Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Starting over at fifty might be hard, but it shouldn’t be deadly…

Still recovering from an injury that might have permanently derailed her career as an international war correspondent, Kate Tessler is living in her childhood bedroom and pondering her second act when another case lands in her lap. Kate’s father and his coffee group are worried. Their friend Larry married a younger woman who now insists he has dementia and won’t let any of his friends visit. They’re convinced that Larry’s wife and her two adult, dead-beat kids are out to steal his money. Can Kate help?

Soon Kate and her unusual gang of sidekicks are unofficially, officially investigating. But before they can dig out the truth, a murder raises the stakes. Now they need to prove Larry is both mentally competent and not a killer. They’ll have to find the real murderer—without risking their own lives in the process.

Kris Bock Recipe 2

Many cozy mysteries include recipes or craft instructions. That makes sense when your main character is a baker or owns a craft store. My amateur detective is a war correspondent forced to move back to her parents’ house in Arizona after an injury. People come with to her with problems because of her background, which makes it easy to come up with cases for her to work. She is not, however, much of a cook or baker.

On the other hand, she collects a number of helpers, including her father’s friends, Marty and Joe Washington. Marty likes to bring the blender and ingredients for margaritas to their planning meetings. Joe has gotten into baking in his retirement, so he might bring muffins, cupcakes, or cookies. So in honor of Joe, here’s one of my favorite recipes. These are quick, easy, unusual, and incredibly tasty, especially when served with a nice cup of tea and a good book.

Chai Tea Shortbread Cookies

If using loose-leaf tea, grind the tea into a rough powder first. If using tea bags, cut open the tea bags (4-6) and measure. You can mix the ingredients in a food processor, but a hand mixer works too. You can also press the dough into a shortbread pan or mold and bake for about 30 minutes.

2 cups all-purpose flour

2/3 cup sugar

2 tablespoons chai tea

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Blend the flour, sugar, chai, and salt.

  3. Mix in the butter and vanilla. Press the mixture into a ball of dough.

  4. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

  5. Take a spoonful of dough (about a tablespoon) roll it, and place it on the baking sheet. Or you can roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/3-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter and place cookies 2 inches apart.

  6. Bake until the edges are golden, 8-12 minutes depending on size. Let cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks and cool to room temperature.

In eastern Kentucky, Miranda Trent runs a unique tour company called Paint & Shine, but sometimes the peaceful mountains play host to murder . . .

Miranda’s business—combining Appalachian adventure tours with art and a bit of moonshine—is the perfect place for an outdoor sporting goods company to hold an employee retreat. It’ll be a challenge, but the money they’re paying will definitely help with building her new distillery.

Miranda has lots of teamwork-fostering activities planned, from sketching classes to Southern cooking, but the executive running things prefers a more competitive spirit. In fact, after the workers are split into teams, they’re told that only the winners will keep their jobs, and tensions begin to spike. Even after a participant is found dead, the contest continues—while Miranda starts drawing her own conclusions about the ambitious attendees. Now she just has to find the proof . . .
