Great Summer Reads! Day 19

Britney Mills was born in Utah but parts of her heart lie in Boston, Washington D.C. and Germany. Her love of writing began with the third grade book her teacher assigned her to write and she spent hours hidden behind her mother's couch writing pages and pages about knights and castles. Now she writes about romance. Go figure.

When she's not mothering her 4 small children, writing or reading, she's probably out playing a sport, going on a hike, or binge watching a murder mystery series. The way to her heart is through homemade chocolate chip cookies and five minutes peace.

A self-made billionaire, his real estate agent and three weeks to find the right property.
Jackson Walker hasn't had the best family life. Growing up in the foster system in Australia, it wasn’t until he met his college football coach that he understood what a normal family looked like. When he gets the call that Coach has passed away, he returns to California for the funeral and to find a place to honor the man.

Hailey Montgomery threw herself into real estate soon after breaking up with her boyfriend nearly five years ago. She’s been working to build a name for herself and when the chance to make partner at her firm becomes available, she jumps at the chance. But the only way to achieve that distinction is to find a commercial property for the guy she’s nicknamed ‘Golden Boy’ from all the stories her father told about him.

As spending time together brings them closer, the trust between them is called into question. Can they work through what’s happened in their individual pasts to create a relationship that will last?

Eager to be done with this weird turn of events, I flipped the small lock clip and quickly opened the safe deposit box. I threw the lid back expecting to find it empty. If anyone had been a fly on the wall, they surely would have laughed as I threw my hands up and jumped back when I looked inside the box.
Aunt Mary's hand shot to her mouth to stifle a scream, and I felt the blood rush to my head as my heart hammered against my chest. Dizzy and sure I would fall over, I plunked into one of the chairs. Reflexively, I slammed the top shut as if the contents could strike us like a snake. We sat there gawking at each other. Aunt Mary was the first to make another move for the box. She touched the edge gently as if it was electrified and then pushed up the lid and flipped it back quickly.

“Go ahead. Take them out and line them up,” she ordered as she pointed at the contents of the box.
The smell of money escaped from the box and filled the small area. My hands trembled as I gingerly removed the bundles of currency from the box. I stacked each banded pile of US currency neatly on the left, euros in the center and what looked like pesos on the right. There were all varieties of denominations, and by the time they were stacked they were four inches high. Mary and I exchanged nervous looks. She was as overwhelmed as I was. Next, I removed three gold bars that were difficult to pick up and laid them below the piles of currency.
Unable to restrain herself, Aunt Mary picked up a bar and inspected it as if she knew what examination of a gold bar entailed. Obviously, she didn't, but I let her have her moment. When she was satisfied, she placed the bar down gingerly.
Next, I removed a small black velvet bag. I pulled the strings of the bag apart and peeked inside. I could only see a black abyss. Something was in there. I could feel something round and small, like pebbles, through the material. I turned the bag onto its side and coaxed the contents out onto the copy of the document I had signed. Six small, translucent stones resembling bits of broken glass tumbled out. Unable to grip one with the glove, I rolled it forward into my palm with my finger. I held it up to the fluorescent light as if I were a practiced jeweler who had misplaced my jeweler's loop.
“These are blood diamonds,” Aunt Mary said with great authority.
“You don't know that!” I snapped.
“I watch PBS, NOVA, and saw that movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. Blood Diamonds.” She banged the table hard for emphasis and I nearly peed my pants from nerves.
“Jesus, what should I do. Do I tell them what's in here? Should I turn all this money over and sign it away? Or will they think I only cooperated because the jig was up and I’d been caught red-handed? You think they will arrest me on the spot? How will I make bail?” The questions were coming out rapid-fire. I pointed at the pile of currency and diamonds on the table. “Oh my God, whatever I do, this looks bad, Aunt Mary. Beyond bad.”

Another Shot by Stephen Anthomy Brotherton Book Spotlght!

Another Shot

“It used to make me feel special, the fact that they knew me, knew what I wanted, but it had soured with repetition. I’d become my drink order – that’s what it felt like. But it was okay. People watching in this place made me feel part of the world, got me away from the house for a few hours. And it was here she came back to me. I hadn’t seen her for three decades and suddenly there she was, standing next to my table.
‘Hello, Freddie’.”

Another Shot tells the story of Freddie and Jo-Jo, who are reunited in a coffee shop thirty-five years after the end of their teenage romance. Jo-Jo finds Freddie through a mutual friend, and tells him that she is emigrating following the death of her husband. She gives him a photograph of the two of them on their first weekend away, a trip to Blackpool.

