The Flower Reader by Elizabeth Loupas Review

SYNOPSIS

In the sweeping new novel from the author of The Second Duchess, dangerous secrets lead a passionate young woman into a maze of murder and conspiracy as Mary, Queen of Scots, comes home to reign in a treacherously divided Scotland….

With her dying breath, Mary of Guise entrusts a silver casket to Rinette Leslie of Granmuir, who possesses the ancient gift of floromancy. Inside the casket, and meant only for the young Mary, Queen of Scots, are papers the old queen has painstakingly collected—the darkest secrets of every Scottish lord and explosive private prophecies prepared by Nostradamus. Rinette risks her life to keep the casket safe, but she makes a fatal mistake: she shows it to her beloved young husband. On the very day the young queen comes home, Rinette’s husband is brutally assassinated.

Devastated, Rinette demands justice from the queen before she will surrender the casket. Amid glittering masques and opulent weddings, courtly intrigues and Highland rebellions, the queen’s agents and Rinette herself search for the shadowy assassin. They are surrounded by ruthless men from all over Europe who will do anything to force Rinette to give up the casket—threatening her life, stripping her of her beloved castle by the sea, forcing her to marry a man she hates, and driving her from the man she has reluctantly grown to love. In the end, the flowers are all she can trust—and only the flowers will lead her safely home to Granmuir.

About Elizabeth Loupas

Elizabeth Loupas lives near the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. She is presently a novelist, freelance writer and amateur historian. In other times and other places she has been a radio network vice president, a reference librarian, a business-to-business magazine editor, and a tutor in English literature.

One of her passions is the art and poetry of the Pre-Raphaelites. This led her to the Rossettis and the Brownings, and the project nearest and dearest to her heart--her novel THE SECOND DUCHESS, based on Robert Browning's poem "My Last Duchess."

She hates housework, cold weather, and wearing shoes. She loves animals, gardens, and popcorn. Not surprisingly she lives in a state of happy barefoot chaos with her delightful and faintly bemused husband (the Broadcasting Legend), her herb garden, her popcorn popper, and two beagles.

My Thoughts:
This is the first novel I have read by Elizabeth Loupas and enjoyed it so much that I will be going back to read more of her work. The Flower Reader is about Rinette Leslie of Granmuir, Scotland. At the beginning of the story, Rinette is given a silver casket with secret information in it from the dying Queen Mary with instructions that Rinette is to give to Mary Queen of Scots when she comes back to Scotland.

Rinette is a "flower reader", meaning that she is able to "see" things about people by using flowers.  Rinette is deeply in love with Alexander Gordon, a friend from childhood. She takes the casket home to Granmuir until she is able to hide it. Rinette and Andrew get married and are extremely happy. Rinette shows her husband the casket and he talks her into opening it, which they do. Inside the casket is some powerful information that a lot of people want.

Andrew is murdered and Rinette is in danger, there are different factions, including Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici, that desperately want this casket for their own reasons and will do whatever it takes, including murder to get the casket and it's information.

After Andrew's death, Rinette is determined to find out who killed her husband and in doing so, she continues to be in danger and ends up in a forced marriage with a brutal man, who threatens her and her children and all she holds dear.

I always love reading a historical fiction novel for the interesting facts that I had not known about. Although a lot of it was fiction, there were enough true facts thrown in to make this an exciting read and the author has a part in the back of the book explaining what is fact and what is fiction.

This is a well researched historical novel full of court intrigue, violence and most of all love. I highly recommend this novel.
I received a copy of this book for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Description Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis by Keith Hirshland

Murphy Murphy comes from a long line of male Murphys. All were named Murphy and all were cops. This Murphy heads the Department of Redundancy Department and his superior officer, Captain David “Dud” Hill has found him a case. The Captain’s niece is in a rock ‘n roll band called Serious Crisis, and it seems items belonging to members of the band have started to disappear. Were these items stolen? Were they simply lost? As Murphy Murphy works the case, he must chase down the clues all the while dealing with grammatical anomalies that drive him crazy. As Murphy gets closer to the answers he seeks, one more “thing” goes missing; the Captain’s niece. Suddenly, in an instant, the stakes in the case of Serious Crisis become a lot more dire. Part Jasper Fforde, part Michael Connelly; Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis combines humor, mystery, and grammar goofs as the detective pursues clues and suspects from coast to coast. It’s an entertaining and educational read for all ages.

