Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Vick's Vultures
By Scott Warren
Genre: Science Fiction
In the far future, alien technology captured by the Union Earth Privateers has fueled Earth’s tenuous expansion from a single planet to a handful of systems across the Orion Spur.

Victoria Marin, captain of the U.E. Condor, and her crew of Vultures have been running dry for months. In danger of losing her command and her credibility if she can’t locate fresh salvage, she locks onto the distress signal of an alien ship in hopes of valuable cargo. What she finds instead is First Prince Tavram, the heir apparent to one of the largest empires in known space. Tavram’s ship has been crippled after narrowly escaping an ambush and his would-be assassin is coming to finish the job.

The Vultures launch a high risk mission to rescue the prince and recover every last scrap of xenotech they can before the hunter catches up to his prey. But there are more dangers than notorious interstellar assassins when it comes to ferrying an alien prince across the stars, and Victoria must contend with dangerous alliances, old grudges, and even her own government if she means to bring her crew home alive. Whether she succeeds or fails, the consequences of her choices will affect the path of all humanity.

Nazi Saboteurs on the Bayou by Steven Burgauer Book Spotlight and Giveaway!

A dead German in a whorehouse bed.  A pair of bloated corpses floating in a Mississippi bayou.  A mysterious notebook filled with unknown codes and hand drawn maps.  Brave young Marines and Navajo code talkers landing in the Pacific.  A Mafia Don helping the Allies for revenge on the Fascists.  A secret meeting of U.S. marshals with a New Orleans crime boss.  A series of anagrams challenging the code-breaking talents of the brilliant minds at Bletchley Park.  A gathering of international intelligence officers onboard a ship in the western Mediterranean.  A Nazi plot to sabotage the production of Higgins landing craft without which Americans would never be able to land safely on a foreign beach.

SYNOPSIS — NAZI SABOTEURS ON THE BAYOU — Steven Burgauer

As the book opens, an old German (Heinrich Brock) is found dead by a prostitute (Kentucky Rose) in Mahogany Hall, a New Orleans whorehouse.  Sewn into the lining of the dead man’s vest is a notebook filled with hand-drawn maps and what appear to be notes about the comings and goings at military and other installations.  The prostitute and an associate (Hector) remove these articles with a view to later disposing of the body.

The next scene finds a pair of German conspirators fretting that their local contact (the dead German) is overdue.  We next meet the Mafia crime boss (Nico Carolla) who owns a string of whorehouses and who is soon drawn into the disposition of the corpse from the opening scene.  Here we learn some of the history of the Carolla crime family in New Orleans.

Next, we move to the Pacific and meet the grandson of the dead German from the opening scene.  PFC Russell Brock is a U.S. Marine currently being trained for the amphibious landings at Guadalcanal.

Then we meet Andrew Jackson Higgins at the helm of the single most important landing craft ever built, the Higgins Boat, the steel-ramped landing craft that brought American troops to Pacific islands and to Normandy.  In his colorful manner, Higgins is instructing a class of Coast Guard newbies on how to properly drive and operate his nearly indestructible boat.

Now we meet officials from the Navy’s Bureau of Ships who need Higgins to markedly increase the production of his boats.  Higgins faces shortages of materials, manpower, and factory space that present almost insurmountable challenges.  The Mafia bosses control much of the labor supply, and thus, accommodations must be made to placate the Carolla family.  The Carolla family also has Old World connections in Palermo and Algiers which are proving critical to the North African landings in sixty days.

We next witness the arrival of the Waffen-SS officers charged with sabotaging the Higgins Boat plant essential to the Allies’ success.  The loss of the intelligence gathered by the dead German at the start of the story is a setback to the commando team’s plans.  The operation is under the direct control of Heinrich Himmler, who the team now communicates with as to how next to proceed.  Now enter the code breakers at Bletchley Park who intercept the commando team’s messages.  We meet some of the talented code breakers at Bletchley, including one female mathematician through whose eyes we see inside Bletchley Park.

America has a fledging intelligence operation and is almost entirely dependent on British intelligence for intelligence gathering.  We now meet Martina Amerada, a Cuban woman with a high-level banking responsibility, including ties to British intelligence, and who is Nico Carolla’s mistress.  Martina moves money for the Carolla crime family and also provides diplomatic cover between the Palermo branch of the family and the planners of Operation Torch, the imminent invasion of North Africa.  We gain insight into those plans through the eyes of Ian Fleming whose 30 Assault Unit is responsible for dirty tricks all throughout the western Mediterranean.  We are also introduced to the Navajo code-talker program essential to securing Marine Corps messages in the Pacific theater.

