The Poisoned Banquet by Anthony James Spotlight! @ipbv4c

This is a contemporary Othellian tale, set in present in UK and the USA. The book confronts the issues of a battered and sexually exploited wife who, in this case, is a beautiful and talented celebrity. The story contrasts the greed and corruption of big business with the devotion and dedication of the world of classical music.

The book certainly has erotic content, though it was not undertaken as a primarily ‘erotic work of fiction.’ Rachel, the heroine, strives to succeed in the competitive world of classical music as a concert pianist that is, in its way, as competitive and ruthless as the world of big time merchant-banking.

The book moves from the haunting opening where the eight-year-old Michael is present at the death of his baby sister by drowning. There is ambiguity here; was the child pushed or did she fall? We follow the boy as he grows up to be a very successful man who graduates from Cambridge where he meets the glamorous and gifted Rachel. The couple marry and the novel picks up the intensity as it involves the reader in the competitive race and the sexual tension between the main characters. Love, alas, does not conquer all as Michael becomes more and more jealous and tormented. Despite their wealth, glamour, and beauty the couple consume each other.

The conclusion is dramatic and profoundly sad. The background of the psychology of morbid jealousy has been meticulously researched. Commercially the book will appeal to a wide adult audience, both male and female.
