Loving a Wild Stranger (A Historical Romance) By Kelli A. Wilkins!

Behind the Scenes: Loving a Wild Stranger (A Historical Romance)

By Kelli A. Wilkins

This “Behind the Scenes” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. In each blog, I’ll talk about why I wrote the book, share my thoughts on the plot and/or characters, and reveal what I loved most (or least) about writing the book.

Warning: Blogs may contain spoilers.

Hi everyone,

Loving a Wild Stranger is one of my favorite romance novels… it’s also the first romance novel I ever wrote. A long time ago when I was taking writing classes, I told my instructor an idea for a story had popped into my head, but I didn’t know what to do with it. I was writing short horror fiction at the time, and the idea wasn’t a horror story.

The premise seemed simple: a young woman runs away from home and impersonates a stranger’s mail order bride. My writing teacher said, “That’s a romance. Write it and see what happens.”

So I wrote the book… and discovered I liked writing romances (and I was pretty good at it). From there, other romance ideas came to me, and I wrote those books, too. That’s how my romance-writing career began. All from one idea.

One of the things that inspired me to write Loving a Wild Stranger was the interaction between the characters, Luther and Michelle. They come from very different backgrounds and at first don’t get along at all. Michelle is an independent, outspoken young woman used to getting her way in the “civilized” world, and Luther is a lonely “mountain man” looking for love.

As you can imagine, they clash over the course of the story and have several major blowups. When Michelle agrees to the “marriage” arrangement for a month, it raises a lot of questions: Does she truly care for Luther? Can she live in the wilderness? Will she stay after the month is over? How long can she keep up her charade?

Deception and trust are two main themes in the book. Michelle is lying to Luther about her past, her true identity, why she’s on the run… and Luther is keeping his own secrets from Michelle. When these bombshells are revealed, it nearly tears them apart. Can they ever trust each other completely?

When I wrote the book, I did a lot of research on the setting and what life was like back then (how people lived, what they ate, how they dressed) to contrast Michelle’s “city” way of life with Luther’s rugged existence. I also researched trappers, fur traders, and Native American culture of the time and region to build authentic details into Luther’s lifestyle. I wanted to pull readers into Luther’s world, so they could experience the story and events as Michelle sees them.

And I’m proud to say that I succeeded! One reviewer had this to say:

This book has the potential to be made into a movie. It took over my life. I ignored everyone and everything. Nothing was going to interrupt my time with Luther. Sigh…Luther, what a dreamy hero. I envied the heroine, Michelle. Loving a Wild Stranger reminded me of the 1970s T.V. show, Grizzly Adams – one of my favorite childhood television shows.

I recommend this book and will be keeping it on my keeper shelf. I was thoroughly entertained throughout the story. I would love to switch places with Michele and spend the rest of my days with Luther if I could. I would recommend reading Loving a Wild Stranger while relaxing by a lake!"

The “Grizzly Adams” feel was exactly what I was going for!

I love Luther and Michelle. They’re my “first couple” and no matter how many romances I write, their love story will always have a special place in my heart.

I hope you’ll fall in love with them and their story as much as I did. Loving a Wild Stranger is a fun blend of love and adventure in the wilderness.

Here’s the summary:

Loving a Wild Stranger

A woman running from her past… straight into the arms of an untamed man

In a moment of desperation, Kathleen Stanton flees her pampered life in Kingston, New York and ends up stranded in a small town in the Michigan Territory. Out of money and forced to rely on her instincts, she impersonates a handsome stranger’s mail-order bride.

Committed to her deception, Kathleen calls herself Michelle and starts her new life with Luther in an isolated cabin in the wilderness. Luther can’t believe his luck when his beautiful bride arrives, but something doesn’t feel right about his new wife. Michelle has terrifying nightmares involving a man named Roger and is reluctant to talk about where she came from.

Luther’s friend, Redfeather visits and tries to convince Luther to send Michelle back east. Distrusting Michelle, he warns Luther that his bride is not what she seems. But Luther is in love with Michelle, and he is harboring a secret of his own—one that might force Michelle to reject him when she learns the truth.

Michelle falls in love with Luther and adapts to her new way of life. Together, they face off against brutal townspeople and overcome harsh living conditions. When they finally give in to their desires and agree to become a proper man and wife, a dark figure from Michelle’s past resurfaces and threatens to destroy everything.

