Wish For Me by A.Star Book Blast!!

Series: The Djinn Order, Act One
Publication Date: April 27, 2015
Genre: Steampunk Fantasy/Romance

Three wishes. Two lovers. One destiny.

When the snarky Glory St. Pierre discovers the gold mechanical vase in her deceased grandmother’s basement, she has no idea that she has uncovered a priceless treasure: a genie lamp. With a real genie inside. A very sexy genie with a not-so-sexy grudge against the entire human race.

Irving Amir hates being called a genie. He’s a Djinn, and he is none too happy to be in the service of Glory, who is as intolerable, and beautiful, as humans come. Now he owes her his gratitude for freeing him and three wishes. Damn his luck.

But an arrow through the shoulder alerts Irving to the fact that he is being hunted, and after a truce dinner with Glory ends with them both almost being killed, hating each other goes right out the window. As feelings change and love starts to develop, they must dig through the secrets and lies to find the truth...a truth neither of them will ever see coming.

WARNING: Not suitable for ages 18 and under. A significant source of bad language, sexy times, and dirty jokes. If you suffer from a lack of a sense of humor, take with plenty of wine. If the symptom persists, see a doctor.

Excerpt — The Australian, by Lesley Young
When I heard men’s voices and women’s laughter an hour or so later, at 12:30 a.m., I quickly turned off the light and rolled over, my heart beating so loud I thought it might burst.
The bedroom door opened and closed quietly.
He was back. I could barely think straight. What was wrong with me? It was worse than the second grade spring blossom play when all I was supposed to say was part of a poem, “violets are blue,” and instead, peed my pants.
The clang of a belt buckle. Clothes rustling. Static buzz (in my head). When the bed depressed suddenly, I inhaled loudly.
“You’re awake, Miss Sykes.”
Having blundered my attempt to pretend to be asleep, I was forced to concede the truth. But first, I needed to return from panic station.
“Yes,” I uttered, regulating my breathing and my mind.
He turned on the light on his side of the bed, and I rolled over. I observed him swing his bare, strong legs up and under the top sheet, and lean back halfway upright against pillows. He was wearing underwear, only, and I was horrified to see my employer in such a state of undress . . . and yet, at the same time, beyond exalted to be lying beside a man in such intimate repose.
I could not reconcile the two experiences.
When our eyes met, my heart hitched up to hummingbird speed.
I could not steady myself.
“Howya holding up?” he asked quietly, staring down at me.
“Fine.” I chose to lie.
“Why aren’t you asleep then?”
Propping myself up awkwardly on one elbow, I stared at the black soft hair peeking out of his armpit. I felt the hair on his leg brush my thigh under the sheet.
Oh yes. Why wasn’t I asleep? What could I answer? Because my body was in a fever pitch of need. Base, biological yearning, mysterious, inexplicable attraction.
Moistness. Hunger. Salivation.
I stared up at him, and was unable to say a word. In that moment, I saw into his eyes and it was clear he was not intending to take advantage of our unusual situation—he appeared blank. Indifferent.
Not a word came to mind. I just kept staring up into those large ebony eyes that were staring back down on me.
“Don’t look at me like that, Miss Sykes. Not if you know what’s good for ya,” he finally murmured through gritted teeth.

I would love to visit Croatia again as I have family there. However, in My Masters' Nightmare, I have started writing about Italians. My husband is part Italian and I also have a degree in Italian.
SPORTS: As a teen my favorite sports were karate, badminton, and running. I also did unarmed combat and played in a touch rugby team (my gym teacher made me do the last one!) Now, I stick to coaching soccer and running. I have completed two marathons, numerous half-marathons and one 30K run.
CAREER PATH: I started off as a Graphic Designer, then went to Auckland University, where I got a BA degree in Art History and Italian Studies and a post-graduate Honors degree in Art History. I worked in the Art History field, then became a full-time artist, doing commissions. I eventually lost all of my senses and gave it up to be a poor, starving writer, smh.
FAVORITE FOODS: I'm vegetarian. I love pasta based foods, tofu, chocolate mousse and golden queen peaches.
BAD HABITS: I'm a major procrastinator that can't seem to earn money to save myself!

Cookie Love by Mindy Segal with Kate Leahy Cookbook Review!

