Millennium Slave by Sijuan King Review
Trust is a costly thing, a thing only fools can afford...
New York City, NY 2003: As the newly appointed CFO of one of the world's leading financial firms, Charles Allen Hart is living the good life. With his promotion, he is offered an eight-day Caribbean cruise aboard the company's luxurious 200-foot yacht, which he eagerly accepts. Sailing with him are some of the company's rising stars, but more importantly Trudy Henderson, the love of his life. The night she agrees to marry him, life couldn't get any better.
Two nights after the yacht leaves New York Harbor, it mysteriously disappears into the Atlantic. After an exhaustive search, all passengers are declared dead.
Miami, Florida 2010: A small motorboat washes ashore near an upscale beachside community. Onboard are billionaire Robert R. Chandler V. and his grandson Robbie; both have been victims of a vicious attack. The perpetrator, they tell the authorities, is one Charles Allen Hart.
Now on trial for kidnapping and attempted murder, Charles must relive the horror of the past seven years of captivity on a secret island. An island owned by powerful men that run some of our country's largest corporations, and even our government. As he fights to save his life and the lives of those left behind, he can only pray the jury will believe the unbelievable.
"My name is Charles Allen Hart, and I am a runaway slave..."
About the author Sijuan King:
Growing up in the shadow of Don King would intimidate almost anyone, but Sijuan saw an opportunity to showcase her talent. One day, 18-year-old Si took a train to New York City, arrived on her uncle's door-step, and announced that she wanted to be an entertainer. He smiled, embraced her and told her if she ever changed her nose, he would disown her.
Si has always dreamed big, and she never shies away from the hard work necessary to make those dreams a reality. For Sijuan King, success has never been an "if", but a "when". From an early age, her wide range of creative talent was apparent for her very loving and supportive family.
At seven years old, her family would gather to hear her comedy routine, complete with corny jokes and a famous Daffy Duck imitation.
At age 11, she was invited to join a female singing group with young ladies much older than she. Group members even had to sneak her into the local nightclub through the backdoor. Once inside the club, Si would don a gigantic afro wig and drape an evening gown over her Olive Oyl frame, before taking center stage to belt out "You've Got the Best of My Love" by The Emotions.
As Si grew up, she pursued her other dreams with the same fervor. After receiving her Master's in Business Administration, she moved to Las Vegas, where she owned and operated two successful businesses: one of the city's busiest bakeries, and a Sports and Entertainment company. She also found time to raise a family of her own.
But another dream has remained a constant in her life: her dream of writing her own books. Now she has brought that dream to fruition with the release of her first novel, Millennium Slave: Part I.
And this is only the beginning; she is already hard at work writing Millennium Slave: Part II, which is due to be released in early 2012. She also has several other novels planned.
As her Uncle Don would say, "Only in America!"

My Thoughts:
Sijuan King, debut author of Millennium Slave has told a truly amazing story. What starts out as a getaway cruise to a Caribbean island for Charles Allen Hart and Trudy Henderson turns out to be an unbelievable nightmare. Wined and dined then locked up in a cage for transport to an island that time seems to have forgotten. An island where slavery is the norm and where the inhabitants of the island do not know that it is no longer the the late 1800's. The story is an interesting look at what slavery was like and how the greed of the white men portrayed perpetuated the continuation of black slavery as it was. The story is told in court where Charles is on trial for attempted murder and kidnapping. A story that most people would find impossible to believe. I am not sure if I would believe if someone told me something like this. Is Charles guilty or not guilty?? Well I guess we will have to read Part II to find out. I for one definitely look forward to reading the rest of the story. Sijuan King is a gifted storyteller. I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it be read by all people no matter what their race.
I received a review copy of this book from Ms. King and was not monetarily compensated for my review.
