I coughed as more blood flowed in my mouth from another massive, agonizing impact. The frightened cries echoed from the civilians as the attacks pounded, again and again, the intensity reverberating into my body with each blow. I would have to outlast them until reinforcements came.
I cried out in pain as this last volley of powerful magical strikes seemed to psychically attack my ribcage. This was all I could do for now—just shield them. If I went after the enemies in a counterattack, I would have to drop my shield, and the civilians would die. We were severely outnumbered. We needed reinforcements… I could only shield them; if the Kurenai grew bolder, I would be overrun. It was resting upon me, me alone…
