Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

I work with aliens, my best friends is held hostage, and everyone wants to murder me before the Lord Prince can magically bond to share my power? If I had known an illegal drone race would lead to murder, kidnapping, and lies, then I might have thought better about the giant prize of credits, and the dream of walking again.I never met my best friend in person until a drone race gone wrong had both of us vying for our lives against a secret alien society. To make matters worse… my boss was one of them, and I couldn’t decide if he was trying to save my life, or the reason I was in trouble to begin with.

He sighed. “The less you know about these people the better.”

So they were mobsters, I confirmed to myself. I mean, anyone hosting an illegal drone race couldn’t be considered a quote unquote good guy, but I hadn’t really thought about it before. I merely liked the extra cash that most of these races provided, but this race was much more risky than anything I’d ever been involved with.

“Got it.”

“If we win the race, you can get through this whole thing without anyone knowing who you are. You keep your mask on, and you stay in the drone assigned to you. It isn’t uncommon for winners to take on a persona, but if you lose you will be forced to pay off your debt, and we don’t want to owe these people, they don’t take credits. You will be forced to join the Drone Guard, as you are now considered one of the top pilots, and that is more valuable than credit.”

“Like indentured service? They can’t do that… can they?”

“They can, and they do, though most are more than happy to devote themselves to the cause.” He smirked at me. “I don’t see you as being a follow orders kind of pilot,” he joked, “If you were, we wouldn’t be here.”

I glared at him. “This isn’t funny. You could have been more upfront and said, ‘Tyler, I know you’re a sucker for illegal drone races, but you’d been getting yourself involved with gangsters. Please sit this one out.’ Would have been a nice heads up.” I lowered my voice and did a horrible impression of his silky deep tone that sounded more like a gruff cartoon character.

He leaned forward and grabbed my hand in his then smoothly said, “Tyler, don’t get involved with illegal drone races. Being as they are illegal, they are usually run by powerful overlords that don’t care about your wellbeing. Please listen to me next time.”

I pulled my hand from his and swatted at him. He laughed, and leaned back into his seat, and this was the most relaxed I’d ever seen him. Which was surprising considering we were going to an evil overlord’s lair and trying to win a drone race to save my friend Kelly from financial ruin, and now make sure I didn’t become an indentured pilot to amoral goons.

“Would that have made a difference,” he asked seriously to me.

I frowned and shook my head. “Probably not. I wouldn’t have believed you.”

“And you believe me now?” He quirked a brow. He was quite handsome when he wasn’t reprimanding me.

“After the cutthroat race to even be here right now, unfortunately yes. Plus,” I stopped and shook my head, changing my mind about telling him how much I was worried that I still hadn’t heard from Kelly. She was the one who even signed us up for this race, and it made me nervous knowing who we were racing for was dangerous. What if she didn’t make it through the first race, and was lying in a ditch somewhere, or worse at the hospital because another racer crashed her into oncoming traffic? Picking at my nail cuticle I flexed my fingers and then dug them into my pant legs to stop myself from picking until I had no more skin to pick.

He watched me expectantly, waiting for me to finish. The way his eyes tore into my soul made me want to tell him all of my secrets, my lip quivered because my insides hurt thinking about anything happening to Kelly. She was all I had when this was all over, at least I hoped I still had her after this was over. Misinterpreting why I was so emotional he nodded and tried to reassure me, “You’ve far surpassed most pilots I’ve seen in this race during training, but fear will help you stay sharp. Let your instincts help protect you when the time comes.”

“My instincts are what I fear most right now.”

Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

The fate of our world rests in their hands.

Hades, god-king of the Underworld, has uncovered the mastermind behind the uprising destined to set his realm and the mortal world on a collision course. But his enemy has gone to ground and finding them is proving impossible, and the longer they elude his grasp, the stronger the darkness within him grows, slowly stealing control.

Persephone, god-queen of the Underworld, can only watch as a storm gathers on the horizon—a deadly war that threatens to strip her beloved family from her. As Hades fights his own battles against their enemy, she fights to keep the darkness within him at bay, never more aware of the danger he would be if she failed to keep it tamed.

But when their enemy strikes out at them from the shadows, dealing a blow that changes the course of the war and incites Hades’s wrath, the leash on the monster within him snaps and he is plunged into the darkness.

And saving this world might no longer be an option.

