I am safe here, in my cottage in the woods where no one knows me or my real name. Here all is peaceful and calm and the real world can’t hurt me – because I know how cruel it can be. But then I see here again and her pale, white face. Watching me. Taunting me. And then the notes appear. I know who you really are… I know what you did… My mind in whirl I don’t know what to do.

Now the walls of my cottage feel like a prison. The peaceful woods around me feel like a maze that will trap me forever. Who is this woman? And what does she want? And can she possibly know what happened during that boiling hot summer of 1976 when I made my terrible mistake. And if so, how? So many questions paralysing me with fear. One thing I do know. She must be stopped.

J. A. Baker was born and brought up in the North East of England. She has had 15 books published and recently completed book 16.

When she's not writing and thinking up new and inventive ways of killing off her fictional characters or looking after her young grandchildren, she can be found pottering around her garden with her madcap dog, Theo or in a coffee shop eating cake with her long-suffering husband.

My Thoughts

I have enjoyed a few of J.A. Baker's novels in the past. This one was right up there with all of the others. If you like a twisty story, then this one will appeal.

The story is told from different viewpoints/characters where a tragedy from childhood can cause issues in adulthood. It takes a bit to sort out the characters but I think that is what the author intended. Starts out a bit convoluted but it does actually come together.

When a woman, a successful author, is hit by a hit had run driver, she loses a good part of her memory. She is giving a talk and signing her books when she notices a woman sitting in the back. She buys no books or makes any comments just sits there and appears at subsequent book signings. Completely creepy.

One day her dog goes missing, the dog is her only companion, she is a loner, just her and her dog in a cottage in the woods. She can't remember anything from her past, where she came from, who her family is, nothing. It is a lonely existence but she makes do.

When a woman runs into her in the woods she gets a bit scared, who is the woman and what does she want from her? The woman appears to be stalking her.
As the story goes along like I said, it becomes apparent who each of the women is, a tragic story from the childhoods of the women, and what is inevitable. To say too much more would be a spoiler.

This is a very good psychological thriller and I look forward to reading more by this author!

5 stars!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes.
