Excerpt #1

He had never needed a woman more than he needed one right then. He didn’t care what she looked like, how old she was, or if she found him attractive.

His body throbbed with pain and blood lust. He leaned against the cool wall of the dressing room and closed his eyes. He needed a woman before the pain settled into him and rendered him useless.

“Igor?”

He lifted his bloody, bruised limbs from the wall and turned.

Maryruth stood a few feet from him. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail, the bright lights overhead made her look pale. Or maybe she was pale because all the blood had drained from her face.

“What are you doing here?” he rasped. His gaze left her eyes to drag down her body. She wore a pair of dark jeans, flats, a peacoat. Completely out of place in a sinner’s den.

He wanted to drag his tongue along the column of her throat, taste her skin, mar it with his blood. The primitive picture took hold of him until he was reaching for her. He forced his hands down.

“Get out,” he gritted.

“You’re hurt.”

“Da.”

“Let me help you.” Her eyes widened as she pled.

“You’ll hurt too, if you stay.”

She took a step closer. “You need me.”

He didn’t correct her.

“You need me the way a man needs a woman.” Her eyes dropped to the bulge in his shorts. “So take me.”

Excerpt #2

“I’ve never done anything the way other people do,” he said. “I’ve always been different that way. I spent years fighting, trying to be something I wasn’t. You know what I learned? Who cares? People judge. Fuck them. You get one life. How are you going to live it?”

They faced one another, their breaths mingling, a shaft of moonlight giving them just enough light to see outlines and curves.

Maryruth rolled on top of him and stripped off her shirt. Leaning over, she grazed her lips against his. “Show me how to live, Igor.”

Margaret George is a rolling stone who has lived in many places, beginning her traveling at the age of four when her father joined the U.S. diplomatic service and was posted to a consulate in Taiwan. The family traveled on a freighter named after Ulysses' son Telemachus that took thirty days to reach Taiwan, where they spent two years. Following that they lived in Tel Aviv (right after the 1948 war, when it was relatively quiet), Bonn and Berlin (during the spy-and-Cold-War days) before returning--at the height of Elvis-mania--to Washington DC, where Margaret went to high school. Margaret's first piece of published writing, at the age of thirteen, was a letter to TIME Magazine defending Elvis against his detractors. (Margaret has since been to Graceland.)

But it was earlier in Israel that Margaret, an avid reader, began writing novels to amuse herself when she ran out of books to read. Interestingly, the subject of these was not what lay around her in the Middle East, but the American west, which she had never set foot in. (Now that she lives in the American Midwest she writes about the Middle East!) Clearly writing in her case followed Emily Dickinson's observation "There is no frigate like a book" and she used it to go to faraway places. Now she has added another dimension to that travel by specializing in visiting times remote from herself.

Neither of these horse sagas got published, but the ten-year-old author received an encouraging note from an editor at Grosset & Dunlap, telling her she had a budding talent but should work on her spelling.

It was also in Israel that Margaret started keeping land tortoises as pets, an interest which she still follows today. She had a great affinity for animals and nature and that led her to a double major at Tufts University in English literature and biology. Following that she received an MA in ecology from Stanford University--one of the earliest departments to offer such a concentration. Today she is active in environmental and animal conservation groups.

Combining her interests led her to a position as a science writer at the National Cancer Institute (National Institutes of Health) in Bethesda, Maryland for four years.

Her marriage at the end of that time meant moving, first to St. Louis, then to Uppsala, Sweden, and then to Madison, Wisconsin, where she and her husband Paul have lived for more than twenty years now. They have one grown daughter who lives in California and is in graduate school.

Through all this Margaret continued to write, albeit slowly and always on only one project at a time. She wrote what she refers to as her 'Ayn Rand/adventure novel' in college and her 'Sex and the City' novel in Washington DC. It was in St. Louis that she suddenly got the idea of writing a 'psycho-biography' of Henry VIII. She had never seen such a thing done but became convinced the king was a victim of bad PR and she should rescue his good name. Her background in science meant that only after thoroughly researching the literature and scholarship on Henry VIII would she embark on the novel itself. She sought the guidance of a Tudor historian at Washington University for a reading list, and proceeded from there.

It was actually fourteen years between her initial idea and the publication of The Autobiography of Henry VIII. The book made an impression for several reasons: first, because no one had ever written a novel sympathetic to the king before; second, because it covered his entire life from before birth until after his death, making it almost a thousand pages long, and third, because it was so fact-filled.

Jordan Fineman needs a break. His second year of college has almost done him in. His solution is to take off for a summer of work and adventure in Alaska. All the while mental illness is setting in. A summer to remember. A tale to grow on.

The story begins with Jordan alone in the great research library of Cornell University dreaming about traveling to far off places.  Call it craziness, but that is exactly what he does.  Without any guarantee of employment, he boards a plane for Anchorage, Alaska and spends the next eight weeks on his own, working hard, making money, meeting fellow travelers from all around the world, and seeing some of the country’s finest scenery.

Had this been all, it would have been a summer to remember. His adventures however, are undertaken with a shadow cast from far above.  Jordan Fineman is both bi-polar and a severe obsessive compulsive.  In two years’ time, he will become incapacitated.  The story is written with that knowledge in mind.

As it stands however, Full of Wonderment: a novel, is an adventure story that lays out the possibility of spending a college summer without an eye on the professional resume - a summer for personal growth, alternative education and fun.

Josh Greenfield is a graduate of both Phillips Andover Academy and Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds two masters degrees from the City University of New York, one in History and one in English Literature. He also completed the better part of a doctorate in English at Fordham University. His desire in writing is to tell an entertaining and engaging story, to look for laughs in dark places.

Q&A with author

Tell us about your genre.  How did you come to choose it?  Why does it appeal to you?  

“Full of Wonderment: a novel” is a story suitable for young adults.  It is about a guy passing out of his teenage years and the adventure he has one summer.  That is why I classify it in this genre.  Other stories I’ve written about older characters going through more mature experiences I would not classify in this way.  I also feel that the language I’ve chosen for this book, which is simple and highly colloquial is suitable for younger readers.

What do you find most challenging about the writing process, and how do you deal with it?

For me, writing is all about spontaneity.  I wake up in the morning and follow the exact same routine in preparing my breakfast and sitting down to write.  If all goes well, something comes out.  If my intuition fails me, which thank God had not happened in a long time, I can only assume I’m not living right.

When and where do you do your writing?

As I said above I write each morning right after breakfast. I sit at my desk which faces east from six stories up and most mornings if the sky is clear I see some portion of the sun rise.

What have you learned about promoting your books?

For one thing, I’m trying to develop a bit more of a thick skin, to take the bad with the good.  At readings, I’ve learned the many people are appreciative of open discussion of mental illness.

What are you most proud of as a writer?

That one isn’t hard.  I’m proud of putting mental illness out in the open, front and center, with honesty and a sense of humor.

If you could have dinner with any writer, living or dead, who would it be and what would you talk about?

I would have to say J.D. Salinger.  I guess I would like to work around to why he pulled back so dramatically after his success. If there might have been some other way he could have worked that out.