Praise for Keith Hirshland

“I really enjoyed following along with each person as you discovery more about each one along with how four unsolved mysteries may be linked to everything..’Big Flies’ story takes off like a flash.. This is a great adventure and one that I recommend you check out. You will not be disappointed.”-JBrownder Book Reviews
“ I found myself intrigued by this talented writer’s style.. A mystery woven into another mystery. The suspense was great. I enjoyed following the characters throughout the book.. this novel was realistic, stunning, and one that all readers can easily connect to in one or more ways. Brilliant, clever, and mysterious. Keith Hirshland has a way that lured me in deep. I couldn’t stop reading it.”-Urban Book Reviews
“This is an engaging story well told. The plot hinges on the power of secrets and secrets revealed but Keith fully understands the heart of the story is the unfolding of relationships fulfilled or not. Can we ever really know who we know? While this novel works beautifully as a nostalgic and fun caper tale it’s all wrapped up in fathers and sons, true and lasting friends and of course intriguing women. Keith is aiming high here. Really, really well done.”- David R. Hill, Amazon Reviewer
“I had to dig my teeth in the first pages but once I did I was on a twisty turning ride. This one turned out to be worth the ride. A fast paced story with great characters. The plot had some twists making it entertaining. As the bodies begin piling up it's a race to solve the mystery. I enjoyed reading 'The Flower Girl Murder'. and look forward to reading more from this author. “-My Reading Journeys
“Author Keith Hirshland provides a multi-layered storyline that has enough mystery, suspense, drama, treachery, secrets, and intriguing twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing, while weaving an intricate and complicated web of what the motive of the murders could have been, and the spectrum of possible participants who could have been involved in committing them. And if that isn't enough to captivate the reader, the author adds a wonderful touch of humor and a bit of romance into the mix to keep them entertained.”-Jersey Girl Book Reviews

Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis by Keith Hirshland

Guest Review by Sol A.

'Murphy Murphy and the Case of the Serious Crisis' is both a mystery and a comedy in equal doses. Those two things may not seem like they should go together, but Keith Hirshland applies them both expertly and the result is a great read that keeps you interested from start to finish. At the start of the book, Murphy Murphy already has a lot to think about. Coming from a long line of men with the double name, Murphy Murphy, he is a slightly neurotic detective who works for the Department of Redundancy Department within the police. Murphy's job is to find and eliminate redundancies and he loves his work—or, at least he's pretty sure he does. Besides the name, another traditional facet of the Murphy men is their propensity for taking jobs as detectives. It's practically a Murphy man's birthright to be a detective, but Murphy struggles with his boss, Captain David “Dud” Hill because of the man's constant teasing of him. Despite Dud's needling, when a new case comes in involving a band called Serious Crisis and some missing items, the Captain immediately gives the case to Murphy. Murphy must solve the case and watch out for his own life when things abruptly take a turn for the deadly.

This was an absolutely excellent mystery with well fleshed-out characters and quirky atmosphere. 'Murphy Murphy' is easy to indulge in and a quick read for a rainy day, with appropriately high stakes and exciting romance. There were some really effective twists and turns in the plot of this book that I did not see coming, and I always appreciate that in a fun mystery. Hirshland is a strong writer and one that I can see myself reading more from. As a result, I think 'Murphy Murphy' is definitely worth recommending and I award it 5 stars across the board!

The Lady's SlipperPublication Date: June 3, 2011
Pan MacMillan
Formats: Ebook, Paperback

England, 1660.

The King is back, but memories of the English Civil War still rankle. In rural Westmorland, artist Alice Ibbetson has become captivated by the rare Lady’s Slipper orchid. She is determined to capture it’s unique beauty for posterity, even if it means stealing the flower from the land of the recently converted Quaker, Richard Wheeler. Fired by his newfound faith, the former soldier Wheeler feels bound to track down the missing orchid. Meanwhile, others are eager to lay hands on the flower, and have their own powerful motives.

Margaret Poulter, a local medicine woman, is seduced by the orchid’s mysterious herbal powers, while Geoffrey Fisk, Alice’s patron and former comrade-in-arms of Wheeler, sees the valuable plant as a way to repair his ailing fortunes and cure his own agonizing illness. Fearing that Wheeler and his friends are planning revolution, Fisk sends his son Stephen to spy on the Quakers, only for the young man to find his loyalties divided as he befriends the group he has been sent to investigate.

