Going over to her neatly styled marble desk, she opened her laptop and googled Lucas Braxton. An image appeared and her heart sped up. He stood aboard a sailing vessel with the sun behind him, shirtless with low-slung shorts, smiling for the camera. His lean, perfectly sculpted body looked almost bronze and his dark hair fell over his handsome face. Looking closer at the grainy image, she couldn’t quite make out the tattoo on his upper chest. She bet that the paparazzi took the shot and uploaded it without his knowledge.

Clicking on the next image, she saw that he was dressed in business attire, angled away from the camera, and there was something reluctant about his stance, almost as if he didn’t have any use for the larger world or talking to mere mortals. Maybe he was more interested in numbers than human connection.

She pulled up another photograph. She resisted swooning over his deep-set brown eyes, prominent cheekbones, and square jawline with a hint of five o’clock shadow. His nose was straight and powerful, reminding her of a warrior. She smiled at her wayward thoughts and told herself that it didn’t matter what he looked like.

But he had a sexiness about him that was difficult to dismiss and he seemed vaguely familiar. They had crossed paths at some event or social gathering. She had seen him near the bar and wanted to seek him out, but when she did, he had disappeared. She couldn’t remember if Nicholas was with her that particular evening, but he had often taken issue with her being too friendly or open.

Perla closed her laptop and dismissed the memory. Lucas Braxton would want her to let his relative walk away unscathed and she’d resist. At the core of this mess was an issue of fairness. The article that had been posted didn’t tell the truth about the congressman. It was meant to harm his reputation and it had succeeded.

Deciding not to put on her suit jacket, she took a sip of water and waited. She wanted to appear relaxed and in control, even if this unfortunate incident brought Lyman News to its knees.

As her oldest daughter graduated college, Susie took the creative leap and began writing full-time. She now has nearly a dozen published novels and the ideas for countless more.
