Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Gilding the Lily by Justine John Book Spotlight!

Gilding The Lily

A gripping mystery of jealousy, murder and lies.

An invitation to her estranged, wealthy father’s surprise 75th birthday party in New York sees Amelia and her husband, Jack, set off across the pond to meet a whole new world of family politics.

Amelia, now a successful businesswoman, feels guilty about never liking her father’s women, so does her upmost to give his new socialite partner, Evelyn, the benefit of the doubt. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could just all get along? But there’s something very dark, determined and dangerous about her

When Amelia’s father, Roger, becomes ill, Jack grows suspicious that there is more to it. Amelia understands why, but no one else will believe them. They travel back to America to piece together the puzzle, but when Roger goes missing, the couple are driven to their wits' end. It takes a DEA officer and a secret assassin to bring them answers, but the ruthless truth is something no one expected

About Justine John
After over thirty years of working in the corporate sector in London Justine John left the rat
race for the stunning countryside of the Surrey Hills where she lives with her husband, horses and two dalmatians.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT
Amelia tries to like her father’s new partner, but their relationship quickly becomes unbearable.  When her father becomes gravely ill, she and her husband are driven to extreme measures.   The novel is narrated by Amelia (in the first person) and Jack (in the third person.)

The novel opens with a prologue describing someone’s funeral from a female guest’s point of view, but the reader is not told who the guest is, or who is being buried.
Amelia and Jack Jones are a happily married couple living in London who both run their own businesses.  Amelia cares deeply for her father, Roger Kavanagh, but he divorced her mother in the 1970s and moved to New York so she doesn’t see him as often as she’d like.  Amelia and Jack travel to New York for a surprise 75th birthday party held for Roger, by his new partner Evelyn DeGrawe.  At the party they meet Laura DeGrawe (Evelyn’s step-granddaughter) and she and Amelia become friends. The party is a disaster, being totally inappropriate for Roger, and he reacts rudely.
After his divorce years ago, Roger married another woman, Helen.  Young Amelia never accepted Helen, which had a negative impact on her relationship with her father.  Helen was killed in a car accident and Amelia feels guilty about having not made the effort with her.  She promises herself to accept any other woman her father chooses in the future, no matter what.  When Evelyn arrives on the scene, Amelia makes a huge effort to get to know her, despite the new woman’s grating personality. At first, Evelyn appears to be an eccentric, but harmless American socialite, but it soon becomes clear she is more toxic than strange.
Eventually, Amelia’s father becomes seriously ill and Amelia and Jack believe that Evelyn could be poisoning him, given her increasingly bizarre behaviour.  They go as far as revealing their worry to Roger, but he is horrified and disassociates himself from them.  Jack and Amelia appeal to some friends of Roger’s for help, but the circumstances are so bizarre, they don’t believe them either.  Stressed by money worries, the couple are at their wits’ end.
When Roger’s health deteriorates, Evelyn is at her most delusional.  She lies to hospital staff about being married to him and things begin to spiral out of control.
In the meantime, Jack (an ex police officer who specialised in narcotics), secretly contacts one of his old informers, Bill Skilling, who is willing to be paid to ‘solve’ the problem of Evelyn.  As he spies on her apartment from the building opposite, he sees something happen that lets him of the hook and he seemingly disappears.

In the epilogue, it becomes clear whose funeral in the prologue focuses on, and explains the outcome of the story in a shocking revelation that hopefully no one will have thought of.

Ghosts and Shadows by H.Max Hiller Book Spotlight!

The "Cadillac" Holland Mysteries are a compelling mix of mystery, political thriller, and travelogue of one of America's favorite destinations seen through the eyes of a detective as battered as the city he patrols. Detective Holland has come home as a retired Special Forces and Intelligence operative and brings those specialized skills to bear on investigations that all too often place him squarely at odds with NOPD and the FBI's own way of doing things. It's why the Chief of Detectives only assigns "Cadillac" cases which are as unique and challenging as the detective's way of seeking justice and not just answers. Ghosts and Shadows will test the oath Detective Cooter “Cadillac” Holland swore to defend his home against foreign and domestic enemies when evil men from both sides of the border start a war on the eve of Mardi Gras, an election, and the first Super Bowl in Saints’ history. A shadowy operation has resurrected the blueprints for the classified operation that nearly got Detective Holland killed in Iraq now threatens to expose his own role in that disavowed mission. When the safety of Cooter’s friends and family is also put at risk, he is forced to call upon the skills and mind-set he had hoped to retire in order to keep the peace between local heroin dealers and a violent Mexican drug cartel, outsmart a defense contractor, and take on a loose-cannon Federal official willing to set a bloodbath in motion to cover the tracks of a deal gone bad.