EXCERPT:

Persephone pushed away from and turned her back on her grim thoughts, refusing to allow the poisonous fears and doubts to cloud her mind and make her believe they were destined to lose this war. To rid herself of them, she focused on her family, shutting out the world around them to give herself a moment’s respite.

The new additions to their family had only made it more wonderful to her. Her sons were all madly in love with incredible women, and her daughter had fallen for one of the most powerful gods in the Underworld. She couldn’t have asked for a better match for Calindria, or for any of her sons either.

If Ares made Megan look small, then Thanatos dwarfed Calindria. The seven-two god loomed a good fifteen inches over her, and even stood four inches taller than Hades. Her lips curled as she remembered how irritated Hades had been when Thanatos had grown taller than he was, and how he had levelled a dark look on Persephone when she had mentioned that it wasn’t only Thanatos who was taller—his twin Hypnos was too.

Her smile became a full-blown grin and her cheeks flushed as she recalled how fiercely Hades had taken her that night, staking a claim on her that had seen them still making love when dawn had come.

Mother.” Ares’s disgruntled voice broke into her thoughts, scattering them. He looked appalled. Possibly disgusted.

She flushed all over again when she noticed the way vines had sprung from the black earth to snake up her legs towards the apex of her thighs, slipping between the layers of her green dress, and pretended she hadn’t seen them.

“Have you seen your father?” she said, her voice even, with not a trace of the embarrassment she was feeling in it.

Ares grunted, “Clearly you need to see him.”

Thanatos shook his head, the picture of a gentleman as he too pretended he hadn’t seen what had happened. “I have not seen my god-king this day. Is he not at Tartarus?”

She silently thanked him for his diplomacy as her cheeks cooled. “No. I cannot feel him there.”

Ares slid her a look, one she caught the meaning behind. She almost scowled at him. She hated that she felt compelled to constantly ‘keep tabs’ on Hades, as Ares put it in his mortal vernacular, but she was worried about him and feared he was vulnerable when alone.

The enemy wanted to open a gate between this realm and the mortal world and then force it to remain open, allowing the two realms to bleed together and form a new one. The easiest way to do that now their sons had closed all but one of the permanent gates was to use Hades’s blood.

His blood had the power to create a gate.

The enemy had gotten hold of it and come dangerously close to opening a gate with it in the past.

They had also come dangerously close to killing him.

Which meant it was perfectly reasonable for her to be concerned when she couldn’t sense him. She hadn’t been able to sense Calindria in all the centuries she had been a captive of their enemy after all. What if Hades was now their captive too?

Her hand drifted to her stomach as the coldness inside her began to spread again, the warmth she had felt from being around her family giving way to it as fear and doubt began to creep into her mind. She hated that feeling. They had faced danger before. This wasn’t the first attempt to destroy their family.

But everything felt so much more uncertain this time, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that they wouldn’t make it through.

That the unthinkable would happen.

Persephone looked at her children and thought about the members of her family who weren’t there with her. Her heart clenched and she struggled to get air into her lungs. The thought that they might be taken from her—she just couldn’t.

It hit her that was what was different this time. She had such a large, wonderful family now and she feared she would lose them all.

That she would lose Hades.

Based on the true story of the free-spirited daughter of Queen Victoria.

Princess Louise’s life is upended after her father’s untimely death. Captive to the queen’s overwhelming mourning, Louise is forbidden to leave her mother’s tight circle of control and is eventually relegated to the position of personal secretary to her mother—the same position each of her sisters held until they were married.

Already an accomplished painter, Louise risks the queen’s wrath by exploring the art of sculpting, an activity viewed as unbefitting a woman. When Louise involves herself in the day’s political matters, including championing the career of a female doctor and communicating with suffragettes, the queen lays down the law to stop her and devotes her full energy to finding an acceptable match for her defiant daughter.

Louise is considered the most beautiful and talented daughter of Queen Victoria, but finding a match for the princess is no easy feat. Protocols are broken, and Louise exerts her own will as she tries to find an open-minded husband who will support her free spirit.

In the Shadow of a Queen is the story of a battle of wills between two women: a daughter determined to forge her own life beyond the shadow of her mother, and a queen resolved to keep the Crown’s reputation unsullied no matter the cost.

