Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Author and speaker Rosemary Griggs has been researching Devon’s sixteenth-century history for years. She has discovered a cast of fascinating characters and an intriguing network of families whose influence stretched far beyond the West Country and loves telling the stories of the forgotten women of history – the women beyond the royal court; wives, sisters, daughters and mothers who played their part during those tumultuous Tudor years: the Daughters of Devon.

Her novel A Woman of Noble Wit tells the story of Katherine Champernowne, Sir Walter Raleigh’s mother, and features many of the county’s well-loved places.

Rosemary creates and wears sixteenth-century clothing, a passion which complements her love for bringing the past to life through a unique blend of theatre, history and re-enactment. Her appearances and talks for museums and community groups all over the West Country draw on her extensive research into sixteenth-century Devon, Tudor life and Tudor dress, particularly Elizabethan.

Out of costume, Rosemary leads heritage tours of the gardens at Dartington Hall, a fourteenth-century manor house and now a visitor destination and charity supporting learning in arts, ecology and social justice.

Excerpt

Clotilde looked up at me from where she’d crouched to adjust the hem of my dress and smiled.

‘Beautiful, ma petite,’ she murmured. ‘You’re a sight to melt the hardest heart.’ I managed a tentative smile in return, a little laugh, but words were beyond me. Anne Cecil reached for my hand and squeezed it, and together the two women ushered me to the door of the chamber. I set out bravely, swishing along the corridor towards the queen’s chapel with my hair unbound. Anne had helped me dress in the blue-green damask gown and lent me the prettiest ruff collar. My sleeves were trimmed with pearls and I wore velvet slippers embroidered with little flowers. I should have felt wonderful decked out so for my wedding day. But my stomach was turning over and over, like one of the queen’s tumblers who’d entertained us the night before. I had a sour taste in my mouth as I braced myself to give a convincing performance. Anne Cecil squeezed my hand and fell in behind me and I saw Papa waiting at the door, his face wreathed in smiles. Sir Arthur stood beside him, grinning like a cat with its paw in the cream jug. Maman, resplendent in her best court gown, and Lady Hereford smiled their encouragement.

Beyond them all Gawen waited. His eyes did not turn as the splendidly dressed lords and ladies made way for me. I took my place beside him but still he stared straight ahead, one foot tapping impatiently on the brightly tiled floor. I risked a quick peep at him. I felt the bright smile I had painted on my face slipping a little when I saw the cold glint in his eyes.

At last Queen Elizabeth made her majestic entrance and drew eyes away from us. It was over in no time. I mumbled my vows. Gawen said his in a flat voice with no feeling at all. He did not venture to kiss his bride. We knelt before Queen Elizabeth for her blessing.

‘You will go to France, young sir, to learn something of the language and customs there, that you may better understand your wife,’ she commanded and a ripple of laughter spread through the throng. I knew, of course, that she was really sending Gawen over to France to have him act as spy for Walsingham and Anne’s father. ‘Now, Madame Champernowne –’ a titter among the ladies was instantly stifled – ‘Sir Arthur has told me you sing well and play on the virginals, and that you’ve brought with you a boy who is a fine musician,’ the queen continued.

‘Yes, Y-y-your M-majesty,’ I stuttered, feeling suddenly hot. It was the very first time anyone had used my new name.

‘It will please me if you remain at court until the spring to entertain us,’ she announced, in a voice that brooked no questioning. As she spoke she gave me such a penetrating stare that I felt even shakier. Then she turned the same look on my papa who, with a beaming smile, gave her a well-practised bow. I wondered if she was keeping me as some sort of hostage against my father’s good behaviour.

Everyone relaxed a bit after the queen swept from the chapel in a dazzling cloud of sumptuous silks and glittering jewels. A group of the younger ladies-in-waiting swarmed round me to admire my gown. As I tried to extricate myself I looked for Gawen. He was nowhere to be seen. I shot rapid glances round the room, hoping no one had noticed and, feeling the flush creeping up my cheeks, I took Sir Arthur’s arm. When we arrived at the room set aside for the celebratory feast Gawen was already seated and helping himself from a platter.