Book Details
Hardcover: 296 pages
Publisher: Ten Speed Press (April 7, 2015)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1607746816
ISBN-13: 978-1607746812

The Book

Mindy Segal is an up-and-coming chef and baker who's serious about cookies and bars. In her first cookbook, Segal turns classic recipes into more elevated, fun interpretations of everyone's favorite sweet treat. From Brown Butter with Hickory Smoked Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies and Crème de Violet Snickerdoodles, to Citrus, Brown Butter, and Graham Cracker Shortbread with Framboise Preserves and Hibiscus Sugar Rugelach, Segal's recipes are inspired and far from expected. This modern twist on a traditional favorite is the perfect addition to every baker's bookshelf.

About the Author(s)

Pastry creator MINDY SEGAL specializes in contemporary American cuisine, putting a modern twist on traditional classics. The James Beard Foundation nominated her for Outstanding Pastry Chef in the country five years in a row, and she has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, and O, the Oprah magazine, as well as made appearances on television, including Today and the Food Network . Mindy is the proprietor of Chicago's popular HotChocolate Restaurant and Dessert Bar.

KATE LEAHY is a freelance writer and recipe developer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She co-authored SPQR, The Preservation Kitchen, and A16 Food + Wine, the 2009 IACP Cookbook of the Year.

My Thoughts

Cookie Love is just that, cookies that you can love and they can become your go to recipes. This book has recipes that range from drop cookies to bar cookies, with favorites such as Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter Cookies. I made the Classic Chocolate Chip cookies and they were to die for! Not only are there recipes but there are tips and what to have as staples in your pantry. You will learn about the different types of cocoa, different dairy products and even a recipe on how to make your own butter. You can learn about any item that you can use in a good cookie recipe, vanilla, cane sugar, brown sugar, sea salt and so much more. Then at the back of the book are the Tricks of the Trade where the author tells us how to measure ingredients, on dough, on baking and decorating cookies.

I think that this cookbook should be in everyones collection. Gorgeous pictures, concise and easy recipes that will be family favorites. I just love this book and intend to make more recipes from it in the future, such as the sample recipe listed below.

I received this book for review from Blogging for Books and was not monetarily compensated for said review.

Oatmeal Scotchies
makes approximately 42 cookies

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons old-fashioned oats
1 cup (8 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
½ cup cane sugar
½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar
½ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 extra-large egg, at room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
½ cup cake flour
½ cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon sea salt flakes
1 cup (6 ounces) butterscotch chips

There is one cookie that I cannot make: oatmeal raisin. When I was in culinary school, I spent a week trying to produce the perfect oatmeal raisin cookie. I was on a quest to make it flat and crisp, but it never worked out. The raisins always dried out or the cookies turned flabby. I finally set this cookie aside and moved on.

Yet two sources of inspiration drove me to revisit the oatmeal-cookie category. Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee, Illinois, sells unhulled oats that look like barley malt and I wanted to highlight these special oats in a cookie. Then along came my second source of inspiration. Luke LeFiles, a Carolina boy, managed the bar at Hot Chocolate for years. He constantly put in requests for oatmeal scotchies, the butterscotch-filled chewy cookies he remembered from home. One day I realized that swapping out raisins in exchange for butterscotch would solve my flabby oatmeal cookie problem: The butterscotch complemented the oats, and the batter baked like an oatmeal lace cookie.

Whether you have unhulled oats from a farm or old-fashioned oats from the grocery store, toasting oats before baking them draws out the flavor. I take a small amount of the toasted oats and grind them in a spice grinder to enhance the cookie’s delicate texture. For a variation of this recipe, use shards of Toffee (page 250) in place of butterscotch chips.
Heat the oven to 350°F and line a couple of half sheet (13 by 18-inch) pans with parchment paper.
Spread the oats across a third half sheet pan and toast lightly until the oats smell like cooked oatmeal, approximately
5 minutes. (Keep the oven on for the cookies.) Let cool. In a spice grinder, grind 2 tablespoons of the oats into a fine powder.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix the butter briefly on medium speed for 5 to
10 seconds. Add the sugars and beat until the butter mixture is aerated and pale in color, approximately 4 minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula to bring the batter together.

Crack the egg into a small cup or bowl and add the vanilla.

Place the powdered and whole oats, flours, baking soda, and salts in a bowl and whisk to combine. Add the butterscotch chips and stir until lightly coated in flour.

