Historical Fiction, American Civil War Spy Novel

Politics, Friendship, or Greed? Which of these was the true author of the Confederate conspiracy to decapitate the Union?

The Absolution of Mars by T.F. Troy is a masterful blend of historical fiction, human drama and moral exploration. Set against the backdrop of a racially fraught period in American history, the story does not back away from the harsh realities or racial biases of the day.

The narrative introduces Jemm Pender, a former slave with a superior intellect, who rises to become a key agent in the National Detective Police Force. Jemm is tasked to trace the movements of J. W. Boyd, a Confederate spy working out of Canada.

From its intriguing opening scene, where playful dialogue among children hints at deeper mysteries, the story captivates with a blend of vivid detail and emotional depth. Jemm's quest intertwines with his wife Marnie and Aunt Cordelia, both blessed with remarkable capabilities that are being lost to the scientific thought of the day.

Troy tackles difficult topics with honesty and precision, creating moments that are as painful as they are profound. The prose is rich and evocative, with dialogue that breathes life into the characters and their struggles. The Absolution of Mars is a poignant, thought-provoking exploration of history, identity, and humanity, recommended for readers seeking depth and nuance.

The Absolution of Mars

Excerpt Two:

Before the men could even grab Boyd, the sergeant is on him, searching his pockets, pulling out a billfold with more than $1,000 dollars in it, a red journal, and three newspaper clippings.

The other two soldiers grab Boyd by the armpits, his legs dangling and dragging behind him, unconcerned about favoring the leg in the splint.

Boyd sees red, then white. As they lift him up, he comes to and feels his neck bend awkwardly to one side. Nothing is working.

Boyd sees red then white. As the soldiers pull him up the steps to Garrett’s porch, he comes back once again. He tries to spit up the blood and phlegm gurgling in his throat, but is unsuccessful. He starts to choke.

Boyd sees red then white. He coughs up blood and wakes. His breath gurgles, as he continues to spit blood and phlegm from his mouth. The lieutenant stands over him.

“The wound looks fatal,” he says to Boyd. “Do you wish to make a last statement.”

Boyd looks at him, realizing his situation, and tries to nod head but is not successful.

“Smith, Smith is, paid...paid companion,” Boyd says, as blood flowed from the corners of his mouth. His eyes roll back in his head. “Not a part of this.”

Boyd sees red, then white.

One of the two soldiers who had carried him, speaks up. “Corbett grabbed some personal belongings,” he says.

“True,” says the sergeant. “Lookey here, what we got. More than $1,000 in U.S bills, plus some clippings here.”

“Garrett, I need some brandy, a sponge,” the lieutenant says. “I want a final confession.”

Richard Garrett dutifully steps inside the house, his frightened family and manservant still on the porch as the first pink and grey slivers of dawn can be seen on the horizon.

Boyd sees red, then white.

“Anything else?” the lieutenant asks the sergeant as Garrett steps inside, but the sergeant ignores him.

“I said anything else, sergeant!” the lieutenant shouts louder, bringing Boyd back to consciousness.

“Journal. My journal,” Boyd says, passing out again. He comes to as Garrett applied the brandy to his lips. “Journal explains,” he says, as his eyes rolled back in his head. “Bell, Bell.”

“Ask Not for Whom the Bell tolls,” the lieutenant says, quoting John Donne’s immortal poem and hoping to give a man he saw as an actor a great last line.

“He musta dropped that journal in the barn,” the sergeant says.

Boyd tries to shake his head and coughs. Blood begins flowing freely from the corners of both lips.

Boyd sees red, then white.

His brother comes down the steps of his home in Maryland and smiles at him. His mother comes out from the kitchen, a concerned look on her face. “Why?” she asks, as Boyd is jolted back to consciousness.

Boyd sees red, then white. A sharp pain comes from the base of his neck, as he opens his eyes and sees the lieutenant.

“Tell my mother I died for my country,” Boyd says. “Raise my hands. Please raise my hands, that I may see them one last time” he pleads.

The soldier that helped carry him to the porch raises his hands up to Boyd’s gaze, and Boyd shakes his head slightly.

“Other, other side,” he gasps.

The soldier turns Boyd’s palms toward him, and the man known to the Garrett family as Captain Boyd whispers his last words on earth. Words that would be later used to confirm his identity.

The Fourth Kinetic

Clairvoyants Book 1

by Brady Moore

Genre

 YA Fantasy

In this world, there are four strains of clairvoyants: Kinetics who can move objects with their minds, Prophets who have involuntary visions of the future, Readers who can delve into the innermost thoughts of others in an instant, and Aural who can transfer their consciousness to control the bodies of others.

