Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

A Turbulent Peace by Paul Walker Blog Tour! @PWalkerauthor #HistoricalFiction #BlogTour #CoffeePotBookClub @PWalkerauthor @cathiedunn

Book Title: A Turbulent Peace

Author: Paul Walker

Publication Date: July 2022

Publisher: Sharpe Books

Page Length: 305 pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

January 1919.

Following the armistice, Mary Kiten, a volunteer nurse in northern France, is ready to return home to England when she receives a surprise telegram requesting that she report to Paris. The call comes from her Uncle Arthur, a security chief at the Peace Conference.

Within minutes of arriving at the Majestic Hotel in Paris, Mary hears a commotion in the street outside. A man has been shot and killed. She is horrified to earn that the victim is her uncle. The police report the attack as a chance robbery by a known thief, who is tracked down and killed resisting arrest.

Mary is not convinced. Circumstances and the gunshot wound do not indicate theft as a motive. A scribbled address on Arthur’s notepad leads to her discovery of another body, a Russian Bolshevik. She suspects her uncle, and the Russian, were murdered by the same hand.

To investigate further, Mary takes a position working for the British Treasury, headed by J M Keynes.

But Mary soon finds herself in the backstreets of Paris and the criminal underworld.

What she discovers will threaten the foundations of congress.

Excerpt 5:

I slowed in the foyer, gasping to catch my breath. Two men stopped their conversation and stared. Other eyes were on me as I crossed the foyer, up a few marble steps, and down a corridor to room number 28. I knocked and waited a couple of seconds before trying the door handle. It was open. I edged into the room, calling his name. His bedroom door opened, and John came out hoisting up braces over his shirt.

‘Mary, what is it?’

‘Please John… please come with me. It’s urgent. I’ll explain on the way.’ I picked up the khaki jacket hanging over the back of a chair and handed it to him. ‘You’ll need your overcoat as well.’

‘Where… just a minute. Wait.’

Too slow. I grabbed his arm and pulled him. Desperation must have shown on my face because he submitted to my urging, slammed his door shut and wrestled with his coat as he followed. He caught up and matched my steps as we arrived at the exit.

‘Where are we going?’

‘It’s only a few minutes away.’

‘Where?’

‘Down here, then across the road.’ We were walking too quickly for a proper conversation. ‘It’s Keynes.’

‘What about him?’

‘In trouble – I think. Come on.’ I tugged at his arm, and we broke into a run.

We stopped by a haberdashery before the junction with Rue Lauriston.

‘Now, tell me what’s going on,’ he said.

‘I think a plan has been laid to harm Mr Keynes in some way.’

‘Harm him – how?’

‘I’m not sure.’ I grabbed his coat and guided him towards the shop window. ‘I’ve seen a group of men… they seemed to be conspiring… to lure him….’

‘You’re not making a lot of sense, Mary.’

The shop was still open, and we were too conspicuous in the light. ‘We need to move into the shadows. Shall we - can we pretend we are a couple?’

‘My pleasure.’ He smiled and crooked his elbow, allowing me to slip in a gloved hand. ‘Sir Basil told me about your meeting this morning.’ I started to respond but stopped myself, and all that escaped my mouth was a puff of air. Now was not the time. I inclined my head as an encouragement to move on, and we strolled down the street until the doorway in Rue Lauriston came into view. I stood with my back to the wall, grabbed the lapels of John’s overcoat and pulled him closer.

‘Not too close; I need to be able to see the other side of the street.’

‘We need to make this convincing,’ he whispered in my ear. I gave him a playful punch on the chest. ‘Seriously, Mary, are we talking mortal danger here or some form of practical joke?’

‘It’s not a practical joke. Wait…’ I noticed two figures walking this way on the other side of the street. One had a long, loping gait that I was sure belonged to Keynes. ‘He’s coming.’

I peered around the other side of John. I couldn’t see either of the hard men.

‘Don’t look behind you. Another ten seconds, and we’ll cross the road and follow him.’

It was the blond young man with Keynes. They were sharing a joke. Animated. Close. Then, I think I understood.

‘Come on, let’s go.’ I took John’s hand and crossed the road. We were only fifteen paces behind Keynes as they headed for the door in Rue Lauriston. Blond man slowed, searched in his pocket and produced a key; smiled, put the key in the door.

‘Stop!’ My voice; harsh, discordant, unexpected, in the night air.

Keynes turned and stared, open-mouthed. Blond man froze, looked at me, glanced left, then right. I let go of John’s hand, walked to Keynes, started to speak - and felt rather than heard the noise – a crack like a whiplash; thin; fierce; brutal. A gunshot. Was I hit? I sensed something on the back of my neck, my shoulders. I turned slowly, all motion sluggish and deliberate. John had fallen, crumpled on the cold paving, mouth wide, shouting; surprised. The noise was faint, distant. I knelt and stretched out my hand, not quite reaching him.