I sat uncomfortably beside my husband at the wedding breakfast and tried valiantly to engage him in conversation. To be fair he did, at least for a time, make a little effort to play his part before the wedding guests, though his eyes never met mine.

‘Tell me about your ship,’ I ventured after a few abortive sallies, and at last he came to life. He gabbled off lots of strange shipboard names that were beyond my English vocabulary and I mumbled what I hoped were appropriate responses. We might even have looked as though we were enjoying each other’s company, but not for long.

When Pierre came in with some of the queen’s musicians they struck up a tune and all eyes turned on us to lead the dance. Gawen just sat there.

‘Husband,’ I said, trying that word out for the first time and not feeling it applied to us at all, ‘we must lead the dance. Everyone is waiting.’ But Gawen pushed back his seat and stumbled away, murmuring that he must find the jakes. I gritted my teeth and felt as though my flesh was crawling.

Anne came to my rescue.

‘Will you step a measure with me and the other ladies?’ she asked, holding my eyes in her steady gaze.

‘Gladly,’ I answered, beaming. That was the only dance I had on my wedding day.

Determined to prove what she saw, and get justice for the unknown victim, Valerie launches her own investigation. CelticLady’s Reviews—Recipe

Leslie Karst—Recipe from Molten Death

Sesame-Shoyu Poke

(serves 2 as a main dish, or 4 as an appetizer)

Poke (pronounced “poh-kay”) is a delectable dish prepared with marinated, raw fish—often ahi tuna—similar in some ways to ceviche. It is thought to have been made by ancient Polynesians centuries before Western contact, who prepared it with local reef fish, seaweed, crushed kukui nut (candlenut), and sea salt.

It wasn’t until the 1960s, however, that the name “poke” (Hawaiian for “sliced crosswise into pieces”) was given to the dish, and not until the 1990s that it became well known outside of Hawai‘i. Poke’s rise in popularity is due largely to the efforts of Hawaiian chef and television personality, Sam Choy, who tirelessly promoted the local delicacy and even started a poke contest, an event still held each March in Kona, on the Big Island.

Modern poke recipes commonly include shoyu (soy sauce) and roasted sesame oil, ingredients brought to the islands by Japanese and Chinese immigrants, as well as new innovations such as avocado, kimchee, and Sriracha mayonnaise.

Sesame-Shoyu Poke

Ingredients

1 pound sushi-grade ahi tuna, cut into ½ inch cubes

2 teaspoons roasted sesame oil

4 teaspoons soy sauce

2 tablespoon oyster sauce

4 tablespoons green onions, coarsely chopped

4 tablespoons yellow or white onion, coarsely chopped

2 teaspoon sesame seeds

Direction

If your tuna has a dark bloodline running through it, cut this away and discard, as it has an unpleasant flavor. You’ll need about 1 ¾ pounds of ahi that contains a bloodline in order to end up with 1 ½ pounds of useable fish.

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and refrigerate, covered, at least ½ hour (or up to 6 hours) before it’s time to eat. Serve it with crackers or chips as an appetizer, or over steamed rice for a traditional “poke bowl.”

Cal has been down that road before and barely survived when the woman he loved left, taking her two sons with her. He can't bear to lose like that again.

Before construction on the house can begin, Landry's pottery is destroyed in a suspicious fire. It soon becomes clear that Landry and Eliza are in grave danger--but because of whom? But, after losing one relationship, he is hesitant to try again.

Read an excerpt:

They passed several offices before they reached an open door.

“Maisy. Stay.” That same deep voice from the intercom floated to the hallway.

“Oooh! A dog!” Eliza dashed into the room.

Her little sprite was fast and already halfway across the office before Landry realized what was happening. “Eliza, wait!” Fortunately, she stopped at Landry’s words.

“I know, Mommy. Never touch a dog without permission. I just want to see.”

Eliza turned her big brown eyes toward the man who had come around his desk and knelt beside a dog now quivering with excitement.