Then, when Alice Ibbetson is implicated in a brutal murder, she is imprisoned along with the suspected anti-royalist Wheeler. As Fisk’s sanity grows ever more precarious, and Wheeler and Alice plot their escape, a storm begins to brew, from which no party will escape unscathed. Vivid, gripping and intensely atmospheric, The Lady’s Slipper is a novel about beauty, faith and loyalty.

Internationally bestselling author Lucinda Riley returns with THE SEVEN SISTERS, the first novel in a spellbinding new series (seven books in all) inspired by the ancient myth of the Seven Sisters of Pleiades. THE SEVEN SISTERS takes readers from the shores of Lake Geneva to modern day Rio de Janeiro to bohemian Paris of the 1920s in a sweeping saga of passion, sacrifice, and the enduring power of art.

Upon the death of their wealthy, enigmatic father, Maia D’Apliese and her sisters convene at their family home, a secluded estate on the shores of Lake Geneva. Each of the sisters had been adopted at birth from a different part of the globe. Maia, the eldest, is the first to learn of their adoptive father’s death. Confusion is added to her grief when the sisters -- Maia, the beauty; Ally, the leader; Star, the peacemaker; CeCe, the pragmatist; Tiggy, the nurturer; and Electra, the fireball – gather to hear the reading of the will. Their father has left each of his daughters a simple clue about her birthplace.

Until now, Maia has constructed her life so that she does not have to leave the safety of the family nest. But spurred by her father’s final bequest, Maia embarks on a journey to Rio de Janeiro to discover the truth of her origins. In Rio, Maia is accompanied by Floriano Quintelas, a novelist and amateur historian, who is intrigued to discover that Maia is apparently descended from the Aires Cabrals, an aristocratic Portuguese family who have been prominent in the country for the past two centuries. Together, they delve into her complex family history, a quest that is helped by their discovery of the crumbling mansion where an elderly woman – Maia’s biological grandmother -- is on the verge of death. When the old woman’s caretaker secretly slips Maia a stack of old letters, an astonishing family history unfolds.

My Review
The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley is loosely based on the Seven Sisters of the Pleiades, a constellation next to the belt of Orion. Real life sisters, Maia, Electra, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, and Sterope were all adopted by a rich man "Pa Salt". Their adoptions are a mystery in themselves as their father never discussed it. They were adopted from various places around the globe all from different nationalities.

Maia D'Apliese was away on a needed getaway in London to visit a friend when she gets word that Pa Salt passed away. She is the first of the sisters to arrive at the Lake Geneva estate, Atlantis. Their father has already been buried at sea and they are all there for the reading of the will. They are all given a clue as to their birth and they need to figure it out from this clue.

Maia's clue takes her to Rio de Janeiro where she discovers who her family is. Her journey takes her to her dying biological grandmother. She is given letters from her grandmothers caretaker that tells her the story of Maia's great grandmother, Izabela Bonifacio, daughter of Italian immigrants, whose fortune comes from coffee farms. Izabela is betrothed to a man,  her father has chosen for her and prior to the wedding her intended allows her to go to Paris with a friend. While there she meets Laurent, a handsome sculptor who is assisting in the creation of the famous Christ the Redeemer monument that looks over Rio.

While in Rio, Maia meets a novelist, Floriano Quintelsas, who she has translated a novel for, and he accompanies her on her discovery of her birthright.  While learning about her great grandmother, Maia also learns about herself and what is really important, it helps her get out of her own seclusion and discover her heart. This is a wonderful story, full of love passion, history and the beauty that is Paris and Rio de Janeiro. This story is very well written and will have the reader wanting more, and of course there will be as this is the first in a series of books featuring each of the sisters as they explore their ancestry. I loved everything about the book, the complex characters. The story takes the reader from the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland to Rio de Janeiro and then back to 1920's Paris.

I recently went to the Dominican Republic and went up the mountain to see the replica of the Christ Redeemer statue and reading this story gave me more insights as to how the original was constructed. The author gives us an idea about the art of sculpting and the history of the monument itself. Very interesting indeed.  This is a historical fiction novel that you won't want to end. I highly recommend this book, but be prepared to stay up late to get to the last page and then eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

I received a copy for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Then strangers, who call themselves Varu, come to Luca for help.

They call him Cana and claim he’s the only one who can bring back their wolves.

How the creature will consume Nox’s mind.

How he will become the monster.

Then it will destroy Luca.

But they can stop that from happening if Nox is willing to risk death by letting them purge him of the ichor.

