However, the Baron himself is brutally murdered and Stoker fears that they may be being set-up to take the fall, he and Veronica elude the authorities. Aided by her sharp wit (and tongue), the hirsute Stoker, and a well-placed hatpin, Veronica flees London. However, there are still mysterious men trying to single her out. And Stoker, keeping his oath to the Baron, tries to keep her safe at any cost. What follows is a series of adventures involving noble families, harrowing boat escapes,a stuffed mouse, and a traveling freak show.
As Veronica and Stoker get closer to uncovering the Baron’s killer, more details emerge about how this is related to Veronica, as there is still a threat to her safety. And that threat is tied to her true parentage.

My Thoughts
This is the first book I have read by Deanna Raybourn and I am glad that this book is the first in a new series. That way I can start off enjoying a new storyline. Veronica Speedwell is not a typical woman in Victorian England, nothing uptight or straitlaced about her. She is a lepidopterist, a collector of butterflies, and has traveled around the world. After her last remaining aunt's funeral, she is contacted by Baron von Stauffenbach, who tells her she is in danger but won't say by whom or why.
Not giving away too much of the story, I will say I love the characters in this story especially Veronica, she is fiesty, sure of herself and what she wants out of life and is not going to let anyone get in her way especially when her life could be in danger. A Curious Beginning is sure to please the mystery or historical fiction fan. Characters good and bad, written with a comedic flair but also suspenseful. I definitely look forward to the next in the series, A Perilous Undertaking Book #2
