“I’d like to apologize for my behavior last night.”
Her breath hitched. “You didn’t need my opinion on a project, did you?”
Sheepishly, he cast her an apologetic look. “Sorry to bring you here on false pretenses.”
She tensed, leaning deeper into the chair, the only direction that increased the distance between them. Nicholas had a reputation—didn’t all eligible, grossly rich bachelors? But still? He wouldn’t have brought her here to assault her. Sherrie knew they were together. She was an employee for goodness’ sake. A stupid, naïve—
“Whatever you’re thinking, stop.”
“Mr. Grey?”
“Call me Nick.” He offered her a lopsided grin. “I think we’re a bit past those formalities.”
“Nick.”
His lips curled into a genuine smile, crinkling lines beside his eyes, making him look older than she’d guessed. “There is no excuse for my—” He ran his fingers through his hair, giving him a rumpled, boyish look. “I practically attacked you last night. In my defense, I have no defense.”
She chuckled, relaxing her shoulders. Nick was nothing like she’d imagined. She found him even more attractive, if that was possible.
“The gentleman is a perspective client, the project could be the company’s largest, the one to put Grey & Company on the map.”
He was rambling, so she sat, holding back her impatience, quietly waiting for him to get to the point.
“He—and his shareholders—expressed concerns with, er, my personal life. Apparently, my reputation preceded me. And not in a good way.” He grinned sardonically. “So, I invented a fiancée.” He stopped talking, watching her like he was waiting for a response.
She wrinkled her eyebrows together. “I really don’t see what that has to do with me—”
“I told him you were my fiancée.”