As far as Nox is concerned, it’s a small price to pay to keep Luca safe.

EXCERPT:

The screen on the laptop dimmed, the screen saver kicked in, and a double helix spun into infinity.

A couple of hours ago, he would have called everything that came to him from those New World servers crap. He had called it crap.

But now?

Fuck, he really needed to call Phillips.

Reese took his phone out of his pocket.

The heat clicked off.

The grandfather clock next to his aquarium ticked.

The pump under the aquarium stand hummed.

Reese’s pulse whooshed through his ears before falling into the background.

Compulsion led him to the picture window.

Porch lights edged the neighbor’s front yard. Leaves skittered from one shadow to the next.

There were no lights in the wide stretch of lawn and Reese’s rows of flower beds. He still hadn’t replanted the petunias destroyed by the helicopter landing in his yard when the US Army showed up at his door, requesting his help.

He’d meant to replace them weeks ago. Even saved coupons for discounts on fertilizer and mulch. Then the weather got colder, the rain more frequent, and deciphering the mess New World left behind gobbled up whatever spare bits of free time he had.

The shadows between the trees shifted with the wind. Just empty spaces filled with night, nothing more.

Yet…

Reese leaned closer and his exhale fogged the glass.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Something’s out there.

And why would Reese think that?

“Sleep deprivation, that’s all it is.” Reese pushed his glasses up higher on his nose. “I mean, look how many hours of sleep you get a night.” He checked the time. “Two a.m., no wonder you’re seeing things and talking to yourself and talking to yourself about seeing things. Fuck.” But Reese couldn’t step away from the window. “Pretty sure there’s some Benadryl with your name on it.” A weight settled in his stomach. “Two of those, you’ll sleep like a rock, plus your allergies won’t be an issue.” The ache in his shoulder beat louder. “Still talking to yourself, still running your mouth, Dr. Dante. What the hell are you—”

The streetlamp at the entrance of the cul-de-sac dimmed. Hairs on Reese’s arms stood following the electric rush crawling over his skin.

A shadow ripped free of the darkness and lunged.

Reese raised his arms and jumped back just as the picture window exploded in a hail of transparent daggers. Crimson trails chased the burning lines crisscrossing his flesh.

The clink of raining glass silenced, leaving Reese with his heartbeat in his ears.

He turned.

A massive black dog stood where his coffee table had been.

Only dogs didn’t have prehensile toes or green-yellow eyes void of empathy. And they were never so black they cut swatches in the darkness.

The Anubis roared and leapt.

I am a writer of contemporary and speculative fiction and artist of all things monsters. I live to create new worlds and the people in them. Several of my books have been best sellers both nationally and internationally. I have also been a finalist in the LAMDA awards, the "Oscars" of gay literary works.

I do my best to write original stories with powerful characters and emotion as well as a fast paced plot. My goal isn't just to deliver a good story but to take the reader into the story and let them experience the characters as if they are right there with them.

While almost all my books have a romantic element, I will be the first to admit, they are not traditional romance. In fact, I'd like to think there is nothing traditional about them. And the stories I paint are done so way outside the lines of traditional genres.

One of my favorite things to do as a writer is push the boundaries of what makes a story and to deliver the unexpected and maybe even change the perspective of the reader.

My characters are more often than not, beautifully flawed, not alway the good guy, and make mistakes. Their stories will take dark turns which, in the end, make the light at the end of the tunnel all the more brighter.

If you're looking for something different, exciting, and unique, my books are for you.

Guest Review by Laura Lee

'Song Girl: A Mystery in Two Verses,' by Keith Hirshland is one heck of a reading experience!

Hirshland's writing is unique in the sense that he introduces a lot of different strands of the story and then expertly twists them all together for an ending that the reader can't possibly see coming.

'Song Girl,' is basically about four different characters, all living in Colorado Springs. First is Reg Byrd, a former biker who ended up in hot water with the local police after an altercation with a police officer that led to shots being fired. Reg killed the officer and, soon afterward, fled town, finally returning many years later in order to reconnect with his family.

Next there is Detective Marc Allen, formerly of Raleigh, North Carolina, who decided to move to the police department in Colorado Springs for a change of scenery. Back in Raleigh, Allen worked a murder case that was apparently solved by the suicidal confession of an elderly man. However, Allen feels that the confession was false and that the man's daughter Teri Hickox, was actually guilty of the crimes.

