Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

The Romanov Heiress
Jennifer Laam

Publication date: March 20th 2023
Genres: Adult, Historical

Four sisters in hiding. A grand duchess in disguise. Dark family secrets revealed…an alternate future for the Romanov sisters from Jennifer Laam, author of The Secret Daughter of the Tsar and The Lost Season of Love and Snow.

With her parents and brother missing and presumed dead, Grand Duchess Olga Romanova must keep her younger sisters safe. The Bolsheviks are determined to eliminate any remaining holdovers from the tsarist regime, hunting down the last Romanovs and putting them to death. Now living in England, the Romanov sisters remain hidden to protect their identities, even as isolation strains their relationships.

But they can’t distance themselves from the world forever.

Olga learns that a peer of the realm has accused the late Empress Alexandra of betraying Russia and her allies during the Great War. Under the spell of the scheming Grigori Rasputin, Alexandra disclosed military secrets to the enemy and pursued a separate peace with Germany. If this rumor becomes history, it will destroy her mother’s legacy and her sisters’ futures.

Disguised as “Olivia,” a wartime nurse turned maid, Olga accepts a position in Lord Hammond’s household. There, she works to discover the truth about her mother. When Olga meets his lordship’s heir—an alluring, enigmatic war veteran—her situation grows even more precarious. Could she fall for the son of her new enemy? As she learns more about the tragedies of his past, Olga realizes the connection between their families is more complicated than it appears.

August 1918

The fugitive lay on her back, bruised limbs pressed flat, hidden alongside her sisters underneath a mound of coarse blankets. As the ambulance rumbled to a halt, gasoline fumes flooded the rear compartment, masking the heavy odor of their unwashed bodies. Her breathing grew labored. She didn’t know where they were or who had stopped them. She only knew they must not make a sound.

Over the past weeks, they moved slowly through land held by the Bolsheviks. Every evening at dusk, they ate carefully rationed portions of tinned meat and dry wafers while their two saviors—agents from England with forged papers identifying them as officers of the Red Guard—checked the radio transmitter for word of Allied progress toward the northern ports along the White Sea. Then, during the scant hours of darkness afforded by the short summer nights, they traveled a tortuous course to avoid military checkpoints.

Bundled in tattered sweaters, Olga and her three sisters were gaunt. Their neglected hair hung limp about their shoulders. But their faces once adorned postcards, calendars, and boxes of fancy chocolates. If detained, they would be recognized at once.

The missing daughters of the tsar.

Anastasia’s warm body pressed closer, trembling as she tensed her jaw and tried to stifle a cough.

A terrifying scenario unfolded in Olga’s mind. Thick boots pounded on the roadway before soldiers with red stars tacked to their lapels tossed the blankets aside and dragged Olga and her sisters back into the hellish world they’d been so desperate to escape. What if this journey had been for nothing? Worse than nothing because they had left their parents and sick little brother, Alexei, behind.

Olga was twenty-two years old and the eldest. It fell on her to get them through this nightmare, no matter the outcome.

She felt around until she located her youngest sister’s hand. She held it tight, flinching at the hard calluses and pus leaking from an erupted blister on the pad of Anastasia’s thumb.

Deep masculine voices, muddled and indistinct, rumbled outside. The fingers of Olga’s free hand balled into fists, rage displacing fear. The Bolsheviks may have stolen everything she held dear, but Olga would confront them as a true Romanov. Unbroken. When they raised their revolvers, she would hold her head high and ensure her face haunted these traitors for the rest of their lives.

The back door of the old field ambulance creaked open. Tentatively, Olga drew the blanket down. After hours of near-darkness, sunlight momentarily blurred her vision. When Olga released Anastasia’s hand and sat upright, a cool breeze caressed her forehead.

Before her stood a broad-shouldered gentleman of about fifty, with black brows, a full beard flecked with gray, and brown eyes behind wire-framed spectacles. The man wore a khaki tunic, as Papa had during the war. The coat’s golden buttons and belt buckle gleamed in the morning sun.

“Your imperial highness.” The gentleman removed his hat and bowed his head. He had spoken in English. She assumed he was the commanding officer. A half-dozen other men stood behind him, each dressed in the same khaki uniform. Some rose on tip-toe to get a closer look at Olga.

None bore a red star on his lapel.

Her sisters emerged from under the blankets. They pressed her shoulders, exhalations warm on the back of her neck.