Then, a sudden rush of movement, feeling and hearing. Too quick. Too loud. Blood. I had blood on my hand from John’s wound. Voices shouted. John said something. ‘Gun.’ His gun was in its leather holster. I unfastened it, took the gun, flicked the catch. Then, still kneeling, I swivelled to my right. He was there, one of the hard men, a dark shape, aimed - at me. I pulled the trigger and fired; once, twice, three times. He fell.

I stood. Keynes was motionless. His blond companion ran. Another man stepped out of the shadows and followed him. A dozen yards back in the other direction, a man was on the ground, arms outstretched, and one leg bent under the other. Had I shot and killed him? Me?

I heard footsteps behind. People edged closer, peered at the body. I closed my eyes and clenched my fists to clear my mind so that I could tend John’s wound. He was holding his right shoulder. I knelt and moved his hand. He drew a hard breath and grimaced. The injury was high in his shoulder, and it looked as though the bullet may have broken a bone. Thankfully, there was an exit wound and a fair chance the injury would be clean and free from infection. I lifted my head and shouted, ‘Docteur. Hopital. Rapidement,’ to anyone who would listen. I would have to staunch the bleeding, but what was I to use?

‘John, help is coming. First, I will have to put something on your wound.’ He nodded his head and gritted his teeth. ‘If I can stop the bleeding, you will mend.’

I stood, unbuttoned my coat, then lifted my skirt and tugged at my petticoat. No, that wouldn’t do. I scrabbled in my bag and retrieved a knife. I cut and tore until the bottom half of my petticoat was free. More cutting until I had lengths of cloth I could use to wrap his shoulder. I pulled at the sleeve of his overcoat. No good, I couldn’t do it alone.

‘Help me, Mr Keynes… please.’

Keynes’ body seemed to shudder with surprise at my words. He took off his coat, threw it on the ground and lowered himself on to one knee, so he was able to tug at John’s overcoat and jacket sleeves while I supported his shoulder. After much painful pulling and yelling, I was able to get at the injured shoulder and could see the exit wound.

‘Good news, John. It’s a clean injury.’ He attempted a smile that didn’t quite make it. I looked at Keynes. ‘Brandy or whisky?’ He nodded, produced a small silver hip flask. I dribbled contents on the entry and exit wounds, then handed it to John. He gulped three or four mouthfuls before I prised it from his fingers and returned to Keynes. Then, it was a question of wrapping as tightly as I could around John’s shoulder while trying to minimise his pain.

I finished by tying a rough sling to hold his injured arm. I checked my handiwork, kissed him on the forehead and announced, ‘Bravely done, John. That should do the trick.’

I left the United States to find inner peace. Instead, I find myself confronting a malicious ghost.

Astyr Salt is a spiritual and emotional empath who moved to England with the intent to forget about a traumatic, supernatural event that occurred during her freshman year of college. However, when she takes a spiritual cleansing assignment in a haunted country home in Essex, she is isolated with all her own pent-up emotions.

These emotions energize the ghosts inhabiting the country home, helping them draw their own tragedies to the surface. Searching for the truth, Astyr is forced to relive the past. And the deeper she dives into the country home’s horrific history, the more the intertwined memories place her in the path of an evil and demented predator.

EXCERPT:

My dream from the past several nights continues to haunt my every waking moment. My mind recalling the few details I can remember of the strange, old mansion. The structure consists of unusual hallways that lead to lavish rooms and staircases that dead end at the ceilings or lay sideways along the walls and floors. It reminds me of the Winchester Mystery House in San José, California combined with a M. C. Escher print. In the dream, I wander aimlessly, searching for Nolyn. I never really see Nolyn in the dream, except a glimpse at the very end, where he looks like a ghost. Meanwhile, a presence hovers around my shoulders and neck, hindering my search until I finally reach a dead end. A dark room.

For most, this would just be a repeating nightmare. Many blowing it off as an indicator of stress or anxiety over a possible budding relationship—like my friend and business partner, Kenya. Not for me. Dreams like this tend to be prophesies, and eventually, manifest in the real world. I had a dream repeatedly back in the United States, while I was working at my old job. Three months after I met my office crush, I started having dreams about him. In the dreams, we were sitting at one of the break room tables, trying to get away from the office Christmas party. He was talking about his baby girl and how he was trying to talk his wife into having a second child. At some point, his words became nothing but noise. Yet the words “you’re a great friend” still echoed vividly in my mind. Six months later, in real life, he’d married another woman in our office. And just recently, he announced the birth of their first child on Facebook—a baby girl.

At least those were happy dreams of a happy future, even if it didn’t involve me. As for my current dreams involving Nolyn, I’m concerned. In them, Nolyn is lost, and some force is preventing me from finding him. I wish I had more details. Anything to pinpoint a time or place of the event. Yet, like a labyrinth, it’s all muddled. I can’t find a clear path or any clues that might reveal Nolyn’s location. I’ve tried my seeing bowl, tarot cards, and my psychic tea blends. Nothing has helped.

