Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Dark fantasy
Ambition. Betrayal. Revenge.

Centuries ago, the Faerie Realm was decimated by a vile and corrupt spell. To survive, the different faerie races—led by the Fae—escaped to the Human Realm where they’ve lived ever since.

As the Fae Patriarch of Boston’s criminal underworld, Aohdan Collins enjoys his playboy lifestyle while he works from the shadows to expand his growing empire. Until one night when he shares a shot of whiskey with the lovely Seireadan Moore…

A Fae Seer, Seireadan is haunted by a vision of the Fae responsible for destroying Faerie and murdering her family. Common sense tells her to stay away from Aohdan, but his magnetism and charm are irresistible.

As their passionate affair intensifies, Seireadan is pulled into the center of the underworld. And while her heart is bound to Aohdan, she cannot let go of her lifelong quest to hunt down the Fae who haunts her visions… especially when she realizes Aohdan might be the key to helping her find him.

But is revenge worth betraying the one she loves?

SUSAN K. HAMILTON: Susan K. Hamilton is the author of three novels in the fantasy genre: Shadow King, Darkstar Rising, and The Devil Inside (forthcoming in 2019). Shadow King landed on the Top Ten finalist list of the 2016 Launchpad Manuscript Competition out of over 1,000 entrants from 24 countries and was published by Inkshares in October 2018.  The Devil You Don’t reached the Top 25 finalists list the following year and will be published under the name The Devil Inside. Susan lives near Boston, Massachusetts with her husband and cat. An avid equestrian, you can often find her at the barn when she’s not writing. She rediscovered her love for writing at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst when her writing teacher freshman year told the class that their last assignment was “to write something creative.”

An Interview with
Susan K. Hamilton

  1. Can you explain a little more about how Shadow King came about through the Launchpad Manuscript Competition? I entered the original manuscript because I had the chance to get feedback from the judges, something that can be hard to come by at times. I was fortunate enough to make the Top Ten Finalists list. Inkshares was offering one of the grand prizes in Launchpad, and although I didn’t win that, Shadow King had garnered enough support during the competition, that I was able to move forward with publishing through Inkshares.
  2. Why did you decide to set a magical book in such the more traditional setting of Boston? When I was first thinking about the concept of Shadow King, I asked myself the question, “if the fairies we know from folklore lived here, with us, what would they do?” I laughed thinking about how people would feel if they had a leprechaun for a coffee barista or taxi driver… but that also made me wonder what the dark fairies would do. The logical answer to me was that they’d be criminals. From there, the character of Aohdan Collins was born.
  3. How did you come up with the character’s names? Many of my names have a cultural basis. Many of the Fae characters have names derived from Gaelic, whereas the fairies from Middle Eastern legends were given Persian-inspired names. And in a few cases, to be honest, I just made a name up.
  4. Where do you get your inspiration? That’s actually hard to answer -- I get it from lots of different places. I’ve gotten ideas from fragments of songs, from daydreaming, from random conversations. There isn’t one process I have to think up a story. Often a character pops into my head and that in turn makes me wonder what that character’s story is.
  5. Do any characters bear resemblance to people you know in real life? Not really. There may be a quality here or a common phrase there that someone uses, but I try not to base my characters on any one individual person.
  6. What got you into writing fantasy? I always loved to read it, so when I started writing, I tended to write it as well. For me, it gives me the freedom to create a whole new world if I want to. In Shadow King, I went with more of an urban fantasy and really enjoyed figuring out how to get my fantasy characters and the concept of magic to work in a “real” city.
  7. Do you have a way to deal with writer’s block? When I get stuck, sometimes it helps to write something else. A blog post, short story, even a letter to myself just ranting about what’s frustrating me. Other times I need to just walk away for a little while. I find if I give myself some space, and do something else -- especially something where my mind can wander -- it all gets figured out. In fact, I came up with the entire idea for Shadow King while I was raking leaves in my yard.
  8. Will we be able to visit this world again? Hopefully! I have some ideas for a second book featuring the same characters and hope to start really making some headway on that in the near future.

