Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Inger Iversen

(A Love Against the Odds Novel)
Publication date: June 28th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

If you could see your life from inception to your death, would you change things or would you let your death play out as fate intended?
Abel is in search of only two things. A stable job and a safe place to lay his head at night after a mistake that cost him eighteen months of his life. As if fate had plans made only for him, Abel is offered a complicated job, and a chance to redeem himself to his old boss.
And then he meets her…
And Abel adds another item to his list—Hope.

At twenty-six, Hope has only ever slept with one man, and at her boss’s unsolicited advice, Hope plans to forget the abuse and degradation she suffered at her ex’s hand by seducing and bedding the next man she meets. Only, after Hope finds a promise of death at her doorstep, her plans are derailed and only chance at staying alive rests on the dedication of her new bodyguard and her own sheer will to live the life she deserves.
AND – look out for the last book in the series, Weathered Souls: Ivory & Eric, coming this fall!

EXCERPT:
Once Thea and Lex dropped off the groceries, Abel started cooking away. Hope’s mouth watered as scents wafted through the kitchen and met her nose. If the aroma from whatever was brewing on the stove was any indication, that man could cook.
Hope had always watched her figure while married to Mark. All it took was one extra pound, and he’d make sure her life was even more of a living hell than it already was. Every night, he’d force her onto the scale, and every night, he would find something about her body that needed to change. Your thighs shouldn’t meet in the middle. It’s disgusting. Hope’s stomach twisted in fear at the thought of placing food in her mouth. If you cared about the way you looked, this wouldn’t be necessary.
Mark’s voice was engrained in her head, and the memories of his degradation were the only reason she hadn’t gorged herself the second she was free. Because in the back of her mind, she would never truly be free of Mark. Perhaps, one day, her physical wounds would heal, but her soul would be forever scarred.
No excuses,” Abel muttered as he opened a steaming pot and stirred.
His comment pulled her from her memories. She glanced up. “Excuse me?”
Lifting a container of spices, Abel shook a liberal amount into the pot. “You’re going to eat, and then you’re going to sleep a full eight hours tonight.” Stirring the sauce, he added, “No excuses.”
Hope prickled at the demand in his tone. “I’m not a five-year-old.”
“No excuses.” He hadn’t even looked up, just stood there stirring, while she silently fumed.
She’d had enough of men telling her what to do. Taking in a deep breath with the intention of telling him just that, she paused. Abel had leaned down and opened the oven door. The scent of marinara sauce, baked cheeses, seasoned meat, and Italian seasoning assaulted her senses, and she could do nothing but stare in wonderment at the man in her kitchen.
“You’re underweight and have bags under your eyes.”
Though his words stung, Hope didn’t even flinch at his observation. The aroma coming from the oven had moved her to her feet, and she was now standing inches from him. It wasn’t as if she’d never smelled decent food before; it had just been a long time since she’d contemplated eating a delicious meal without the fear of gaining an ounce.
“It’s hard to eat healthy when you are on the run.” The excuse flew out of her mouth, as a force of habit.
Abel slightly lifted a brow, letting her know he didn’t believe her. “That changes tonight.” He turned his body to the side, making room for her to sidle up next to him. “For tonight, we’ll be dining on lasagna, Caesar salad, and garlic bread.” Gently, he took hold of her hand, his warmth invading her cold palm the second he touched her. Guiding her hand to the wooden spoon, he said, “Stir.” Then moved away from the oven and began to prepare the bread.
Hope stirred the sauce, light-headed from Abel’s magnetic touch. Of course, she was already riding on cloud nine at the thought of a full belly and a full night’s rest. But while she was hesitant to believe she’d be able to sleep through the night, Hope prayed Abel’s presence would trick her mind into believing she was safe—at least for now.
“Why are you making this sauce, if the lasagna is already in the oven?”
Abel didn’t glance up from smearing butter on the rolls as he spoke. “That is spaghetti sauce. We’ll make a lot of it, divide it up into containers, then freeze it.” He sprinkled some garlic powder onto the buttered rolls. “Can you turn the heat down under the sauce? We’ll need to let it simmer for another twenty minutes. Then pull the lasagna out of the oven, please.”
Hope did as she was told. Leaning her face over the cheesy meal, she inhaled. “Jesus, this smells like five pounds.” She regretted the words as soon as they left her mouth, but she couldn’t take them back. She turned to Abel to apologize for her crudeness, but instead of meeting angry eyes, she found his soft gaze.
“Listen to me.” He moved to her, his gait sure and steady. “You’re beautiful as is.” His words knocked her a bit off kilter. She opened her mouth to disagree, but Abel softly placed a finger over her lips to hush her. “When I make comments about your weight, it’s not because you aren’t attractive. It’s because I understand the stress your body is under. I want you strong and alert—always. After all this is said and done, you can go ahead and drop the pounds again, if that’s what you want.
“But never confuse me with Mark. I am not him. Whatever comments he made, or whatever way he made you feel about your body, starts and stops with him. I am not that man, and I never will be. We just need to get you healthy again.”
Hope was unsure of what to say. No one had called her beautiful in years. Mark had only ever complimented her when they were dating, and if another man so much as glanced at her, Mark would remind her that her thighs touched and men didn’t like that. Hope knew she wasn’t ugly, but she didn’t feel beautiful; she hadn’t for some time now. To hear Abel say it with such sincerity, while looking nowhere but in her eyes, made her feel good.