Only time holds the key.

Returning to reality, I check the clock on the barren, brown wall of the office suite. It’s been an hour since I sat down in one of the stiff, cherry-red upholstered chairs. Half an hour since Mr. Hellings’s administrative assistant, Ms. Poole, placed some tea on the solid oak coffee table. Twinings English Breakfast. Steeped for five minutes in a warm tea pot. No milk. Just a hint of sugar to mellow out the robust flavor. Nolyn would’ve given me that seductive snicker of his if he heard the thoughts in my head right now. He knows I have a passion for tea, which amuses him. But knowing tea is a part of my business. Only my tea blends are meant for the promotion of emotional and spiritual healing, as well as other aspects of life: love, success, psychic awareness. As a practicing witch, the tea pot is my cauldron and the herbs are my special ingredients. Yet Nolyn, as much as he humors me, doesn’t believe in magic. Nor ghosts. Nor spiritual energy. In fact, Nolyn would think this meeting a joke and a waste of time. Especially, if my potential client causes me to be late for my lunch date with him.

His novels speculate on the human condition and explore the fundamental questions of our existence. As a species, as Homo sapiens sapiens – that’s man the twice-wise – how are we doing so far? Where is mankind’s spiritual home? What does it look or feel like? Would we recognise it if we saw it?

Next came the supernatural thriller, The Old Dragon’s Head (Matador, 2018), set in Ming Dynasty China.

His third novel, The Coronation (Matador, 2019), speculates on the genesis of the most important event of the modern world – the Industrial Revolution.

EXCERPT:

It was about time the men in their lives realized that the Sisterhood was a force to be reckoned with. Some ladies wanted more in life than to flutter their fans and bat their eyelashes to attract a man.

She already had a wager with Wolf. Could she out-earn him on one investment in a month? She’d wager her life on the fact that she could make more money in twelve months than he could. But could she make more than all of them combined? Even the brilliant Fane?

“They will be hard to beat. But even if we lose, won’t they be impressed at what we did achieve and that we fooled them?”

“Impressed? Maybe. Angry and humiliated, definitely,” Claire said.

“Well, that means I’m in,” said Ivy.

One by one the eight Sisterhood members agreed to the plan.

“I’m doing the investing,” Tiffany said, “so you ladies can think up the pranks. Remember, this is not only about the pranks. You have to learn what is going on in your brothers’ investments as well as anyone else’s. Most men don’t remember to hold their tongues around women. We are brainless idiots who cannot possibly understand what they are talking about.”

Before anyone could answer, a loud masculine voice came from the entrance hall. Tiffany looked across at Claire, who frowned and began to rise just as the door flew open.

A man stepped into the room, and Tiffany’s heart did that annoying little flip it always did whenever she clapped eyes on Wolf.

His deep burgundy jacket fitted him like a new glove and showed off his broad shoulders to perfection. He was dressed for riding and his Hessians somehow emphasized his powerful thighs.

She noted every inch of him, and her skin prickled with heat as she realized his gaze was taking in every inch of her.

“I see Lady Claire has rallied her troops once more. What on earth are you ladies discussing with such vigor? The latest French fashions perhaps?” His gaze swept across the group.. “A few new dresses might not go amiss.”

As usual in Wolf’s presence, Tiffany’s tongue would not function and she could not think of a scathing retort.

Valora did it for her. “We were discussing what we would wear to Mrs. Buchanan’s soiree. Perhaps a different wardrobe would make us blend in better.”

For one fleeting moment, the big bad wolf’s face showed fear. “Very funny, Lady Valora. Vale has forbidden you from attending. I’m sure once I reveal this ridiculous plan to Marlowe, he’ll do the same to you two,” he said, pointing at Tiffany and Claire.

“Then run along and tattle to Marlowe. Don’t let the door hit your conceited arse on the way out,” his sister Ashleigh said.

His face looked like thunder. “You and Ivy are forbidden to attend.” When they simply looked at him with angelic faces, Wolf added, “I’m warning you.”

At that ridiculous edict the eight women burst into giggles, and Wolf turned his angry gaze on Tiffany. “I’m sure Miss Tiffany won’t want to attend. She has more sense. In fact, I’ve come to request her company for a carriage ride tomorrow afternoon.”

The giggling stopped and all eyes swung her way. Tiffany’s blood boiled in her veins. The cheek of the man. She’d said a slow courtship. This wasn’t slow. How to answer?

“If the weather is fine, the outing would be acceptable. I’ll bring Milly, our lady’s maid.”

“Perfect. If you’ll excuse me, ladies, I shall find Marlowe and leave you to your, er…leave you.”
