Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

NEXT STEP, BY THE CLOCK

ONLY A FEW FEET AWAY, and jarred from his thoughts, Sean jumped when the chimes sounded.

“Darling, what a beautiful clock.” Sara rushed past him to the mantle and lifted it up.

It was an antique, dating back decades, of that he was certain. It would have even been a classic for Quinn—and that said a lot.

It was made of pine, by the looks of it, with intricate wood scrollwork framing the front face. The hands were brass, and the golden numerals, Roman.

“I’m assuming this is the one that just rang.” She inspected the clock, running her fingertips along its edges.

“Yeah, and it nearly scared me to dea—” He moved in closer.

“Darling, what is it?”

“Could it be? Let me see that.”

She handed it over, her brow knitting.

“There’s a door in the back. Makes sense this would be where the inner workings are, but look at this.” Sean flipped the clock over and there was a keyhole.

“Oh, try the key.”

Sean took it from his pocket and slipped it in. It fit perfectly. He paused to look up at his wife. Her excitement mirrored his.

He went to the coffee table and placed the clock down. Sara dropped to the floor and he settled in beside her.

With a small twist, a panel opened.

Sara let out a gasp and Sean laughed.

“What? This is exciting.”

He had to give her that.

He took the panel and put it beside the clock. He expected it to reveal the inner workings, which it did, but it also provided something else—a folded piece of paper. He opened it up and read it out loud.

“Dear Sean, Up until this point we have been through a lot together, haven’t we? I knew you would find this. I sincerely hope that you were able to enjoy spending some of the money I left you. I also hope that you were able to find true love and someone to share it with. I need you to do me a favor.”

“This is amazing, darling. He knew you would find this. He left it for you. I wonder at what point in his life? Back when you first met, or more recently.”

“There’s still more to the letter.” Irritation laced his speech, but her speaking had yanked him out of his spiritual reunion with Quinn.

“When I met you, you were a street cop, but I followed your career and know that you turned out to be a murder detective. This is where you can help me, friend. My daughter, Cindy, was murdered. Now, the papers will tell you that she committed suicide, but not my girl. Please, do whatever you must, but find justice for her.”

When he finished reading it, Sean passed the letter to Sara.

“Did you even know he had a daughter?” she asked, her words hushed, teasing the edge of being audible. She must have picked up on his emotion.

“No, I’m embarrassed to say, it turns out I didn’t really know the man that well at all.”

Luna Rising By Selene Castrovilla Book Tour!

Luna Rising
By Selene Castrovilla
Genre: Women's Fiction

About the Book

Life begins at thirty-eight for Long Island mom and writer Luna Lampanelli, when she kicks her secretly gay husband to the curb. She's got her freedom, but what she wants is love. Luna knows she doesn't need a man to exist, but try telling that to her heart. Against the advice of Sunny, her snarky best friend, and Jiminy, the cautioning voice in Luna's head who just won't shut up, Luna sets course to find a mate. Luna speed and on-line dates her way into several short-lived, surreal relationships. There's Ari, the humorless Israeli who refuses to assimilate – to America, and to humanity. There's Alex, the young and handsome ex-crackhead who informs Luna he doesn't want to be monogamous—while they're in bed. There's Memphis, the wild-eyed sadomasochist. There's Red, angry and crippled, who becomes the catalyst for Luna to join Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. But before Luna can proceed to recovery, she meets the elusive but oh so appealing Trip. He's emotionally unavailable and has the Madonna-Whore Complex, but how can Luna (aka "whore") let him go when she enjoys his dry wit so much, and his body even more? Humorously haunting and packed with unspeakable truths, Luna Rising follows a woman's funny and heart-breaking struggle to relate with un-relatable men and an un-relatable world, and to figure out something even more un-relatable: herself.

"Murder is Academic" by P.M. Carlson The Maggie Ryan Series #2

Read an excerpt:

Near an upstate New York university, June 1968.
She was dead now, no more threat. The murderer pushed aside the long dark hair and, very carefully, cut the triangle into the young cheek. Done. Now, walk to the car calmly, get in. Back to the highway, driving coolly, back in control again.

