Where The Light is Hottest is a book about an actor, but it is also so much more. We follow Natasha from small town Scotland to big time Hollywood (but she stays based in the UK). The below extract is when she has been auditioning for years. When you first start out you dont get good auditions. Not usually, anyway. Here she is auditioning with a Hollywood superstar. She has made it. Yet she is still striving and making her way up the slippery ladder. I did a lot of auditions when I was an actor and they are nerve-wracking. It is a tough industry but the highs are like nothing else. I worked in the film industry as an actor, producer, casting director and director for years so I know my stuff. Where The Light is Hottest is very true to life. I hope you enjoy it.

Chapter 17

Then

There is a sea of actresses and there is only one role. The exhaustion of the competition wears at me. Who knew there were so many blond actresses, I think ruefully. We are more common than mud.

Natasha, so glad to see you again.

I stand up. Its Derek. He came to our end-of-year show and has supported my career ever since.

So glad to see you, Derek. Thank you for bringing me in.

Follow me.

I follow Derek into a room and I am shocked to see that Ben Hart is there. He is the biggest action hero in the world and has been on top of his game for decades. Despite myself and all of my training I am star struck. The words will not come out of my mouth. I make a weird, strangled noise.

Derek looks at me like I am an alien but Ben is not fazed. He gives me a killer-watt smile of perfect white tombstone teeth. It blows me over again. I finally switch my brain back to human and I take his outstretched hand.

Its lovely to meet you, Mr Hart.

Call me Ben.

Ben.

Okay, lets run through the scene. Im sorry, we couldnt give you the script in advance, Natasha, these things are top secret.

No worries, and I signed the confidentiality agreement in reception.

Great! Lets do this.

Derek hands me the script and gestures to the sofa. We both sit down.

And action!

Lucy, I want you to come with me. It is not safe for you here. I need to protect you.

I do not need your protection, Sam.

But you need love.

Youre right, I do need love.

Then he kisses me, deeply and with passion. I go with it, even though it feels wrong. William and I are doing well. I think we are in a relationship but we have not had the talkyet. I get that I have to kiss people on film sets but here, in an ordinary, banal office it feels like cheating.

And cut, says Ben. He makes a whoah sound and looks at Derek who looks back at him and gives him a double thumbs up. They look like two frat boys. I have an uneasy feeling in my tummy. Why am I such a prude? I wish I was more carefree, that I could just go with the flow. Everyone else seems so free.

You know, you and I, I think we have real chemistry.

Should we go one more time? Get it on video?Derek looks at us both and then leaves his gaze on me for a fraction too long. He is seeking permission. I can only give it.

Sounds great!I hear myself say.

Brilliant, lets do this.Ben Hart is all energy. He could power the national grid for decades with his enthusiasm and gung-ho attitude. I briefly wonder if he is on drugs.

We do the scene again; the kiss is just as deep with a hint of tongue. His hands decide to go on their own journey. I try to sell this as much as possible but I cannot help but think I am pimping myself out. Derek yells cut.

Ben Hart jumps up like he could make it all the way to the moon. We are done now. I stand up. Ben shakes both of my hands vigorously and so does Derek. I start to say goodbye to Ben and thank him for the opportunity but I can tell he has already moved on. He is huddled over the laptop with Derek. I move my head slightly and I can see they are looking at the head shot of the next actress. I leave, saying a quiet goodbyeas I do.

I walk out of Spotlight into Leicester Square. Its buzzing with tourists. I can see that they are setting up for a film premiere. This square is famous. A tiny patch of London that has had the feet of all of Hollywood walk on it. Fans are already lining up to see their film gods. They have phones, pictures and notepads. Autograph hunters and film aficionado. Ben Hart must have walked this square hundreds of times.

I start to wonder if I will ever join them, and as I do, I also wonder if I even want to.

Sharky and the Jewel The Deliverers Book 1 by Gregory S. Slomba Book Tour!

Tales of adventure, friendship, self-confidence and teamwork for all ages.

