Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Ellison Russell wanted a decorator, not a corpse. Too bad she finds Mrs. White in the study killed with a revolver. Things go from bad to worse when she finds Mr. White in the dining room killed with a candlestick. With so many bodies, is it any wonder Detective Anarchy Jones’ new partner considers Ellison a suspect?
With the country club gossips talking a mile a minute, an unexpected cocktail party, a visit from Aunt Sis, and a romantic decision, Ellison hardly has time to think about murder. Unfortunately, the killer has plenty of time to think about her.

About The Author

- Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders. She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean--and she's got an active imagination. Forests of the Fae: The Raven Queen
By K. Kibbee
Genre: YA Fantasy

A summer spent untangling a century-old mass disappearance, communing with ghosts, fleeing dark Fae Folk, and enduring her nefarious cousin Lexie would seem like tribulation enough for 13-year-old Anne, and yet her struggles have only just begun.

Though she’s closed Devlin’s Door behind her, something sinister has followed Anne from the other side. Her dearest friend Grace is not as she would seem. Something dark has taken hold of the girl . . . something not of this world. Ravens surround her, people mindlessly do her bidding, and wickedness drips from her lips. It’s only a matter of time before Anne uncovers her secret and with it, her vengeance.

Meanwhile, somewhere deep in the Forests of the Fae, the real Grace struggles to retain her humanity and escape the revolting Faerie body that imprisons her. With pet raven Onyx at her side, she is heralded a Queen, and worshiped by the very creatures that she despises.  Set atop a throne of thorns, she feels all is lost, until a stranger with human eyes and a sorted past is shackled at her feet.

Though worlds apart, both girls must race against time if they hope to unravel the mysteries of the Fae folk and unmask The Raven Queen.

Q&A from the author!Tell us about your genre.  How did you come to choose it?  Why does it appeal to you?
Well, it seems a little pompous to call it my genre, but the ‘Forests of the Fae’ series would probably be best fit into the YA fantasy genre. I’ve always been drawn to all things fantastical, so it’s a natural fit for me. I simply adore writing about wondrous worlds and magical places. My brain is a cornucopia of oddities, and it’s almost a relief to let some of them escape every now and again.
What do you find most challenging about the writing process, and how do you deal with it?
It’s an adage that’s been repeated by many writers but I echo it with complete sincerity—the hardest part about writing is . . . well . . . writing. Just breaking away from the daily hubbub of life and convincing oneself to sit down and put pen to page (or, these days, fingertips to keyboard) can be a genuine challenge. It’s so easy to get into the tomorrow, tomorrow, I’ll do it tomorrow refrain and before you know it, tomorrow is never.
When and where do you do your writing?
I can write in a car. I can write in a bar. I can write on the subway. I can write any which-way! So long as I have a good set of ear plugs—just add coffee and a laptop, and I’m good to go!
What have you learned about promoting your books?
I can’t recall when or where it was that I read it—but when I came across the statistic that being a successful author is something like 20% writing and 80% marketing, I was aghast. Unfortunately, my writerly travels have proven just that. There are SO many amazing, talented writers out there who are vying for the same prize that you’ve really got to hustle to make your work seen. Now don’t get me wrong . . . if it’s drivel, all the marketing in the world won’t save it. It’s got to be good. VERY good. But even VERY good work needs aggressive promotion or it’s liable to end up in mothballs.
What are you most proud of as a writer?
Oddly enough, I’d say that I’m most proud of my battle scars. In my youth I often lamented my lack of success. I wanted to be that fresh-faced 18-year-old who ended up on the NYT Bestseller list with her debut novel. I went through a fair share of pouting when that didn’t happen. Then I pouted even harder when I realized that even a nod from a small, indie publisher probably wouldn’t come to pass. But after all that pouting and self-loathing, I pulled on my big girl panties and got to work. If it’s in you—this writer’s soul---it won’t be silenced easily. It may whine and fuss and make a dramatic spectacle of itself, but in the end, it will keep you going. And when you keep going and GOING and GOING, eventually you come out the other side a more seasoned and accomplished writer—with some pretty impressive scars to show for your travels.
If you could have dinner with any writer, living or dead, who would it be and what would you talk about?
I’m probably the umpteenth writer to drop this name but I’d be fibbing if I gave a different one . . . so . . .  J.K. Rowling. That gal just impresses the heck out of me and the altruistic acts she’s performed by benefit of her success are beyond admirable. She’s talented, witty, diligent, and one smart cookie. I’ll always take cookies for dinner. ;)
As to topics of conversation . . . c’mon—it’s J.K. Rowling. You talk about whatever she wants to talk about!