The Christian conquerors teach that days don’t begin until midnight. The Maya know that it takes longer to hand over the burdens of time, and that the influence of the incoming god may begin at sunset. The day known as Monday, June 17, to those who count by the Gregorian calendar was pleasantly breezy, as befitted the Ixil 9 Iiq; but shortly after sunset it became one of the most tragic of Mary Beth’s life. A Mayan traditionalist might have attributed the change to the coming of that doubly unlucky day, 10 Aqbal.
But it had all begun quite cheerfully.
Maggie had borrowed Sue’s backpack in case Nick needed one for the picnic, and had packed her own and Mary Beth’s with the camp stove and the food. She hummed lightheartedly as she worked.
“You’re happy to see him, aren’t you?” Mary Beth had said, tightening the top of the salad dressing jar.
“Yes, but that’s only part of it,” Maggie had confessed. “It’s just good to know that’s behind me. It was a very bad time, and Nick was there. But I can see him now and just enjoy the friendship. The bad memories are there, way in the background, but the good ones are too. It doesn’t hurt anymore. It hurt quite a lot for a while.”

"Murder is Pathological" by P.M. Carlson Maggie Ryan 1969 #3

Read an excerpt:

Neurology grad student Monica Bauer helps out at nursing home, 1969.
She waited. He could not summon words at will, except for the overpractised early ones–– hello, good-bye, okay. They both waited for the disconnected words to drift through his mind, waited for him to recognize the right one as it happened by.
After a while he said, "Buzzing. In, in, what is it? Not nose, not eyes."
"Buzzing in your ears?"
"Ears. Okay. In my ears."
"Does it hurt?"
"No, except . . ." Long pause. "Sometimes."
"Sometimes your head hurts."
"Yes, sometimes. Always . . . buzzing." He leaned back, tired.
"Shall we sing a little?"
"Okay."
He couldn't remember words, but melodies were still easy for him. She had learned to sing "la-la-la" instead of trying to teach him to catch the elusive words. Now they sang together, her alto and his baritone blending pleasantly. It made him happy.
Finally Monica said good-bye, signed out, drove away. Mary and Jock, Bibbsy and Ted never would. Four friends, trapped by their own broken brains. Especially Ted, who still struggled courageously to fuse the bits of his shattered world into coherence. Who still remembered that things had once been different, that he had once been whole.
Maybe she would never discover anything that could help them. But with Dr. Weisen’s help, she meant to give it a damn good try.
Back in Laconia, she parked in front of her square brick house, then paused to wait for Maggie, who was at the corner mailing a letter. “Trying to send a message to the outside world?” called Monica.
“Yeah. My friend Nick.” Maggie, exuberant, sprinted from the corner, ending with a cartwheel. Then she pulled herself up with dignity and asked, “How were your friends today?”
“Soaking up sun.”
“Good for them. Listen, we’re going to the concert tonight. Can you come?”
“No, I’ve got to get back to the lab right after dinner. Have to check on those baby rats I delivered today.”
And so Monica was second on the scene. She unlocked the main door of the lab, and at the sound of her steps Norman erupted from the door of the animal quarters, gaping in terror.
“Miz Bauer! Come quick!” he pleaded. “Something terrible happened!”
Monica ran after him into one of Dr. Weisen’s animal rooms. She said, “Oh, Christ!”
In the center of the room lay a heap of slaughtered rats, their backs broken and mangled, their skulls smashed.

Snippet:

The mouth became quizzical and then gave a wry, wicked smile. "My help? I see ... And what can I do to help you?"

"I need a favor."

"A favor?" it cried with a sour note. "Not in four hundred years have I granted a favor to an Invernan, or anyone else for that matter. I do believe I admire your idiocy and raw nerve. Go on, ask your favor."

"I need Shadow tech."

"Shadow tech? Is that all?"

Gravity (Brewing Passion #4) Author: Liz Crowe Cover Reveal and Giveaway!

Title: Gravity (Brewing Passion #4)
Author: Liz Crowe
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: September 26, 2017
Cover Designer: Emmy Ellis, Totally Bound Publishing

Series Blurb:
A unique new romance series set in the trending world of the craft brewery. Meet the owners, employees and friends of Fitzgerald Brewing as they live, love, lust and laugh their way through the ups, downs and sideways shifts of small business ownership.

