“I have come to understand more than I once did about the nature of truth. Truth is, dare I say it, ‘fungible.’ Different versions are traded like tchotchkes as if none have any meaning except to distract… I’ve also found that people believe most ardently in what they wish were the truth. Whereas the actual truth, like the cry of a trapped miner, is but a muffled echo sounding from a cavern of the damned.”

Brian Anderson is a graduate of the University of Minnesota whose Dinkytown neighborhood provides the setting for his mystery series featuring private investigator Lyle Dahms. The Dahms novels spring from his lifelong love of mystery fiction, especially the works of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, as well as more contemporary masters like Robert B. Parker and G.M. Ford. He is a three-time finalist in the Pacific Northwest Writers Association mystery and suspense contest.

Brian spent much of his professional career working to alleviate domestic hunger serving as the operations director of the Emergency Feeding Program of Seattle & King County as well as the manager of the Pike Market Food Bank in downtown Seattle. Married with three beautiful daughters, he now lives and writes in Ocean Shores, a small city on the Washington coast.

Half a Faerie

Faeries of Door County Book 1

by Toni Cabell

Genre

 Clean Paranormal Romantic Comedy

When a hunky, human rock star stands up at his best friend’s wedding, he never expects to encounter vampires, werewolves, and the woman of his dreams. But she’s not what she seems… she’s half a faerie.

Will Rossi was the male half of the hottest singing-songwriting team in the country, until his ex-partner split up their act and left a trail of unflattering stories in her wake. With paparazzi hounding him and creditors harassing him, Will desperately needs a change of luck.

Traveling to the Midwest for his buddy’s wedding isn’t the lucky break Will had in mind—until he meets the wedding planner—and now he can’t stop thinking about Cassia Spellman. Whatever it takes, Will must see her again, but first he’s getting his eyes examined—because everyone in her quirky town appears to have fur, fangs, or wings.

Single mom Cassia has her hands full raising her faerie daughter and planning weddings for Door County’s supernatural population. The last thing she needs is Will Rossi in her life, with his velvety brown eyes and stubbled jawline.

Besides, she can’t fall for him anyway—he’s human, she’s half faerie—and the elder council would never approve. Since Cassia and Will could never be together, she’s determined to stop thinking about him.

Why can’t Rossi the Rocker just take a hint and go away?

If you’re looking for sweet, slow-burn romance with swoony kisses, second chances, and funny, heartwarming characters, don’t miss the Faeries of Door County, a clean paranormal romance series for fans of K. M. Shea and Dusty Rose. Set in the same interconnected world, each book is a happily-ever-after standalone story that can be read in any order.

Praise for Half a Faerie:

"The perfect blend of Hallmark Christmas movie with small town fantasy... If you enjoy supernatural characters, small town charm (think Gilmore Girls) and a romance as sweet as the first sip of hot chocolate on Christmas morning, then you need to treat yourself to this book!" (Cynthia, Goodreads Review)

“From the very first line, I wanted a plush blanket and some hot chocolate while I escaped into this world! The vibes are sweet and cozy and I absolutely adored it… Have snacks on hand when you read because the meals Toni described in this book had me drooling!” (Beth, Goodreads Review)

“This story was filled with swoony moments, holiday cheer, magical creatures, delicious food, and lots of happy weddings. The characters were so relatable and the added moments of humor was so much fun! I cannot wait to read book 2!” (Sarah, Amazon Review)

“A fun Christmas read with plenty of weddings, second chances, and a town full of supernatural creatures. It was sweet with just the right amount of angst and some interesting thoughts on how to move on from a relationship that feels like it stole everything from you.” (Abigail, Amazon Review)

Will’s POV: Excerpt from Chapter 19, “Snow Squalls and Snowballs,” Half a Faerie

“Here, allow me.” I send half a dozen snowballs whizzing after the boys’ retreating backs.

“Well done!” Cassia’s uncle chuckles. “They’ll be ready for hot cocoa soon enough.”

Cassia scoops up some snowballs and dashes after a couple of lads attempting an end-run around us. I chase after her, ostensibly to lend a hand with the snow fight, but mostly to stay near her. She tosses her snowballs at the two boys, hitting both in the back. Laughing, they quickly disperse.

