Erin snorted quietly. “Meet him? When would I ever meet your landlord?”

“Right now,” replied her grandmother, as though it were obvious. “I need you to take my rent up to him.”

“What?” gasped Erin. “Absolutely not. I am not going up there to check him out, Grandma. I’m sure our paths will cross eventually.” She added under her breath, “And I’m sure he’s not as ‘handsome’ as you say he is.”

“Get up, Erin. My rent check is already made out. It’s under the saltshaker on the table.”

Erin sat up straight and crossed her arms, feeling like a petulant child. “No, Grandma, I’m not going up there.”

Her grandmother rubbed her hands together, then looked up at Erin with a crinkle in her brow that was designed to elicit sympathy.

“Honey, I really need you to take it. It’s almost the end of the month, and I forgot to give it to him when he came for his visit. It’ll be late if I mail it. You know I would take it up there myself if it weren’t for my arthritis.”

“I’m sure there’s a grace period,” replied Erin, already feeling her resolve weaken. “Or you can have Dad do it when he comes over tomorrow.”

“Please, Pumpkin.” The crinkles in her forehead deepened masterfully. “I would sleep a lot easier knowing my rent is paid.”

Erin never could resist a “Pumpkin” plea from her grandmother. She knew she had no choice.

“He’s probably not even up there,” said Erin, pulling herself up and walking reluctantly to the table where the check lay, mocking her. She picked it up and slipped it into the back pocket of her jeans. “There’s probably a mail slot or some basket for rent checks up there, now that he’s here,” she reasoned, walking to the door. “Your devious little scheme to have me meet this mysterious Mr. Abbott is not going to work, you know.” Erin reached for the doorknob. “I’ll be back in a minute, Grandma. Prepare to be sorely disappointed.”

She could hear the old woman chuckling from her chair as she closed the door behind her.

Shaking her head, Erin walked up the three flights of stairs to the apartment where the allegedly gorgeous Mr. Abbott resided. Half annoyed, and half amused, she wished she could have just a fraction of her grandmother’s spunk when she turned twenty-seven later that year, let alone when she was in her eighties.

As she climbed up the last few steps to the third floor, she scanned the area all around the door marked 3A for a mailbox or a slot for dropping off rent without success. Too soon, she thought. The poor guy hadn’t even gotten himself situated yet, and her grandmother wanted her to stalk him.

Taking a breath, Erin raised a fisted hand and gave the heavy wooden door three strong knocks. She would wait about five seconds, and, if there was no answer, she would return to her grandmother’s apartment victorious.

Two seconds had gone by when the door opened. “Can I help you?”

Damn it. He was gorgeous.

Romance Recap: A Thousand Summer Secrets By Kelli A. Wilkins!

www.KelliWilkins.com

Hi everyone,

As the year winds down, I’m sharing a look back at my fourth gay romance, A Thousand Summer Secrets. I’ll talk about the characters, their troubled relationships, the origin of the story, and more.

Let’s get started with the blurb:

A Thousand Summer Secrets

You can’t outrun your past…

Ten years after being disowned by his family for being gay, Eric Warren pays a visit to his family’s summer cabin. It’s his last attempt at reconciliation before moving on. But a surprise from the past is waiting for him.

Eric’s intolerant brother, Jamey, has several friends staying at the cabin for the weekend, including Matt, Eric’s boyhood friend and secret crush. The years haven’t faded their mutual attraction, and they quickly reconnect. But Eric is hesitant to get romantically involved. He’s emotionally broken and scarred from his traumatic past.

As Matt tries to help Eric, Jamey goes out of his way to sabotage his brother. And when the weekend events take a disastrous turn, Eric finds himself at a crossroads.

Should he follow his search for love and acceptance with Matt? Or leave the past behind forever?

Before I talk about the characters, let’s talk about the title. Yes, as you may have guessed, this book is filled with secrets (and lies). Are there “a thousand” secrets? I’m not sure, but I do know the characters are keeping secrets from each other and themselves. Everything isn’t exactly what it seems, and there’s plenty of family and relationship drama to fill a weekend.

As for the title itself… Occasionally I have trouble coming up with titles, but not this time. Many years ago I was mindlessly fooling around with magnetic squares of different words and strung together “thousand summer secrets”. I thought it would make a good title, so I wrote it down.

Originally I thought I’d use the title for a story about two female best friends reconnecting during a week at the beach. That book never materialized. But when I wrote about two male friends reconnecting over a July Fourth weekend, I decided the title fit the story perfectly!