“I think he’s in charge.” Tatiana, the second eldest, whispered in Olga’s ear. “And waiting for you to speak first.”

A spark of hope ignited in her heart, yet Olga didn’t trust these strangers. It had been far too long since anyone outside her family had shown her kindness or respect. For months, they had been kept under constant watch: shoved about, subjected to barking orders and humiliating whims, and made to feel they clung to life by the thinnest of threads. Olga remembered the defeated expression on her little brother’s face when she’d said goodbye for the last time. Even her once proud father bent under the weight of captivity.

Their saviors, the two men who had rescued them from that nightmare, rounded the vehicle and walked toward the soldiers, broad smiles brightening their ruddy faces.

And then the words fell from Olga’s tongue easily, as Mama had always preferred to speak English with her family. “We are here then? We’ve made it to British soil?”

“We have delivered you to Arkhangelsk. From here, you will be transported to your new home.”

“We are in your debt, sir.”

Olga waited because she knew he would say more. There had to be more. While they had been rescued, their parents and brother remained imprisoned in Ekaterinburg, along with a handful of loyal servants.

“You will return for the others, won’t you?” she said, heart thumping. “My family. Our doctor. My mother’s maid. You must promise.”

The officer held her gaze. “The Bolsheviks fortified their defenses around the city’s perimeter. We can’t send our agents back to the house.”

Faced with those terrible words, Olga couldn’t bring herself to ask anything else. Couldn’t bear to hear it was too late. Her stomach churned, but she must not break. Not here. Not yet. As the eldest, she needed to stay strong. For her sisters.

When Olga said nothing more, the officer turned back to his men. Three soldiers joined him, lining up before her sisters to help them out of the ambulance.

“I know you are in pain,” the officer told her. “Remember that you and your sisters are safe. You survived. And we have done everything in our power to find a secure place for you. I promise.”

Publisher:  CamCat Books
Release date:   Feb, 2023
Content Rating:  PG-13 + MThere's adultery, language, some sexual content, and violent crime, but no explicit descriptions of the crimes.

Some killers are born. Others are made.
As a rookie tabloid reporter, Jenna Sinclair made a tragic mistake when she outed Denny Dennison, the illegitimate son of an executed serial killer. So she hid behind her marriage and motherhood. Now, decades later, betrayed by her husband and resented by her teenage daughter, Jenna decides to resurrect her career—and returns to the city she loves.

When her former lover is brutally assaulted outside Jenna’s NYC apartment building, Jenna suspects that Denny has inherited his father’s psychopath gene and is out for revenge. She knows she must track him down before he can harm his next target, her daughter.

Meanwhile, her estranged husband, Zack, fears that her investigative reporting skills will unearth his own devastating secret he’d kept buried in the past.

From New York City to the remote North Fork of Long Island and the murky waters surrounding it, Jenna rushes to uncover the terrible truth about a psychopath and realizes her own investigation may save or destroy her family.

Joanna Elm is an author, journalist, blogger, and attorney. Before the publication of her first two suspense novels (Scandal, Tor/Forge 1996); (Delusion, Tor/Forge/1997), she was an investigative journalist on the London Evening News on Fleet Street in the U.K. She also wrote for British magazines like Woman’s Own.

Then, she moved to New York where she worked as a writer/producer for television news and tabloid TV programs like "A Current Affair." She was also the researcher/writer for WNEW-TV’s Emmy-award-winning documentary "Irish Eyes." In 1980, she joined the Star as a reporter, eventually becoming the magazine’s news editor and managing editor before moving to Philadelphia as editor of the news/features section of TV Guide.

After completing her first two novels while living in South Florida, (Nelson DeMille described Scandal as “fresh, original and unpredictable”) Joanna returned to New York, enrolled in law school, graduated summa cum laude, passed the NY Bar exam, and worked as a principal law clerk for an appellate division justice in the prestigious First Department. She has been married to her husband Joe for 35 years and has one son.

My Thoughts
Jenna Sinclair, as a rookie reporter, outed Denny Dennison, the son of a serial killer. Because of the story, his pregnant wife gets rid of the child she is carrying, fearing that her child could inherit the serial killer tendencies from Denny's father. Jenna flees from the consequences and hopes to stay hidden behind her marriage.

