Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Dead is Dead by John Lansing Book Spotlight!

Dead Is Dead by John Lansing

From the “pulse pounding” (Kirkus Reviews) writer of TV hit Walker, Texas Ranger comes a riveting Hollywood thriller that will keep you captivated until the shocking conclusion. Retired Inspector Jack Bertolino gets his first taste of the erratic nature of Hollywood when A-list producer, George Litton, options one of Jack’s recent cases for a film. Jack is engaged as the film’s technical advisor, which stars It Girl Susan Blake. But more importantly, he’s on hand to keep a protective eye on Susan, who’s being harassed by a disturbing cyber-stalker. But that’s not all that starts to turn Jack’s world upside-down. When a six-year-old girl is shot dead in the living room of her family home, just blocks from where the movie is being filmed, Jack realizes there are threads connecting the movie, the murder, a brutal gang of brothers, and a terrifying body count. Will Jack be able to find justice for the young girl and keep Susan safe? Or will this be his last and fatal trip to Hollywood?

Book Spotlight Of A New Trilogy by Author Rosalind Minette!

A Relative Invasion – A trilogy about rivalry, set in 1937-1959.
Written from the point of view of a young boy growing up in the face of war and its consequences. There is war at home and abroad . . .
The first draft of this work was runner up in the Yeovil Prize (novels) 2011. It also reached the editor’s desk of Harper Collins’ writers’ site, Authonomy and therefore won a full review. Extract:  “…a powerful and compelling narrative with strong and relatable characters, and offers an evocative portrayal of England’s war-time home front. Billy is immediately sympathetic and Minett perfectly captures a child’s viewpoint, adding a gentle and honest humour to the story. The mounting tensions between Billy and Kenneth parallel the rising agitation in Europe …”

Book One INTRUSION

3DWWII, two boys, a fateful rivalry

In 1937 young Billy meets  his cousin, idolised, frail but manipulative Kenneth. As the adults worry about war emerging in Europe, the slow burn of  a fateful rivalry develops between the boys. With emotionally distant parents, bullying uncle and manipulative cousin, Billy starts to stutter. The one thing that upholds Billy’s spirits is the Cossack sabre owned by his father’s work colleague. Once seen, never forgotten, the sabre becomes an icon heralding strength and possibly destruction for these cousins.
Historical Novel Society Review. Extract: “…the author very skilfully portrays the misery of being bullied…. “thoroughly enjoyed the book. The research is meticulously done with convincing historical detail.”

Book Two INFILTRATION

Two boys, one family, a world at war –

The invasion continues

Now it’s autumn 1940. Relentless bombing in London means evacuation once again.  Billy is billeted with an elderly couple. Though happy in their care, sinister cousin Kenneth – who is billeted beside Billy’s mother and sister – haunts his life. Billy’s imaginary power from the precious Cossack sabre, now comes only from its photograph.
A catastrophe causes a new invasive threat from Kenneth. This one will affect both their futures permanently. What’s more, the precious photograph goes missing. Can Billy become a hero when his parents are not?
Infiltration tells of childhood resilience in the face of war, rivalry and parenting ignorance. It follows a boy’s growth into personal responsibility.

Book Three, IMPACT (in preparation)

Adolescence, fall-out, their world post-war.

impact_2
1945. The VE party is over and so is evacuation. Bill must tear himself away from his firm attachments in the village and face a new life in post-war Wandsworth.
So much seems to be in ruins, not least the life he had known as a child. One area remains wonderfully stable: supportive Mr Durban and his Cossack sabre.
Kenneth, however, is even more present. Now adolescent, they are developing their separate skills and identities but the context is claustrophobic. Their rivalry increases in intensity culminating in a fearful crisis. All the family’s lives are changed forever. It’s a terrible fall-out, and it is Bill who must take responsibility and find a fair way forward.

About the Author
A chartered psychologist in my other life, I enjoy writing about ordinary people in unusual situations, or unusual people struggling to fit in. My style is light, but even in humorous stories, there is always a dark edge.

Historical fiction: a trilogy set in WWII told from the perspective of a young boy. A Relative Invasion. Book 1, Intrusion, Book 2 Infiltration out in paperback and ebooks. Amazon Ratings 4.8 and 5.0 . Book 3 Impact to follow late 2015.

My collection of ironic short stories, Me-Time Tales: Tea-breaks for mature women and curious men, is available in paperback and e books. New edition, April 28th, 2016.

Crime Shorts, a series. No. 1, updated, new cover. A boy with potential, no. 2, Homed, Kindle only.

Two other novels (psychological dramas) are in the editing stage.

My other interests are Fine Art, Architecture, Dance and my hobby is sculpture. There's a similarity between creating characters in writing and creating forms in three dimensions or ‘cutting them down to size’.

The avatar stands instead of an author headshot. It saucily re-works Picasso's girl to show a word processor rather than a mirror. The two faces represent my serious and irreverent sides, the observer/recorder and the internal/external selves.

