CHAPTER 7

BUBBA: STUCK IN THE MUD

 

The thief had struck again. I re-counted to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I didn’t. Sixteen artifacts sat on the table, not seventeen.

“What’s missing?” Esperanza asked.

“An arrowhead,” Squirt said. “There were three, and now there are two.”

“What do we do?” I asked.

“Find Papi,” Esperanza said. “He needs to know.”

Squirt picked up an arrowhead and fingered its edges. “You’re right. The thief could be one of the archeologists. If your dad knows, he can help us keep an eye on everyone.”

“Okay,” I said. “Who do you think it is? José? He looks like a pirate.”

“What?” Esperanza’s voice shot up as high as her eyebrows. “No way. José wouldn’t do that!”

Squirt shrugged and put the arrowhead down. “It could be anyone. We need to pay attention, but not make it obvious. We can’t let anyone know we’re on to them.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Esperanza said. “Vamonos. Let’s go.”

We followed her out of the tent. I looked up. 

Black clouds swirled overhead as the wind howled. Drops of rain splattered against my arms. The storm was about to let loose.

Señor Raymundo spotted us. “Hurry up! We need to get out of here.”