Love? I don’t do that anymore. I’ve had my fill of betrayal, of trusting the wrong people, of letting my guard down only to be burned. My life is about control now—running the Freeman family empire, upholding our legacy, and keeping my heart locked behind walls no one can break.

Then she shows up.

Sierra Watson is nothing like the women I’ve known—bold, beautiful, and completely unimpressed by me. She challenges me, meets my sharp edges with smooth confidence, and refuses to be anything less than herself. I should stay away. I need to stay away. But when she looks at me, I feel something shift, something crack open that I thought was long dead.

But love has cost me before, and I can’t afford to lose again.

Sierra

I don’t have time for love. Not when my family is depending on me. Not when my sister’s reckless decisions have forced me into a second job I never wanted, working for the powerful Freeman family to clean up a mess I didn’t make.

Then I meet him.

Jabari Freeman is infuriating—cold, controlled, and way too arrogant for his own good. He pushes, I push back. But the more I fight it, the harder it becomes to ignore the fire between us. And when that fire ignites, it’s impossible to put out.

But love has never come without sacrifice for me. And just when I think I might finally have something for myself, the life I’ve been trying to escape comes crashing back in.

Jabari has his own demons to fight, and I have mine. The question is… are we strong enough to fight for each other?

🔥 Enemies-to-lovers tension 🔥 Irresistible chemistry 🔥 Steamy Small Town Romance 🔥 A love worth risking everything for

Set against the lush backdrop of Southern Maryland’s Chesapeake Heights, Free to Fall is a soulful story of resilience, redemption, featuring the Freeman family. This is Book One: Jabari's Story.

Her skin is soft, her touch electric. “Thank you for being here tonight,” I say, meaning every word. “You’ve made me feel like the luckiest man in this room.”

“Jabari, you’re laying it on a little thick,” she says, though her eyes sparkle. She likes it—she can’t hide that, and honestly, I don’t want her to.

“Maybe. But you’re worth it,” I tease, my voice dropping lower.

Her laugh is soft, almost shy, and I swear it’s the sweetest sound I’ve heard all week. She drops her menu and lets out a frustrated sigh. “Ok, I give up; how do we order off this menu? There are too many small sections.”

I chuckle and lift my menu between us, my eyes meeting hers over the edge. “This is how it works,” I say, letting my voice drop to that rumble I know gets to her. “It’s a tasting menu. We pick a bunch of things to share.”

“Share?” She raises an eyebrow, a flicker of surprise flashing in her eyes. “You and-We’re going to share food?”

“Absolutely,” I say, grinning. “Tonight, I’m going to feed you.” The words roll off my tongue smooth as silk, and I don’t miss how her breath catches.

“I may love to eat, Jabari,” she says, leaning in just enough for her voice to wrap around me, “But I’m a picky eater. And this is a lot.”

“Trust me, you’ll savor every bite.” I know she’s thinking about the cost—practical to a fault—but that’s not her problem tonight. She’s with me, and when you’re with me, you don’t worry about a damn thing.

The waiter returns, and I rattle off our order: coco bread, cornbread, lamb, shrimp with a kick, lobster, and a plate of jollof rice and chicken. It's comfort food—my food.

“Jabari, are you sure—” she starts, but I cut her off with a wink.

“Relax. I’ve got this.”

Dinner becomes its own kind of game. The air shifts, the tension turning warm and playful as she laughs at my jokes and throws back quick comebacks. I insist on feeding her—a piece of lamb here, a forkful of rice there. She fights it at first, her independence flashing in those eyes, but eventually, she softens.

Every time my fingers brush her lips, her body relaxes more. Every flick of her tongue, every quiet sigh, tightens something deep inside me. And if my pants get any tighter, my dick is going to bust through.

“Stop it,” she says, but her voice is weak, her protest half-hearted, when I lick a dollop of butter that fell to her fingers,

“Can’t.” My voice is rougher now because this woman is doing things to me I can’t ignore.

“Jabari…” Her tone shifts, and there’s no mistaking the heat simmering in her words.

“Sierra.” I hold her gaze, daring her to admit what’s building between us. She doesn’t, but she doesn’t have to. It’s all there, written in how her lips part and body lean just a little closer to mine.