ADVANCE PRAISE

  • “Peek into the House of Hanover and view the strength of two women: Queen Victoria and her daughter Princess Louise. This story weaves compassion and conflict into breathtaking and gripping historical detail.”— Julie Wright, author of A Captain for Caroline Gray

  • "Moore crafts an intriguing portrait of the independently minded Princess Louise and her tensions with the English royal family. Moore sets the stage with meticulous research, and she expertly combines fact with fiction, with psychological insights on Victoria's mercurial moods and the impact of her controlling nature. It adds up to a worthy portrait of a woman divided by duty and self-determination."— Publishers Weekly

  • 5 STARS – “I always enjoy Heather Moore’s historical novels. This one did not disappoint! She is impeccable with her research and always does an excellent job of bringing people from the past to life.”— Julia Daines, bestselling author of Haven Cross, and Whitney Award Finalist

My Thoughts

I have not read a historical fiction of royalty in quite some time. I was intrigued when I was offered a copy of the book for review. I knew next to nothing about Queen Victoria and even less about her children, so this was going to be totally new to me.

The story starts in 1861 in England. Princess Louise is 12 years old at the beginning of the story, each chapter has a little blurb in the form of a letter to and from the royalty. Louise was the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Albert. She and her sibling's upbringing were strict with education with the emphasis on cooking, farming, household tasks, and carpentry, which the latter I found kind of odd. She was very artistic from a young age, but because she was a royal, pursuing the arts was not considered. She was allowed to attend an art school thanks to her mother.

The Queen was determined to carry her children off to the proper people. There was a list of royals to choose from but Louise would have none of them. She found little time for the niceties of finding a suitor. It was difficult to find the perfect suitor for her, she insisted that the husbands that she choose would have to live in England, so that left a lot of the royal men not suitable, which was fine in Louise's mind.

Louise was the unofficial secretary to Queen Victoria and that was a job she was well suited to. Prince Albert died and the Queen and all of the family went into deep mourning, so this left a lot of time to pursue her love of art., becoming a prolific sculptor and artist. Louise was best known for her philanthropic endeavors, and she received many honors for her works.

Princess Louise did meet and fall in love with John Campbell, telling her mother that she had no desire to marry a prince and she wanted to marry John. He was heir to the Dukedom of Argyll, Marquess of Lorne. Their marriage was a happy one for a time, then they drifted apart for a while but they persevered and the marriage continues.

I learned a lot about Louise, Queen Victoria, whom I always thought of as a fussy old woman but that could not be further from the truth. She just wanted what was best for her family and her kingdom. She had been deeply in love with Prince Albert and that love was passed down to her children.

I think that the author did a tremendous job in the research and writing, depicting the Queen and her children as a great family, notwithstanding issues, every family has that, even royalty.

I really enjoyed this book, I will be reading more by Heather B.Moore. I give this book 5 stars!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes only.

I write fun, flirty fiction, with feisty heroines, and lots of heart. Writing is fab, because I get to wear pretty shoes instead of wellies. I live in a cottage up the steepest hill in Derbyshire, where my family and pets are kind enough to ignore the chaos. Happily, we're in walking distance of a supermarket. I love hearts, flowers, happy endings, all things vintage, most things French.   Loneliness of the Time Traveller

Description Loneliness of the Time Traveller by Erika Rummel

“It is a dreadful thing to be possessed, to be invaded by a spirit woman who commands your body and soul and looks out at the world through your eyes. It happened to me in 1778. Pray it will never happen to you.”

Adele’s diary tells the story of her domination by an incubus Lynne, a serving girl in a London ale house who died a violent death and commandeered Adele’s body for eight years. Can Adele be held responsible for Lynne’s crimes? Will the evil spirit return and renew her tyranny over Adele’s mind?

Lynne has moved on into the 21st century, but the transmigration has left her emotions flat. Lynne is eager to go back to her first life and experience once more the passion she felt for her lover, Jack. To do so, she needs a channel to the past: the manuscript of Adele’s diary, if only she can find it.

A time-slip novel set in contemporary Los Angeles and 18th century London, The Loneliness of the Time Traveller is a story of love, crime, and adventure combined with fantasy, a little bit of Jane Austen-style irony, and a healthy serving of social criticism.

Review Loneliness of the Time Traveller by Erika Rummel

Review by Laura

“It's the season to slough off my old body and slip into a new sin, to enter new territory. I know the danger, but I can't resist the call.”

A killer new novel about a woman who has lived dozens of lives. Or, should I say, a “spirit.” Most of the time, when I use that term, I might be trying for a metaphor, but in this case the main character of Erika Rummel's novel, 'The Loneliness of the Time Traveller,' actually is a spirit and she actually has lived dozens of lives.