Cassia pulls her arm back again, spins around, and lets loose another snowball that lands squarely in my face. She’s hit me on purpose! I’m momentarily stunned as icy water blurs my shades and drips into my eyes. I decide to milk this opportunity for all it’s worth.

“Foul ball!” I cry, clutching my face.

Cassia runs up to me. “Oh, Will, I’m so sorry! I was aiming for your chest. Are you okay?”

Shielding my face with one hand, I turn away, moaning. As Cassia tries to pull my hand away to inspect the damage, I bring my other hand up and shove a fistful of snow inside the back of her jacket.

Cassia yelps, “Cheater!” and gives me a push.

I topple backward into a snowbank. Cassia loses her footing and falls down on top of me. She’s so stunning in this moment, with snowflakes on her eyelashes and her cheeks flushed with cold, I’m rendered speechless.

I wrap my arms around her waist and hug her to myself. My pulse is pounding so hard I’m sure she must feel it through the layers of winter clothing. Our noses are nearly touching, and my breath becomes ragged. Her lips part, probably in surprise, as I tilt my head and gently kiss her.

The warmth of her mouth against mine ripples through me like a heat wave. As I lean in to deepen the kiss, a pile of wet snow lands on our heads.

Cassia breaks free of my arms and jumps up, shaking the snow out of her long, honey-colored hair. She points at someone behind my head, scoops up some snow, and shouts, “Jake! You’re gonna pay for that!”

Jake laughs. “Not if you can’t catch me.”

A low moan escapes from me as Cassia runs off, chasing after her brother, who clearly doesn’t want me chasing after his sister.

If Cassia doesn’t have a word with Jake soon and tell him to butt out, I will.

A short while later our team is declared the winner, and everyone troops back to the Sit for a Spell Café, stomping boots on the mats near the entrance and pulling off sodden mittens and caps.

I pause to take a sniff. Mingled with the delicious aroma of chocolate, cinnamon, and butter, I detect the not-so-pleasant odor of damp dog fur. I quickly scan the café but find no huge sled dogs on the premises. I see the gargoyles have changed positions though; now they’re leaning forward, their noses wrinkled, as if they, too, detect wet canines close at hand.

I notice Jake, who scratches his neck as he nods in my direction. I set my jaw and give him a curt nod in return. Jake may be the mayor of Riddle Hill, but there’s nothing he can say or do that’ll dissuade me from pursuing Cassia Spellman.

Frozen Lives by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush

A Coroner's Daughter Mystery

Dr. Emily Hartford is back in Frozen Lives, the next thrilling mystery from Jennifer Graeser Dornbush.

Chicago surgeon Emily Hartford has never quite shaken off the dust of her hometown in Michigan. She may be a professional success and have a princely boyfriend in the Windy City, but she can’t seem to let go of being “the coroner’s daughter” from Freeport.

Once again, she finds herself pulled back upstate during a wintery late March when Jeremiah, the eleven year-old son of her best friend, Jo, goes missing on the frigid shores of Lake Michigan. Emily immediately joins the search for the boy.

To everyone’s relief, Jeremiah turns up days later, alive and unharmed. But tensions remain high, and suspicions of every sort continue to grow. Jeremiah’s account of his abduction doesn’t add up and Emily worries about Jo’s unraveling marriage. Jeremiah’s recovery, it turns out, is not the end of their terrifying tale. It’s only the beginning …

For moving among them is a devious, malevolent force. Sowing panic while seeking to fulfill his own twisted needs, this wolf in sheep’s clothing leaves a trail of rack and ruin, negligent to the damages in his wake … and the bodies he leaves behind.

Emily solidifies her role as coroner’s daughter when she puzzles out this madman’s chilling machinations. Risking everything dear to her, Emily goes the icy distance to end his killing spree.

A Modern Midlife Christmas Carol

Christmas cheer was dead, to begin with.

The world rests on Eliza’s shoulders. The kids, her husband, work, her elderly mother and don’t forget her newest friend, perimenopause. It’s too much to carry, but she’s been doing it for years. It’s just what a good wife and mother does, isn’t it?

When another Christmas rolls around, Eliza is drained by all the expectations and logistics of the holiday season. She’s fast approaching her breaking point, only no one around her notices she’s on the edge.