The moment is interrupted when the waiter drops the check on the table, but Sierra moves fast, her hand darting out like lightning to grab it.

“Sierra,” I warn, my voice steady but low. “Don’t even think about it.”

“It’s just a check, Jabari,” she says, feigning innocence, but the spark in her eyes gives her away.

“Touch it, and I’ll take you over my knee right here,” I say, my voice dropping to a growl. “Spank you until you’re a real redbone.”

She gasps, her cheeks flushing that perfect shade of pink. “You wouldn’t dare.”

“Try me,” I shoot back, my jaw tightening as I dare her to test me.

Her hand retreats, and she pouts, crossing her arms with a defiance that only makes me want her more.

“Good girl,” I say, my voice softer but no less firm. It’s not a dig—it’s appreciation. This woman is fire, and I want to get burned.

I stand, holding out my hand. For a moment, she hesitates, but then her fingers slide against mine, and it feels like victory.

“Come on, Siren,” I say, my voice coaxing. “Let’s return to Chesapeake Heights and walk by the water.”

“Jabari, I live here in the city; that’s almost an hour away. Are you going to want to bring me back home?”

“No, but I will,’ I say with a wink. Plus, it’s Friday night. We’ve got nothing but time."

Murder on the Steel Pier

A Tess Mancini Time Travel Mystery

By

Rosie Genova

Genres: An Adult Time Travel Historical Mystery (with cozy noir elements)

Publisher: Two Roses Press

Publication Date: March 31, 2025

The morning after a blowout thirty-fifth birthday celebration in Atlantic City, crime reporter and party girl Tess Mancini wakes up in an unfamiliar place—1955. Bread is eighteen cents a loaf, Ike occupies the White House, and the Boardwalk is crawling with vintage cars and vintage wise guys. A bewildered Tess is sure of only two things: One, she’s not crazy, and two, the clothes are fabulous. And somehow, she’s living the life of her Great Aunt Theresa, who disappeared decades before Tess’s birth.

In her 1950s existence, Tess is a reporter for the local newspaper, living and working at a boarding house owned by her Zia Antonetta, an Italian immigrant with secrets of her own. Tess also discovers that Theresa has a kid brother, teenaged troublemaker Val Mancini—also known as Tess’s paternal grandfather. Though determined to return to her own time, Tess’s curiosity takes over. What happened to the first Theresa Mancini? And is Tess’s trip through time somehow connected to her aunt’s fate?

But when young Val is accused of murdering a boarding house guest, a Nazi in hiding, Tess ends up with two investigations on her hands, and though desperate to leave the Nifty Fifties, she’s stuck in time until she can prove Val’s innocence. As she searches for answers, she finds allies in a dishy police detective and a suspiciously charming fellow reporter. She also crosses paths with a Mid-Century icon of science—possibly the one person who can help her get back home—but not until she finds a way to keep her grandfather off Death Row.

Because before Tess can get back to the future … she needs to make sure she has one.

Excerpt:

Tess, hungover and hazy after her Atlantic City birthday celebration, has awakened in an old-fashioned boarding house instead of her modern hotel. The people there seem to know her, but to Tess they are strangers. Complicating this confusing experience is a voice that cuts through Tess’s thoughts, and she is determined to flee from this disorienting place. She borrows some clothes, throws on a man’s jacket and boots she finds in the house, and decides to walk toward the Boardwalk, taking stock of her surroundings:

I’d ended up in a residential part of AC, as there wasn’t a casino in sight. But there was something else—a pungent barnyard smell of poultry wafting on the air. Were there farms in Atlantic City?

I turned to face the street, and for a moment, my vision blurred. The images in front of me seemed to shift before they came into sharp focus. Parked across the street was an old dairy truck; a man emerged from it, wearing a flat cap and a plaid jacket that was a twin for the one I had on. He carried two metal baskets, and with each step he took, I could hear the clink of milk bottles. Milk bottles? He waved and nodded; in a trance, I did the same.

I stepped down from the curb to cross the street, but waited to let a car pass. It was big, black, high, and round. And old. Years old, like everything else on this street and in that house behind me. What was this place? It wasn’t a movie set because there were no sound trucks or trailers. An antique car show? A man whose dark suit and overcoat fit right in with those old cars tipped his hat to me as he passed.