The man—Callum Shaw, she assumed—met her daughter’s eyes and said, “Your mom’s right. You can’t ever rush at a dog, even dogs as gentle as this big baby. But if it’s okay with your mom . . .”

His eyes, which were as blue as the Carolina sky, now met hers. There was humor and gentleness. And shadows. Something dark flitted across his gaze. But then he blinked and it was gone.

Landry nodded her permission, and he turned all his attention back to her daughter. “This is Maisy. She’s a golden retriever. She’s three years old. She loves long walks in the woods, sunbathing, peanut butter, and belly rubs.” He demonstrated the belly rub. Maisy melted under his touch, and Eliza crept closer. “You can pet her. Maisy doesn’t bite my friends.”

Eliza dropped to her knees beside Callum and held out her hand toward Maisy’s nose.

Maisy took a quick sniff and rewarded Eliza’s good behavior with a lick. Callum stayed where he was until it was clear to everyone that Eliza and Maisy were set, then he rose to his feet and extended a hand. “Ms. Hutton.”

“Landry. Please.”

“Landry. A pleasure.”

Landry kept the contact brief. “Sorry, my hands are rough.” She turned them palms up. “Hazards of the job.”

Why had she said that? What did it matter if her hands were a bit on the crispy side? She didn’t have to prove anything to this man. Embarrassment crept across her and burst through her pores, heating her neck and face, and now she had no idea what to do with her hands. Should she put them down? Tuck them behind her back?

Callum glanced at her hands and turned his own up. “Same here.” He heaved a dramatic sigh. “It’s to my eternal despair that I’ll never land that hand modeling contract I’ve always hoped for.”

His easy humor made it automatic to tease him back. “Well, there’s always ditch digging.”

“Good point. If this construction gig doesn’t work out, I’ll have something to fall back on.” Callum turned his attention to Eliza. “And I gather your name is Eliza?”

She giggled with the abandon unique to happy children. “That’s right, but sometimes Mommy calls me Liza or ZaZa, but never Lizzy because that’s too close to Landry, and it gets confusing.”

Landry tried to keep a straight face as Eliza parroted what she’d heard Landry say too many times to count.

“It’s a pleasure, Ms. Eliza.” Callum pressed a hand to his chest. “I’m Cal Shaw. I’ll answer to Callum, but not LumLum because”— he dropped his voice to a stage whisper—“that’s just not dignified.”

Eliza’s laughter filled the room. Bronwyn hadn’t been wrong about Cal Shaw. He was very good with children. Even now, he kept his attention on Eliza. “Are you good here with Maisy while your mom and I talk?”

“Yes, sir.”

Cal grabbed a legal pad and pen from his desk and took the chair opposite the one he directed Landry to sit in. From their seats, they could both see Eliza and Maisy.

She waited for him to start the conversation, but maybe she was supposed to go first?

“She’s a beau—”

“Land—”

They both stopped talking, and his smile seemed genuine as he nodded to her. “Please. Go ahead.”

“I was going to say your dog is beautiful.” She willed her body to stop flushing scarlet, but it refused to cooperate. She didn’t have to see herself to know that her face, neck, chest, and even her feet were on fire. This was why she did best behind the walls of The Haven. She could interact with the patrons there with minimal difficulty. But put her out in public, and she became a tongue-tied, socially inept disaster.

Cal’s grin held mischief, and he leaned toward her. “If all goes as planned, she’ll be pregnant soon. I bet Eliza would love a puppy for Christmas.” His voice was cajoling and teasing, but at least he had the good sense to keep it too low for Eliza to hear.

He winked in a way that was friendly and not flirtatious, and Landry understood why Bronwyn liked him so much. He leaned back and in a normal voice said, “I gathered from your conversation with Carla that you’re going to build nearby.”

“Yes. I have three acres on the edge of Pierce land.” She watched him carefully as she spoke and was unsurprised when his grip tightened on the pen at her words.

“How long have you lived in Gossamer Falls?”

“Long enough to know the Pierce and Quinn families don’t get along.”