At just 17 years old, Rion Grean is a Kinetic with no knowledge that he is not alone in his abilities. His protective mother had kept them constantly moving, even going as far as refusing to tell Rion about his father, whom he never met.

However, when an accident separates them, Rion finds himself being pursued by a covert militaristic force that sees his kind as dangerous anomalies in society. Suddenly thrust into a world filled with different factions of Clairvoyants, Rion must navigate through alliances and betrayals to determine who he can trust.

Despite his natural talents and intelligence, Rion has always struggled to make friends and find purpose in life due to his sheltered upbringing. But as he faces challenges outside of his comfort zone, he learns the true meaning of friendship and family.

This is not a typical story of good versus evil; it is a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and the struggle to coexist in a society that fears what it cannot understand.

“What’s the problem, Officer?”

Her voice sounds polite as can be. But still, the officer stops and leans over the hood of the car with a vacant grimace. Slowly, he scans the inside of our vehicle like he’s searching for something specific.

“Someone called in a stolen SUV,” he grumbles.

My heart freezes. I can feel the nervous perspiration building along my brow. I’ve never been in a car that’s been pulled over, but I’m pretty sure they’re supposed to ask for license and registration first.

“There must be some mistake.”

This time, there’s an unsubtle belligerence to Mom’s tone. It’s the same familiar, faulty twinge her voice has when she’s asking me a rhetorical question after I’ve pissed her off.

“Out of the vehicle. Both of you.”

My eyes grow wider when I notice his hand hovering over the taser along his belt. Mom turns to me and our gazes lock. My chest continues to thump until she gives me a fervent nod and gentle smile.

“It’s okay,” she whispers before opening her door.

The look in her youthful brown eyes is one I’ve never seen before, and I can’t quite pinpoint its nature. Is she worried? Angry? Perhaps both?

“Hands on the vehicle,” the state trooper barks, barely a second after I’ve stepped into the cool air.

I glare into his tinted frames with a fearsome snarl, but do as he says.

“Are you carrying any firearms?”

“No,” Mom groans.

As soon as she has her palms placed against our vehicle’s crimson shell, the officer begins rigidly patting her down from her shoulders to her ankles. I can feel my blood boiling every time his hands slap against her.

“You’re under arrest,” he says, as if Mom has done something to provoke his anger.

My eyes nearly jolt from the sockets when he pulls out his handcuffs and yanks Mom’s wrists behind her back.

“What for?” I scoff as I release my hands from the car and rush for the other side of the SUV.

“Stop where you are, right now!” the officer shouts.

My footsteps cease. My intense glare hasn’t diminished, and my fists are still clenched. I’m mere feet from Mom and the officer. He has one hand clamped around my mother’s wrists, and the other clasping the handle of the gun inside its holster.

“Get on the ground and put your hands on your head!”

I don’t budge.

“I said, on the ground, now!”

He yanks the gun from his belt and points it toward my chest. My heart is thumping, and my teeth grind between my tightened lips. I’m certain I could mentally rip the weapon from his grasp, but I don’t want to risk Mom’s safety. As I slowly un-ball my fists and begin to raise my hands , my gaze finally drifts to Mom. There’s a strange look of stern desperation on her face, but I can sense a sureness beaming from her stare and into mine.

The sun bares down. There is still a chilling breeze in the air, but I feel like I’m in a sauna. I finally begin to lower my knees to the ground, but I keep my focus on Mom. Her eyes grow more fearsome as the state trooper steps forward, his gun still drawn. My head is fluttering with questions that I don’t have time to ask. My heartbeat races more rapidly, and the sweat on my forehead seems to flood my face like I’ve been doused with a bucket of water.

Then…it happens. Mom makes one quick nod. It’s the last gesture necessary to cease my frantic mind. The look in her eyes is as unrelenting as any look I’ve ever seen from anyone. She plants an elbow into the officer’s nose. Once he clutches his face, she dives for the ground.

It’s as if my heartbeat has ceased, and everything is moving in slow motion. My face molds into an intense grimace as I focus on the officer’s frame like the rest of the world is a black void. He releases his hand from his bloodied nose and points his gun forward. A new sensation surges through my body. It is a feeling I’ve never had before when attempting to use my abilities. Fear, nervousness, desperation, even anger—they are all there. I can feel adrenaline coursing through my veins, and my insides flaring like my chest is an overheated tea kettle.

Without hesitation, I fling my arms forward with fingers splayed. Invisible energy seems to shoot from my mind, and through my outstretched limbs, with the ease of a blink. The officer zings into the air like he’s a baseball being smacked by the bat of an All-Star slugger. His body curls like a stuffed animal as he flies backward and slams against the windshield of his police car.

