The closer he got, the more apparent it became Julian was the only one sitting there. His head spun in every direction, scanning the faces of the guests. Jenna was nowhere to be found. His heart skipped a beat, and he advanced toward the table, setting the drinks down. He stared at Julian who leaned back in his chair, a lazy grin on his face. “Where’s Jenna?”
“She and Clara headed down to the shore to take a walk. They wanted us to join them with the drinks.”
“How long ago?” Cole calculated in his head how many minutes ticked by while he waited at the bar. He couldn’t have been standing there more than ten minutes. It would have been long enough for something to have happened to her.
An uneasy sensation slammed into his gut and Cole took off, winding his way around tables and chairs, dodging the cluster of people leisurely going about their business, and bumping into a few.
The captain’s voice called out from behind, and Cole hit the shore, his feet sinking into the loose sand with every step he took. His gaze darted frantically around, but there wasn’t a soul around, and it didn’t matter how much distance he closed. The tide rushing in was the only sound.
Cole rounded a corner where a few beach houses stood on stilts. As he scanned the area, Julian called his name again. This time he realized the captain couldn’t have been more than a few feet behind him. A chill ran down the length of his spine, and he remained as still as a statue. A formidable premonition gripped him. He couldn’t for the life of him explain how he knew a gun was trained on the back of his head, but it was as sure as the waves crashing against the shore.
Before another second ticked by, Cole hunched over, acting as if he was attempting to catch his breath. He freed the gun from the ankle holster, spun and trained the Glock dead center of Julian’s head.
Finch’s mouth dropped open. Surprise lit his eyes, and the gun in the man’s hand shook slightly.
“Where’s Jenna?” Cole demanded, holding a steady finger on the trigger.
It was apparent the man was doing everything to regain control of the situation. “I can’t tell you that.”
“You have about five seconds to tell me, or I’ll bury a slug in your forehead.