She is married to Zack King and has a daughter Dollie. Dollie has some teen angst and ends up on the wrong side of the law. Zack is the owner of a successful Inn. Soon Jenna feels that Denny is after her, to get even with her for ruining his marriage.

Back up a bit, when she did the article, she was having an affair with Ryan MacAllister, her boss at the time. Decades later she comes across Ryan again, they go to dinner, and they continue their affair, he leaves, and gets assaulted outside her home. He is severely injured and in a coma.

Jenna's marriage to Zack is strained, some because of the issues with the daughter and some from her feelings for Ryan and the fact that she thinks Zack is having an affair. Plus, she is starting to think that Denny is after her, she wants to know so she starts digging into Denny's past and present. Wondering the whole time, can a person become a serial killer if it is in the genes?

Each chapter is told by different characters, going back 20 years, Between Zack and Jenna, the story comes full circle, she feels that she is in danger but from who? A woman is missing, is she a victim of Denny? We learn the backstory of Zach. Who is he really?

I think this novel is exciting, fast paced, and very twisty, and the ending? Wow, I did not see it coming. Told by an author who definitely knows her stuff, using her journalism skills to write this fantastic book. I love a good mystery and this one is up there with the best!

Excerpt

Donald sees Cartan approaching the ring. He nudges Lorcan and says, “Keep him occupied, I’ll make sure Fergus disappears.”  He runs towards the stables but can’t find him anywhere.

Cartan sees Lorcan’s unmistakeable long, lanky figure and strides purposefully towards him.

“You here Lorcan, what are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same. Why shouldn’t I be here? If you must know, I’ve been looking at the horses. Laird Donald wants a destrier, he asked for my advice.”

“Ah, any particular horse in mind? I’m looking for one myself.”

Lorcan tips the end of his nose. “Now that would be telling, wouldn’t it?” An idea forms in his mind. “Must go, I’ve business to attend to.”

He leaves Cartan standing at the ringside and ambles leisurely towards the stables.

Donald is amongst a mass of people, “I can’t find him. He must’ve seen Cartan and disappeared himself,” he tells Lorcan.

“Good. Now listen, I’ve got a plan. When the destriers are auctioned, bid for Lockwood until I rub my nose.”

“Lockwood? I thought we’d agreed on Thunderbolt.”

“Aye, I’ve no time to explain, trust me.” Lorcan finds Tormey and tells him to speak to the auctioneer. “Get him to auction Lockwood in third place, and Thunderbolt right at the end, I’ll explain later. Oh, and ask Hamish to do a demonstration on Lockwood before the bidding.”

Tormey looks a little surprised as Lorcan rushes off again, but he knows him well enough to do as bid without asking questions. Next, Lorcan goes around the ring until he finds Old Mac from the village.

“You and your friends bid for Lockwood till I pull my left earlobe.

The drinks are on me tonight.”

“Oh, right you are, leave it up to me.”

Satisfied that his plan could succeed, Lorcan takes place at the ringside and watches the sales. The auctioneer calls for attention and announces that the highlight of the fair was imminent, the auction of this year’s destriers. Eight horses are trotted around the ring whilst the auctioneer praises their compact and well-muscled build, their skill, and their swiftness, before they file out again. The first two horses achieve prices over four hundred gold pieces. Lorcan notices with satisfaction that Cartan doesn’t bid, but turns his head constantly between himself and Donald like a ball game. Hamish enters the ring riding Lockwood. Tall and majestic the powerful animal strides out with confidence. He has an elegant gait, a refined head, and an arched neck. His white coat is glossy, and his mane and tail plaited. Loud, “Oohs and aahs” accompany his movements.

Lockwood doesn’t bat an eyelid at the noise. Hamish lets him jump over two smouldering sheaves of hay. The spectators applaud. Then Hamish steers Lockwood to the middle of the ring. He demonstrates a leg yield with Lockwood moving forwards and sidewards; lifesaving on a battle field. Finally, he canters the full length of the ring, pulls Lockwood up briskly and lets him turn a pirouette to face the opposite direction. Then he trots again to the centre and rears up on his hind feet.

The applause makes Hamish’s ears ring. As he exits, the bidding begins.

The auctioneer has his instructions and begins at four hundred. Donald raises his hand, followed quickly by Cartan and Old Mac and his mates. In a matter of minutes, the bidding has reached eight hundred and fifty. Lorcan pulls his left ear lobe and Old Mac, and his friends drop out of the bidding, shaking their heads sadly.