Author Bio:
USA Today Bestselling author Andie J. Christopher writes edgy, funny, sexy contemporary romance. She grew up in a family of voracious readers, and picked up her first Harlequin Romance novel at age twelve when she’d finished reading everything else in her grandmother’s house. It was love at first read. It wasn’t too long before she started writing her own stories — her first heroine drank Campari and wore a lot of Esprit.
Although, she set aside writing fiction for a while, her love of romance novels stayed with her through college, law school, and multiple cross-country moves. During one long East Coast winter, she decided writing a book would be a good excuse to avoid braving the elements. It was love at first write. Her heroes are dirty-talking alphas, and her heroines traded Esprit for Free People. (None of them would turn down a Campari, though.)

 Chapter 2
The Beginning
of the End
June 1, 2006

Baghdad, Iraq

I leave the Humvee running and step out into the hot street. The intense sun beats down on the back of my neck. Even with sunglasses on it seems obnoxiously bright. Fucking Iraq. Miserably hot, and here we are in the middle of the damn day, out in the worst of it.
My M-16A2 rifle feels like an old, familiar lover in my hands. The strangest sense of déjà vu washes over me. “Weird,” I mumble to myself, prying my eyes off of my rifle.
I quickly scan the traffic circle, soaking in all of the details. There is no traffic coming through; there’s a Humvee at each intersection, blocking off everything. No way in, no way out.
I glance up to Mike in the turret, manning the .50 caliber machine gun. I have known him for as long as I can remember. Mike was my next-door neighbor when we were kids. His mom used to babysit me while mine went to work, and she’d make us peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and then send us right back out to play. She always kept strawberry jam on hand because she knew it was my favorite. Hell, she was practically a second mother to me.
He is my best friend. He is more than that— he is my brother.
Mike’s back is to me as he watches the Iraqis, making sure none of them try to get into our perimeter. A horn honks and a driver gestures impatiently at the intersection. Mike quickly swivels his machine gun toward the car, silencing both the horn and the driver. I smile. We survived basic training together, then jump school in the stifling Fort Benning heat. We somehow got lucky enough to be stationed together. A sympathetic first sergeant then assigned us to the same squad.
I wipe the sweat from my brow. It is instantly replaced as the hot sun beats down on me. One bead of sweat forms on the scar on my hairline and runs down my face, following my jawline down to my chin, where it hangs on stubbornly.
I reach up and wipe the sweat from the scar under my helmet, and shiver. My mind drifts for a split second to Mike. I close my eyes and swallow back the lump rising in my throat.
Another small shiver runs down my spine despite the heat. I have that feeling you get when you know someone is right behind you and then you turn around and no one is there. When I turn around, I see a car parked on the high overpass we usually cross.
My heart starts to beat a little faster and my palms start to sweat more than usual in this awful heat. “I don’t like that fucking car,” I say.
“What?” Mike yells over his shoulder without taking his eyes off of the cars impatiently waiting for us to allow them through.
“I said I don’t like that fucking car over there.” This time I point at it with my left hand and hold my rifle tightly in my right. “I mean, I have never seen a car parked on that bridge. We almost always cross that bridge. That would leave us nowhere to go but right next to it,” I yell with a frown. “Doesn’t that seem weird?”
“Yeah, it is weird,” Mike agrees with a shrug.
I glance up at Mike for a moment, just a split second and then back to the car.
“I’m telling you I have a really bad feeling—” The car explodes with a deafening roar, shattering the peaceful silence of the afternoon.
The blast lifts me off of my feet and throws me backward into the Humvee. My head slams hard into the door behind me, my helmet bouncing off with a thud. The world spins for a moment and goes dark.

Only Him
By Jeanne St. James

Blurb:
This is not just a love story, it’s an obsession…
Sydney:
Never in my life did I think my high school obsession would move right next door. I’ve never wanted anyone but him. Reid Turner is my ultimate fantasy. And I still want him. Badly. When he watches me through my bedroom window taking matters into my own hands, things suddenly take a turn…
And now that I have him, I’m not letting him go.
Reid:
I never knew she existed and now I can’t get enough of her. She consumes me. When this night ends, there may not be anything left of me, she may own me completely. She my master and I her slave. In one way or another I will atone for never noticing her all throughout high school. I will gladly grovel at her feet to make up for what a fool I was.
Besides, who can turn down that luscious body of hers? Curves in all the right places, a mouth that could make a grown man cry, super responsive during sex, and none of my twisted desires so far have made her bat an eye. And did I mention? She lives right next door. She may be the perfect woman for me.
Note: All books in the Obsessed series are standalone novellas. It is intended for audiences over 18 years of age since it includes explicit sexual situations, including BDSM.