On Amazon, I review literary and historical fiction, children's books and some non-fiction. No dystopia, vampire, chick lit. When I like something, I take the trouble to promote it.

I have two blogs: the quirky Me-Time Tales, and characterful writer, about the process of writing, where I also review.

(Darius - in an earlier draft, this (A Relative Invasion) gained the editor’s desk on the (now defunct) writers’ site, Authonomy where it won a full critique.  Here it is:
As well, that same draft was Highly Commended in the Yeovil (novel) prize.

Tensions are brewing in England as World War II is set in motion. As the adults’ anxiety spills over into five-year-old Billy’s world, his own battle is just beginning. An only child, he longs for a playmate, and when his aunt, uncle and cousin move nearby, he thinks his dream has come true. But cousin Kenneth turns out to be darkly manipulative and a bully who haunts Billy’s days, though the adults see only his porcelain looks and flawless manners. With emotionally distant parents who can’t understand his plight, Billy latches on to the idea of owning the precious Cossack sabre of his father’s friend. This icon sustains him through the invasion of Kenneth, evacuation and the shock of war, but will it destroy as well as save him?

Minett weaves a powerful and compelling narrative with strong and relatable characters and offers an evocative portrayal of England’s war-time home front. Billy is immediately sympathetic and Minett perfectly captures a child’s viewpoint, adding a gentle and honest humour to the story. The mounting tensions between Billy and Kenneth parallel the rising agitation in Europe and make the underlying manipulations of war more understandable to children. In terms of dialogue, it rings true both between the children and strained conversation of the adults. The author is deft in capturing that sense of tightly controlled emotions in the parents’ characters and in the act of showing, not telling. The scene where Billy’s mother ‘wields the wooden spoon viciously round the edges of the bowl’ is a great example.
There is good pacing between chapters, and the build-up of tension is managed well. Beginning the chapters with news updates helps to orient the reader and reinforce the simultaneous narrative of what’s happening in Billy’s world and on the home front. The portrayal of family relationships is very well done and throws light on what attitudes and values were like in 1930s England – Billy’s mother greeting his father at the door and taking his briefcase; tense, sideways comments about jobs and money; and the sense of social and familial obligation. This and the war’s tension is offset by the humour that comes through when seeing it all through Billy’s five-year-old eyes. His misheard expressions – ‘jelly face’ for ‘angelic face’; ‘Nasties’ for ‘Nazis’ – add a warm comedic element. The pivotal scene where Billy and Angela find the Cossack sabre is very effective – it foreshadows the violence about to erupt in Europe and shows through Billy the human impulse of both the reverence for the weapon but also the temptation to use it impulsively.

Artist Vince Russo wants to advance his career but his devout mother, Diana, wants grandchildren. Vince lives in Niagara Falls, the Romance Capital of the World, and he doesn’t even date! Diana joins the Moms on Missions (“MOM”), who strive to better the lives of their clients’ kids. MOM installs Vince’s fantasy girl upstairs in the duplex where he lives. Their pick for Vince is sick of dancing to her mother’s tune, so she certainly won’t admit she finds her sensitive, playful neighbour sexy. However, she’d love to make him her pseudo-boyfriend to get MOM off her back. Will these young rebels come together organically, or is there no hope for their moms?

“Fuck you!” Drum Boy slams Mrs. P.'s door in his superintendent’s face. Vince stares open-mouthed at the door in front of him, then turns on the landing to find Paeng at the foot of the stairs, dressed for bed, with no glasses. Steaming, Vince tromps back down the stairs, in time to hear the drumming start again. “What a nerve this guy's got! Little shit.” Now Drum Boy is singing, too. Badly. Vince stops, wondering whether to turn around and march back up there to rattle his teeth. Instead, he stomps back into his unit, Paeng at his back, and calls Damon. “Vince, hey, how’s it hangin’?” Damon asks cheerfully. “Want to hit The Hill for a few beers? I’m dying to get out for a bit.” “No. Do you hear this?” Vince holds up his phone to the ceiling, hoping it picks up the noise. Boom boom chuck budda boom boom chuck budda “I don’t need a frickin’ girlfriend!” Boom boom chuck budda boom boom chuck . . . “My neighbour is an asshole!” “What is that?” Damon asks stupidly. “It's your new tenant,” Vince growls. “He drums twenty-four seven. I have explained this to you, Damon. Twice. The last time Paeng and I had two minutes’ peace was the day before he moved in. I am losing it, man. I’m going to go postal soon. If I do, you are going to have to explain why to our mothers, and you are going to have to comfort them both while I’m getting corn-holed in Kingston Pen for capping the little bastard, capisce?” “Whoa-ho-ho, there Vince! Did you say there's a guy living up there? It was supposed to be Mrs. Maggione’s friend Gloria’s daughter, Mary. She’s gor—” Damon checks himself, and Vince scowls. “Um, I mean uh . . . Trudy?” he calls to his wife. “Get me another beer!” Vince counts to ten. “Did Moms on Missions set this up?” There is silence for a couple beats. From Damon, not Drum Boy. The noise from above is as obnoxious as ever. Damon sighs. “Yeah, you know it. I didn't even meet the Chiclet.” “No, no, it’s a guy! And the name on the mailbox says D. Darren, not M. diGiordano. Why didn’t you come to check out the tenant?” “My mother wouldn't put a crackhead in there, ya know?” “And a drummer makes a better tenant because . . .”
Don’t be fooled by the seeming tranquility, Jess is scheming. There are a lot of characters in her head and all of them are yelling for attention.
She edits for professional authors and is always tutoring somebody. She got her start six years ago, in fan fiction, and is proud of it.
Four great kids, one husband *coughbiggestkidofallcough* and two dogs ensure that the house is always messy. The garden’s overflowing with blooms, but weedy. The grass always needs cutting, provided it’s not buried beneath snow. She lives in Canada, eh? The dogs are walked, the kids get fed, the hubbs hasn’t killed anybody yet, the books Jess reads she reviews, and somehow, the people in her head manage to make it into stories. Excerpt:

The light jumped and twirled, spinning until wisps formed the body of a large bird. Graceful ribbons of orange and yellow light laced together, taking the shape of wings and a trailing crown of feathers almost as vivid as the long red and gold tail.
Black eyes and a beak faced them before the bird took flight. It soared across the breeze and flew around the trees. Ethereal and shining, the bird plummeted through the leaves, shaking branches all the way down. Small birds squawked and fled their nests, disappearing into the dark.
The bird swooped low towards Jace's knees, knocking him back. It circled Jace, the delicate feathers of light sweeping across his cheeks, casting him in a soft red glow. Jace's gaze glimmered with awe as the bird shot towards the sky and winked out of existence. Small particles of light sprinkled the forest like pixie dust.
In the raining red and yellow light, Jace pulled Roan close by the collar and kissed him. There was nothing gentle in it, only raging passion.
Roan pulled Jace back by the waist and leaned against a tree, their ragged breaths deafening him. Maybe one day they'd have more. Maybe one day…
Leaves crunched. Whispers caught on the breeze. The air wafted, carrying the odour of sweat and chemical fumes.
Roan pushed Jace back. The hair on Roan's neck stood on end.
A dark figure launched towards them from the darkness. An unmarked metal canister hit the ground at Roan's feet.
Smoke burst forth, engulfing Roan's body.
"Hands behind your head," voices yelled, followed by clicks. "Hands up behind your head! Get on your knees!"
"Roan?" Jace called, grappling Roan's arms in the thick smoke. "What's going on?"
Roan hacked and gagged, swatting the smoke away. He couldn't see Jace—he couldn't even see his own feet through his irritated eyes.
"Roan!" Jace's fingernails dug into Roan's wrist as his grip slipped down Roan's forearms. "Don't let them take me!"
Jace's hands ripped away from Roan's arm.
"Get on your knees," voices commanded again. A sharp object rammed Roan's knee, bashing his kneecap.
Yelping, Roan fell. Through the dissipating smoke, soldiers in black uniforms and masks rushed at him, their assault rifles aimed at his head and heart. Military. The governtary. No!
He struggled to stand. Lunging forward, he struck at the blurred faces.
A rifle slammed down on his wrists before the butt of the gun smashed his jaw.
"Down on the ground, Ven," a soldier demanded, threatening to hit Roan again.
"Roan!" Jace screamed from behind them.
On instinct, Roan stared past the soldiers to the faint light from a headlamp. Even with burning retinas, he could see Jace in the hold of Kai and Vera, two sentries from Clan Teach. Moham's guards and friends. Kai's tall, broad body seized Jace by the waist while Vera's lithe form fought Jace's arms. They hauled Jace back, navigating towards the camp settlement.
"Jace." Roan stepped towards him. Gun muzzles jabbed him back.
Jace fought back, kicking Kai's shins and hitting Vera's face. "Let me go! I'm not the one they're attacking, you idiots. Go save him!" He raked Kai's arms and punched Vera's chest.
Kai smacked Jace in the neck, stunning Jace.
"Last time, lab elf. Hands. Head. Now!" The soldier in front of Roan jammed the gun to Roan's groin.
Groaning, Roan collapsed in surrender. Soldiers jerked his arms as they clamped cold metal cuffs over his injured wrists. They yanked him up and pushed him in the opposite direction of the settlement, his hands hanging limp in front of him.
"Don't let them take you," Jace hollered. "Don't leave me."
Roan spun on his heel. In the distance, barely visible in the light from Kai's helmet, Kai and Vera dragged Jace, hitting him as he continued to struggle. Jace wrenched one arm free, reaching for Roan with an open palm.
A strangled cry escaped Roan's throat. He reached towards Jace, clawing air.
Then darkness separated them completely.