Sharky and the Jewel

The Deliverers Book 1

by Gregory S. Slomba

Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy Adventure

WINNER of the Golden Wizard Children's Book Award 2024!
NOMINATED for The Book of the Year Award 2024 in the Ages 8+ Category.

A world is in trouble, who can save it?

Certainly not Eric Scott, a 12 year old boy coming to grips with his own personal tragedy. But that’s exactly what Stig, an owl from another world, asks him to do. Together, they are sent to deliver Calendria, a small fishing village, from Sharky, an immortal pirate captain that has enslaved them. But defeating Sharky and his band of bloodthirsty pirates will be no easy task.

When they arrive, Eric and Stig meet Kate Endria, who is convinced that they are the Deliverers—heroes of an ancient prophecy who are destined to defeat Sharky and his crew. Eric devises a plan that he hopes will work. Eric’s confidence rises when they rescue Hallo Tosis, an outcast dwarf who gives them the key to a powerful weapon. But it’s only after things start to go horribly wrong that Eric and Stig discover the true object of their mission.

THE GOLDEN WIZARD BOOK PRIZE REVIEW 2024:

This book is truly a masterpiece, showcasing the author's incredible talent on every single page. Slomba’s writing style…blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality, immersing readers completely in the story.

The protagonist, Eric, is exceptionally well-crafted. As the plot unfolds, we witness his remarkable journey of self-discovery, gradually uncovering his inner strength and determination. This evolution of the character adds depth and relatability to the narrative, allowing readers to form a personal connection…and reminding us of our own untapped potential.

What else sets this astounding literary piece apart is its ability to resonate with a wide range of readers. It surpasses age boundaries, entrancing not only younger readers but also adults who will find themselves completely absorbed in its pages. The allure of this book is undeniable, and personally, I found it to be an absolute delight to read. I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the series, excited to continue the journey.

Order of the Crystal Lion

The Deliverers Book 2

"The Deliverers: Order of the Crystal Lion proved to be even better than the first book in the series (which I loved) and left me wanting the next book right away! The story was full of surprises and is an adventure you don't want to miss!"~Stephanie Robinson, co-author of The Secret DMS Files of Fairday Morrow

"The writing in this book is so descriptive...Every page is a fabulous adventure filled with action. Just when you think the conflict is over and you can finally breathe a sigh of relief - wham! - a new unexpected twist appears."~Karen Pokras Toz, author of the award-winning Nate Rocks series.

The Golden Dragon of Ang

The Deliverers Book 3

“From the mouth thou shalt hear
The wisdom of far off lands.
The way to truth is clear
Head, then heart, then hands.
Lastly, tail will point the way
To the world’s end.
Then gold shall have its say
And foretell the doom of men.”

With his dying breath, so spoke the last Dragon’s Voice. Now, with no successor to impart the wisdom of the mythical Golden Dragon of Ang and children between the ages of 12 and 15 mysteriously disappearing, the Dragon Islands have been turned upside down. It is up to the Deliverers—Eric Scott, Stig the owl, Kate Endria and Hallo Tosis the dwarf—to unravel the clues they hope will lead to the missing children and the new Dragon’s Voice. Meanwhile, the Fang, leader of the renegade Denchi Assassins, has harnessed the unearthly powers of the sparkling mist and is attempting to tip the balance of power in the Islands, and perhaps shred the very fabric of the universe itself. Will the new Dragon’s Voice be revealed, or has the Golden Dragon of Ang abandoned the Islands to the Fang and the sparkling mist?

Sparkling Mist of Time

The Deliverers Book 4

You can’t change the past—can you?

That’s what Eric Scott always thought. But that was back before he learned about the Hallway of Worlds and the sparkling mist. Now, after three Assignments to save other worlds, he’s not so sure. When the Gatekeeper tells him someone might be using the mist—matter from failed worlds—to change the past on Eric’s world, possibility becomes probability.