Behind me, the door I’d entered through opened. A very tan redhead showing signs of aging from many days spent in the sun entered carrying a laptop bag and shouldering a camera. A red Carnegie Mellon University baseball cap that looked like it had been run over by a garbage truck covered part of her tough, but beautiful face. She looked me over like I was a mongrel who’d wandered in begging for table scraps.
“You need something?” She dropped her stuff down on the cushioned chair next to the counter.
“Uh, yes, I wondered if I could get some clippings or microfilm or copies or whatever it is newspapers give for issues two to eight years old. Are they digitized yet?” I stammered.
“Seriously, what do you want?” She pulled her Ray-Bans off and the gray-blue of her eyes stunned me for a moment. Using her sunglasses, she tapped my shoulder. “Hello?”
The faint odor of cigarette smoke assaulted me when she got close.
“Clippings, you know, news from the past,” I said.
As she slipped the glasses into a case from her purse she said, “Yes, but you implied that something here was digitized.” She pursed her thin lips. “This newspaper went online three years ago, so, the last three years are available online in the archives section if you buy a subscription. You a subscriber?”
“I don’t have a subscription,” I said defensively.
“Figures. This is why my job is constantly in danger. Everyone expects news for free.” Her fine hair moved in a blur as she shook her head derisively while she rummaged for something in her bag.
“Hey, I’m happy to buy a subscription. I support journalism,” I said. It sounded lame.
We both flinched as a thunderous banging rang through the room as something or someone hit the other side of a door to my left.
She threw her hands up, exclaiming, “Not again!”
“What? What’s that?” I said.
“Calling the cops,” she sang out. “They said they’re gonna start charging us if this happened again,” she whispered.
Another, more urgent banging erupted through the room. The reporter had her cell out.
“Wait,” I said. “Is it really that dangerous?”
“No, just annoying.” She pressed a button on her phone. “You believe this? Now I’m on hold. I could probably walk over to the police station faster. He’ll probably take a dump on the floor by the time we get back.”

The Perilous Adventures of the Cowboy King by Jerome Charyn Book Spotlight and Giveaway!@LiverightPub @jeromecharyn @CowboyKingTR

“Jerome Charyn has long been one of our most rewarding novelists, and he has upped the ante in The Perilous Adventures of the Cowboy King, his frolic about Teddy Roosevelt in the West.”
—Larry McMurtry

“Wild, extravagant, over-the-top mythic imagination rooted history/fact—brash zaniness and fierce moral vision. . . . Don’t turn to the first page of Jerome Charyn’s remarkable The Perilous Adventures of the Cowboy King unless you have time to be utterly swept away.”
—Joyce Carol Oates

In this novel, which Kirkus Reviews calls, “colorful, entertaining” in its starred review, Charyn gives new dimension to Roosevelt, revealing Manhattan’s swampy underbelly after the Civil War, TR’s farcical and dangerous expeditions to the Dakota Badlands, and his personal anguish at losing his mother and wife on the same day.  Like the best of E.L. Doctorow, historical detail is supported by a keen grasp of language and marked by a lack of sentimentality about the past.  With a colorful supporting cast—including Buffalo Bill Cody, Eleanor Roosevelt, Leon Czolgosz (President McKinley’s assassin), plus Josephine, the loveable mountain lion who was the mascot of the Rough Riders (seen with Roosevelt on the cover), and the Rough Riders themselves, whom Roosevelt never deserted,

Raising the literary bar to a new level, Jerome Charyn re-creates the voice of Theodore Roosevelt, the New York City police commissioner, Rough Rider, and soon- to-be twenty-sixth president through his derring-do adventures, effortlessly combining superhero dialogue with haunting pathos. Beginning with his sickly childhood and concluding with McKinley’s assassination, the novel positions Roosevelt as a “perfect bull in a china shop,” a fearless crime fighter and pioneering environmentalist who would grow up to be our greatest peacetime president.
THE PERILOUS ADVENTURES OF THE COWBOY KING is historical fiction and Jerome Charyn at their very best.

about the life of Jerzy Kosinski, the controversial author of The Painted Bird. In 2010, Charyn wrote The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson, an imagined autobiography of the renowned poet, a book characterized by Joyce Carol Oates as a "fever-dream picaresque."

