SYNOPSIS
A tale of love and espionage from the author of Midwife of the Blue Ridge...
She spies for General Washington, betrays the Redcoats and battles for America's independence...
It's 1777, and a fledgling country wages an almost hopeless struggle against the might of the British Empire. Brought together by a fateful kiss, Anne Merrick and Jack Hampton are devoted to each other and to their Patriot cause. As part of Washington's daring network of spies, they are ready and willing to pay even the ultimate price for freedom.
From battlefields raging along the Hudson, to the desperate winter encampment at Valley Forge and through the dangerous intrigue of British-occupied Philadelphia, Anne and Jack brave the trials of separation, the ravages of war and an unyielding enemy growing ever more ruthless.
For love and for country, all is put at risk-and together the pair must call upon their every ounce of courage and cunning in order to survive.

My Thoughts:
Anne Merrick and her maid Sally take on dangerous missions as spies for the American fight for independence from the British. They join the British campaign along the Hudson River to infiltrate and obtain valuable information to take back to General George Washington. Anne feels very strongly about finding ways to get the British off American soil, that she risks her life time and again. The man she loves, Jack Hampton, is also a spy and they are kept apart more than they are together but when they are together the sparks do fly.. Other characters such as Anne's brother David and of course the spitfire Sally nicely round out the cast of characters. I am usually not a fan of American Historical novels but I really did enjoy this one. Christine Blevins telling of this important time in American history is remarkable and a very easy read and does not read like a history book as some historical's tend to do. I had not read the first book in this series but that did not take away any understanding of what was going on from events from Anne and Jack's earlier life. I highly recommend this book for the historical novel lover... I hope that there will be another so that I can find out what happens with Anne and Jack and their further escapades.

I agree Steph..for historical fiction I mostly read England or Irish/Scottish..This was a good bood though. Worth the read..
ReplyDeleteWhy John Adams, of course! I used to think George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were the bomb until I learned so much more about John Adams and now he is my hero from that time period. Plus, he was an avid reader. A kindred spirit indeed. What a wonderful pen pal he would make.
ReplyDeletethanks for the giveaway, Kathleen!
