Adam Donatello and Nina Morales share an immediate and powerful attraction, and their future together seems assured. But love is difficult enough without adding complications – real or imagined – to the mix. Nina sees life as a thousand shades of gray, while Adam tends towards black-and-white. He wants to move fast; she needs time. Nina sees her past liaisons with women as immaterial to their relationship, while her disclosure drives Adam to a state of irrational jealousy. He doesn't know how he could compete with a woman; and his suspicions – which Nina views as hypocritical – lead them both to make decisions they may live to regret.

Excerpt
On the way home I stopped to get a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne and a dozen miniature roses in assorted pastel colors. I put the champagne in the refrigerator to chill and lined up the roses to lead from the front door directly to the toilet. Nina always had to pee as soon as she got home, so I figured we could kill two birds with one stone.
I thought it was a cute idea; Nina agreed.
I thought it was an idea worth executing. Nina not so much.
“I have to go and I want to go in peace,” she said.
“But what if you don’t have to pee later?”
“I’m a girl. I always have to pee.”
She walked past me, handed me a CVS bag, and closed the bathroom door. I opened the bag and found the home pregnancy test kit. I plopped onto the couch and read the directions with the kind of focus and intent I used to reserve for final exams. Then I read them again.
Nina opened the door. “I had a hunch that’s what you’d be doing.” She sat next to me and grabbed the box out of my hands.
“It says we’re supposed to wait until morning when your urine is most concentrated,” I said.
“Okay, first off. I don’t want to hear any more discussion about my pee and my urine.”
“They’re actually the same thing.”
“Thanks for that brilliant insight. But let’s not turn into crazy people about this. I think it’s a good idea we wait until the morning.”
“How could that possibly be good? It’s all I’ve been thinking about and talking about all day.”
“What do you mean you’ve been talking about it?”
I knew I stepped in a steaming pile of shit, but there was no going back. “I was excited so I mentioned it to Mark.”
“Adam, Adam, sweet Jesus Adam, you don’t do that,” said Nina. “Even if I am pregnant, we don’t tell anyone until after I see a doctor, and we make sure everything is okay. You don’t just go out blabbing about the fact that your girlfriend might be pregnant.”