H. Max Hiller’s relationship with New Orleans began with a job cooking in a cafe on Bourbon Street at the age of seventeen.  He uses characters and anecdotes from his four-decades working at many of New Orleans’ iconic music and dining destinations to bring depth and realism to his writing. Though he no longer resides in New Orleans full time, he keeps to the expat creed to “Be a New Orleanian wherever you are.” Max’s life is now divided between working as a chef on a boat traveling the inland waterways and the Victorian-era home he shares with his wife and a collection of rescue pets, which include a neurotic wolfhound/terrier mix and too many cats.

@brendamargriet No Life But This by Brenda Margriet Book Spotlight!

Abigail Garsson feels trapped in her safe, boring, conventional life. Desperate to escape, she signs up for an adventure vacation on the Portuguese island of São Miguel.
Santos Carregado enjoys introducing tourists to his tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic. At first he barely notices the unassuming Abigail. He soon finds her meek exterior hides a vibrant woman who teases his senses and ignites his passion.
Abigail is stunned to discover the handsome, confident Santos is attracted to her, but his fiery kisses and searing caresses convince her to accept a sensuous invitation.
Will the realities of life shatter Abigail's holiday daydream? Or can the shifting sands of a short-term fling become the rock on which a life-long relationship is built?

Her fingers bumped gently across the globe. The surface was irregular, as if it truly was a miniature world―Everest shrunk to the height of a fingernail, the waves of the oceans smoothed to an infinitesimal roughness. Its high gloss finish glared where the light from the floor lamp struck it.
"Abigail?" Martin’s shoes clicked briskly across the hardwood floor.
"Your guests are wondering where you are." She kept her gaze on the globe. Guests? It was her mother’s funeral, for God’s sake, not a party. She wondered vaguely who had thought to put a globe in the serenity room of a funeral parlour.

"We’re already behind schedule." His voice was firm, no-nonsense. Usually his confident control made her feel safe. Today, it grated down her spine like claws on a granite cliff.
"It’s time you took your seat." She gripped the globe with the tips of her fingers and gave it a whirl. She couldn't blame her dizziness on the blurring world before her. The last few days she'd been lightheaded, disconnected, out of touch. Not that anyone would have noticed. She'd been careful to act her normal sedate, organized, earnest self. But inside she was screaming. Screaming so hard she couldn't hear herself think.
 "Abigail."
Impatience coloured Martin's voice. She turned her head. He stood at her shoulder, his well-cut, dark grey suit masking a desk-job belly, appropriately sober tie, his thinning blond hair brushed straight back from a high forehead.
"In a minute. I need another minute.
" What a lie. She needed more than a minute. She needed…she wasn’t sure. But she knew she had to figure it out. And soon.
"I’ve always wanted to travel. Just once, somewhere exotic, unusual." She swallowed a sob, guilt and grief rolling together.

"But I couldn’t leave Mom. She hated being alone." It had been more than a simple preference. It had been an illness, one her mother had struggled with for years. Abigail closed her eyes and stopped the globe with a finger. Squinting through her lashes, she was disappointed to see her finger well below the tip of Greenland, lost in the nothingness of the Atlantic. She spun the globe again.

"Tobias is out there alone. He needs you." She hunched her shoulders, the stiff taffeta collar of her black dress scratching her neck. Martin knew her weakness. She’d do anything for her younger brother.
"Tell him I’m coming." The coloured sphere revolved on its tilted axis, too fast for her eyes to follow.
 "In one minute."
"Fine."
Martin’s disapproving huff fanned her cheek.
"One minute, Abigail, and that’s all."
His footsteps faded away.
The globe circled, slower and slower.
She closed her eyes once more, held out her finger.
Taking a deep breath, she pushed forward, and stopped it.
When she opened her eyes, her shoulders slumped in despair.
Again she'd stopped the spin in the middle of the Atlantic.
She'd been looking for a sign, and she had it. She was going nowhere. Tiny printing on the shiny surface caught her eye and she leaned forward. There, right next to her neatly rounded fingernail with its modest clear coat of polish, was the word "Azores" surrounded by small black blobs.
She paused, considering the nine tiny specs in the vast blueness, then straightened her shoulders and headed for the door. There'd be time to think in the weeks ahead. Too much time. Right now, she had to go to her mother's funeral.

Her heroines are bold, savvy and determined to accept nothing less than the man they deserve. @TompkinsFalls Planted by C.T Collier Promo Blitz!

Cozy Mystery
Date Published: June 2016
Publisher: Asdee Press

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

It’s Monday of spring break when Professor Lyssa Pennington’s backyard garden project unearths a loaded revolver. With no record of violence at their address and no related cold case, the Tompkins Falls police have no interest. But the Penningtons and a friend with the State Police believe there’s a body somewhere. Whose? Where? And who pulled the trigger?

Excerpt

Lyssa sobbed and punched her pillow and finally fell deeply asleep.

