Chapter 3

A country can’t be free unless the women are free.

—Abdullah Öcalan, imprisoned leader of the PKK, recognized as a terrorist  organization by the US, NATO, and the EU.

Mountains outside Siirt, Turkey

12:40 p.m. GMT−8, May 1, 2021

“He didn’t die in vain, Zara.”

Two dark-haired women stand high, overlooking a green valley, beyond which  there is another mountain, and another behind that. These are the northernmost  peaks of the Zagros Fold, a 1500-kilometer creation of the Arabic tectonic plate  smashing into the Eurasian plate twenty million years ago. They form a crown  around the lands known today as the Fertile Crescent, extending from southern  Turkey through northern Iraq, along the border with Iran and down to the Red  Sea.

But for these two women, the only importance of these mountains is the safe  haven they have provided for the people known as Kurds, who have found shelter  and safety in these alpines for thousands upon thousands of years. Who until two  years ago were the largest ethnic group in the world without a country.

The taller of the two women wears a grey outer gown over a full-length purple  dress, black belt, sandals, and headscarf, the latter decorated with colorful  embroidered flowers and carefully wrapped around her oval face, tucking away  her shoulder-length dark brown hair. On her wrist is a simple wind-up watch.  Her almond-shaped dark eyes are fixed on the horizon, where she still sees the  village.

“Didn’t he? Die in vain?” replies Zara. “I told my little boy brother not to join  the PKK. We needed him at home. He was the last man left in my family. And  now, there is only me, my mother, my grandmother, and thank Xwedê, still my  great-grandmother.”

Putting her hand around Zara to comfort her is Peri, who in contrast wears a  formfitting red cotton top covered by a loose beige sweater, black cotton capri  pants, and tan sandals with sequins matching the ones on her sweater. Her

shoulder-length dark brown hair is pulled into a ponytail, with two stylish twists  on each side of her face. And on her wrist, at the adamant request of her friend,  nothing. No MoxWorld devices at all.

“He died while trying to get the women and children of that village, the one  you imagine seeing on the horizon, up into the mountains as government troops  searched for the PKK,” Peri states calmly. “He died a hero.”

“And what good are heroes?” Zara laments. “Especially when they are dead.” Zara walks along the mountainside through the lush green vegetation of  spring. Patches of red, purple, blue, and yellow flowers litter the landscape. She  bends over to pick a number of red ones.

“My mother lined his room with poppies of this color after his death. The  color of the blood shed by the men of our family.”

Following her best friend as she walks, as she always has, Peri asks, “Then  why did you insist we meet here, if his memory brings back such pain?” “Because you want me to help the Anatolian Kurdish separatists. There is a  price one pays. My little boy brother did,” the taller woman replies, her long  earlobes peeking out from her headscarf in the gust of wind. “I don’t agree with  separatism. I believe we should work out a peaceful solution. One that would  better the lives of Kurdish women. Equality for all as we saw in Rojava. Women  and men governed together as equals. I want you to think about the  consequences of what you ask of me now.”

“They only want your advice. You do not have to take up arms.” “They want my connection to him,” Zara replies, pulling her silk scarf closer  around her oval face. She throws her poppies with the wind gust, which sends  them flying a hundred meters as if they were little balloons.

Silence as they walk by a more crimson-red set of poppies. Peri bends down  and picks some and hands them to Zara.

“I do not like that shade of red,” Zara says as she drops the crimson reminders  of “him” and crushes them under her sandal.

“Why do I follow you, Zara?” asks the disturbed Peri. “You are so complicated.  Poppies are poppies.”

High Couch of Silistra the Silistra Quartet Book 1 By Janet Morris Book Tour! @SilverDaggerBookTours #HighCouchOfSilistra #SilistraQuartet @PerseidPublishing @perseid_press

Dystopian.
Biology shapes reality...

One woman's mythic search for self-realization in a distant tomorrow...
Her sensuality was at the core of her world, her quest beyond the civilized stars.

Aristocrat. Outcast. Picara. Slave. Ruler.

High Couch of Silistra

The Silistra Quartet Book 1

By Janet Morris

Genre: Epic Dystopian SciFi Fantasy

"Engrossing characters in a marvelous adventure." - Charles N. Brown, Locus Magazine

"The amazing and erotic adventures of the most beautiful courtesan in tomorrow's universe" - Frederik Pohl

I was high-couch in the greatest house of pleasure in the civilized stars.

“We are all bound,” is the great truth of Silistra: Bound by biological necessity and genetics, the men and women of Silistra struggle to sort Nature from Nurture – where Nature always wins. Welcome to Silistra, a glimpse of a far distant future wherein a civilization proclaims the greatest feat an individual can perform is to produce one child, yet distrusts the sciences that brought them to verge of extinction.