How they originally met, why they parted, what happens in their lives apart is all told through a series of flashbacks. These memories feed into events when they meet up again and explain why, despite the passage of time and the intensity of their still simmering love, there is no future for their relationship.

This is Jo-Jo reflecting on her Dad and his love of Shelley. Jo-Jo is angry about her dad’s affair and what she sees as a betrayal of her mum, but she can’t help admiring the strength of her dad’s love and the difficult decision he has to make. ‘Jo-Jo – Dad learned his moonbeams and kisses poem off by heart, reciting it at every opportunity. I’d close my eyes and listen, entranced with the thought that you could love someone that much. I used to dream about Dad flying across a starry night sky on a magic carpet, searching for Mum, risking everything for a single kiss. I wanted to find my own Shelley. Dad met his woman in the park, but he stayed with Mum, sacrificed everything to look after her. Moonbeams and kisses versus loyalty and commitment. What a choice.’

‘I was born in Walsall, grew up in the West Midlands and now live in Telford with my two cats, Boris and Tai. After working in the health and social care sector for over thirty years, I have now taken early retirement to write the trilogy that has been rooted in my head for most of my life.

Another Shot is the first book in the Shots trilogy, which is based on a first love relationship I had as a teenager. It tells the story of Freddie and Jo-Jo, who are reunited in a coffee shop three decades after the end of their teenage romance. How they originally met, why they parted, what happens in their lives apart, and what happens when they reunite is all told through a series of first person vignettes. The second book, An Extra Shot, will be published in July 2019. I am currently working on the final instalment.

Getting these stories down on paper has been a cathartic process. I hope you enjoy them. ‘

Bittersweet Alliance by Kathleen Rowland Book Release Spotlight! @RowlandKathleen

Will a snap decision change their lives forever?

Bizarre kidnappings stun the Big Island of Hawaii, pulling Danker Donahue back into the game and forcing him to partner with Jolene Kualoha, the woman who left him seven years ago when his DNA showed up in paternity lawsuit. The prejudice-motivated hate crimes are the wildest anyone has ever seen. Victims are being poisoned then released once the ransoms are paid, many losing their lives.

In the shadow of Jolene's success as a helicopter pilot, a troubled woman develops a fixation on Jolene and imitates her appearance. Matters turn dark when the copycat is shot dead. Was Jolene the target? Threats mount when she barely survives an accident after her brake cables are severed.

When these crimes threaten her sanity, Jolene is forced to trust the one person she thought she’d lost forever, Danker. Instantly, sparks fly between them, and as much as she wants to rekindle their relationship, she must protect her heart.

An old enemy, Seamus McGinn, breaks out of a maximum-security prison and invites Danker to a meet-up. Surprisingly, the kidnapper joins forces with McGinn along with his sick fans. McGinn trumpets his ‘murders by ice pick’, and it’s up to Danker to stop him. The whole island is on edge with a live feed from the maniac’s website.

In a stolen moment, Jolene shows him hope, and he makes a snap decision that will change their lives forever. Will he make it back to her?