In their fourth and final Assignment, the Deliverers—Eric Scott, Stig the owl, Kate Endria, and Hallo Tosis the dwarf—face a challenge like no other. They must prevent the worlds they have helped on their previous Assignments from being wiped out. They are sent back in time to the American Revolution to stop an unknown foe from using the sparkling mist to change history. Worlds, the Hallway and the universe as we know it, hang in the balance. Will the Deliverers be able to contain the sparkling mist once and for all, or will everything they have achieved so far be annihilated?

CHAPTER 12--BATTLE

Eric and his friends crouched behind an impromptu wall of wagons, stone

and any other debris

that could be found. Nan, her archers,

and some other villagers were deployed along it and in the buildings nearest

the

harbor.

The roar of cannon erupted from across the bay. They watched as the first pirate

ship

entered the harbor. Sweat stood out on Eric’s forehead, and his heart hammered.

What

were they doing? What was he doing here? They didn’t stand a chance, it

was

obvious.

Even if the

catapults managed to do some damage, and if the archers were able to land some

lucky arrows,

they couldn’t take on a fleet of five

ships and expect to win—not without the chain in the harbor or the net or

some cannon.

“I blew it, Stig,” Eric muttered.

“What?” the owl asked.

“I messed up. It was stupid to think that I could come up with a plan to beat

Sharky.”

Stig ruffled his feathers. “We’re not beaten yet.”

“No, but we will be soon, and it’s my fault.”

“You can’t blame yourself my boy. They knew what they were getting into,” Stig said.

“Stig’s right,” Kate broke in. “It’s not your fault. Besides, I think we’ve still got a

chance.”

Eric shook his head and sighed. The ship was closer now. “Is that Sharky’s ship?”

he asked.

The Lord Mayor nodded. “That’s the Deathwind. It’s flying his flag.” He pointed to

a blood-red flag that fluttered from the main mast in the early morning light.

The Lord Mayor frowned. “What I don’t understand is what he’s doing in the

harbor

alone. I can’t make out

what’s happening at the entrance. Stig, could you fly up and see how things look

from the air?”

“Certainly, be back in a jiffy,” Stig said, and took off, flying out over the bay.

Eric watched him go, and hoped he’d be okay.

“Where are Wainscott and Weatherbee?” the Lord Mayor asked.

“They an’ some fishermen got some casks of powder from ol’ Bubblebeak so’s

they could set ’em adrift out in the harbor,” Hallo said.

“For the last time, Hallo, her name is Bottleneck,” Kate said.

The dwarf shrugged. “Whatever,” he said.

“Where’ll they be launching the boats from?” Eric asked.

“There’s a little grotto over there,” Kate said, pointing to where the wharf

ended on their right. “It’s screened

off from the rest of the bay by some rocks.

There’s smarw

a small opening, but from the harbor it looks like a wall of stone. Captain Weatherbee

keeps a sloop tied up there, and some of the fishermen dock their smaller craft and row-boats there.”

Just then, there was another round of cannon fire, and Stig re-turned with a flutter of wings.

Eric felt a surge of relief when he saw his friend return unharmed.

“What do you have to report, Stig?” the Lord Mayor asked.

“Well, it could be worse,” the owl said. “It seems that the catapults did a significant amount

of damage to one of the ships. It appears to be sinking. This has effectively cut off the lead

ship from the others—at least until the foundering vessel sinks.

“The other three ships have picked up survivors and have begun to bombard the ridges. It doesn’t

look good for our friends up there, I’m afraid. They are drawing heavy fire.”

Eric’s mind was racing. A wild hope rose within him. “Sharky’s cut off!”

“Aye, but only for a while, lad,” the Lord Mayor reminded him.

“Well, let’s take advantage of it while we’ve got the chance!” Cordon bellowed.

The Lord Mayor nodded. “Go tell Weatherbee and Wainscott to launch those boats into the bay.”

Cordon grinned and rose to race off.

“No need!” cut in Stig, and pointed a wing towards the harbor. Eric peered

above the wall and saw

three small boats

drifting toward the pirate ship. He also saw that the ship was starting to turn.

“Hey, she’s coming about!”

They all watched as the ship’s bow began to swing to the right so that its guns

could fire a

broadside at the village. No one on board the Deathwind seemed to have noticed

the small

boats in the water. The ship’s bow was turning toward the floating bombs.