Grimm Woods by D. Melhoff Book Tour and Review!

Grimm Woods by D. Melhoff

Book Details:

Genre: Thriller

Publication Date: December 2016
Number of Pages: 384
ISBN: 0992133130 (ISBN13: 9780992133139)

Synopsis:

A remote summer camp becomes a lurid crime scene when the bodies of two teenagers are found in a bloody, real-life rendering of a classic Grimm’s fairy tale. Trapped in the wilderness, the remaining counsellors must follow a trail of dark children’s fables in order to outwit a psychopath and save the dwindling survivors before falling prey to their own gruesome endings.
Drawing on the grisly, uncensored details of history’s most famous fairy tales, Grimm Woods is a heart-pounding thriller about a deranged killer who uses traditional children’s stories as tropes in elaborate murders. Set against the backdrop of modern-day Michigan, it’s a journey through the mind of a dangerous zealot and a shocking glimpse into the bedtime stories you thought you knew.

Read an excerpt:
July 7th, 5:44 a.m.
One hacksaw. One hammer, six boxes of nails. Twelve Mason jars, four hunting knives, two pairs of handcuffs. Fifteen gallons of gasoline divided evenly among three dented jerry cans.
It’s time.
A work glove hovered over the table where the objects were laid out side by side and began ticking the air as though marking off an invisible checklist. The chamber reeked of mildew, and the walls had no windows or electrical sockets—no lamps, no wires, no switch covers. A single red candle provided the only light, its crimson wax dripping down its shaft like blood.
The hand picked up a piece of paper from the table and slipped it into a blank envelope. Below, a beetle scuttled across the floorboards. The insect—its gangly antennae tuned to some foul frequency in the gloom—raced past the sole of a giant boot just as a drop of liquid fell through the air and struck it dead center, engulfing its body in a hot, gelatinous blob that filled its orifices and burned it from the inside out. Another droplet tumbled from the candle, plopping onto the envelope this time, and then a brass stamp came down and pressed the wax into a hardened seal.
Drawing in heavier, raspier breaths, the figure held the envelope up to a corkboard that was bolted to the wall. More than a dozen pictures of young men and women were tacked to the panel by their throats and foreheads, smiling in the shadows.
The figure pinned the envelope to the board and stepped back to take in the room again.
The table and the switchblade.
The book of matches.
The iron rods, the hatchet, the .22 Smith & Wesson.
The smiling faces.
Now, the figure mused, watching the photographs flicker in the bloodred light. Who’s the nicest, Who’s the worst, who wants to hear a story first?

While most of his stories are for adults, he also enjoys terrifying younger audiences from time to time, as seen in his series of twisted picture books for children.  My Review

Grimm Woods started out pretty benign, a busload of kids and counselors on their way for a week at Camp Crownheart in the Michigan woods. Scott Mamer, a guy who needs a job, decides to take this one for the summer. Pretty easy gig for him he thinks. He meets the owner of the camp, Charlotte and the maintenance guy, Bruce along with the other counselors. The counselors all have their issues and reasons for wanting to be at the camp, some have been working at the camp for years. The kids are your typical camp goers, rich kids, underprivileged kids sent for some learning and fun activities.

We learn about Scott and his past and about a little girl named Desiree and what happened to her. The first night at camp there is a get together with all of the counselors at the lake. There is alcohol, drugs and sex which kind of surprises Scott, but he joins in. The first night, two of the counselors go missing and are found dead. That starts the murder spree that continues through the next few days and what a spree it is.

