Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Librarian Tru Beckett, ardent defender of the printed word, is about to find out that keeping murder checked out of her beloved library is much harder than she thought...

Tru Beckett succeeded in building a secret book room in her now bookless library, where book lovers from lovely Cypress, South Carolina, can rejoice in the printed word. Now she's working hard to maintain the little library downstairs while keeping her "real job" upstairs in the bookless technology center. The last thing she needs is a mysterious vandal who seems intent on breaking into her secret book-filled sanctuary and creating chaos. The nasty interloper doesn't steal anything, but brutalizes the books, damaging them and knocking them off shelves.

A patron of the secret book room tells Tru that there have been creepy goings-on at the library for years, especially in the basement where the secret book room is located. He's heard rumors of a poltergeist that haunts the library, determined to scare off readers. Tru is certain it's hogwash, but she's at a loss to think of who might be vandalizing the beautiful books she fought so hard to protect. And when a dead body shows up right behind the library, Tru is certain that it's not a ghost but a cold-blooded killer that she and her trusty tabby Dewey Decimal will need to uncover.

The 2 Sisters Pet Valet Service is purring along, thanks to the entrepreneurial talents of retired schoolteacher Gwen Franklin and her bestie and business partner, Nora Goldstein. But when the fur starts to fly, they become partners in crime detecting as well . . .

At Nora’s request, Gwen is happy to accompany her to a meeting with ex-hubby #3’s lawyer. Much to Nora’s surprise—and dismay—she’s been named executor of said ex’s will. The fact that the man has been missing for years and was just declared legally dead only makes an already complicated process more so. And besides, is he really dead? What’s not a surprise is that Nora’s twin ex-stepchildren are pressing for access to their father’s dry cleaning fortune . . .

With Gwen’s assist, it’s time for Nora to do a little digging. It turns out that the twins’ catering business is failing—and that their dad’s business was laundering more than clothing. Soon, Gwen and Nora are infiltrating a long list of dirty deeds, including fraud and illegal gains. And the perpetrators are all too close to home. The police may want Gwen and Nora to stick to their own line of work, but the pair are determined to make sure the truth comes out in the wash—before someone ends up in the discard bin . . .

City of the Dead by Greg Jolley Book Blitz and Giveaway!

City of the Dead
Greg Jolley
(The Obscurité de Floride Trilogy, #3)
Publication date: October 1st 2021
Genres: Adult, Suspense

Jayden has just seven nights to rescue her ownership of the Cimetière du Dernier Vol. cemetery in the backwaters of Northern Florida, by any means necessary, including murder.

Welcome to her world, where life among the dead goes on forever.

Jayden has the means, and certainly knows the ways. But the clock is ticking. On the seventh night, the annual Grand Soirée is to be held. If she can pull it off, her future is secure. The problem is the four chairs that she must fill as her part of the event, a planned money-making scheme involving a grim act of necromancy. Four messengers will be put to death and sent over to acquire lucrative market knowledge for the attending gullible investors.

Can anyone stop her?

Two escaped victims are trying. April Danser and her twelve-year-old criminal partner Kazu, both mangled and frightened, have only a few nights to derail Jayden’s deadly train of murder and madness. At times teaming up with other residents of the cemetery – a ghastly cast of recluses – April and Kazu are in the fight of their lives, not only to end Jayden’s deadly plans, but also to survive her repeated attacks.

Taking place during seven nights in the once famous cemetery, City of the Dead is a dance between good and evil with everything at risk, including life and sanity.

EXCERPT:

“Nonsense, Reynard,” the officer leading him said as he led the man to the cruiser second in line. “You’ve got a mile of priors.” There was more back and forth until the car door was slammed.

Next to step into the courtyard was a tiny woman, maybe four feet tall. She looked skinny from illness, her face pasty. Her eyes belied her appearance. She was alert and grinning and talking up a storm. The sheriff at her side was nodding along to all she had to say, looking this way and that. She insisted on walking in front of him.

Eyes wide, April cracked the water bottle and drank.

“What next?” she whispered. The little woman was carrying a cage in both hands. Inside was a three-foot alligator, looking docile but teeth bared. The woman and her alligator passed by April, not noticing her, and stopped at the back of the second ambulance.

Next was an elderly woman on one of the gurneys. She also appeared to be seriously ill and weak. She didn’t speak or look up until she had been rolled by. Seeing the little woman at her side at the open doors of the ambulance, the elderly woman smiled, and life returned to her eyes.

“How’s my dear Eiffel?” she asked.

“Same as always. Short, fiery, horny. You?”

