'Speakeasy' by Elyse Douglas is a stunning and enveloping novel, that whisks the reader back to a time of flappers and gangsters.
The 1920's were an interesting time for America. Prohibition had taken over the country, jazz music was all the rage and the cities were just starting to see a new kind of criminal-- mafia bosses who controlled large swaths of the city. These are all things that the main character of 'Speakeasy' has to contend with right away as she is launched back into the past via a hidden portal in the basement of a bar.
In 2019, Roxie Raines takes a temporary singing gig at a 1920's themed bar called Speakeasy. But while attempting to chase off an intruder, she accidentally stumbles upon a strange blue door in the basement. Upon going through the door, she is instantly transported to the 1920's, where she ends up in a strange alleyway outside of a bar.
It turns out that the bar is owned by a local gangster called Frankie Shay, who, paranoid as criminals tend to be, decides to hold Roxie prisoner until she can prove to him that she is not a government spy. Thrown into a world that she doesn't understand, and trying desperately to get back to her own time, Roxie must face the trails and tribulations of a woman in the 1920's by herself.
That is, until she meets a handsome private detective by the name of Jake Kade, and manages to enlist his help. Will Roxie be able to get back home? This is a question that you're going to have to read the book to find out. I would never spoil it!
This is a five-star read and one that should be experienced by anyone who loves a time travel book!