Lynne is a transmigrant, and she can travel into other people's bodies and live inside of them until the bodies are used up. Her first life is as a serving girl in a tavern in the 19th century. At that time, she is murdered, but she soon discovers that her spirit has the ability to inhabit other people's bodies.

Adele Collingwood is her first victim. Adele is a teenager living a very different life from Lynne's down and dirty, gritty London existence. Although Adele's father does not have a lot of money, she often spends time with an aunt and uncle who do, and they offer to send her to a boarding school where she can get a better education.

Reluctantly, Adele's father agrees to let her go, but soon he calls her home and Adele laments being separated from the boy she has feelings for, the headmaster's son. But soon, Adele's father unexpectedly dies and she is so upset that she becomes feverish.

This is where Lynne makes her move. When Adele is at the point of death, Lynne is able to transfer herself into Adele's body, and from then on, they become side-seat passengers in one corporeal form.

This story is a fantastic sci-fi read, and honestly, this isn't even the half of it. The flashes forward to Lynne's current life as she tries to go back to Adele's time were some of my favorite parts of the book. I could not put it down. This story begs to be read and enjoyed!

Guest Post by Erika Rummel

The popularity of time travel novels

H.G. Wells started it all with his 1895 Time Machine, and the genre has been popular ever since. What attracts readers to the subject of time travel? Well, who doesn’t want to look into the future, and if that’s not possible, to imagine it? Or, reversing the course (like Mark Twain in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court) to relive the past and try to change it? There is something fascinating in the relentless forward movement of time and something daunting also in the knowledge that we are caught in its slipstream. There is a 2000-year old Latin proverb that says it all: Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis – Time changes, and we change with it.

Sci-fi novels satisfy our longing to know the unknown by offering us a glimpse of an alternative world, and some Sci-fi writers have shown an uncanny ability to predict the future. Think of George Orwell’s
1984. His forecast was dead on. Big Brother aka the internet is watching us. We no longer have privacy, and Orwell warned us of that kind of world eighty years ago! It’s not surprising that his book has become a classic.

So much for the popularity of futuristic novels with
readers. And why do writers turn to Sci-fi novels? Because it gives them unparalleled leeway to indulge their imagination. Some writers focus on the technical aspects, the gizmos and mechanics of time travel, others not so much. Think of Rip van Winkle, where a long sleep is the simple means of being transported into the future, or the 2011 film “Midnight in Paris” which doesn’t even try to explain the phenomenon of time travel. It just happens. That’s my approach as well. Time travel is an exotic frame on which to hang a story.

My new novel,
The Loneliness of the Time Traveller, is the story of Lynne, a demonic woman who travels through time by successively exchanging her aging body for a younger one and thus living on into the present. I call Lynne an “incubus.” The word (current since the 16th century) describes a demon who descends on sleepers and invades their body to have intercourse with them. In my novel, Lynne descends on comatose, gravely ill victims, invades them and has “intercourse” in the literal sense of the word, that is, mixing with them, becoming one with them, and eventually taking over. What attracted me about that concept was the idea of the split personality. To a certain extent we all have a “demon” living within us who makes us do things our rational selves don’t approve of.

By switching bodies, Lynne moves from 18
th century London to 21st century L.A, but a mysterious painting triggers a tidal wave of nostalgia in her. She yearns to travel back to her first life and be reunited with her first lover. To return to that point in time, she needs to get her hands on an old manuscript, a woman’s memoir, locked away in the safe of a Rare Book Library. If she can pull off the heist, the handwritten pages will serve as her “magic carpet,” a channel to the past.

Most time travel novels move forward into the future. A few do a loop (like the 1993 movie
Groundhog Day) showing the inevitability of fate and proving that you are doomed to repeat your past mistakes. Why did I go for a time-slip novel, set in the present but looking back to 18th century London -- the original home of my time traveller? Because I am a historian by profession and love imagining the past. Throughout my academic career I wrote straight history textbooks, but I’ve entered a new phase. I want to give my writings an imaginary twist. Adding a time-slip element to a historical novel allows me to compare the present with the past and, by the way, get in a little social criticism. How much the position of women has changed! How much dating and sexual mores have changed! But powerful men abusing women? That hasn’t changed at all! A time-slip novel has that handy distancing effect – I can aim a searchlight at the past and find contemporary issues. Read The Loneliness of the Time Traveller and ask yourself: Have things really changed, or is the past still painfully relevant?
