lila laughed through my hand and removed it from her face. “Because they’d have to own property in town, get enough supporters or file as an independent, and they’d have to think they could beat Maggie. No one is that dumb or that desperate.” Considering how drunk Lila appeared to be, I was impressed with how smoothly her little speech spilled out of her. “And,” Lila added, holding up her finger, “we know everyone who fits the criteria, and they’re not running.” She cocked an eyebrow at Grady and flicked out a hip. “Maggie’s got it in the bag.”

On instinct, I wanted to correct Lila, but the expression on Grady’s face made me hold my tongue. Technically, Lila wasn’t wrong, but I didn’t like the way Grady’s gaze turned calculating as it dragged across us. He chuckled to himself, and a hint of amusement lit his face.

A Hispanic woman I didn’t recognize appeared at the edge of our circle. “Sorry to bother you, Mr. Castillo. But we were hoping to get a selfie and an autograph? You’re like the biggest celebrity around here.”

“Sure.” Grady half turned toward his fan. The smile on his face had faded at the request. “Ladies.” Grady pointed his water bottle at us. “I’ll be seeing you around. I bought some prime real estate in Little Falls. Looks like we’ll be neighbors.”

In the near future, political and cultural divisions have pushed America to the brink of civil war over States’ rights.

Daniel Ridley is a newly ordained missionary, raised in the heart of the separatist South and in ignorance of the broader world. He is sent to Boston as a missionary for the Christian Nationalist Evangelicals to preach the Word of God and to advocate for a government based on religious scripture. He’s not sure why God chose to burden him with same-sex attraction, but he’s confident his faith will give him the strength to resist that temptation. But he’s not prepared for the hostility he faces up North, and his secret mission—to find an elusive killer and bring him to justice—only complicates his task.

Jaxtyn Keller is a young gay man and perpetual college student who leads a Buddhist worship group at his university in Boston. He believes everything in the universe is connected, and everything happens for a reason. Unlike most of the citizens in his terrorism-plagued city, he’s convinced the only way to hold the country together is for both sides to truly see each other.

The two men meet by chance, and each sees in the other an opportunity to achieve his goal.

As the national crisis accelerates, however, Daniel’s cherished beliefs collide with the harsh reality of separatist violence, and he is soon torn between duty to his church and his growing feelings for Jaxtyn. When their lives are threatened, the two men must find a way to overcome their differences and accept their love for each other, while they fight to both save themselves and prevent a civil war.

Prologue

“This is not a test. Take cover immediately.”

Daniel’s cheek was squished against the bathtub wall. He breathed through his mouth while Jaxtyn—on top of him—frantically tugged at the blankets to cover their heads. Outside, sirens wailed, urging action. Through the closed bathroom door, Daniel could hear the announcements from the wall screen in Jaxtyn’s bedroom.

“This is not a test. Take cover immediately.” The warning repeated again and again, first in English, then Spanish, and then several more languages Daniel didn’t recognize. Jaxtyn’s foot slipped against the tub’s wall, and his elbow dug into Daniel’s ribs. “Sorry,” he mumbled, his coffee-scented breath puffing against Daniel’s face.

“This is not a test. Take cover immediately.”

God was punishing Daniel. That much was certain. Not even two months into his first mission, he’d failed to bring any of Boston’s sinners to Jesus, and—worse, much worse—he’d violated God’s sacred plan by succumbing to his own personal demons. Had it only been five minutes earlier that he’d condemned his soul to hell? Had he really almost kissed Jaxtyn?

Sure, it was a furtive, spontaneous thing, and in his panic, he’d pulled away before it truly began. But still. Did he really think he could flaunt God’s will? Of course he couldn’t. He’d failed. A spectacular, final descent into sin, and not five minutes later God announced his wrath through…whatever this was.

“This is not a test. Take cover immediately.”

How had his life spiraled out of control so quickly? Only six months earlier, he was secure in his faith and his future, safe and cocooned in the loving community of his missionary college, confident and eager, ready to work God’s will in the world. And now this.

“This is not—” The announcement cut off, immediately replaced by a series of shrill, sharp blasts. Outside, the sirens shut down, and an ear-splitting steady alarm took their place.

“Radiation detected! This is not a test. Take cover immediately.”

Above him, Jaxtyn sucked in a breath and squeezed lower into the tub, pressing more tightly against Daniel.

Daniel closed his eyes and began to pray.

Meet the Author

Author John Patrick is a Lambda Literary Award finalist living in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, where he is supported in his writing by his husband and their terrier, who is convinced he could do battle with the bears that come through the woods on occasion (the terrier, that is, not the husband).

An introvert, John can often be found doing introverted things like reading or writing, cooking, and thinking deep, contemplative thoughts (his husband might call this napping). He loves to spend time in nature—“forest bathing” is the Japanese term for it—feeling connected with the universe.

But he also loathes heat and humidity, bugs of any sort, and unsteady footing in the form of rocks, mud, tree roots, snow, or ice. So his love of nature is tempered—he’s complicated that way.

John and his husband enjoy traveling and have visited over a dozen countries, meeting new people, exploring new cultures, and—most importantly—discovering new foods.
