Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Publication date: February 7th 2023

Falling in love with my frenemy? Out of the question.

Easton: For as long as I can remember, I’ve been giving Hanna a hard time—and she’s been giving it right back. So we’re both shocked to find ourselves on the same side of a project: helping Hanna win the heart of the celebrity chef hired by my family’s business to give summer workshops.

It shouldn’t be a big deal. A wardrobe evaluation. A shopping trip. Maybe some how-to-get-the-guy advice. I’m an expert on matters of the heart—or, at least matters of the mattress.

But as Hanna starts to trust me and open up, I see her differently. She’s not so much blunt as refreshingly honest, not so much a plain Jane in baggy clothes as… deliciously curvy. And hidden under that spiky, steely exterior is a soft heart she doesn’t show anyone.

Suddenly, the project includes ogling Hanna in dressing room mirrors. Offering her kissing lessons. And desperately trying not to give in to the sizzling heat between us.

I have to let her know the plan has changed: I’ll still help her get the guy she wants. I just need to somehow convince her that it’s me.

A steamy, opposites-attract, enemies-to-lovers (or is it friends-to-lovers? So hard to tell with these two!), mountain man small-town rom com.

“If I admit I have a crush, will you help me?”

Hanna stands in front of me inside Wilder headquarters a few days after the first Bear trip, arms crossed over one of her ubiquitous baggy sweatshirts. That woman has more baggy sweatshirts than a Walmart.

We’re the last two people left at headquarters tonight. I don’t know what she’s still doing here, but I’m finishing up some paperwork for Bear’s trip. Celebrities don’t have to do their own paperwork.

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

“If I admit I have a crush on Bear Warden, will you help me get the guy?”

“I’m going to pinch myself right now, because if you’re asking me for help, I’m definitely dreaming.”

“You’re not dreaming,” she informs me. “But if you want me to pinch you—”

“Not necessary!” I say, jumping out of her reach. “But I would like you to say the humiliating part again. About how you have a terrible, mad, soul-wrenching crush—”

“I didn’t say any of that.”

“And only I, Easton Wilder, can help you win him over and live happily ever after.”

“Fine,” she says. “I have a terrible, mad, soul-wrenching crush, and only you, Easton Panty-Melter Wilder, have the expertise in lurrrrrvvvving to help me find my way to bliss.”

“That wasn’t quite as satisfying as I’d hoped,” I admit. In fact, the word bliss in conjunction with Bear makes me strangely itchy.

“Seriously, Easton, help me.”

“Help you what?”

“Woo Bear. Get laid.”

“That’s it? That’s your highest aspiration? From the way you were looking at him, I thought it was going to be more like a white wedding and four-point-five kids.”

“Why are kids always measured in halves? It’s so awful to contemplate. Which half would you get?”

“You’re deflecting.”

“True,” she admits.

“You want more than just to have sex with him.”

She scrunches up her whole face—oddly cute—and then relaxes it. “Look,” she says, pointing a finger at me. “I think you know I’ve been on a few dates this year.”

“Rumor had reached me, yes.”

“And that means you probably know that they haven’t been a rip-roaring success.”

In the interest of honesty, I say, “Um. Yeah.”

“Not to get into the nitty-gritty details, but they basically break down into two categories. People who are secretly married, and people who are totally and completely unacceptable for coffee and a sticky bun, let along marriage and procreation.”

“That sounds—unfun.”

“So. Un. Fun.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Here’s the thing. I like Bear. I like him a lot. He’s…”

She hesitates, and I’m a hundred percent sure I don’t want her to finish the sentence, although I’m not sure how I know.

“…really hot.”

Yeah, didn’t need that sentence finished.

Avoiding Swindlers by Al Rosen Book Blast!

Avoiding Swindlers

by Al Rosen

The book deals with actual situations that resulted in investors losing multi-millions of dollars to financial tricksters. Emphasis is placed upon learning how to detect early warning signs. Financial exposure can be minimized prior to situations deteriorating into bankruptcies. However, individual investors have to take specific actions after doing some homework. Otherwise, the alternative is to lose money by listening to "hot tips," often involving publicly traded securities.

Some types of commonly seen but inappropriate financial reporting are permitted in certain countries (including parts of North America), even though they deeply aid the financial tricksters. Governments are seriously neglecting investors by not prohibiting certain reporting trickery. Overall, in some regions, investor protection is simply archaic (including allowing false advertising). Currently, investors face serious risks.

The book attempts to minimize technical language. Stress is placed upon encouraging investors to look for specific warning signs before opening their purses and wallets to the growing group of tricksters.

"Avoiding Swindlers" will change the way you look at Canadian investments.

This book was featured on Publisher Newswire's 2022, "10 Books to Bookmark" list.