On medium speed, add the egg and vanilla to the butter mixture and mix until the batter resembles cottage cheese, approximately 5 seconds. With a rubber spatula, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to bring the batter together. Mix on medium speed for another 20 seconds to make nearly homogeneous.

Add the dry ingredients all at once and mix on low speed until the batter comes together but still looks shaggy, approximately 30 seconds. Do not overmix. Remove the bowl from the stand mixer. With a plastic bench scraper, bring the dough completely together by hand.

Portion the dough into 8 mounds using a ¾-ounce (1 ½-tablespoon) ice cream scoop and evenly distribute onto a prepared sheet pan. (The cookies will spread significantly as they bake.)
Bake for 8 minutes. Give the pan a sturdy tap against the counter or the oven to deflate the cookies. Rotate the pan and continue to bake until the edges are a deep golden brown, the centers have fallen, and the cookies are beginning to crisp and brown, another 4 to 6 minutes (Do not underbake or the cookies won’t crisp up when they cool.) Let the cookies cool completely on the pan. Repeat with the remaining dough.

The cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up

to 3 days. The cookies are best when baked the day the dough is made.

Cost of Survival, Book #1

COSfrontAnger isn’t an emotion anymore, it’s more of a survival mode I can’t afford to let go.
My dad predicted World War III would happen in his life, but he died two years before… with my brother…
…before Mom and I walked in search of refuge from the bombing.
Strengthened by her faith, Mom never feels alone. But me? I don’t know what to believe or where to turn. Someone once said keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but I disagree. Friends scare me the most. They know me and my mom. Nothing about them is safe.
The ones in charge… Control everything…
Crud, I’ve started crying because I’m scared I won’t survive World War III. But a bigger part of me is scared I will.
My mom is bleeding in my arms and she’s making me promise to follow her three rules.
Pray. Don’t trust anyone. Stay alive.
How long do I need to break all three?

Exchange Rate, Book #2

exchangerateI’m pregnant and I couldn’t be more excited. But the community Bodey, his dad, and I live in has rules. Rules that make Mom’s rules seem like safety nets.
Only 200 people are allowed at a time. My baby will make it 201.
The leader is making me choose someone from our house to die so there will be room for my child. Either I make the decision or they take… my…
Even in the craziness that the world has become, I refuse to believe only 200 can live in it at once.
The “community” is safe-ish, comfortable. We have food, warmth, and there isn’t immediate danger of being robbed while we sleep.
Doesn’t it make sense we’d have to exchange something for all that?
I’ve survived this long. Maybe that’s enough. Maybe I should die so my family can live. Or maybe I can get through the lines and find a people worth sacrificing for.

-------------------------------------

Excerpt:

3:32a.m.

The clock flashed in the darkness, mocking her sleeplessness and paranoia. The recurring nightmare of her childhood – the one where she saw herself laying in a vast clearing in the woods under a full moon, bleeding to death – hadn’t haunted her in years. Tonight, however, it shook her from her sleep, and she was wound too tight to lie back down.

The night seemed to whisper in a tone meant to caress her soul, but the sound was tinged with something darker than the moonless sky outside her house. It chilled her to the core. She anxiously searched the room again for something tangible causing her fright, but it was an exercise in futility. Nothing lurked behind the cracked door to her closet, and no frightening devils under her bed waited to grab her and pull her into the Netherworld. She was utterly alone.

And perhaps that’s what was most frightening.

Her terror overwhelming, she offered a prayer against the darkness in a frantic whisper. Her mother used to recite this prayer with her, over and over, until she put aside her fear of the dream and fell asleep. As a child, it had been her only sanctuary.

Now, she was on her own, and she spoke the words fervently, hoping to find the same peace it had brought in her youth. “Please do not forsake me to evil. I ask you to protect me from whatever beast, man, or spirit steals my peace and robs my sleep.”

A cry ripped through the heavy silence, shattering the last of her calm. She cringed against the headboard, backed away from the sound of large wings flapping outside the large window that now seemed like a portal into hell. She drew the thin sheet up around her neck as if it offered protection. The darkness seemed to thicken and solidify before her eyes as she stared at the delicate glass, and a scream bubbled in her throat. She swallowed against it as the first tear spilled down her cheek.