After an incident at her in-law’s on Christmas Eve brings things to a boiling point, she finds herself with three unexpected visitors. The spirits of the past, present, and future take her on a journey through her life to shake her out of the rut she’s gotten into. Their messages leave her with new possibilities: reconnect with her past, reclaim her present, or forge a new future, and you, the reader, decide which option is best!

Excerpt

This scene takes place on the long car ride to Eliza’s brother-in-law’s house. He is Edward, his young wife is Dymond, and their three-year-old son is Derby. Eliza is married to Jacob and traveling with their two teenage children, Bella and Bobby.

She tried to stretch her legs out as far as she could while inside a vehicle. She was tired and sore from being in the car for hours, heading toward people she didnt want to be with, for a holiday that felt like a prison sentence.

Whos getting excited?” Jacobs voice was annoyingly chipper.

Another tiny piece of Elizas spirit shriveled up and died, never to be revived. No. Excitement was certainly not on the menu for this holiday experience, but she had foreboding and dread in spades.

It seemed like shed only just started to recover from the debacle that was Thanksgiving when Christmas staggered onto the scene like a bombastic visitor who didnt know when to call it a night. The holiday season was a brutal and relentless beast.

Five miles to go until our exit! Well be there before you know it!” Jacob was like Clark Griswold from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation getting stupidly excited about his light display.

Eliza side-eyed her husband from the passenger seat. She had no idea what was making him so giddy when all she could imagine was Derby running around destroying things for a week straight, while Edward bragged about money and vacations, and Dymond pouted at her phone to make every second Insta-worthy.

Bella and Bobby had their earbuds firmly in place since theyd entered the vehicle hours before. It was a wonder their eyes hadnt permanently dried out and crumbled to dust from staring at their phones the whole way. They hadnt heard a word their father said, nor would they care if they had. Family events werent the definition of excitement for most teenagers of any generation, and certainly not for these two.

The silence answering Jacobs question stretched on, but Eliza couldnt bear to respond. It wasnt a secret to Jacob that Eliza was no fan of Dymonds. Not that shed been besties with Edwards first wife either, but at least Michelle had spoken regular English, not the social media jargon gibberish Dymond used. Eliza didnt understand half the things Dymond talked about, nor did she care. She had real life to deal with. Who had time to worry about curating a fake visual guide to their lives for strangers on an app?

Aiden O’Rourke needed cash to help pay for college so he made money by selling his sperm. He was young, attractive, smart…and popular. Now many years later, his offspring are coming forward—eleven of them and counting—and connecting on a website they created called Donor73101.com.

Pat Pirard, Santa Cruz County Law Librarian turned PI, is approached by next door neighbors Tina and Robin who want to start a family. Because Tina was conceived via sperm donation, they want to be 100% certain that their baby and Tina won’t have the same father.

It doesn’t take Pat long to determine that Aiden O’Rourke was Tina’s sperm donor. It also doesn’t take her long to discovers that one by one, his offspring are being murdered. By whom and why? Well, that’s a mystery.

Excerpt

Although it was only a few minutes past 6:30pm, it was dark, not unexpected in Santa Cruz in early January. The Uber driver popped his hatchback and offered to help them with luggage. Tim declined, moving the four suitcases―one for him and three for Pat―on to the sidewalk.

Pat started to pick one up. “Leave it,” Tim instructed. “We can come back outside for those in a minute, but before we bring in suitcases, I want to carry my bride across the threshold.”

Pat giggled. “I’m a modern woman. No carrying needed.”

“That may be, but I’m feeling old-fashioned at the moment.” He smiled at her, put one arm around her back just above her waist, and attempted to scoop her into his arms.

She slipped away from him, laughing as she did. “I bet you can’t catch me before I get inside on my own, my old-fashioned caveman,” she flirted, heading for the front door.

“I can be a caveman if that’s how you want to be carried, but you’re being carried,” he said, his tone full of playful mischief. He gave chase and tossed her over his shoulder when he caught her.

Pat squealed, but was laughing too hard to resist, which is how she came to greet her tail-wagging Dalmatian, Dot, who jumped against Tim’s backside in an attempt to get her head up high enough for the backward slung Pat to scratch her ears; her cat, Wimsey, who abandoned his rule about avoiding Tim and rubbed against his legs, and Tina and Robin, their pet-sitting next-door neighbors, butt-first, draped over Tim’s shoulder.
