As the dark shroud of night enveloped the land, Anna couldn’t banish the haunting voice from her dreams. The same one that echoed through the forest earlier.

She huddled closer to the warmth of the hearth as the chill of night crept in.

The savory aroma of stew filled her home. As she stirred the pot, she peered into her bubbling dinner. It was almost done. Sinking back into her chair, she pulled the quilt tighter around her shoulders.

A bushel of apples from the Fields sat nearby. She would make them into a pie later this evening. Her last evening.

Anna settled into her straw chair to wait for the stew when a loud knock echoed at the door.

Who could be knocking at this hour?

Setting the ladle on the hearth, she padded toward the door as the floorboards creaked beneath her slippers. She gripped the door handle and froze, standing there for a moment, listening to the wind tremble outside.

Who—or what—was on the other side? It could be Miss Lila coming to check on her. Goodness forbid, it was Gideon Marsh trying to lure her back to his home.

Maybe it was Miss Deena worried about her impulsive decision to leave the town without considering the consequences.

Anna held her head up. It was her decision and hers alone. And she would stand by it even more to protect the remaining ones she cared about.

She swung the door open, ready to say the words when…

There was no one.

Nothing but howling gusts against the dark night.

Anna hugged the worn quilt around her tightly, peering out into the empty darkness. The door was handle cool against her fingertips as she reached for it. Clutching it, she spotted a parchment tucked under a tiny pumpkin at her feet.

A heavy exhale followed by a high-pitched neigh and the clomping of hooves echoed through the stillness of the night. Two magnificent horses emerged from the fog, dragging a lavish carriage made of gold and velvet. Delicate tinted windows sat on each side of the carriage, too dark for her to see inside.

The door creaked open, and she waited for someone to step out.

But there was no one inside.

Was she dreaming? She had to be. There was no way this was truly happening…

She peered at the note again, spotting the elegant cursive written on the other side of the envelope: Invitation from the Pumpkin King.

A shaky breath escaped her.

She wasn’t dreaming. This was real.

Opening the envelope, she pulled out the parchment paper and read it, trying to decipher the words under the moonlight.

This carriage will bring you to where you seek. You need only board it and whisper your readiness. ~TPK

This was it—her threshold to the beyond.

The Power of Three by Teri Polen Excerpts

Excerpt #1

My gaze slid to the headstone beside them. Macie Williams Teller. It looked like Cousin Macie had been their mother. How sad that she’d outlived all three of her children. The pain she’d experienced must have been unfathomable, and she’d lost her sons on the same day. I imagined Mom losing two of us like that. It would destroy her. Dad, too. Sure, they’d still have two of us left, but a loss like that rips your soul apart, and it never quite fits back together the way it once did.

On the other side of Macie’s grave was Thomas Teller, who I presumed was her husband. He’d passed away five years before their sons. My heart ached for Macie. She’d lost her husband and children far too early, then lived in this big house all alone until she died last year.

I turned and once again looked over the sea of graves before me. Dozens and dozens of them. Dad was an only child and beyond his parents, I’d never really known any other family on his side. But this branch of the Tellers wasn’t a small family by any means. All these people were related to me in some way. According to Macie’s attorney, my father was the last of the Tellers.

What happened to this family?

Frit Woman by Kate Rigby Blog Tour!

 Fruit Woman

Fruit Woman is narrated by Helen Scutt, a quirky and naïve twenty-seven-year-old. The image of the Fruit Woman has appeared to Helen at important times in her life, particularly in relation to her own sexual and spiritual awakening.

But only now, while on holiday with her extended family, does she get her first warning message from the Fruit Woman. Set in the l980s, Helen returns with her extended family, after a twelve year break, to spend a fortnight at their favourite holiday destination in Devon: Myrtle Cottages.

Due to join them for the second week of the holiday are: Helen's old friend, Bella, Bella's brother, Dominic, and Helen's cousin, Les. But shortly after the family have arrived on holiday, Helen's mother announces that she has also invited along someone from church for the second week of their holiday: Christine Wigg, a friend of the family, and victim of a rape several years before.

In the context of the family holiday, where games of cards, scatological worries, and deep discussions abound, the story centres on Helen's anxieties over the second week's 'guest list'.

She's not seen Bella for years, she’s attracted to Dominic in spite of his religious beliefs, and she thinks it a bad idea for her mother to have invited Les, who was originally accused of Christine's rape by her in-laws. Helen's concerns trigger off all sorts of childhood and adolescent memories, but as her anxieties mount, can she make sense at last of what happened years before?

Chapter 1- Kate

“One more pinch of toad wart, a sprinkle of dried rosemary, and a dash of dragon's breath. That should do it, Kate.” Cassie smiled as she wiped her hands on her blue apron adorned with flying cats and dogs.