The whispers came one on top of the other. Try as she might, she couldn’t make out the words, and they jumbled in her head in a painful knot. Her heart pounded near explosion, and she gulped deep, sobbing breaths. “Please, God, no!” she cried, though she didn’t know what threatened her. Wisps of night swirled around her like clouds, brushing against her cheek and leaving a trail of ice in their wake. She swatted at them, and her sheet slid to the floor, leaving her feeling exposed and vulnerable. As she prepared to cry out, the voices condensed, and a single word rang so clear she didn’t know if it was aloud or in her own head.

Jenna.

The End of Sherry by Bruce Berger Spotlight

Praise for The End of Sherry

“Here is a wide-eyed writer with curiosity, patience and observational skills to follow leads, pursue histories, apply the artistry that takes the reader down the same paths he visits.” – Los Angeles Times

“Berger takes his place with Annie Dillard and Barry Lopez.” – San Diego Tribune

The End of the Sherry has just won the 2014 Silver Medal for the most outstanding nonfiction book of the year awarded by the Independent Publishers Association. Craig Manning of Independent Publishers Magazine writes,

“Raucous adventure transpires… Berger writes richly and animatedly about the people he met, the places he explored, the spiritual subjects he parsed, and the unforgettable experiences he lives to the fullest during his time in Spain… Berger’s dynamic and lively prose proves thoroughly infectious…"

The Book

In 1965, Bruce Berger, a quixotic twenty-something American, finds himself abandoned in southern Spain with a car known as the Iron Lung and a dog named Og. By accident he finds work as a nightclub pianist and begins an alternate life that spans three years of the infamous Franco regime, and that inspires his account, The End of the Sherry (Aequitas, 2014; $USD Hardcover, $29.95; $USD 19.95 Paperback; Kindle USD$9.95)

Piano gigs led him from small towns on the Bay of Cádiz to the Mediterranean to a house of ill repute to a maximum-security prison to an American naval base to the fair in Jerez, whose very name, corrupted, gives us “sherry”. Non-musical gigs include working for a carnival act and selling fish.

But gigs are only a vantage point for Berger’s insatiable curiosity as he explores language, religion, drinking habits, movie culture, treatment of animals and above all the notorious police, the Guardia Civil. The account thus opens into a portrait of provincial Spain during the final decade of the Franco dictatorship.

Nor does Berger slight the personal, for he embarks on a romance with the band’s drummer and moves in with him, only to find that the ensuing restrictions on his writing lead to an understanding that the writer stands in a double relation to life, living it to the full while simultaneously regarding it as a predator needing sustenance for his art.

Frustrations with writing and the relationship lead him to leave Spain, and it is nearly twenty years before he returns to renew friendships and experience the a transformed Spain after the death of Franco. Now a democracy, fully integrated with the rest of Europe, it has gained freedom – but paradoxically lost the traditional culture that drew citizens together, for it has also gained chain stores, franchises, a coastline of high-rises, drug addiction, crime, and a population out of touch with each other, marooned before their TVs.

“I learned Spanish by immersion, mainly in sherry,” begins the book. Throughout the account sherry leads a double life, as drink and metaphor, and its disappearance brings The End of the Sherry to its title.

About the Author

Bruce Berger, was born in Evanston, Illinois, attended Yale University and the University of California—Berkeley. He is best known for a series of nonfictions books exploring the intersections of nature and culture, primarily in a desert setting. In addition to his books, his work has appeared in The New York Times, Orion, Outside, Barron’s, Sierra and many other publications. He was formerly a contributing editor at American Way, the magazine of American Airlines. In October 2008, he was sent by the State Department to represent the United States at the Mussoorie International Writer’s Festival in northern India, followed by a week of readings in New Delhi and Mumbai.

The Far End of Happy by Kathryn Craft Book Trailer Reveal and Giveaway!

To celebrate the book trailer reveal of The Far End of Happy, included in the post is a giveaway for a Landmark Fiction prize pack including Kathryn Craft’s backlist title The Art of Falling. Please take a moment to watch the video and enter!!!
ABOUT THE FAR END OF HAPPY:

The Far End of Happy is a powerful new novel based on author Kathryn Craft’s personal experience with a stand-off involving her husband.  Here Craft delivers “real, raw emotion” (Library Journal) exploring a marriage unraveled by mental illness; and one man’s spiral towards a violent conclusion that tests the courage, love, and hope of the three women he leaves behind.

