My Thoughts

Lilies of the Bowery tells the story of a young woman and her journey with her mother and brother from Italy to New York City. Joan Passerini, her mother Francesca and her brother Luca leave Italy to come to America to be with Giovanni Passerini, father, and husband, who came to America to find work and a place for them all to live. When they arrive Giovanni is not there to meet them and they end up going to a church for refuge where a place to live and jobs are obtained for Francesca and Luca. Francesca is pregnant but must still work. Joan, on the other hand, has a disability that makes it difficult for her to walk, she has undiagnosed cerebral palsy that only affects her legs.

Joan wants to contribute to the household and finds a job as a seamstress at a laundry run by Paloma. Paloma is a beautiful young woman who is quiet, haunted and secretive. Joan comes to have an attraction to Paloma and it is reciprocated. The love between the two grows from kisses to a sweet love affair. They need to keep this quiet as a relationship such as they have is a sin. 
As Joan continues to work at the laundry, she learns Paloma's secrets. The reader not only learns about this lesbian love affair but we see how life was back in 1914 in NYC. The Bowery could be a dangerous place to live and tenement life was a hard life, especially since they don't speak English.There are good things though in Joans life with Paloma, they go to the Nickelodeon to see Charlie Chaplin. Joan has her first ride in the Subway which terrifies her, and she goes to Central Park for the first time.
In writing this story it is obvious that the author has done a lot of research into this time in American history, prior to WWI, the hardships of the immigrants, whether Italian, Irish or Chinese. Language barriers and class were definitely a hard thing to overcome. Although Joan and her family and even Paloma, appeared to have a bit more than some, but everyone had to work. 

I found this book interesting in that the lesbian relationship that Joan and Paloma have is very sweet, but they know that they need to keep it a secret from everyone. In spite of this, their relationship grows. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly.

I used a hard copy map, one which included the entire Pony Express trail on it, to mark where Delsie and Myles would be stopping each night. Not only did this help me know which home stations they would be lodging in, but I was also able to see which prominent settlements or landmarks they would pass by on a given day. All the stations mentioned in the book were actually used by the Pony Express.

Chapter One

“Gun, Smithers!”

Lord Brampton held his hand out expectantly; arm rigid,

fingertips twiddling with impatience; all the while never taking his

eyes off the fearsome black rhino grazing placidly in the distance.

I carefully handed him the heavy elephant gun, making

sure the muzzle was pointing well away from either his lordship

or myself. Two great bullets were loaded in those chambers. The

hammers were at half-cock, but I’d learned the hard way it was

always best to be safe…insofar as that was possible. I regret to

say, however, that when in the company of my master, when he

was in the company of his guns, that possibility didn’t always

exist.

But, so far so good; Lord Brampton’s fingers curled

around the polished walnut of the stock. There was a momentary

unease when one digit slid unerringly past the trigger guard, but

then it was out again without any harm being done.

That part of my duty successfully completed, I pulled the

small brass telescope from my belt and leveled it at the beast. A

moment later the head of the bull wobbled into view. He was big

to the naked eye at a hundred yards, but massive in the lens, his

great horns jutting up and down while he grazed. We were

downwind of him and, so far, unsighted.

Lord Brampton leveled the great rifle at the brute and

sited down the shiny blue steel of the twin barrels.

“Head will look good in the gunroom, what?” His

lordship rumbled confidently in a voice too loud to be a whisper.

The rhino’s ears twitched, and I felt my grip on the telescope

tighten, but he was only flicking away some flies.

My own voice was a hoarse whistle as I cautioned His

Grace to silence.

“Nonsense,” he scoffed, “Trouble with you, Smithers,

you worry too much.”

I knew better, of course, but I also knew better than to

remonstrate further. My master was in one of his more

quarrelsome moods. It was always this way when his old wound

was bothering him.

To accent the point, an angry growl erupted from his

abdomen – the medical legacy of having so much of his

intestines removed at Balaclava.