The aroma of herbs filled the shop, mingling with the sound of fire crackling in the background. The arrival of autumn was sudden and fierce, like a train barreling through our small town of Denny Bay.

I watched Cassie work her magic. She has improved a great deal since we started brewing together. I’d helped her hone her skills, and she had helped me with my newfound powers of channeling nature. “You forgot one ingredient.” I laughed while reaching for a jar of shimmering moon dust on the top shelf. As I sprinkled it into the bubbling cauldron, the potion let out a soft hum and bubbled with a shimmering sheen.

“Oh, flying broomsticks! I always forget the moon dust.” She frowned as she shook her head. Cassie’s blonde, wavy hair sparkled in the warm glow of the fire. “I’ll remember next time.”

"Don’t worry about it, Cass. We all have those moments," I reassured her with a grin, knowing that her overabundance of excitement for everything she did could lead her to overlook the finer details. Cassie was always moving faster than everyone else. Her wit outmatched most, and her ability to care for nature had always been something I admired.

"It smells perfect," Cassie said, taking a deep breath in through her nose. She had been brewing the potion for a few months now, perfecting the recipe as we gained a reputation as the go-to place for anyone in need of a little extra joy in their life.

She carefully poured the potion into small vials, labeling them with neat handwriting. Each one was unique, tailored to the individual who had requested it. Some were for heartache, others for anxiety or stress. Whatever the ailment, we had a potion for it.

Working with Cassie had become more than just brewing potions with my bestie. We had a true partnership. We blended our unique talents to create something truly magical for the supernatural folk of Denny Bay and beyond. I was just so thrilled. She was happy, and I was happy, and now we could grow the business together like Gram would have wanted.

“This should last the rest of the week. Maybe you should take some time off. I can’t imagine your new husband loves being alone most days.”

“Wilder knows I’m committed to the shop and to Monster Match,” Cassie said with a smile. “But he does ask me to come home as soon as I can before I even step off the castle’s grounds.”

“That sounds about right. I think you should take the rest of the week off. This is our slow time.”

“It won’t be that slow. Our busiest week is coming up,” Cassie said with an excited grin.

“It’s over a month away. If it’s Halloween you’re talking about.” I laughed.

“You know it’s my favorite time of year. I can’t help but love all the decorations, the pumpkin spice muffins, and let’s not forget Mabel’s famous pumpkin pie, which will be on display at the fair in only a few weeks.”

“Oh, Cass, you crack me up. Take the week off. It’s only September. We have plenty of time for all of that.”

Cassie paused to consider my suggestion, her eyes lighting up with excitement. "Maybe it wouldn't hurt to take a little break," she finally conceded, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "I could use some quality time with Wilder, and maybe even plan a little surprise for him."

I chuckled at her obvious eagerness. "Oh, I can only imagine what kind of surprise you have in mind. Just promise me it won't involve any love potions this time."

Cassie feigned innocence, batting her eyelashes playfully. "Who, me? Use a love potion on my own husband? Perish the thought! Lesson learned." Her face reddened as her mind likely drifted off to an embarrassing moment. One that I hoped she didn’t share.

Title: Guarded from Sabotage (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha) (Blade and Arrow Security Bravo Team Book 2)

Author: Gia Cobie

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release Date: November 12, 2024

Hosted by: Buoni Amici Press, LLC.

I never imagined my life could fall apart so quickly. It all started when my credit card was stolen. I chalked it up to bad luck. A minor annoyance. Until more things started happening—fraudulent loans taken out in my name, my bank accounts drained, and I was even accused of a crime I couldn’t possibly have committed.

And it became terrifyingly clear this wasn’t just bad luck. This was intentional. Someone was methodically tearing apart my entire life, and when I tried to get help, no one would believe me. As the walls closed in, I kept asking myself, who would do this to me? Where can I turn?

Then my best friend connected me with Blade and Arrow Security, and I realized there’s a silver lining in all this. Dante. A man I met once and never forgot. He believes me. And as this identity theft turns to something much more dangerous, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect me.

There was a spark from the first time we met. When I met Sarah at our friends’ wedding, there was just something about her that drew me. But she wasn’t available, and I wasn’t looking for a relationship. Not to mention, she lived almost two thousand miles from me.

A year and a half later, everything changed. I moved to Texas to start up the new branch of Blade and Arrow Security with a group of former Green Berets, just like me. Not long after, Sarah came to us for help. When I go to meet her, she’s just as amazing as I remember. Beautiful. Smart. Kind.

Single. And now we live less than a hundred miles from each other. Close enough to see if this spark between us can turn into something more. Except she’s a client, and I’m in charge of her case. And I’m worried that pursuing a relationship will cloud my focus. Put her in more danger than she already is. But it’s getting harder to deny my feelings for her. And the more time I spend with her, the less I want to.