When the emotionally troubled Jeff engages police in a deadly stand-off, his wife, mother-in-law, and mother struggle to understand why the man they love has turned his back on the life they have given him, the one they all believe is still worth living.

“Framing the novel within a 12-hour period keeps the pages turning (Library Journal).” Narrating from the alternating perspectives of three women, whose lives will be forever altered by Jeff Farnham, gives an intimate look at the steps a woman will take to get the help her husband so urgently needs while desperately trying to keep her children safe.

ABOUT KATHRYN CRAFT:

A former dance critic who wrote for The Morning Call daily newspaper in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for nineteen years. Craft wrote exclusively nonfiction until she was plunged in the kind of real-life drama that demands attention. In 1997, after fifteen years of marriage, her husband committed suicide in a police standoff, leaving her and their two young sons.

The Far End of Happy was born from Craft’s need to make sense of what her husband had done. Kathryn has been a leader in the southeastern Pennsylvania writing scene for more than a decade and is also the author of The Art of Falling. She lives in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Troika by Adam Pelzman Spotlight!

The lives of three damaged souls converge in an unforeseen way in Adam Pelzman’s sensuous literary debut novel, TROIKA (Berkley Trade; April 7, 2015). From a barren corner of Siberia to the sultry nightlife of Little Havana to the tiny confines of New York’s Upper East Side, Pelzman deftly crafts a three-pronged story that explores the timeless struggle to overcome trauma, to find beauty in loss and to discover transcendent love in the most unlikely places.

At twenty-three, Perla is wise beyond her years, but that wisdom cannot save her from a sad life.  A Cuban girl who came with her parents to Miami as a girl, she now works as an exotic dancer in a seedy Fort Lauderdale club. There seems to be little future for Perla but everything changes when Julian shows up one night at the club. Unlike most of the clientele, Julian seems intent on satisfying Perla’s needs more than his own, and they begin a series of dizzying rendezvous.

Perla knows nothing about Julian’s complicated past. Left in an orphanage by his drug-addicted mother after the death of his father—a legendary hunter—the Russian boy would witness human venality and his own killer instincts at a young age. Sponsored by a wealthy businessman, Julian is sent to America and adopted by an older couple. Forever an elusive outsider, he parlays his sponsor’s lessons and financial legacy into a vast fortune. But wealth cannot protect him from further tragedy that involved his beloved wife, Sophie, which has permanently altered the dynamic of their love.

Sexual hunger and emotional need keep Julian returning to Perla.   But, when Sophie learns of the liaison, her reaction surprises them all. What transpires heals wounds and proves that even in suffering there can be joy.

Adam Pelzman studied Russian literature at the University of Pennsylvania and received a law degree from UCLA. Born in Seattle and raised in northern New Jersey, he has spent most of his life in New York City, where he now lives with his son.

A Pocket Star EBook Kentucky Derb-E Treat!

And what a coincidence!  Just today, Terri Osburn gives Colette Auclair a shout out in USA Today Happy Ever After blog:

The Kentucky Derby is just one week away and we are highlighting the EBooks Thrown, Jumped, and Branded in Colette Auclair’s award-winning Aspen Valley series!

THROWN (December 2013; $5.99) is the first book in The Aspen Valley Series.  Professional horse trainer Amanda Vogel dreams of riding jumpers in the Olympics, but after seeing her best friend die in a riding accident, she’s so traumatized she can’t compete. Broke and desperate, she takes a summer job in Aspen teaching some big-shot widowed movie star’s spoiled daughters to ride—and braces herself for three miserable months. But the movie star is funny, down-to-earth, and gorgeous—and his spoiled daughters are just desperate for a mother figure. By Labor Day, she has to choose between capturing a gold medal…and the man who has captured her heart.

JUMPED (August 2014; $5.99), the second book in The Aspen Valley Series, is Colette Auclair’s steamy sequel to her “page-turning debut” (Library Journal), Thrown. A young woman in the equestrian fashion business finds herself head over heels for her ex-husband.  Thoroughly enjoying herself at her best friend Amanda’s wedding, Beth is shocked when she is seated next to her ex-husband, Finn, at the reception. Determined to not let this fluster her, Beth strikes up a conversation only to learn Finn isn’t the same man she walked away from.