“Me? Just relief. You and I will have a party…” She paused to clear her throat. “Every day until…” she trailed off, coughing.

“You betcha. Gigolos and bubbly every night.” Eiffel took the woman’s hand as the paramedics locked the gurney wheels to glide it gently inside the ambulance.

April admired their caring and kindness, not having the slightest idea what they were talking about.

Soundtracks Aren’t Just for Movies Anymore

By Valerie Taylor

Author of What’s Not Said (She Writes Press, 2020) and What’s Not True (She Writes Press, August 2021)

During the pandemic, movie theaters were shutdown, along with the rest of us. Luckily, many of us were able to get our fill of our favorite films through the ever-growing streaming services.

What makes a movie a time-honored favorite? The story? Book adaptation? Popular actors? Action? Great dialogue? Intriguing setting?

All of the above—or a combination of these—wouldn’t you agree?

What about the music—the soundtrack? Take a look at these four songs. Hum each, one-by-one. Can you name the movies these were featured in with just a first few notes? I bet you can! (answers at bottom):

  • “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” by Marvin Gaye

  • “The Time of My Life,” by Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes

  • “I Will Always Love You,” by Whitney Houston

  • “My Heart Will Go On,” by Celine Dion

Now, you’re asking, what does this have to do with reading a good book? In one word: Playlist. With the advent of iTunes, Spotify, Pandora and others, there’s a playlist for everything, right? Running, meditating, cooking, sleeping…and so on! And they’re created by the famous, and the not-so-famous!

As I wrote my first book, What’s Not Said, I noticed authors, too, joining in on the fun, often creating playlists to accompany their books after publication. This gave me an idea! Since, as an indie author, I have a say about what is in my book. So, I thought: why don’t I create a playlist for What’s Not Said and include it in the back of the book?

So that’s what I did. Rather than wait until the book was printed, I figured out how to create a playlist on Spotify. (Hint: If I can do it, anyone can!) The What’s Not Said Playlist consists of seventeen songs and can be found in the back of the book ahead of the Book Club Discussion Guide or directly on Spotify.com. (https://spoti.fi/2sRDvp6

And then I kept that idea going, and created the What’s Not True Playlist of a dozen songs. Also available in the back of the book, along with the Book Club Discussion Guide, or directly on on Spotify.com. (https://spoti.fi/37ZKBJb)

As a final note, I believe book playlists become soundtracks that can enhance the journey and reading experience, making the story even more unique and memorable. What do you think?

“Something like that.” Damaris smiles down at the bird. She quietly mouths something to the creature and gives me a side-eyed grin. For a moment, the bird freezes, and it almost seems as though it can understand her. Damaris raises her hand in the air and the bird takes flight, the darkened tips of its wings now on full display.

“That was so cool.” My words come out breathy and hitched as I place a hand to my heart. “How did you do that?”

Damaris shrugs. “It’s no big deal.”

And so it began. Chelsea and Damaris. Damaris and Chelsea. Instant best friends. I’m positively smitten with this beautiful, interesting girl who is so magnetic, she even draws animals to her. It is strange to admit, but even I can’t ignore the fact that maybe I was forming a little bit of a crush on her. Damaris. Yoga goddess. Smoothie aficionado. Animal whisperer. My new best friend.

One Night With an Earl
Tina Gabrielle
Published by: Entangled: Amara
Publication date: October 18th 2021
Genres: Adult, Historical Romance

Ana Gardner is determined to lose her virginity before her thirtieth birthday. She’s no stranger to fake identities, having posed as a chaperone since the scandal that destroyed her titled family. So she dons a mask, changes into a low-cut red gown, and attends the city’s most elite brothel, the Silver Chalice.

Oliver Bedford, the imposing Earl of Drake, is only at the Silver Chalice to appease his debauched friends—until he spots Lady Scarlet. She’s refreshing…and a complete mystery. Certain she’s a lady in disguise, Oliver is determined to learn her identity, but she eludes him at every turn.

The night with Oliver was unforgettable. But when he arrives at her employer’s home, she’s horrified to discover her lover is the Earl of Drake, the son of the man responsible for her father’s death and subsequent family ruin. And that he’s there to court her young charge.

Oliver never had any interest in the debutante, but he is drawn to her chaperone—a woman he soon realizes is his Lady Scarlet. Now that he’s found her, she claims she wants nothing to do with him, even though her kisses say otherwise. Fortunately, Oliver is not one to give up when he finds something he wants…and he wants Ana. In his bed, and in his life. Forever. But first, he must persuade her to trust him—and to believe that one wild, passionate night can turn into forever.