Here women and men coexist uneasily in a society ravaged by war, technology, and infertility, each vying for power, each seeking dominion over one another. Be warned, if your tastes run to simplistic plots, throbbing organs, swooning damsels or kick-boxing women in men’s armor, Silistra may be too challenging. Feminists, misogynists, misanthropes, or fans of political diatribe, this is not the book for you.

High Couch of Silistra, first of the notorious Silistra Quartet, brings us to a realm where thought alters probability, where creativity is inextricably linked to the urge to own and dominate, and where the universe itself is amenable to a focused mind.

Rooted deeply in humanity’s mythic past yet unaware of the planet Earth, High Couch of Silistra begins one woman’s mythic quest for self-knowledge – with surprising results.

Best selling author Janet Morris began writing in 1976 and published more than 30 novels, many co-authored with her husband Chris Morris or others. She contributed short fiction to the shared universe fantasy series Thieves World, in which she created the Sacred Band of Stepsons, a mythical unit of ancient fighters modeled on the Sacred Band of Thebes.

She created, orchestrated, and edited the Bangsian fantasy series Heroes in Hell, writing stories for the series as well as co-writing the related novel, The Little Helliad, with Chris Morris. She wrote the bestselling Silistra Quartet in the 1970s, including High Couch of Silistra, The Golden Sword, Wind from the Abyss, and The Carnelian Throne.

This quartet had more than four million copies in Bantam print alone, and was translated into German, French, Italian, Russian and other languages. In the 1980s, Baen Books released a second edition of this landmark series. The third edition is the Author's Cut edition, newly revised by the author for Perseid Press. Most of her fiction work has been in the fantasy and science fiction genres, although she has also written historical and other novels.

Morris has written, contributed to, or edited several book-length works of non-fiction, as well as papers and articles on nonlethal weapons, developmental military technology and other defense and national security topics.

Janet said: 'People often ask what book to read first. I recommend "I, the Sun" if you like ancient history; "The Sacred Band," a novel, if you like heroic fantasy; "Lawyers in Hell" if you like historical fantasy set in hell; "Outpassage" if you like hard science fiction; "High Couch of Silistra" if you like far-future dystopian or philosophical novels. I am most enthusiastic about the definitive Perseid Press Author's Cut editions, which I revised and expanded.'

Excerpt

Copyright 2025, Louise Lennox

As we walk, I feel Jabari’s presence before I see him, his shadow a faint whisper behind Ann’s confident steps. When I steal a glance over my shoulder, there he is—hands clasped tightly behind his broad back, his expression unreadable but his posture screaming control.

He’s a silent guardian, watchful and unrelenting. I whip my head back around, pretending not to notice him, but the heat of his gaze burns into the small of my back like a brand. It’s steady and searing; I feel it no matter how much I try to shake it off. I bite my lip, fighting the overwhelming urge to glance again, refusing to give him the satisfaction of knowing how much his stare rattles me.

Instead, I focus on the uneven trail, willing myself to stay composed, but fate has other plans. My foot catches on a big, stubborn, and perfectly placed root to send me sprawling. Time slows as I lurch forward, bracing for the harsh sting of dirt and gravel against my skin. But it never comes. Instead, strong arms yank me back, wrapping around me like a vice and holding me steady before the ground can claim me.

His touch impacts me like a lightning strike, sending electricity coursing through me as I gasp at the warmth of his body pressed against mine. His chest is solid, his grip firm, and for a moment, I lean into him, caught between the safety of his embrace and the unmistakable charge sparking in the air between us. “Careful, Siren,” Jabari murmurs, his voice low and rough against my ear.

The way he says it sends shivers down my spine, his tone full of something I can’t quite name but feel everywhere. “We can’t have you hurting yourself.” Before I can process the warmth of his breath against my skin and the solidity of his presence behind me, he sets me upright and steps back. His hands fall away as quickly as they came, leaving me cold and off balance in more ways than one.

I catch my breath, my heart racing for reasons that have nothing to do with the near fall and everything to do with the man standing behind me. “My name is Sierra,” I mutter as I move past him. Ann continues, blissfully unaware of the hot mess unfolding behind her. When she suddenly stops, she turns and smirks at her son but doesn’t say a word.

Instead, she gestures to a green clearing encircled by towering, venerable oaks. “And here is where we host our annual jazz festival,” she says. “Every first week of July, music becomes the heartbeat of Chesapeake Heights.” “Sounds amazing,” I reply, my voice faltering just a little, caught in the pull of Jabari’s eyes. He might as well be wrapped in caution tape, the way he stands so still, so controlled.

His fitted tee clings to his muscular frame like a second skin, and every inch of him exudes power and restraint. I want him to unravel. "Sierra, are you alright?" Ann’s concerned voice breaks through my reverie. "Absolutely," I lie, offering a brittle smile. The truth is, Jabari makes me nervous, not because of his brooding demeanor, but because there’s something in his guarded gaze that threatens to scale the walls I’ve built around my heart with ease.