The rhino’s ears twitched again, then centered; his great

head rising while he peered short-sightedly in our direction. I

found myself softly keening, willing Lord Brampton to pull the

trigger.

At last there was a deafening report as the gun

discharged. A few yards beyond and to the left of the beast a

large spurt of dust heralded the usual complete miss. With a

sinking heart, I focused back on him. When I did so, I saw that

he, in turn, was now focusing on me, his eyes wide with surprise.

Then angrily, they narrowed.

Oh dear.

Matt lay on his bed, opening and closing his palm and waiting for the pain to subside. In the old days, when the injury was fresh, this kind of pain was something eh could only dream about–manageable, workable. But now?
Every pang sent his mind whirring back to the phone. The texts from his physical therapist. The call for the majors that he still hadn’t gotten.
He rolled over, careful not to put any weight on his hand, and got to his feet.
He’d never paced before, but this seemed like the time for it. When he had a problem that couldn’t be solved.
And when Shay still wasn’t home…
He pushed that thought away, too. What should it matter to him whether or not Shay got home at a reasonable time? It was a bachelorette party. They should be out all night, and they’d deserve it if they were.
Just so long as it was just the two of them…
He shook his head and turned on his heel. Yes, pacing was good. Pacing at least made him feel like he was doing something instead of just sitting there staring at the ceiling. At least while he was moving he could–
The door burst open and then, just as quick, slammed shut with Shay now leaning against the white door.
“Okay, so we need a couple ground rules,” she huffed a strand of her dark hair out of her face.
“Um…hello to you too?” He stopped short and surveyed her, trying to determine if she was drunk.
She wasn’t swaying, her eyes weren’t glass or half lidded. Her hair was a little haphazard, but it was nothing unmanageable. In face, if it wasn’t for the red glow on her cheeks she might have looked completely normal.
Normal, of course, in the way that Shay was normal–her slender body wrapped in the slinkiest black dress he’d ever seen. The collar dipped just low enough for him to catch a trace of her cleavage, but then–
He internally shook his head again. Impassive. That was the new stance. Whatever she did, he was impassive.
No matter how fuckable she looked in her shiny red heels.
“We…I’m not sure where to start.”
“Probably with an aspirin. Are you drunk?” He asked.
She shook her head furiously. “I stopped drinking hours ago when I finally decided that…”
She trailed off again, then took a deep breath and said. “I just poured Andy into bed. Logan was already asleep.”
“Okay.” He nodded.
“They’re both pretty knocked out. It’s just you and me.”
The huskiness in her voice gave him pause, but he said, “Good, if we play Yahtzee I’ll know I can yell.”
“No. Listen. I…We need some rules.”
“Like not barging into my bedroom?” The corner of his mouth quirked up and she rolled her eyes.
“Don’t make me change my mind.”
“That’s a big ask when I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about,” he said.
She nodded. “Right, right. Well…look, I’ve been thinking. This thing between us. It’s not going away. I don’t think it’s going to and I think it’s been there for a lot longer than either of us will admit.”
He stayed silent, unsure whether to trust whether she really meant what he thought she meant. And if she did…
His gaze flicked to the messy tangle of his sheets. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying we need some rules.”
“What, like Pretty Woman? No kissing?”
“How the hell do you know the rule in Pretty Woman?”
“I’m a man, I’m not dead.”
She shook her head. “Right. Not important. Rules. We need to, I don’t know, agree that whatever we do is confined to our bedrooms. No PDA. We’re not a couple.”
“So…you want me as your booty call?”
“Yes, I guess. My very secret, temporary booty call.”
“How temporary?”
“Just until we’re off the island. By then, we’ll have all this out of our systems and we can find people we’re more compatible with without wondering, you know–“
“What would have happened if we’d slept together more than we already have?”
“Right.”
“You know you’re crazy, right?”
She nodded. “Yup. Now take off your pants.”