Sometime after midnight, a hand rose from the hole in the center of the garden, found her in the guest room, and grabbed her by the throat.

She bolted upright and sucked air with noisy gasps. Stroking her throat, she scanned every corner of the room. She was alone.

White window curtains fluttered as the heat came on. She studied the lacy pattern traced on the linen panels by the streetlamp as it shone through the branches of a tree.

Her breathing eased, and her hand slid instinctively lower, to her breastbone, where she massaged with soothing pressure. Her newfound calm brought awareness. She wasn’t alone.

Death was in the room with her.

The Kingmaker by Gemma Perfect Book Blitz!

The Kingmaker
Gemma Perfect
(The Kingmaker Trilogy, #1)
Publication date: January 1st 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
“I am sixteen years old and I will die on the morning of my seventeenth birthday. As tradition dictates, I will be sacrificed and my life’s blood will determine which one of my two brothers will be King. My blood will kill one and crown one. My name is Everleigh and I am the Kingmaker.”
The legend of the Kingmaker goes back millions of years. Their magic chooses the rightful King of the Realm and they all die on their seventeenth birthday.
Except this one.
Everleigh is special.
She is the Kingmaker who will live, the Kingmaker who will rule, the Kingmaker who will be Queen.
But not everyone agrees with an age old prophecy that says that a girl will rule the Realm and soon Everleigh is locked in a deadly battle for the throne.
EXCERPT:
Halfreda
I have been sleeping so much more than normal. I believe the dreams are sending me messages. I have such a strong feeling about this one – stronger than I have ever had before; I think she might be the one.
I know what people think when they look at me, half of them revere me and half of them fear me.
I admit I exaggerate my persona but never ever my powers. My powers are real. I know things and I see things. I see things that haven’t happened yet but will happen. I know a person’s heart – I can see greatness and badness, trust or ill will. I know if someone is cursed before they tell me. I know if a woman is with child before she does. I know the private thoughts of people. Some people. Not everyone – some people are good at hiding their true self, blocking off the signals I pick up, but for the most part I can.
My persona is something else. I do have a little fun with the chanting – not all of which is strictly necessary. I enjoy staring at someone and then letting my eyes roll back in my head as if I have been overcome with some secret thing to do with them – that trick gets everyone in a fluster.
But I’m a good woman and a useful one. I do help the King. I use my powers to advise him. I use my knowledge to guide him and I have never shown him wrong. The Realm is peaceful and prosperous and I know that I have helped with that.
But my real purpose, the reason my teacher placed me here at the castle, has eluded me thus far. Through no fault of my own, I must add.
So, the blessing is over and here I am making up a future fire to see what I can see.
I’ve gathered the wood and started the fire, the flames licking upwards and warming my room. I’ve put all the necessary ingredients in to my bowl over the fire. The liquid is swirling. I’m trying to see if my hunch is correct. If I’m right about Everleigh.
Ah, I’m fed up of this puzzle. The fire will not show me anything, but does that mean I am wrong or that the future is too uncertain?
Where is my knowledge now?
Every time a Kingmaker comes to this final countdown in their life I intervene. Everleigh is the seventh Kingmaker I have known. That may give you an idea of my age I know, and yes, I am older than anyone I have ever met.
The teacher told me I will live until my life’s purpose is completed and my life’s purpose is to find the Kingmaker who is not the Kingmaker.
Does that even make sense?
When I met my teacher, I was only a teenager. I was rebelling against my power and trying to drown out my knowledge and gift with drink. Alcohol dulled the power and the voices inside me.
My teacher helped me, guided me and allowed me to live with my power, enjoying the help it gave me and embracing it fully. He also told me that I had been chosen for a special and important purpose.
He asked me if I had heard of the Kingmaker. Of course, I had – everyone had. The Kingmaker was a sacred tradition used to choose the new King of the Realm.
The teacher had been privy to a prophecy found years ago, which told of the one Kingmaker who would not die, she instead would rule as the Queen and the greatest ruler that the Realm had ever known.
I was to learn my craft and then go to the castle and work as a wise woman to assist the King. But every time the Kingmaker feast came around, I was to secretly meet the Kingmaker and test if she was the future Queen.
I have a feeling with this one that I’ve never had before. I’m more excited than I’ve been previously to test her. I’m nervous too. The one thing the teacher never told me was what happened next. If I found the Kingmaker who should be Queen, how did I convince anyone else?
My fire has let me down. I leave it to die and decide to finish for the night. After all, if she does as I’ve asked, I will meet Everleigh at the river at sunrise, which isn’t that far away.
I lay in my bed, watching the embers of the fire flicker away, and as I do I see a crown forming in the smoke. Is it a trick of my imagination or is it a sign?
I drift off to sleep pondering.