Rooftop Follies

“Every year I post a letter,” Sabina offered Roland. “I can be declared dead after ten years of silence so I post a letter every year to prove that I am alive. That way my stepfather cannot take control of my father’s affairs, which includes my inheritance.”

“I can help you, Sabina,” Roland said quietly.

“You have my gratitude, but this is my responsibility. I have borne it for ten years, there are only a few months left before I am twenty-five. Then I will contact my lawyers and finish this.”

They finished their coffee just as the tavern became louder and drunker.

“Time to go,” Roland said, pushing back.

Neither of them rushed to seek a cab, enjoying the brisk walk through an oddly snowless December night. Abruptly, Sabina stopped, her head cocked.

“Oh, listen to that,” Sabina said.

“Don’t tell me you’re interested in some second-rate musician presenting a third-rate opera?” Roland asked.

“It’s not a third-rate opera, it’s your opera,” Sabina smiled. “Rinaldo.” Roland groaned.

“God save me from French epics. A few minutes and then we must be off. I think I smell snow in the air. Mustn’t get caught in bad weather,” Roland warned.

“Music is never a waste of time,” Sabina said. “And you actually smell horse droppings but I’ll allow you your delusions.” They moved closer to the soulful violin just as a surprisingly good soprano launched into, “Lascia ch’io pianga.”

“That violinist is quite good,” Sabina whispered to Roland. “The soprano is drowning him out. If only they had a whole symphony. Once I heard the Chevalier De St. George conduct in Paris and I was never the same. Come with me,” Sabina said abruptly and grabbed Roland’s hand.

Roland let himself be led through some foul alleys and up some slippery steps, then through a building. Then, they exited a door onto a roof. She could pick up the thread of the music again, clear and sweet. Roland followed his lady to the edge of the roof and watched her take in the song as the notes floated upward into the fetid night air.

“Why up here?” Roland asked her.

“The music rises and up here, you can feel like you’re alone above the clouds, carried away by waves of heaven.” Sabina tilted her head to the notes.

“Have you been to the theater since you’ve been in town?” he asked.

“Oh, no, the duke is not a music lover, so we do not attend, which is a shame. A good orchestra raging into a symphony is my weakness,” Sabina said. The music made her foolish

Sabina could not understand the words but she felt the music. It did things to her, made her feel things that were unwise.

But it was after dark in London and no one could tell her what to do. Sabina turned and looked up at Roland’s face. He was not a handsome man but he had always been so attractive to her, from that stubborn jaw to the thoughtful eyes that looked at her searchingly.

“Would you be terribly affronted if I kissed you?” she asked.

“You didn’t ask the time before.” He grinned, reaching for her.

“Are you going to make me apologize?” Sabina responded, enjoying his hands on her. She loved his hands. He could repair her windows, handle a gun, guide a horse, hold her steady.

“No, I beg you to do it again.”

“I’m not very good at it,” Sabina warned, placing her hands on his chest.

“Well, then I think you should get some practice.” Roland bent his head down to her lips. “I humbly offer myself as a test subject.”

Sabina went up on her toes to meet his lips and smiled as they kissed. This was so right, possibly the only thing in her life that was good and hers. She opened her lips and touched her tongue to his lips, letting herself into his mouth with a delight that bordered on joy.

She heard his breathing and remembered to breathe herself as she explored the ways they could kiss. Her arms found their way around his neck and he had backed her to a stone block that she had not seen before on the roof.

It wasn’t enough. Sabina couldn’t help the frustrated noise that came from her and she slid a hand down to cup the erection bulging the front of his breeches.

“Lord, Sabina, have mercy, woman.” Roland broke away from her to gasp.

“I need you,” she breathed heavily. “I need this.”

“I’m not going to take you on a bloody roof,” Roland said, then pulled her in for another drugging kiss.

“Then I’ll take you.”

Seven hundred miles of river is between them, but the historic battleship is pushing upstream to help. The battles along the Ohio River come to a conclusion in an epic battle on Wheeling Island!

The Official Release date of this book was June 6, 2024, the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. Chris Underwood was on the actual LST-325, docked on the Ohio River, signing books for this official opening date. He has volunteered on this historical ship and proud to include it in this book.

CHRIS UNDERWOOD lives in central Ohio with his wonderful wife and three children who are one by one being pushed out the door for college. His passions have included woodworking and the completion of a 10-year historical home restoration, in addition to his Computer Consulting career. More recently his passions for sailing and writing have been given more attention in his life.

Chris openly pines for the day that writing and sailing completely consumes it. Creative Writing was always an interest, even decades ago when in college at Ohio State. Business Writing courses were pushed to the side in favor of Short Story and Sci-Fi. In the end, a Computer Science and Accounting degree seemed more promising in today's world and writing was put on the back burner.

Until a few years ago. A subject matter and storyline were generated that created enough passion to put pen to paper. Now writing is a daily event, with two more stories in process!