Tears well up, and I sniff against them as I say, “When I told them my car was stolen, they said I was wrong. It wasn’t. The car company repossessed my car. I didn’t know.” My words get higher and faster. “I always pay on time, Dante. Always. Even with all of this… I know I made my last payment. I did.”

“Sarah…” He carefully cradles my hand between his. “I’m sure you did.”

“They think I’m making it all up. First the car in Austin, then reporting my car stolen here… I don’t even know if they believe I was mugged. They—” A sob escapes. “They probably think I’m making that up, too.”

Dante’s expression shifts from compassion to anger.

In a cold tone he directs at the police, he says, “This is unacceptable. Denying basic first aid? Treating her like she’s a criminal instead of a victim? I’ll be speaking to my contacts on the force about this.”

Then he turns his attention to me, and his expression softens. “I’m so sorry, Sarah. For all of this.”

His kindness after everything is my undoing, and I burst into tears.

Claire

It’s probably going to sound crazy to you, but I felt as though someone was watching me all the time, night, and day. You know how it is—you sense these things. Well, I did, anyway.

That’s right; I could sense it. A hole the size of a crater slowly burned in the back of my head, created by their stares. By ‘they,’ it wasn’t clear who it was that watched me yet.

But they were there, for sure.

An eerie silence had seemed to follow me everywhere, and it was impossible to shake that feeling of someone observing from afar. Someone spying, tracking me.

Knowing everything…

I shook my head quickly as if it could banish the intrusiveness from my head.

Damn, these wretched thoughts! I said to myself. But every time, a chill would run down my spine like icy fingertips tracing their way up and down my back. Taunting me, Poking fun at me.

My eyes darted, nervously searching for any sign of movement in the crowd, but there wasn’t anyone out of place; everyone seemed totally normal. Well, except for me, of course.

Okay, I’m just exaggerating, but you know how it is when you feel pursued like that.

I almost dared not glance back, afraid to ask who it could be, feeling as if they were observing me again, peering in on everything like a pervert.

The idea sent shivers up my spine, making the hair on my arms and back stand on end. And my gut clenched as if it would make me vomit, just that sensation of someone there, knowing everything I did, every tiny move. Initially, a tingling came to my scalp, which gradually traveled down my head and neck before settling into the back of my skull.

It was the same nervousness that had pervaded me when taking my dental admission test; it was that cold bite gnawing at my gut, a feeling unwilling to go away. This was a warning, and that was clear; a terrible thing was about to occur.

It was an omen, a premonition if you like. Something very bad would be coming my way.

Soon.

To try and regain my composure, I closed my eyes.

There was little doubt that if Stephen had overheard me saying all this, he’d have me committed to a mental institution.

I needed to zero down on the task at hand.

So, I took a half-day off work, using it to come here.

I’m all by myself now. See. Look around! Who can wish me harm?

Choosing the proper dress for the charity ball hadn’t been easy either; after all, who liked wasting time wandering from store to store? I supposed some girls didn’t mind it. Some even claimed to like shopping. As for me, it was loathsome, a chore, and irritating.

However, the attire had to be suitable for the occasion. The planning committee had chosen to preserve the masquerade ball theme for this year’s event.

Phyllis was in charge this year, so Stephen and I wanted to show our support.

I had little interest in the woman, but as Stephen often reminded me, I should “be nice, Claire.” He played golf with her husband, Bob, you see, and Bob happened to be Stephen’s long-time friend and business partner. Both were decent guys; they wanted me to back Phyllis up and ensure the event went well. It was something I had to do—according to Stephen.

And Stephen was never wrong about this kind of thing, was he?

But Phyllis was the kind of person who always seemed to try too hard. She needed to be liked to extremes, so she was a bit of a people pleaser, always fussing about something.

It all had to be just so, just perfect. So annoying. Everyone had to love everything about her, big or small as if she would implode if you missed a moment’s flattery.

Phyllis had an oblong face framed by a short blonde bob hairstyle that she thought made her look stylish and sophisticated, but to me, it smacked of desperation and made her look maternal.

But despite this, people seemed to love her enthusiastic and friendly demeanor. Phyllis would pop up no matter where she went or what group she joined.

“Everything all right for you, dear?”

Or “Oh, your hair is lovely, dear,” she would say.

Or “Wherever did you buy such a divine dress?”

“Look at you,” she enthused. “Your makeup is so on point today! Very pretty, sweetie.”

Ugh. Her words were creepy, all this excessive enthusiasm about every topic imaginable. I’d look around me when it happened, and the weird thing was that everyone around Phyllis looked as if they felt charmed by her efforts. But weren’t they ultimately exhausted from all the energy being thrown their way, like I was?

And then there was that other thing—the other side of her.