When I wrote the book, I deliberately set the story in a rural cabin during a long weekend. Why? To build drama and tension. Basically, I threw several characters who don’t get along in a small space and forced them to deal with each other, for good or bad. You never know what they’ll do or say next. (If anyone has ever been “stuck” with people you can’t stand for a long weekend, you know what I’m talking about.)

Everyone in this story has flaws they’re working through (or they should be!). Jamey has anger issues (for starters). His friend Dave is a homophobic jerk. Eric is in AA, harboring a lot of guilt, and has low self-esteem. Matt is the stable one in the group and tries to make peace between everyone. But after a while, he realizes it’s an uphill battle for Eric, and Eric might be better off without his cruel, dysfunctional family.

When I was writing, I wanted the characters to realize it’s okay to walk away from people and situations that make your life miserable. Just because you’re related to someone (or dating them), it doesn’t give them the right to bully you or treat you like crap. Life is too short to be around uncaring, intolerant people, and it’s within your right to leave them behind, move on, and close the door to them forever.

As Eric tries to come to grips with his past, he needs all the love, support, and help he can get. He was disowned by his parents when he was 20 years old, and left to fend for himself. Despite his attempts at reconciliation, his family wants nothing to do with him. Why? Because he’s gay.

Unfortunately, this situation is all too common in the LGBTQ+ community. Children and teens are facing bullying, hatred, and worse from their relatives, in their schools, and on social media—all because they don’t “fit in” with the “norm” of society. I based Eric’s backstory on several true stories I heard from gay friends and coworkers. Many times the LGBTQ+ person decides the only way to be happy is to leave their biological family and find a new family in the LGBTQ+ community.

Eric’s rejection by his family wounds him deeply and feeds a lot of his self-esteem issues. Matt’s family supports him, but he’s still not completely comfortable being “out” in public. In the end, they both realize that what other people think doesn’t matter—accept them or not—they’re not going to hide who they are (or who they love) for anyone or any reason.

And that’s how it should be, because love is all that matters.

Until next time, happy reading!

“You two garnered a lot of attention when you left the club last night. Lester also

confirms you were at the marina together, and a resident of the RV park says you two had a

physical altercation.” Her hands went to her round hips and she laughed. “You managed to upset

both ends of the social class scale last night. That’s a gift.”

The stories that news and gossip spread like wildfire in small towns were not

exaggerated. Not wanting to play my hand either way, I simply nodded. “I suppose.”

Kelsey moved to stand in front of me. Her green gaze stared into my brown eyes for

several moments. “I don’t believe for one second you were involved. You had no reason to.”

Then, she faltered a bit. “Right?”

Excerpts for blog:

Vadom’s Journey

“What’s going on?”

“It’s Lightning,” Shorty said, shifting so Vadom could see inside the stall. “This is her first foal, and it don’t look good. Walker isn’t happy.”

Donnel raised his voice. “Do you want me to ride for the veterinarian? I hear tell they have one in Sommerville.”

Walker shook his head. “That’s twenty-five miles away. This will be over before you get back. One way or another.”

The mare groaned in agony and tried to wallow in the straw, but Petey lay across her neck, holding her on her side. Walker had discarded his jacket and had his shirt sleeves rolled up.

Lightning moaned and thrashed.

Vadom’s heart clenched in sympathy for the mare. “Mr. Walker,” he said softly.

“Don’t bother me unless you can help,” Walker snapped.

“I can.”

Five sets of eyes turned to stare at him.

Walker pointed at Vadom. “Tell me what you can do.”

Vadom swallowed hard. He didn’t want to expose his talent, because he couldt explain what he could do with horses. He could be labeled a heathen. “My father was a horse master on the estn’ate we served in London. He taught me a great deal, and I helped with many foalings.”

“We should get the boy’s father,” Petey said from where he crouched over the mare.

“No time.” Walker motioned for Vadom to enter the stall. “Her name is Lightning. I would choose her over the foal if it comes to that.”

“Shorty said it’s her first?” Vadom asked as he assessed the situation.

“Yes. By Duke, my Palomino stallion.”

“I haven’t met Duke,” Vadom said, not realizing that sounded odd.

The mare groaned, and he felt her pain to his bones. “You poor girl,” he murmured, pressing his hands to her cheeks as he attempted to quell her panic and help her find calm. The pain was another issue.

“What do you need?” Mr. Walker asked.

Vadom never took his eyes away from the mare’s wide gaze. “Does your wife have any willow bark? It would be good to dull the pain.”