This leads to our third character, Teri, who follows Allen to Colorado in order to further torment him. Before discovering Teri's presence in town, Allen is introduced to our fourth character, Rampart Haynes, a former boxing champion who begins caring for his adopted sister, Hannah after she is involved in an accident that leaves her only able to speak in song titles.

Collectively, the four different perspectives combine to create a very interesting and varied mystery that makes the book impossible to put down.

I could not believe the depths that Teri would sink to in order to make her presence known and the different strategies that Allen used to solve crimes. A one-of-a-kind mystery in many ways, 'Song Girl,' is worth picking up for the musical nostalgia alone!

Teri waited in the parking lot until she believed she wouldn’t run into Hannah and her brother. Inside the building she noticed dozens of people lacing up skates and getting ready to hit the ice. Others had clearly just finished and were putting on their street shoes and getting ready to leave. There was a sign in desk but Teri walked right by it, telling a young lady she was just there to watch. She was craning her neck trying to catch a glimpse of Hannah and walked right into a boy who barely came up to her waist.

 “Oh geez,” she said, “sorry.”

“It’s okay,” the boy said putting on his helmet. “I’m little.”

“But I bet you’re fast,” Teri looked at him and smiled. The boy nodded. “How fast?” she asked him.

 “Really, really fast.”

 “Show me,” she suggested.

“Okay,” he smiled from ear to ear. “Come on.”

Rampart watched as his sister gracefully moved from place to place. He knew she could sense every bump, groove and imperfection in the rink and was able to make the needed minute adjustments with the blades. Her spins, turns and glides seemed effortless even though he knew that wasn’t the case. His technique, on the other hand, was much less nuanced. He loved to attack the ice and gather as much speed as he could muster while taking care to observe proper etiquette. They went back and forth and forth and back meeting several times in the middle to share a story or a laugh. Rampart noticed he was working up a sweat while he thought Hannah looked as fresh as the second she first entered the oval. That’s why it surprised him a little when she suggested they skate over to the side and take a break.

“I’m gonna be sore tomorrow,” she confessed.

“Me too. And you’re full of it, by the way.”

 “What?”

“I believe your exact words were ‘I haven’t laced the ol’ skates up in a while’. After watching you out there I’m calling BS.”

“I guess it’s like riding a bike,” she said with a shrug.

“Well whatever it is you looked great.”

“Why thank you, my brother,” she curtsied.

They both leaned against the boards and watched their fellow citizens of Colorado Springs skate. The group was made up of all shapes, sizes, and skill levels. Some as good or better than Hannah, others clearly on skates for the first time or at least for the first time in a long, long, time. A smattering of parents, siblings and friends hung out in the seats and watched too. They noticed several young kids, both boys and girls, in hockey jerseys and helmets speeding around the ice.

“Mighty Mites,” Ramp said pointing at a couple of them.

“Was that you when you were a kid?”

“Sure was,” he nodded, “but I’m not sure I was ever that confident.

 “Or reckless,” she added.

 “Or that.”

“Ready for a few more spins?” She asked as she pushed herself away from the boards. At that moment one of the youngest, smallest skaters came rocketing toward them. Rampart noticed and thought the kid couldn’t be more than five or six. He was hauling with his head down, eyes on the ice.

“Hannah!” he yelled a warning. Startled by the sound she turned awkwardly and had to wave her arms a little to regain her balance. The kid, a boy for sure, had looked up when Rampart screamed but he hadn’t slowed. He saw Hannah leaning one way so he went the other. But when she righted herself she slid a little further out than the kid anticipated and his right skate clipped her left sending her off balance again. This time there was no time for correction. She fell. Hard. The first thing that hit the ice was her head.

Teri watched it all from her perch in the arena. She grabbed her purse and left.

Rampart had watched in horror. He tried to warn his sister about the speeding bullet on skates but he acknowledged that his outburst may have made everything worse. He saw the skates make contact and the boy continue on as if nothing had happened. That’s because everything happened to Hannah. Her left leg went out from under her and her right was ill prepared to compensate. Everything appeared to Ramp in slow motion as he watched his sister’s arms flail in an effort to help her body find purchase. They failed and she went down. The trance he found himself in was broken by the sickening sound of her head hitting the ice.

“Hannah!” he screamed again. Her body lay motionless. Thankfully, he thought, there was no blood. “Somebody call 9-1-1!” he yelled as he fell to his knees next to her. “Call 9-1-1!” he cried. “Please!”