Eric held his breath. Would they get lucky? Suddenly, one of the boats exploded in

a ball of orange and yellow flame.

Rooftop Follies

“Every year I post a letter,” Sabina offered Roland. “I can be declared dead after ten years of silence so I post a letter every year to prove that I am alive. That way my stepfather cannot take control of my father’s affairs, which includes my inheritance.”

“I can help you, Sabina,” Roland said quietly.

“You have my gratitude, but this is my responsibility. I have borne it for ten years, there are only a few months left before I am twenty-five. Then I will contact my lawyers and finish this.”

They finished their coffee just as the tavern became louder and drunker.

“Time to go,” Roland said, pushing back.

Neither of them rushed to seek a cab, enjoying the brisk walk through an oddly snowless December night. Abruptly, Sabina stopped, her head cocked.

“Oh, listen to that,” Sabina said.

“Don’t tell me you’re interested in some second-rate musician presenting a third-rate opera?” Roland asked.

“It’s not a third-rate opera, it’s your opera,” Sabina smiled. “Rinaldo.” Roland groaned.

“God save me from French epics. A few minutes and then we must be off. I think I smell snow in the air. Mustn’t get caught in bad weather,” Roland warned.

“Music is never a waste of time,” Sabina said. “And you actually smell horse droppings but I’ll allow you your delusions.” They moved closer to the soulful violin just as a surprisingly good soprano launched into, “Lascia ch’io pianga.”

“That violinist is quite good,” Sabina whispered to Roland. “The soprano is drowning him out. If only they had a whole symphony. Once I heard the Chevalier De St. George conduct in Paris and I was never the same. Come with me,” Sabina said abruptly and grabbed Roland’s hand.

Roland let himself be led through some foul alleys and up some slippery steps, then through a building. Then, they exited a door onto a roof. She could pick up the thread of the music again, clear and sweet. Roland followed his lady to the edge of the roof and watched her take in the song as the notes floated upward into the fetid night air.

“Why up here?” Roland asked her.

“The music rises and up here, you can feel like you’re alone above the clouds, carried away by waves of heaven.” Sabina tilted her head to the notes.

“Have you been to the theater since you’ve been in town?” he asked.

“Oh, no, the duke is not a music lover, so we do not attend, which is a shame. A good orchestra raging into a symphony is my weakness,” Sabina said. The music made her foolish

Sabina could not understand the words but she felt the music. It did things to her, made her feel things that were unwise.

But it was after dark in London and no one could tell her what to do. Sabina turned and looked up at Roland’s face. He was not a handsome man but he had always been so attractive to her, from that stubborn jaw to the thoughtful eyes that looked at her searchingly.

“Would you be terribly affronted if I kissed you?” she asked.

“You didn’t ask the time before.” He grinned, reaching for her.

“Are you going to make me apologize?” Sabina responded, enjoying his hands on her. She loved his hands. He could repair her windows, handle a gun, guide a horse, hold her steady.

“No, I beg you to do it again.”

“I’m not very good at it,” Sabina warned, placing her hands on his chest.

“Well, then I think you should get some practice.” Roland bent his head down to her lips. “I humbly offer myself as a test subject.”

Sabina went up on her toes to meet his lips and smiled as they kissed. This was so right, possibly the only thing in her life that was good and hers. She opened her lips and touched her tongue to his lips, letting herself into his mouth with a delight that bordered on joy.

She heard his breathing and remembered to breathe herself as she explored the ways they could kiss. Her arms found their way around his neck and he had backed her to a stone block that she had not seen before on the roof.

It wasn’t enough. Sabina couldn’t help the frustrated noise that came from her and she slid a hand down to cup the erection bulging the front of his breeches.

“Lord, Sabina, have mercy, woman.” Roland broke away from her to gasp.

“I need you,” she breathed heavily. “I need this.”

“I’m not going to take you on a bloody roof,” Roland said, then pulled her in for another drugging kiss.

“Then I’ll take you.”