Harry Street’s character is the catalyst for this book which binds the several principals and their separate actions to make the story flow. Although the work is fiction, Harry Street was a real person from the author’s boyhood. A gentleman, always affable and decidedly English. However, gentleman he may have been, the author could never reconcile why he succumbed to his exile so readily and why his family turned their back on their son. The author has taken a liberty and changed Harry’s easy disposition to express his wrath for Harry’s ready acceptances of his circumstances. Too, the time frame has been altered to reveal an entwined vendetta that takes the reader from the horrors of the First World War, to the pampered lives of the aristocracy and the vastness of Australia. A race to secure aspirations for one man, domination for another and reparation for yet another.

Chapter 7
London, January 1918 A tall thin man with an intelligent face, dark hair brushed straight back, and in black formal attire complete with tails answered the chimes. Hesitantly, Jack Carter inquired whether he had the correct address. He was assured that he was expected and asked to wait in the parlour. The gentleman in tails excused himself. ‘Lord and Lady Anthony will receive you in the library sir, please follow me,’ he informed Jack in a cultured and deep voice on his return, indicating with a gesture for him to fall in behind. The American gazed in awe at his surroundings, noting the marble staircase spiralling upwards towards another vastness of excellence in baroque architecture. He followed the long-coated figure who patiently stopped every so often, conscious he could no longer hear Jack's squeaky footsteps, and to allow him to admire his surroundings. Jack paid laudatory glances at the several paintings that adorned the coachwood panelling which made up the interior walls of the lower floor. He quickly gawked at Picasso abstracts, a Bruegal’s Village Marketplace Scene, the Vandyke portrait of Charles the First, a tapestry by Sheldon depicting the Harvest, and a Madonna in stone sculptured by Henry Moore. He bestowed admiring glances at the many and varied pieces of period furniture that graced his lavish surroundings. Following the gentlemen's gentleman, his new shoes squeaked and echoed hollowly on the mosaic flooring, the only sound to be heard apart from the ticking of the large Grandfather Clock, which was encased in a polished cabinet of Beechwood. Benson stopped before the library doors, he could feel the tall man's breath on the nape of his neck as he knocked against the heavy, ornately panelled timbers and waited for permission to enter. ‘Mister Carter Sir, your Ladyship,’ he announced, at the same time moving aside and encouraging a hesitant Jack to enter the room. They stood together, near the large open fireplace, whether for strength in the nearness of one another's presence, or, to display a united front for Carter's benefit. One glance was all he needed to see who Katrina resembled. It was like looking at a picture of her thirty years from now, or so he imagined. If anything, he thought Katrina would be slightly taller, favouring her father in that respect. ‘That will be all for the moment Benson,’ said the same husky voice. ‘Very good my Lady,’ Benson replied, bowing and closing the door behind his retreating person. They stood facing Jack for what seemed an age before Lord Anthony broke the silence. ‘I am Katrina's father, Lord Anthony of Bedfordshire and this is her mother, Lady Anthony,’ he began, walking forward distastefully to shake Jack's hand. Jack nodded, the man had introduced his title, his position, he was immediately wary. ‘Won't you be seated young man?’ Lady Anthony invited, indicating the ornate hand carved Sheraton lounge piece.
It seemed to the American she was being courteous rather than kind. He felt uncomfortable. For the first time in his life he wanted to turn and run. When the carriage had stopped in front of the large Mid-Georgian House with the sash windows, leadlight stained glass, and the elegant doorway, he queried the coachman, feeling he had made a mistake.

‘No mistake Guv,’ was the rejoinder. ‘They're loaded that lot, tis only the Town 'Ouse, got mansions and castles all over the bleedin' country. Four pence sir,’ he added, holding a gnarled hand to collect the money. ‘Thank you Guv.’