Excerpt #1
Do I find it a little weird that the woman stalked me throughout high school? Yes. Do I find it strange that she thinks I’m the only man for her? Absolutely. Although, I’m flattered. Besides the so-called “high school crush,” she seems perfectly sane.
Besides, who can turn down that luscious body of hers. Curves in all the right places, a mouth that could make a grown man cry. Super responsive during sex, and none of my kinky desires so far have made her bat an eye. And did I mention? She lives right next door.
Right. F*cking. Next. Door.
She may be the perfect woman for me.
I’m making a lot of assumptions, though. Like she doesn’t have kids, she has gainful employment, she’s not on any psychotropic medication, and she won’t stab me in my sleep. Simple things like that.
Maybe the next time she hits the head, I’ll check her nightstand drawers for weapons.
I snort and she looks at me with curiosity.
“What?”
“Nothing,” I answer. “Just thinking about that karma thing. It’s laughable.”
“Coincidence, karma, whatever. I’ll take it.”
Me, too. This has been a helluva night so far, and it isn’t over yet. I glance over at her clock. I haven’t stayed up this late since I was out partying in my early 20s.  I can’t believe I haven’t passed out yet, but the woman lying next to me is keeping me energized it seems.

He's my brother's best friend.
When my parents died, a part of me died along with them. Nothing mattered anymore; everything lost its meaning. I lived my life in moments, good and bad, but somewhere along the way, I stopped living.
We only had each other, and Cade, he did a hell of a job looking after me. They doubted we could make it; they doubted our resolve.
Braxton has lived next door to us ever since we moved in with my aunt after the horrific accident. Cade took to him so quickly; they've been inseparable ever since. Their favorite pastime? Torturing me. But something has shifted between us recently, and I'm seeing him in a whole new light now. I know my brother will never accept it, but he's drawing me in like a moth to a flame.

Excerpt #1:
God, that woman drives me absolutely nuts. Is she fucking crazy? We are in a city she has never been to before at nine at night and she is going exploring alone. Has she never seen any Unsolved Mysteries before?
She’s got my blood boiling, but I know Cade is taking it a lot harder. I pat him on the back as we ready to be the first band to play. “Hey, you okay, man?”
He glares back at me, understandably upset. “We’ve never been apart, Brax, not since that day. What if…what if something happens to her?”
“Nothing is going to happen to her,” I reply, attempting to calm his nerves. “She’s smarter than we give her credit for, and let’s face it, you guys aren’t twelve years old anymore. She can take care of herself. Plus, if anything bad happens, you’ve got that twinning thing going for you, right? Like instant intuition.” I don’t know if my words make any difference to him, but he huffs and then goes back to tuning his guitar.
Excerpt #2:
He pushes off the doorframe, closing some distance between us. He is now close enough that I can feel his breath on my face when he speaks. There are droplets of water left on his chiseled chest, and he looks like he just stepped out of a magazine ad.
The hairs all over my body are standing up, and I’m worried that I am visibly shaking. God, he is going to give me hell for this.
He leans over so that his lips are dangerously close to my ear. “What’s the matter, Em? Are you feeling okay?”
His breath tickles my ear and sends shivers down my spine.
“What are you doing?” I ask, my voice shaky.
“Nothing,” he replies, pulling away enough so I can see his face and then batting his eyelashes innocently. “I just love watching you squirm.”
I push him away, annoyed. Within seconds Braxton has my back up against a wall and he is pressing into me as he trails his mouth and breath dangerously close to my ear. It takes a few moments for me to register what else I feel because I can barely catch my breath. Braxton is Cade’s best friend. I know he gets off messing with me…but he’s never taken it this far before and I feel completely out of control.
Excerpt #3:
There are a slew of emotions running through my entire body. Elation. Excitement. Fear. Anxiety. You name it, I’m feeling it. I can’t wrap my head around how Braxton acted, and even worse, I think I wanted it.
He’s been the boy next door for over ten years and this is one of the first times I have ever felt this way about him. I want to put a finger on my thoughts and feelings, but I feel like a jumbled mess. Why now? Why after not making a move for ten years, would he go there now?
He’s been off-limits for as long as I’ve known him, and now the idea of seeing him any other way makes me feel a little sick. It puts a lot of pressure on me. I know he played it off like he was just messing with me, but I felt it; the undeniable chemistry; I know he had to as well.
A million thoughts are running through my head; it’s making me dizzy.
What if Braxton and I were to date? The idea of it sends shivers down my arms and spine. God, there are so many ways that could end up in disaster…Cade being almost every way. But there is something about the fear and unknown that pulls me in. I find myself wanting to know more about Braxton’s feelings.
