The Secrets of Hickory Hollow by FA Shepherd

The Secrets of Hickory Hollow revolves around the history of the lives of rugged Scottish pioneers that settle in an isolated southern Appalachian Mountain valley. Over the years their little settlement grows and establishes itself as an independent community complete with a church, a school, and government policies and laws of its own. During the mid to late 1940's in the aftermath of WW II the residents of Hickory Hollow are caught up in the changing times that lead their lives and the community into an intricate web of lies, deception, crimes and greed. A sheriff that dispenses justice with his heart instead of the law, a G Man with his own ideas about history and a Cherokee half breed copes with revenuers, Nazis, murder and some of the communities own prejudices to restore Hickory Hollow back to the quiet little crossroads bedroom community it once was.

From the Inside Flap

Front Flap
Sam I still have a lot of unanswered questions about that wreck Frank said. I got too involved with trying to find a murderer and never did answer what was Adams doing on that mountain? Heading back to Fort Riley Sam said. If that was the case why wasn't he somewhere down around Knoxville heading west? Heading north on highway 23 is not on the way to Kansas. He wasn't headed back to Kansas he was on his way to see someone. I'm going back to Fort Riley. I need to talk to that 506th battalion S1. What about Sam wanted to know? I want to see Sergeant Adams 201 file. What are you looking for Sam asked? I want to see who was the beneficiary of his insurance? Why are you doing this Frank, Sam asked? I guess it's the image of that soldier standing on the edge of the tarmac saluting that plane Frank said. He reminded me of another sergeant I once knew. He was the acting platoon leader of my 2nd platoon and drug me to safety when that mortar shell damn near tore my leg off. After dragging me to safety and seeing that the medics were taking care of me he went back and was killed leading his platoon on an attack of that German mortar position. His action broke the back of the German counter attack and saved many more lives than just mine. He didn't have to get back in that fight. He could have stayed with me where it was safe. He left a wife and son and I never got the chance to thank him. I can't bring him back but I can find out who Sergeant Adams was going to see and maybe bring some closure for them.

Back Flap
No one knew if that family was in the house at the time of the fire but they weren't seen after that. Ben told me that happened more than thirty years ago. I did find out why something that happened so long ago was being looked into now. A Negro couple from Detroit came through Clouds Corner on their way to Florida and tried to spend the night at the motel. They were told no rooms were available when it was obvious no one was staying there that night. They reported the incident to the NAACP and they sent someone down to check it out. Did Ben tell you who went with Jim that night Sam asked? Yes he did Frank said. Sam there is no evidence to support what he told me. What are you trying so hard not to tell me Sam asked? Ben said it was Preston McCloud and Charlie McNabb. My Dad Sam whispered? Long time before you were born Frank said. There's nothing that says I have to put everything Ben told me in that report. I'm thinking on just saying according to rumors some black families were burned out because a white man accused one of them of raping his wife. There was no investigation of that incident until now and no evidence of a rape. My conclusions are a black man was accused unjustly and because of racial conditions that existed in Unicoi County at the time the community reacted to their emotions and took the law into their own hands. Due to the passage of time between when the alleged rape and reactions to it took place and now, and the fact that all but one or two witnesses are long dead the truth of what really happened may never be known.