“Oh, my God,” I said aloud as the light dawned. “It’s like one of those Renaissance fairs.” Only it was a Mid-Century version, and I’d somehow stumbled into it last night in an alcoholic stupor. But that still didn’t explain how these people knew me. Nor my missing clothes, phone, and wallet. I automatically shoved my hands into the jeans pockets, but of course I came up empty. I wouldn’t last much longer without my phone. My life was on that phone.

As I reached the corner, I looked up at an old-fashioned street sign. Bellevue Avenue, (fitting, I thought, given how crazy this was) which intersected with Atlantic. I was heading for the Boardwalk, so I’d just keep going until I could find a taxi. Though paying for it might be a little tricky without any money. Shuffling along in the oversize boots, I was about to cross the street when I was startled by a deep voice behind me.

“Stop right where ya are,” he barked. “Hands outta your pockets. And make sure you turn around slow.”

I did as he said, my hands at my sides and my heart thrumming in my chest. Dressed similarly to the other men I’d seen on the street, he was wearing a gray suit but no tie, his hat pulled down low over one side of his face. At six feet, he towered over me, and his dark eyes and moustache gave him an old movie star quality. I thought fleetingly of the movie star photo I’d seen in The Other Tess’s bedroom. This guy also had thick brows and lashes, but there the similarity ended.

This man’s expression was grim, and when he turned, I choked back a gasp. A satiny white scar ran from his left cheekbone, cutting through his moustache and puckering the side of his mouth. My eyes shifted from the scar and back to his dark eyes. Eyes that were somehow familiar. I felt a small shiver that had nothing to do with the cold. “Just where do you think you’re going?” he asked gruffly.

“Nowhere. I mean, I was trying to hail a cab—”

And then that other voice sounded again. Her voice, excited and a little breathless: Joe! Okay, she knows him. So maybe I could talk my way out of whatever was happening. “So, uh, Joe,” I began, “I really have to be somewhere—”

“I don’t think so.” He took his hand from his suit pocket and flipped open a leather case bearing a gold badge that read “Detective Joseph O’Brien.” Help me out here, Theresa-With-An-H. But she was silent.

I swallowed nervously. “Are you arresting me? I mean, I didn’t do anything.”

He pocketed his badge and then produced another item associated with police officers. “Hands out, please.”

My eyes widened. “Oh, hell no! Are you out of your mind?”

He raised his dark brows. “Such language from a lady,” he said, and before I could utter another word, snapped a set of antique handcuffs around my wrists. “I’m arresting you for the theft of those clothes. You’re coming with me.”

Quill and Ink Tours

I first had the idea for Murder on the Steel Pier nearly a decade ago. At the time, young Millennials were re-discovering Atlantic City; new resorts were going up with lots of amenities and new, sleek casinos. AC wasn’t just the place for buses full of senior citizens coming to gamble for the day, but a destination for bridal and bachelor parties and romantic getaways.

My late mom, amused by all this sudden interest in Atlantic City, told me about the resort town she remembered in the pre-casino 40s and 50s—the gorgeous old hotels, the bustling boardwalk, and all the live entertainment, much of it presented on the Steel Pier. And then my writer’s mind latched upon an idea that refused to let go: What if one of these thirty-something Millennials went to AC for a blow-out celebration and woke up in 1955? And then had to solve a murder of which her own grandfather was accused?

The story finally came to fruition last year. I threw myself into my research of the mid-Fifties—global events, pop culture, and Atlantic City itself. So when my main character, Tess, finds herself in this world she is simultaneously charmed and horrified. She falls in love with the clothes, for example, but struggles with girdles and single-leg stockings. (Not to mention the ironing.) All the food tastes better, but it’s way too carb-heavy for a modern Millennial. Dishes need to be washed by hand and wet clothes hung on the line. More seriously, as a woman navigating the 1950s, Tess doesn’t have the freedom, independence, or autonomy she’s used to in her former life, in which she’s a crime reporter. She’s forced to conduct her investigation in roundabout ways and to rely on the help of two men, a WWII vet police detective, and a charming newspaper colleague bearing a striking resemblance to the young Paul Newman (whom Tess only knows as “Salad Dressing Guy”!).

So, if you found yourself somewhere in the Nifty Fifties, what would seem appealing? To what would you give a great big “No, thanks”? I’m also happy to field questions in the comments!