Blurb:
When Brock Fitzgerald is welcomed back into his family thanks to the sympathy of his sister-in-law Evelyn and the tolerance of his twin brother, Austin, he understands that this may be the best he’ll ever get for himself. Years spent partying, drinking, and screwing his way through life have left him drained, exhausted, and accepting of his many weaknesses. He’s grateful for the second chance he’s been offered, even as he continues to battle his demons, including one that leads him back into co-dependency with his oldest girlfriend. Kayla Hettinger never imagined that once she declared herself clean after several near-overdoses of opiates she’d find herself tending bar for her brother’s fiancée Melody, and enjoying what life she’d managed to build. When she strikes up a friendship with Brock over shared experiences and ginger ale, she discovers something needier and more frightening inside herself—and in Brock—than either of them feels equipped to handle. Breaking through the clutter of addiction and despair only to find your soulmate waiting on the other side seems like the stuff of fairy tales—until Brock and Kayla accept that being dependent on one another is the only way they’ll survive.

Excerpt #1 rated R for language:

She was tall, very thin, with huge, greenish-brown eyes, full lips and sharp cheekbones. Despite the heat, she wore a long-sleeved version of the FitzPub T-shirt, which engulfed her as if she were playing dress-up with someone else’s clothing. She smiled at him—if he could call it that since it was more a soft lifting of the corners of her lips for a few seconds, before she busied herself, pulling empty glassware out of the bar-level dishwasher and stacking them on their appropriate shelves.
“Who is that,” he whispered to Melody.
“Huh?” She looked up from her phone. “Oh, that’s Kayla. She’s Trent’s sister.”
“Trent? Your main man? Captain Business?”
She rolled her dark eyes at him. “Yes. Him.”
“Ah, I see.” He eyed the new chick’s rear view as she stretched to reach the highest shelves with the clean glasses. “I also see the resemblance.”
Melody shot him a look. “Hands off, lover boy,” she warned. “That girl is a hot mess.”
“Yeah? And I’m not?”
“Whatever. Listen, Trent and I are having people out to the lake house in a few weeks, once this craziness is done here. You’re invited. Bring a date.” She blew him a kiss and headed around the bar and into the kitchen, talking six miles a minute en Español.
“We’re a regular United Nations around here, aren’t we, Princess?” He kissed Rose’s chubby knee and sat a few minutes, watching Kayla work. She was graceful, like a dancer, but never met anyone’s eyes for very long. She had a habit of tugging the already overstretched sleeves of the shirt even farther, as if hiding something.
And like that, he realized he was gazing at a fellow junkie.
“Takes one to know one, kid,” he said, raising a finger to get her attention.
“Hi, I’m Brock Fitzgerald,” he said, holding out the hand that hadn’t gotten befouled earlier. She did that weird almost-smile thing again and touched her fingertips to his before giving her sleeve another tug.
“Kayla,” she said, her voice soft and sing-songy. “Nice to meet you. This is your place?” She gestured around the bar.
“Ha! Hardly. Or better yet, I wish. It’s my brother, Austin’s place. Well, his and Evelyn’s I guess.” He pulled Rose down, mainly because his neck was getting a little too warm all of a sudden. “This beautiful creature is Rose Fitzgerald. My niece.”
“I see,” Kayla said as she observed the girl from a safe distance. “So what can I get you Mr. Fitz—?”
“Oh Jesus, please do not call me that. It’s Brock. And I need a double IPA and a ginger ale. I’m running the beer up to Evelyn.” He smiled by way of covering his embarrassment at drinking ginger ale.
But her smile went a hair past ghostly as she pulled a to-go cup with a straw from under the bar and sipped. “I love the ginger ale myself,” she said, before turning to pour his drinks.
Yep, he thought, as he held Rose on his lap and she slapped both hands on the bar top before grabbing the coaster and trying to cram the entire thing into her mouth. “Too many carbs, doll face,” he said, taking the thing away from her and holding it over his head while she worked her way into a snit. “Somebody needs a nap,” he said, tossing the half-masticated round of cardboard toward the garbage behind the bar, missing by half a mile.
Kayla picked it up and threw it away then put the two drinks on the bar, well out of Rose’s reach. “So, how exactly are you going to get two drinks and that,” she pointed her elbow at Rose, “up to Evelyn’s office anyway?”
“Easy peasy,” he said, slipping the girl back up to his shoulders. But she had other ideas and went stiff as a board, as her snit worked its way into a full-throated howl.