Relieved the reception is over, Beth is looking forward to a relaxing weekend against the beautiful backdrop of sunny Aspen at Amanda and Grady’s estate.  Little does she know Finn will be partaking in the weekend activities.  But just as Beth decides to keep as much distance between her and Finn as possible, Finn has a terrible accident and Beth is stuck being his bedside nurse.  Over the course of the weekend, Beth and Finn discover that the wounds of their failed marriage are not all that’s left. There are sparks…and hope. But just as they decide to give it another try, Finn confesses a huge secret that could destroy everything he’s fought to get back—Beth, their relationship, and another chance at love.  Will Beth turn away, or will she take a leap of faith and say “I do” once (again) and for all?

BRANDED (December 2014; $5.99), the third book in The Aspen Valley Series, will take readers on a wild and dreamy ride through the beautiful valleys and mountains of Colorado.  Professional, polite, and pearl-wearing, dressage rider and resort consultant Cordy Sims is the last person anyone would expect to initiate a weekend of debauchery. And yet, that’s exactly what she does after meeting a handsome stranger at an Aspen resort. Agreeing that they’ll leave personal details at the door, they indulge in a memorable weekend of carnal recreation. On Sunday night, Cordy doesn’t want to leave this charming, seductive man, but she must play by her own rules.

On Monday, Cordy sits in a meeting at the ad agency that’s hired her as a freelancer, and her professional and personal worlds collide. Turns out agency owner Jack Cormier looks just as good in the boardroom as he did in the bedroom. Forced to work together, Cordy and Jack can’t ignore the chemistry that crackles between them, or the deeper feelings that have developed. But secrets and scars from their pasts may prove too formidable, even for a love that’s as powerful as it is unexpected.

Praise for The Aspen Valley Series:

“The story portrays two convincingly flawed but likeable characters who find each other’s aults both provocative and exciting, as they try to decide whether a second chance at marriage is worth the risk.”
—Publishers Weekly on Jumped

“Harris, the Brunswicks’ chef, is a clairvoyant Cupid, full of honest evaluations of people and their love lives. He adds a spark to the story as Auclair continues to build her cast of series characters and develop their varied personalities.”
—Library Journal on Jumped

“In JUMPED, the author returns to the Aspen area with many of the same characters that were in her well–received debut novel, THROWN…Major and minor characters are interesting and likable, and the friendships add to the primary romance. There will be at least one more book in the series. Look for BRANDED to release in December. If you like horses, a tangled relationship, and a series that flows from one book to the next, check out these titles.”

“If you’re looking for a highly entertaining, fast-paced, horsey beach read, Jumped should fill the bill.”
—Horse Nation on Jumped

“There is enough tension among all the forces at play to keep the pages turning. Debut novelist Auclair is a 2012 Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Finalist, winner of the 2011 Winter Rose Contest, and a finalist in the 2011 Cleveland Rocks Romance Contest.  Recommended for most romance fans.”
—Library Journal on Thrown

“Romantic fiction with an equestrian theme gets a fun new twist in this novel which follows trainer Amanda Vogel… the star is single, handsome, and has the hots for Amanda. But both characters are carrying hefty loads of their own baggage, and as they navigate through various dramas and horse-related mishaps, the layers (both physical and psychological) start to come off. Thrown weaves horses into the story with a practiced tone, and the accuracy of equine knowledge and horse people adds to the plot. For a fun, entertaining read, be sure to pick up this debut novel by Colette Auclair.”
—Horse & Style on Thrown

“Totally accurate, as far as HorseGirls go…Colette Auclair nails the horse stuff…whether it’s describing Amanda’s selection of appropriate mounts for Grady’s beginner daughters, or setting up a human cross-country course for the girls to play Olympics over, or accurately detailing an episode of colic (including the joy when the horse finally poops), or explaining the feeling of connecting with a once-in-a-lifetime horse…my favorite part about the book, aside from the discussions of how horse training prepares just about anyone for human training…is the humor…Aside from getting the horse stuff right, the characters are also well-developed…The story is quite a page-turner, so be prepared to be completely unable to stop–like a runaway horse except actually fun.  And the book does have one pretty detailed sex scene and multiple explicit make out sessions, so it’s not for kids. Bottom line: if you like romantic comedies, you’ll definitely enjoy Thrown.”