I found that the book started out a little slow, but I think that was to set the scene and timbre of the story. Then it took off and I had a hard time putting the book down. I have not read a horror story in a long time and this is definitely a readable story. Makes me glad that I never went to summer camp! The writing was easy to read and I came to really feel for the characters and I usually figure out who the bad guy is but I was not able to until the author lets the reader know. I really enjoyed the book!

My review is voluntary.

The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand Book Review!

From New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand, a summertime story about identical twins who couldn't be any less alike.

Nantucket is only two and a half hours away from Martha's Vineyard by ferry. But the two islands might as well be worlds apart for a set of identical twin sisters who have been at odds for years. Just because twins look exactly the same doesn't mean they're anything alike--and Tabitha and Harper Frost have spent their whole lives trying to prove this point. When a family crisis forces them to band together--or at least appear to--the twins come to realize that the special bond that they share is more important than the resentments that have driven them apart. A story of new loves, old battles, and a threat that gives a whole new meaning to the term sibling rivalry, THE IDENTICALS is Elin Hilderbrand at her page-turning best.

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her five previous novels. Hilderbrand is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa.

When it comes to special bonds, there is nothing like that between sisters.  There are times when you love her and don't know how you would live without her, but there are times when you want nothing to do with her and you feel like there isn't enough distance.  But the bond is unshakable.  You would go to the ends of the earth for her.

Sisters can be maddening, but the love shared is unlike any other.

Having grown up with four sisters (yes, four!) - two of whom I physically lived with, I can speak from experience.  My closest sister, my Irish Twin, has been my confidante, my partner in crime, my best friend.  She's been my greatest champion and my biggest critic.

I can only begin to imagine what life would have been like if we were identical twins.

In The Identicals, the latest release from Elin Hilderbrand (a twin herself), this relationship is beautifully captured.  Through dynamic prose and engrossing dialogue, we are given a peek into what life is like with a twin.  Hildebrand chronicles a life of childhood games, fun and ease and then delves into adulthood where things get messy.

Hilderbrand develops characters with ease and brilliance.  Each personality within the story has their own nuances and traits that define them.  Their descriptions are so detailed, without becoming monotonous, that you feel a part of the community.  Get to know the pie maker, the contractor, the rich old lady, the doctor, the bartender - and feel as if you've known them all for years.  And, at the core of the story, the twins - Harper and Tabitha. It is difficult to determine who the favorite is because they both become so lovable, for different reasons.  You'll find yourself siding with one, then the other, then back to the first, and so it goes.  But in the end, you'll wish they were both your sisters.

Set in beautiful New England, a perfect backdrop for such a romantic story, Hilderbrand captures the landscape so easily, you'll think you're actually there.  You can hear the ferry boat running the eleven miles between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.  You can taste the clams and hear the Fourth of July Fireworks as if you are there on Lucy Vincent Beach.  You can feel the dense heat of a heavy East Coast Summer and want to dip your toes into the Atlantic Ocean to cool off.

And through all of this, you learn one thing - life throws curve balls.  It can break the heart and mend it back together.  It can knock you down and give you the courage to get back up.  But I wouldn't want to do any of it without a sister to hold my hand, tease me and pull my hair, and love me like only a sister can.  This book will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you want to hug your sister and wish she were your twin. Because, after all is said and done, there is nothing like the bond of a sister.

About L.V. Lewis

Growing up, L.V. Lewis wanted to be an internationally known rock star, but unfortunately, lived in the wrong part of the country to pursue that career (and neither American Idol nor The Voice were available then). An early love for the written word gave her the plan B she sought. Her career as a contract manager was not creative writing by a long shot, but it didn’t require her to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars required for a law degree. It does pay the bills while she dabbles in the publishing world as an author on the evenings and weekends.LV lives in Florida with her husband. They are the parents of four children, three of whom don’t think they need their parents anymore, so they share their home with a sweet female German Shepherd and an alpha male Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix who thinks he rules the world. Her love for writing is only eclipsed by her love for her family. LV is the winner of the AMB Ovation Award for Outstanding Debut Author in Urban Literature 2014 for her novel, Fifty Shades of Jungle Fever (2013).