In rapid succession, the German commando team searches for the lost notebook by visiting the whorehouses Brock has been known to frequent.  This search leads to the murder of Hector and later to retaliation by the Mafia against the German conspirators.  The battle results in the loss of half of the German commando team.  United States marshals are drawn into the story as bodies are discovered in the nearby bayous.  The Mafia is suspected in these crimes.  When the marshals confront Nico Carolla, the marshals are put on the trail of the commandos which leads to the death of the marshals.

While Bletchley Park is busy trying to crack the code imbedded in the Himmler messages, we move back to the Pacific where grandson PFC Russell Brock is involved in the bloody landings at Gavutu ahead of Guadalcanal.  The grandson is wounded and nearly dies at nearly the same moment that the single remaining commando attempts to demolish the largest Higgins Boat manufacturing facility in New Orleans, as well as the surrounding infrastructure.

By now, British intelligence has cracked Himmler’s code and Martina Amerada, our Cuban contact, has alerted both the Mafia and the Navy of the impending assault.  Nico Carolla prevents the plant from being destroyed and thus becomes the hero of the story.

In the closing chapters, Fleming’s 30AU infiltrates Italian naval headquarters at Sidi Ferruch the very night that Operation Torch gets underway and the Higgins boats prove their indispensability to the war effort.  PFC Brock recovers from his wounds in a naval hospital, soon to attend Higgins Boat Operators School to learn how to handle a landing craft.  Martina takes possession of all intelligence related to the German commandos so that the threat never becomes public knowledge.

Nazi Saboteurs on the Bayou intertwines historic persons, actual events and distant locales of World War II with a fast-moving fictional Nazi plot to disrupt the manufacture of Higgins boats, the remarkable landing craft that won the war for the Allies.  Spanning the globe from amphibious landings at Gavutu and Guadalcanal, to the Navajo code talker school near San Diego, to the exotic environs of New Orleans, to the secret world of Bletchley Park, England, to the Allied invasion of North Africa, this tautly written thriller, covering two weeks during the summer of 1942, combines a fully imagined cast of characters with the historically important figures of Andrew Jackson Higgins, Admiral John Godfrey of British Intelligence, Navajo code talker Chester Nez, Colonel “Wild Bill” Donovan of the OSS (later the CIA), Commander Ian Fleming of MI6, along with a Polish intelligence officer code-named “Rygor,” and Sylvestro “Silver Dollar Sam” Carolla, the crime boss of New Orleans.

A review of The Railguns of Luna from the prestigious SCIENCE FICTION CHRONICLE (June 2001):

Steven Burgauer writes old style science fiction in which heroes and villains are easily identified, the action is fast and furious, and the plot twists and turns uncontrollably.  His newest is the story of a crack team of military specialists who discover that the brilliant but warped Cassandra Mubarak is planning to use advanced scientific devices to seize control of the world.  To stop her, they must infiltrate her heavily guarded headquarters and rescue the fair maiden in distress.  This is action adventure written straightforwardly and not meant to be heavily literary or provide pithy commentary on the state of humanity.

TREASURED LEGACY
Quick Reads Book 6

Guest Post by Andrew Joyce, Author of Yellow Hair!

My name is Andrew Joyce and I write books for a living. Kathleen has been kind enough to allow me a little space on her blog to talk about my latest, Yellow Hair.
Yellow Hair documents the injustices done to the Sioux Nation from their first treaty with the United States in 1805 through Wounded Knee in 1890. Every death, murder, battle, and outrage depicted actually took place—from the first to the last. The historical figures that play a role in my story were real people and I used their real names. I conjured up my protagonist only to weave together the various events conveyed in my fact-based tale of fiction. Yellow Hair is an epic tale of adventure, family, love, and hate that spans most of the 19th century. It is American history.

The inspiration for the book came to me when I was reading a short article and it made reference to the Great Sioux Uprising of 1862. It also mentioned that the outcome involved the largest mass execution in the history of the United States. That piqued my interest.

When I started my research into the incident, one thing led to another and before I knew it, I was documenting the entire history of the Sioux, who are also known as the Dakota, vis-à-vis the relationship between them and the United States.

Because the book exists only because I read the phrase, “the largest mass execution in the history of the United States,” I’ll tell you a little about that. What follows is an extremely abbreviated version of events.

The Dakota signed their first treaty with the United States in 1805 when they sold a small portion of their land to the Americans for the purpose of building forts. It was right after the Louisiana Purchase and President Jefferson wanted a presence in the West. At the time, “the West” was anything on the western side of the Mississippi River.

In the treaty of 1805, the Dakota sold 100,000 acres to the Americans. The agreed-upon price was $2.00 per acre. But when the treaty came up before the Senate for ratification, the amount was changed to two cents per acre. That was to be a precursor for all future treaties with the Americans. There were subsequent treaties in 1815, 1825, 1832, 1837, and 1851, and basically the same thing happened with all those treaties.

