Hello everyone!  First, I wanted to say thank you for featuring my new release, Monsters Among Us, today.  It is the third and final book in the series, Monsters Among Us.  (I know, I named the last book after the series name.  Just to keep everyone on their toes.)

I thought it might be fun to do a different kind of character interview.  I got to thinking, what would happen if the heroines from both of my series met?  Eden, from my Watchers of Men series and Samantha, from Monsters Among Us.

Mm, I think the conversation might go a little something like this:

Eden (Watchers of Men):  Samantha, why do you let fear run your life?  You need to believe in yourself more.

Samantha (Monsters Among Us):  That’s easier for you to say, you weren’t abducted and tied up in a cabin.  Not everything is roses, Eden.  Believing in yourself won’t untie ropes.

Eden: True.  I may not have been kidnapped, but I’ve had my fair share of freaky things too.  

Samantha:  Scarier than a monster taking you promising you’ll fall in love with him one day?  

Eden:  I may not have a psycho-path trying to get me to fall for him, but try having a demon crawl out from underneath your bed.   I’ve been almost torn to shreds by my ‘monsters’ and if I didn’t have an angel watching out for me, I would definitely not be standing here today.  Just know you’re never alone, Samantha.  Remembering that helps me not be afraid and (Shrugs) leaving lights on when I sleep.

Samantha:  I wish I could chase away my demons with a lamp.  You’re right about one thing, Eden, I’m never alone.  Just wish it were angel’s eyes following my every move.

Eden:   Trust me, I know the feeling more than you know.  Try having fallen angels stalking you. (Shivers).

Samantha:  Fallen angels?  Okay, maybe I’ll stop complaining.  

Eden (smiles):   The trick is, you’ve got to believe you are capable of so much more.  Everyone has gifts, abilities that can help them face their fears.

Samantha:  Man, I wish I had your outlook on life.  So full of hope.  One thing I’ve learned is you can trust no one.

Eden:  Then you’ll always live in fear.

Samantha (cocks head to side):  Fear is the one thing I trust.

EXCERPT:

Rounding a corner, I flew right into a pair of bright aqua eyes. I knew those eyes, and the recognition felt like a slap to my face. I halted, not just to avoid collision but because of absolute shock.
Impossible. How’s he here?
“Blake,” Mack gasped.
I remained stunned, still hovering inches from his face. Where were all the Defenders? How did he just waltz in? Why wasn’t he bound? I couldn’t process what I was seeing.
Trying to recompose myself in those milliseconds we both remained in a locked gaze, it dawned on me that Jaxon had not rushed his brother. I only heard heavy breathing behind me, and I wanted desperately to turn around to see what Jaxon was doing. Was he preparing for an attack, or was he awaiting my command?
Yet, I couldn’t peel my eyes away from Blake. Those aqua pools pulled me closer, beckoned me nearer even though our faces were mere inches apart. Frustrated, I commanded myself to move. Show some strength. Straighten your back, for heaven’s sake. I’m like a freaking hunchback, practically bowing to him. What’s wrong with me? Back up… now.
I didn’t move. I couldn’t. It was like my bedroom all over again, when I’d found myself moving toward him, longing to be near him against my will. Only this time, it was worse. He was too close, the magnetic pull reinforced by his nearness. I felt helpless against it, which panicked me more.
He didn’t say anything, his eyes raking my face, searching for Sam. But I’m not Sam, I wanted to shout, though I didn’t. I just kept on gazing into his eyes like a dunce.
You’ve got to be joking, Sam. I heard and felt nothing. I know you’re here. You must be, because I’m freaking stuck in place.
Again, there was nothing to betray her presence until I did the unthinkable. I closed the gap and kissed Blake.
I kissed him like my life depended on it, like I couldn’t get enough of his mouth, like he was the only person in the room, never mind the others’ audible gasps. I wrapped my hands around the back of his neck, pulling him to me. Blake seemed just as shocked as I was by my actions. He stiffened at my touch, groaned under my lips, and then, before I could feel remorse, pulled back from me as fast as I’d come at him, untangling himself from my embrace.
There were those eyes again, probing my face, questions forming but not spoken.

Justin’s assistant claimed the president was in a meeting but added, “You sound out of breath, Lyssa. Is it urgent?”

“I’m running to a murder scene. Yes, it’s urgent.”

Justin came on the line, and she told him what little she knew.

“For God’s sake, be careful.”

That spooked her. But he was right. A man was dead. Was the killer still in the neighborhood watching the aftermath? Hanging around would be too risky, wouldn’t it? People in these neighborhoods watched what happened all day. And night. Someone must have seen something. Heard something.

She pressed forward the next two blocks and paused at the end of the Van Derzee’s brick walk. Where were the police? Emma had said she’d called them. Surely they hadn’t come and removed the body already? And why leave the door open?

Though the front door was open a crack, there was no sign of activity, no sound.

She took deep steadying breaths as she climbed the front steps and toed open the door.

From the front entry, she heard sobbing. “Emma?” she called in her loudest teacher voice.

“In here,” Emma squeaked from somewhere down the central hallway. One door stood open.

Lyssa peered in. Emma sat on the floor on the far side of the room between two windows, her back against the wall, knees drawn up, blotting her tears with a ragged tissue. She didn’t appear to be injured in any way, just huddled in shock.

Lyssa’s gaze shifted to the freestanding desk, angled to give whoever sat there a view out the bay window. Her breath hissed through her teeth at the sight of a man’s form, crumpled on its side, motionless, between the chair and the desk. His hair, white-blond, was the same shade as Emma’s. Over his chest, a stain darkened the blue polo shirt. One step closer, a coppery smell closed her throat and made her cough.

She avoided the man’s feet as she approached the desk, her attention drawn to a thin knife with a jeweled handle sticking up from the desk’s burnished wood. The murder weapon? Dark red stained the length of the blade and the wood below.

The weapon lured her. Her hand reached forward without her permission, until she almost touched the ornamentation. In her body she sensed the rage and triumph of the person who’d rammed it straight down into the dense wood.