“She does. I’ll get it.” Walker rushed from the barn to retrieve the painkiller.

“Shorty, will you do something for me?” Vadom asked.

“Sure thing.”

“Boil some water for the willow bark and steep a small amount. Put a generous amount of sugar in the water and bring it to me. She’ll take it better if sweetened, and she could use the energy,” Vadom instructed. “Petey, I need you to move to the other side and lean forward on her neck so I can reach her belly.”

“Why do you need to do that?” Donnel asked.

Vadom finally felt he had a connection with the mare and could look away from her eyes. He glanced at Donnel. “I will palpitate her side to see how the foal is positioned. I’ll show you.” Lightning was still in terrible pain but breathing easier. The willow bark would help if he could get her to take some of it.

Petey shifted above her, keeping pressure on her neck so she wouldn’t stand, and Vadom ran his hands over her belly, maintaining a steady stream of low whispers all the while, making sure she could hear him.

“She wants to stand,” Petey said, “but the pains were so bad her knees gave out the last time. She don’t need to be fallin’.”

Vadom nodded as he pressed on her belly with gentle fingers. The life inside was … two. “Twins,” he said aloud.

“Now, how would you know that?” Jacob asked, his voice thick with skepticism.

Vadom thought fast. “Hooves,” he quickly offered. He couldn’t tell them he knew any other way. “I feel more than four hooves.”

The Grumpy Guardian’s Redemption

Excerpt # 1

Liam walked home from the general store with only a few pieces of peppermint in his pocket. He hoped to sweeten Millie up a little with the candy.

When he got back to the house, he decided to draw up some of his plans to show Sheriff Smith. At the table, he spent the next few hours outlining everything he had in mind: the school building, housing for a teacher, school supplies, how to approach the people so as not to offend them, along with separate lists for each heading. By the time he finished his notes, he had a terrible headache.

“Millie,” he called.

“Yes?” She stuck her head out from the kitchen.

“Do you know what I should take to get rid of a headache?”

“You shouldn’t be working so hard with that pen. You aren’t accustomed to labor, so you must be exhausted,” she said, her scolding ruined by a teasing grin. “Let me get you some tea and a wedge of sweet cake. That will be just the thing.”

He chuckled, thinking he’d planned to sweeten her with peppermint, and she seemed to have the same idea. “Are you bribing me with sweets?”

She smirked and disappeared into the kitchen.

He checked the time on his pocket watch. Scooter should be returning soon.

Millie reappeared with a tray and deposited it on the table at his elbow. “There you go.”

He looked from her to the tray. “Tell me the truth. Will this help my headache?”

“Eat the cake, drink your tea, and get some rest in your chair. Take a little nap, so I can have some peace in the house.” Her tone was chiding, but she gently brushed some lint off his shoulder as she spoke. He enjoyed the contradiction. She fascinated him.

EXCERPT #2

Liam held up his hands. “That’s all. You can cook and care for the sick, and I don’t have to worry about conversing with you. I was afraid you would be looking for a husband, and I wanted to ensure you understood that I’m unavailable.”

She visibly shuddered and made a scoffing sound. “I’m glad yer pleased, but believe me, if I was lookin’ for a husband, you’d be my last choice.”

His pride made him ask, “Why do you say that?”

“’Cause yer a hermit and don’t like people. I almost didn’t come when Sheriff Smith asked, but you don’t seem so bad.” She gave him a side-eye and stood. “I like your kitchen.” She picked up their empty bowls and left him sitting there.

Her matter-of-fact attitude was refreshing. He found himself grinning when he called after her, “Leaving the table before everyone is finished is impolite. You’re breaking an etiquette rule.” He held his breath, waiting to see how she would respond.

She stuck her head back in the room and simply glared at him.

He had to hide a smile behind his hand while he watched the muscles in her jaw work. This was very out of character for him, deliberating aggravating a lady, but he found he enjoyed riling Millie. “What?”

Her teeth clicked as she stepped fully into the room, crossing her arms over her chest. “What’s etiquette? If you continue to use your highfalutin words, I’m going to believe you’re an ignoramus spy trying to steal our freedom. We don’t have much up here on the mountain, but it means a lot to us.”

He coughed and wiped his mouth with the napkin to keep from laughing out loud. She was adorable. “Millie, etiquette is how you behave around other people. Now, where did you learn about an ignoramus spy?” This was the most fun he’d had talking to someone in years. Maybe he’d write Dr. McMahan a thank you note for sending Millie Norton to him.