  • Q: What inspired you to write Through the Veneer of Time?

  • A: My experience with Past Life Regression (PLR) felt like time travel—vivid and intense, filled with an explosion of colors, sounds, smells, and textures. Though my session ended abruptly and left the story incomplete, it profoundly impacted me and sparked this blend of Irish time travel romance, historical suspense, and FBI mystery.

Q: What can readers expect from your novel?
A: The plot bridges past and present, weaving a suspenseful love story with a dark historical thriller. Readers will encounter danger, love that transcends time and space, and a heroine who must confront her past life and buried secrets to reclaim her future.

Q: How do you approach writing such multi-genre stories?
A: For me, writing is like carving stone. I start with a rough draft, then refine each scene, layering in emotions, historical details, and suspense. I often listen to music when I write. It helps me connect with my characters, especially during dark or emotionally charged moments.

Q: What was the hardest part of writing this book?
A: Writing the serial killer's perspective meant exploring the darkest corners of the human psyche. Balancing themes of trauma and redemption for my heroine was equally challenging, especially in one unconventional scene where the hero must make a morally gray choice to save her. It took months to perfect.

Q: Is there a message in your novel you want readers to grasp?
A: At its heart, Through the Veneer of Time celebrates love, honor, and resilience. It asks how far a man will go to save the woman he loves and what his wedding vow means when tested—to love in sickness as well as in health. The story explores how a couple can overcome physical and psychological obstacles together, complementing each other's strengths. Ultimately, it's a reminder that love has the power to conquer all.

BENEATH THE SHADOW OF TIME

Book 3, Always and Forever Trilogy

By Vera Bell

Excerpt

I straightened, forcing down the unbearable tremors that rippled through me like a quake. Ryan was working on an emergency. He’d call me soon, tired and apologetic. And alive. Sorry, love, I couldn’t use my phone where I was. Heading home now.

My brain wrapped in a thick, cold fog, I opened a search engine and typed, “Miami FBI headquarters phone number.” Then, struck by a sudden morbid idea, I ended the call before it went through, tapped on the news, and typed, “Miami FBI.”

The doorbell rang, and Guinness erupted in a deafening clamor of barking and snarling. An adrenaline-fueled rush of a wild, dying hope, mixed with the terror of foreknowledge, carried me to the door through the gunfire of no’s in my head.

Ryan would have used his key. Guinness wouldn’t have snarled. My vision blurred and dimmed as I opened the door to find Emma and Jason standing outside, their faces two pale, immobile masks.

In a sickening flash of memory, the skull grinned at me with its eternal frozen rictus of a corpse. And all around it—wake attendants draped in black, and me in my indecent widow’s gown, and black lace and feathers to mask my horror.

I backed away from Emma and Jason—back into the apartment where only moments ago, I still had hope. I kept moving backward until I came up against something hard.

Guinness—wistful brown eyes fixed on me—followed me in.

“No.” I pierced the flesh of my palms with my fingernails. “No.”

“Sie.” Emma approached very slowly, like I was a ticking bomb. Gently, she wrapped her arms around me. Pulled me close. “Let’s sit somewhere, sweetie. Let’s sit down.”

“No,” I said. “No.”

She walked me to the bedroom, away from the living room where Austin was watching his gaudy cartoons, the actors’ penetrating voices ringing throughout the apartment.

Ha, ha, ha! Let’s see what’s behind this door!

What if it’s a monster? I’m scared!

Look, it’s only—

Aah!

Emma sat beside me on the bed.

Jason stalled by the door. He was dressed in full fatigues, face covered in muck, hair dripping with sweat.

“Jay,” said Emma.

He stepped inside and scrubbed a sleeved forearm across his forehead, smearing the dirt.

I pressed a fist to my mouth. I abhorred the sight of Jason in our bedroom. I hated it more than anything in the world.

Into the Lure of Time

Always and Forever Book 2

In this gripping sequel to the award-winning novel, Through the Veneer of Time, echoes of Siena’s past life lure her into a shocking indiscretion that threatens to destroy her marriage. She alone can undo the damage, but this chilling revelation is only the beginning of her battle.

1564, ULSTER, IRELAND.

After Aedan’s diplomatic visit to Queen Elizabeth’s court results in his compulsory divorce and arranged marriage, Neave’s violent unraveling drives her into another man’s arms.

But in seeking revenge, Neave falls into a perfect trap set by Aedan’s enemy. By the time she learns the truth, it’s too late to undo the damage to Aedan, herself, and the hard-won peace in Ulster.