In 1837, the Americans wanted an additional five million acres of Dakota land. Knowing it would be a hard sell after the way they failed to live up to the letter or spirit of the previous treaties, the government brought twenty-six Dakota chiefs to Washington to show them the might and majesty that was The United States of America.

The government proposed paying one million dollars for the acreage in installments over a twenty-year period. Part of the payment was to be in the form of farm equipment, medicine, and livestock. Intimidated, the Indians signed the treaty and went home. The United States immediately laid claim to the lands—the first payment did not arrive for a year.

The significance of the 1837 treaty lies in the fact that it was the first time “traders” were allowed to lay claim to the Indians’ payments without any proof that money was owed . . . and without consulting the Indians. Monies were subtracted from the imbursements and paid directly to the traders.

By 1851, the Americans wanted to purchase all of the Dakota’s remaining lands—twenty-five million acres. The Sioux did not want to sell, but were forced to do so with threats that the army could be sent in to take the land from them at the point of a gun if they refused the American’s offer.

“If we sell our land, where will we live?” asked the Dakota chief.

“We will set aside land for the Dakota only. It is called a reservation and it will be along both banks of the Minnesota River, twenty miles wide, ten on each side and seventy miles long. It will be yours until the grasses no longer grow,” answered the Commissioner of Indian Affairs.

The Dakota were offered six cents an acre for land that was worth at least a dollar an acre. The payment would be stretched out over a twenty year period and was to be made in the form of gold coins. One year later, in 1852, the Americans took half the reservation, the seventy miles on the north side of the river. The Dakota were now reduced from a nation of fierce, independent people to a people dependent on hand-outs from the ones who stole not only their land, but also their dignity.

The Dakota were forced to buy their food from the traders who ran trading posts at the Indian Agency the U.S. Government had set up on the reservation. All year long the Dakota would charge what they needed. When the yearly payment for their land arrived, the traders would take what they said was owed them. Subsequently, there was very little gold left for the Dakota.

By 1862, the Dakota were starving. That year’s payment was months late in arriving because of the Civil War. The traders were afraid that because of the war there would be no payment that year and cut off the Dakota’s credit. The Indian Agent had the power to force the traders to release some of the food stocks, but refused when asked to do so by the Dakota.

After they had eaten their ponies and dogs, and their babies cried out in the night from hunger, the Dakota went to war against the United States of America.

They attacked the agency first and liberated the food stock from the warehouse, killing many white people who lived there. Then bands of braves set out to loot the farms in the surrounding countryside.

Many whites were killed in the ensuing weeks. However, not all of the Dakota went to war. Many stayed on the reservation and did not pick up arms against their white neighbors. Some saved the lives of white settlers. Still, over 700 hundred whites lost their lives before the rebellion was put down.

When the dust settled, all of the Dakota—including women and children, and those people who had saved settlers’ lives—were made prisoners of war.

Three hundred and ninety-six men were singled out to stand trial before a military commission. They were each tried separately in trials that lasted only minutes. In the end, three hundred and three men were sentenced to death.

Even though he was occupied with the war, President Lincoln got involved. He reviewed all three hundred and three cases and pardoned all but thirty-eight of the prisoners.

On a gray and overcast December morning in 1862, the scaffold stood high. Thirty-eight nooses hung from its crossbeams. The mechanism for springing the thirty-eight trap doors had been tested and retested until it worked perfectly. At exactly noon, a signal was given, a lever pulled, and the largest mass execution to ever take place in the United States of America became part of our history.

Meet the Author:

Born and raised in England, I now call South Carolina home where I  live with my wonderfully supportive husband, awesome son, and the most discerning canine critique group ever - if tails aren’t wagging then the story isn’t working!

I owe my love of literature to my mother, who, after catching me  reading by flashlight beneath the bed covers, calmly replaced the romance book I’d ‘borrowed’ with one that was far less risqué, and much more appropriate for a pre-teen! She encouraged me to include a wide variety of genres in my reading tastes, but romance, and  paranormal romance in particular, has remained my first love.

I never really thought about writing a romance novel until I read one that was so bad I can only assume it got published by mistake! Making such a comment to my BFF, Sharon, she challenged me to do better. The result was a 250-thousand word epic that I affectionately refer to as my ‘bodice-ripper’ romance - and yes, I still have it!

When I’m not writing I can be found in my kitchen. I love baking, and my husband will actually admit his love of Christmas fruitcake. (Personally I think all that brandy in the fruit has something to do with it!) If not baking then I’m working on my latest tapestry project or  playing catch-up with my reading list where I always seem to be at least three books behind!

It’s a crazy-good life, and I wouldn’t change it for anything, although I wouldn‘t object if I came up with the winning lottery numbers!