“Eight hundred and eighty, who’ll give me eight hundred eighty?” the auctioneer bellows.

An awed silence falls over the ring. A collective holding of breath and eager expectation. The price is ridiculous, even for such a grand animal. Donald looks at Lorcan anxiously, but failing to see him rub his nose, nods to the auctioneer. The spectators let out their breath simultaneously. Lorcan grins at Cartan triumphally.

“One thousand!” Cartan shouts. A shocked silence, then enthusiastic applause.

Lorcan rubs his nose and Cartan sneers arrogantly as no one else raises his bid.

Lorcan turns on his heels quickly, and stumbling twice over stones that hadn’t been there before, rushes into the tack room. He shuts the door behind him and collapsing on a bale of straw, thrusts his fist into the air. It was a small victory but a gratifying one. Donald enters, followed by Tormey and Hamish.

“By me God, I nearly wet my truis there!” Donald exclaims. Tormey laughs and slaps Lorcan on his shoulders.

“Well done,” he says to Hamish. “You did us proud.”

“Aye, that was magnificent lad,” Donald says and Lorcan nods in agreement.

“What’s he doing now?” he asks.

There is no need to call him by name, everyone knows who he’s talking about.

“Paying the bailiff, emptying his purse,” Tormey grins wickedly. “By God, I hope that shoe holds till he’s back in Ireland. Mind you, I’d love to see his face when it falls off and he sees what’s below it.”

“Or rather the horn that’s not below it,” Lorcan grins wickedly.

“Well come on, no time for dithering, we’ve got a horse to buy.” “Oh yes, Thunderbolt, I nearly forgot!” Donald says.

Outside, the spectators are in a festive mood. When Cartan leaves with Lockwood to return to the port, a huge cheer goes up. The sale of Thunderbolt, a handsome dappled grey stallion with an unusual black mane and tail, is almost an anti-climax in comparison. Donald gets him for a fair five hundred and twenty gold pieces.

The fair is over, and everyone goes to the tavern to celebrate. Laird Douglas pays for food and drink; the evening is long. Just one person is missing, Fergus.

Goodreads / Amazon

The voice in my head hummed a tune with ancient words. The somber melody rose an octave higher and dipped lower. A song of death, a song of horror and grief, and yet beautiful and profound, like the voice, raw and pure.

“I’m here. What do you want?” Why was I talking to the water?

I wrapped my arms around my chest when the breeze blew harder, water slamming against the walkway. Perhaps a warning of something terrible to come.

“Idrisa.” It sang my name, a soft tune filling my mind with bliss.

“Why is my lantern black? Why have you put it in front of me?” I shouted, desperate for answers.

Something glowed inside the lake, the size of an orb at first, then illuminated brighter and closer, like the birth of a new star. I threw my arms up to protect myself but the glow shifted, and then split into an image of three women.

Their long, silver hair and flowing white dresses blazed like milky fire, and brilliant light shone where their faces should be. I couldn’t stare without blinding myself.

“We welcome you, Idrisa. Do not be afraid. We are the Eternal Mothers,” they said in unison. Their voices sounded in my head like a hypnotic and celestial chorus.

My heart lurched to my throat. I curtsied, awed and humbled they’d appear before someone like me. Surely there was a mistake.

“What do you want with me?” I asked, my voice shaky.

“You are the light and the dark of this world. Within you lies strength, courage, and hope. Your time has come.” The Lady in the middle held a beaming sword that hadn’t been there before.

The sword rose from the lake, no doubt a hallucination. I shivered, an icy blast of wind nearly knocking me back as mist sprayed over my face. I didn’t know how deep the lake reached. If I fell, I doubted I could swim in the freezing water.

“I am Eternal Mother Viviane, the voice of all. I present to you, Caliburn.” The white light from the blade, like a thousand diamonds blessed with inner fire, beckoned me to reach out for it.

Your time has come? “What do you mean? Is it my time to die?”

“The truest of hearts and the blood of the firstborn, to restore the balance from once torn. Kingdoms shall rise and fall and empires alike, but only the blessed ones can save them all. You must live, Idrisa. You must fight. Most of all, you must have faith and accept your destiny. Now, take Caliburn and run.”

Before I could ask more questions, rapid footsteps vibrated on the walkway.