CANADIAN IFRS FINANCIAL FIGURES ARE NOT CREDIBLE

Overview

The main objective of this book is to help investors/ savers to shift their reading and learning emphasis to better choose where to invest their money. Swindlers have recently developed several new scams, which are unfortunately being successful against investors. False and misleading advertising is still growing, to support troublesome claims that investor protection has improved. Nonsense.

Such protection claims are contrary to the well-documented reality of increased failed businesses. All a person needs to do is look at the recent collapsing batch of marijuana companies. Bankrupt companies are reality. Sufficient learning about these types of deceptions is simply not adequately occurring. Investor deception issues keep piling up.

More cluing-in is certainly quickly needed. Early detection of dangers has simply become a necessity, or compulsory for all savers. 1 Considerable attention has to be given herein to the dangers that have appeared in countries that are using IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards; really is not “international” when largely not widely utilized by the U.S.A. and other important countries).

IFRS is wide-open to a variety of nasty or investor-scary issues that are examined in the book. How to detect these dangers at their early stage is a priority. As well, other trickery is explained, including several early-detection processes for likely-to-occur con games.

L.S. (Al) Rosen has combined being a university professor (holding a PhD) with several qualifications in the fields of investigative accounting and reporting (such as acting as a fraud examiner) for over 35 years.

He has authored many reports for court cases, and has testified in courts in various countries in many large-dollar cases. Often the allegations are that investors have been deceived by materially misleading financial reports. He has co-authored two previous books, and articles, with his son Mark.

They address how and why multi-million dollars of investor money essentially, and often quickly, vanished. Real situations are the subject of these writings. Money was stolen and hardships resulted.

Mick is a hopeless romantic who was born in England but spent fifteen years roaming around the world in the pay of the late HM Queen Elisabeth II in the Royal Air Force before putting down roots—and realizing how much he missed the travel. This he’s replaced somewhat with his writing, including reviewing books and supporting fellow saga and romance authors in promoting their novels.

He’s the proud keeper of two Romanian Werecats bent on world domination, is mad on the music of the Beach Boys, and enjoys the theatre and humoring his Manchester United-supporting wife.

Finally, and most importantly, Mick is a full member of the Romantic Novelists Association. The Lumberjills is the lead book in this new series from the author of the Broken Wings novels.

The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes Book Review! #TheHouseinthePines #NetGalley

What you can't remember could destroy you...

From an exciting new writer comes a debut thriller in which a young woman must find her way back to a New England cabin, armed with only hazy, haunting memories and a half-written book by the father in Guatemala she never knew, to finally uncover the truth that could save her.

Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, mysteriously dropped dead in front of the enigmatic man named Frank whom they'd been hanging around with all summer.

Seven years later, Maya lives in Boston with a loving boyfriend and is kicking the secret addiction that's allowed her to cope with what happened all those years ago; the gaps in her memories and the lost time that she can’t account for. But her past comes rushing back when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged back into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires postindustrial hometown to relive that fateful summer—the influence Frank once had on her, and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey. And before too long all roads are leading back to Frank's cabin…

Utterly unique and captivating, The House in the Pines keeps you guessing about whether we can ever fully confront the past and return home.

Ana Reyes has an MFA from Louisiana State University. Her work has appeared in BodegaPear NoirThe New Delta Review, and elsewhere. She lives in Los Angeles where she teaches creative writing to older adults at Santa Monica College. The House in the Pines is her first novel.

My Thoughts

The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes is a story about what happens when you lose blocks of time and your best friend.

Maya is the protagonist of the story, when she was in high school, she briefly dated a man called Frank. After she meets him, one day her best friend Aubrey suddenly dies. Why would a young woman with the best of her life in front of her, suddenly die?

Seven years later Maya is still trying to figure this out. No charges were ever filed against anyone, but Maya knows that Frank had something to do with it, so she goes back home from Boston and starts conducting her own investigation of what happened on that fateful night.

Maya is having withdrawals from an antidepressant that she has been on for a while. Not an easy feat. One day she comes across a YouTube video showing a young woman and a man seated in a diner. All of a sudden, the young woman dies, the man she is with? It is Frank her ex-boyfriend. She gets suspicious in that the two girls that died were in Frank's presence.

The reader learns a bit of past history of Maya, her mother, Brenda had gone to Guatemala in her younger years and lived with a family for a while. She becomes close to the son of the family, but their relationship is cut short as he is killed. Then Brenda finds that she is pregnant.

The only thing that Maya has of her father is an unfinished book. Her father aspired to be a writer. The book is a mystery to Maya, she spends time translating it to English. So, with the mystery of her father, how did the two girls die becomes all-encompassing for Maya to figure out.

Told in flashbacks from Maya's time in high school and seven years later, the reader learns more of the story, about Frank and his father, a professor and a mesmerist. The story seemed confusing at first, but it all comes together at the end.

I wasn't expecting this as I started reading the book, but I did thoroughly enjoy it. I give it 5 stars, gave me the creeps.

I received a copy of the book for review purposes.