When despair makes her reckless, the price will be a lifetime of infamy, confinement, and isolation from what Neave treasures most—Aedan and her son.

2011, WASHINGTON D.C./DALLAS, TX.

It seems like a reasonable plan—Siena finishing her final mural in D.C. while Ryan starts his new job in Dallas. But when Siena meets Ryan’s new FBI partner, an inexplicable fit of jealousy sends her on a downward spiral. To make matters worse, the present mirrors the past when her visions take a startling turn. Consumed by insecurities, Siena takes a drastic step, which proves a catastrophic lapse in judgment. When her self-fulfilling prophecy unfolds in a devastating inversion of the past, Siena’s actions could cost her the two people she most fears to lose—Ryan and their baby.

Will Siena and Ryan beat their disastrous odds, or is their marriage foredoomed?

If you love time travel romance with dark undertones, as well as elements of domestic suspense, psychosexual thriller, reincarnation, and a touch of magic, don’t miss the second installment of the Always and Forever trilogy!

INTO THE LURE OF TIME

Book 2, Always and Forever Trilogy

By Vera Bell

Excerpt

Everything—the floor, the walls, the air—fell away. Only this parchment in my hand remained.

Chimeric. Foretold.

Somewhere deep down, I knew I stood very still, calm, and mute, my eyes fixed on Aedan’s precise English hand. But I also hovered above, crumbling into bleeding bits. Watching my life’s blood drain out of me and wash the world in crimson, drop by drop by drop—

Kian said something, his voice familiar, ordinary. It cannot be. I shifted my gaze to the broken seal. An English forgery to foment strife. A cruel trickery to break our spirit. But there was yet a paragraph unread—

As I shall be returning soon after you take delivery of this dispatch, I trust that as my loyal subject, you will abide my expressed demand in the proper and expeditious fashion commensurate with the sensitivity of this matter. As well, it is my uttermost wish that you will, hitherto, regard me solely as your rightful ruler, and as such, would not seek my audience in any unseemly or unsuitable manner. Furthermore, shall you find yourself in my presence, I rely on your good sense and proper decorum to act toward me with such deference and regard as befits my rank.

Earl II of Tyrone, Lord Aedan O’Neal

This 5th Day of January, 1565

The hall swayed. The parchment slipped from my fingers. His handwriting. His name. His signature. What forgery?

Kian steadied me with his hands on my shoulders, eyes frozen with horror.

He bent to take the parchment, pinching it between his thumb and index finger like it was something vile to touch. Like it would sully anyone mad enough to lay a hand on it.

“Is…is h-he…dead?”

The dais stood wrapped in saffron and gold, awaiting the O’Neal’s return.

I came back to myself. My eyes burned with salt. My throat chafed with sand. My heart burst into icy, piercing shards. How determined he was to go to London, how callous to slam our chamber door.

THROUGH THE VENEER OF TIME

Book 1, Always and Forever Trilogy By Vera Bell

Excerpt

His words were a blast that made something inside me snap. Why couldn’t I unlock my eyes from his? Unclench my knees despite an unbearable compulsion to run? I dug my fingernails into my sweaty palms to break the paralysis, drove the graphite shards into my flesh.

“Do you ever wonder what becomes of your characters?” His vacuous smile didn’t reach his eyes. “What comes after your painstaking freeze-frame? Your warrior—” He pointed his chin at the mural. “He’s cocky, but he doesn’t know what he’s riding into. Yet hours from now, he could be lying in some field, stripped of his weapons, bleeding out into the ground as the vultures peck at his baby blues.” His eyes widened. “Leaving his beautiful young widow all alone.”

His impossibly soft voice was a ringing blow in my ears. A tremor braced my throat. I drew a frantic breath against it.

“I’m sorry,” I squeezed out, “I’m not sure I follow.”

“I’m sure you do.” He chuckled. “But don’t look so stricken, Siena Forte. It’s only a painting, a fantasy. Nothing more.”

“Excuse me…” I edged past him, cold all over.

I rushed into the nearest restroom, tossed the broken graphite into the trash can, and locked myself in a stall. I hugged myself. Tight. Tighter. Gasped for air, not drawing any. My vision swam at the edges. Flickering. Fading. My heart thudded, and breath came faster in my chest, choking me.

Fragments of his words whirred around me, and I grasped my head to stop the awful cacophony. But it wouldn’t stop. The image he drew cut like a knife, piercing through something soft and vulnerable inside. Something I’d buried deep down and wished to keep that way. But he’d driven it to the surface and laid it out in the open, raw and exposed.