A retired high school teacher, Darrel McGovern lives with his wife, Helen, in a modest home in the Newcastle suburb of Fletcher. Their family have left the roost, and they are proud grandparents. Until retirement, Darrel hadn’t found the time to pursue his passion for Australian history, research or writing. As well as writing, Darrel is a keen fisherman, lawn bowler and golfer. He loves being surrounded by family and friends, and along with Helen visits Adelaide and Darwin to see his grandchildren as often as possible.

Set New Writing Goals for the New Year By Author Kelli A. Wilkins Guest Post!

Set New Writing Goals for the New Year

By Author Kelli A. Wilkins

www.KelliWilkins.com

Happy New Year!

It’s January and everyone is talking about making changes and setting goals for themselves. And why not? We have brand-new calendars hanging on our walls that are filled with unexplored days yet to come.

But do you find yourself gazing at your new calendar and wondering, “How is it 2019? Where did last year go? I had all those plans…”

If so, don’t stress out. Not everyone accomplishes every goal they set for themselves. Take some time to look back at what you achieved last year and start thinking about this year. Evaluating your writing goals and setting reasonable action steps now will help you get on target for 2019.

Perhaps you took time off from writing and want to get back in the swing of things. Maybe your writing muse went on vacation to Hawaii and hasn’t come back yet. That’s okay. It’s fine to take a break from writing for a while—but not too long. (If you rest too long, you’ll rust!) Writing exercises, journaling, and freewriting story ideas are great ways to revive your motivation.

Keep in mind that everyone’s writing career and writing goals are different. Think about what you want for you. Do you want to finish the novel you started last year (or haven’t started yet)? Send out a dozen short stories? Enter a contest?

If you write magazine articles, are there any major publications you’re targeting? Start brainstorming ideas now, make a list of places to send queries, and check out potential markets for their latest submission guidelines. (It’s also time to be thinking 3 to 6 months ahead and plan those spring and summer articles.)

Write fiction? Have you found any new markets? Signed up for online market newsletters? If you’re published in one genre (say, romance or horror), are you going to expand your horizons and write a different type of story this year?

Is the writing part going fine, but you need to develop (or enhance) your online profile and/or marketing? Explore writing-related websites and blogs, Yahoo Groups, social media groups, and advertising opportunities for your work. Are your blog, website, and author page(s) up-to-date? Should they get a refresh (or a major overhaul) for the new year?

Make a list of all you want to accomplish in the next few weeks and months. Having a list of projects and priorities will help keep your writing objectives on track. For example, if you want to explore new markets for your short story, put “find new markets” on your list.

If you’re determined to write a new book, make a timeline for research, character development, plotting, etc. Give yourself a deadline for when you want to start writing and stick to it. Decide how many pages or chapters you want to finish each day/week/month. Little by little, your book will take shape, and you’ll be amazed at your progress.

No matter what your writing goals are, a little pre-planning will help you focus and allow you to flow from one writing project to another. Preparation also keeps you motivated and fends off writer’s block, because you always have “the next thing” to work on.

When you write down your goals, start your sentences with a positive statement, such as: “I will finish the rough draft of my novel by June 1” or “I will submit six articles to magazines.” After you’ve made the list, note what you need to do to get started. This could include setting aside specific times to write each day, getting writer’s guidelines, or sending out query letters. Then, pick one project (the most time-sensitive one, or your personal favorite), and get to work. Spend time targeting your goals now, and you’ll be on your way to success!

But keep a balance. Don’t let yourself become so goal oriented that you burn yourself out, stress yourself half to death, and let the writing life take the place of your real life. (Believe me, I’ve been there and I’ve learned.)

Family, friends, pets, neighbors, and having fun are all important parts of being alive. Make time for your writing, but also make time for yourself and those you love. (Yes, it’s perfectly okay to leave the husband parked in front of a movie and go write for two hours. But make sure when you turn the computer off, you focus on the present moment.)

Every new day is bursting with hope, possibilities, and opportunities to make this year really great. Set some goals for yourself. Write as much as you need to (or want to), and then sit in the yard and watch the world go by for an hour. You’re worth it!