Excerpt from the beginning of Chapter One

Seven years since their breakup, Jolene Kualoha spotted Danker Donahue, ambling from the parking lot toward the store. She recognized him by his height and long gait. Wind from the north ruffled his hair and brought a bone-biting chill to her heart. Nuts, here he was, ducking his head to miss the bell overhead. It tinkled, and a strange twisting sensation hit her in the stomach.
This happened at the Kalua-Kona Food Emporium on a Sunday morning in July. She stared from where she stood near the avocados. His dangerous edge drew her in, but she turned her back to him. Her body reverberated like when her cellphone was on vibrate in her pocket. Stunned with minor electric shock, she froze.  Maybe he wouldn’t see her. Wouldn’t recognize the back of her head or the once familiar shape of her ass.
Was someone waiting for him in the parking lot? Someone like Louella, the baby’s momma who’d summoned him for an immediate DNA test? For a split second, she craned her head around but didn’t see her with him.
She and Danker were a couple when the test confirmed his fatherhood. Her heart ached at the memory. Love hurt, but that wasn’t all. Loneliness hurt. Losing someone hurt. Decision-making hurt when you force yourself to do the right thing.
She’d pulled away, giving him space to work on his previous relationship for the sake of their child. The most shameful thing a woman can do is take parents away from a baby, and this began her year of stubborn steadfastness.
I did the breakup rituals. Got the dramatic haircut. Engraved a piece of jewelry he got me with a new message. Deleted the photos that made me cry.
To have been his woman was like living where the air flowered with jasmine, and the weather day after day was flawless, but the forecast was a hurricane.
Older didn’t mean wiser. All this time she’d dreaded running into him, sometimes dressing in expectation of it. If she did see him again, she wanted to look good. Today she looked like crap, but what did it matter? His reason for being on the Big Island had nothing to do with her, not in a personal way. Tomorrow they’d meet at the FBI field office to collaborate on a serial kidnapping case. She’d wear a sleeveless linen dress, open-toed pumps, and bring the accordion file full of notes and newspaper clippings she’d gathered.
The perpetrator targeted wealthy Hawaiians with social capital, the kind of people seen on television or featured in newspapers when they donated money to charities. The latest missing person, Pua Iona, owned Iona Hawaiian Rugs and was an acquaintance of hers. Not that they shared the same social strata, but they’d volunteered together at an artisans’ market to boost Hawaiian crafts. After Pua went missing and fit the criminal’s modus operandi, Mayor Billy Kim, frustrated with police progress, contacted Jolene’s former boss from California, FBI Agent Gary Guhleman, cowboyish in dress but wise in judgement.
Guhleman didn’t need to tell her Hawaiians resisted outside intrusions. “You know everyone,” he’d said. “Witnesses will share what they know.” The agent and his wife had retired, rather semi-retired, here in Kona. Soon after she and Guhleman had spoken, he called in Danker Donahue to consult. “You remember him, right?”
“Gosh, let me think.” She and Danker went hot and heavy after the Long Beach case that ended with the arrest of mobster Seamus McGinn.
Just then Danker spoke to someone with his rich Midwestern drawl, typical of California transplants. It was the first time she’d heard his voice in seven years after hearing it every day for ten months. She hardened like a turtle on a rock except for a slight turn of her head. He removed an earbud from his right ear and placed it in a protective case.
His longer dark hair, broad shoulders, and square jaw evoked an intense mix of emotions. A car crash of desire. There was nothing more frightening than desiring a freefall. It wasn’t just the sex. Her heart had burst with happiness making her believe love conquered all. It hadn’t.
In profile, the skin of his face was not as smooth. His craggier appearance reflected who he was, a loner with little concern about his well-being. The work he’d chosen reinforced his inclination toward secretive and wary, trusting few people.
She sighed at his elegance.  So beautiful in a manly way, and he was once was hers.
She’d let him go.
No, she’d pushed him away and cut all ties.

Excerpt
 FROM CHAPTER 1

Gregory pushed his already drying hair back off his forehead. “Is the NIMBY group organized? Do they have a leader, a spokesperson?”
“It’s my Aunt Adele, in fact,” I said. “She’s right in the thick of it. She says it makes her feel like she’s doing something worthwhile again. She was apparently quite the protester back in the sixties.”
“I can totally see that, Robbie,” Lou said. “She’s a toughie, your aunt.”
“I’ll say.” Adele was the reason I, a California girl, was here in southern Indiana at all, instead of back in Santa Barbara where I’d grown up. After my mom died suddenly, my aunt had taken me to visit a country store full of antique cookware. We were surprised to learn the store was for sale. Adele encouraged me to buy it, and now I was the proud proprietor of Pans ’N Pancakes. It was a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant in a renovated country store, with vintage cooking implements for sale and three B&B rooms upstairs. I was living my dream, complete with an apartment behind the store, a hunky boyfriend, and a cat.
Gregory stared out at the water, having assumed the same seated position as Lou. “I’m on sabbatical right now,” he began. He twisted to face us. “I have some pretty strong feelings about not ruining a beautiful place just so rich people can come and pretend to enjoy it. I’d like to meet your aunt, Robbie, if you’ll introduce us. I can offer my legal services to the group on a pro bono basis.”
“She’ll appreciate that,” I said. “I’d be happy to hook you two up. I’m sure they’re going to need legal advice. She’s already planning a protest that’ll stop traffic on the main road to Nashville, and who knows what else.”
Lou reached out a hand and squeezed Gregory’s bare shoulder. “You’re Mr. Awesome, you know that?”
His cheeks pinked. “Not at all. But I do like to support worthy causes.” He pushed up to standing. “How about another swim, ladies?”
“You go,” I said to Lou. “I’m going to lie here and do nothing.”
He extended a hand to Lou and didn’t let go of it. After I watched them run hand in hand splashing into the water, I lay back and closed my eyes. Good.
Lou might have found herself a new man. Adele was going to get some needed help. And maybe that resort wouldn’t get built, after all.
