The Woman with Wings by James MacManus Blog Tour! @jamesmac1x @EndeavourQuill

"From the author of critically acclaimed works of historical fiction such as, Midnight in Berlin, and Ike and Kay, comes The Woman with Wings, a tale steeped in magical realism which follows one woman's journey of self discovery"

November 7th 2019, RRP  £7.99, paperback, available at Amazon

Also available in ebook

In this heart-warming tale of female empowerment, a young woman comes to terms with the revelation that she may be able to fly.

Alison Spedding is a loner; no real friends, no boyfriend and a job in which she goes unnoticed. At thirty-two, her only passion is birdwatching.

One afternoon, high on a Scottish mountain, earnestly waiting for the rarest of sights – a white tailed eagle returning to its nest – she slips, falling silently. In shock, her fellow twitchers return to the hostel to raise the alarm, heavy with the realisation that she must be dead. What they find shocks them even more. Alison is already there, alive and unscathed…

Further similar episodes cause Alison’s grip on reality to slip, her mind spiralling towards breaking point. In her dreams she sees a huge shadow on the ground, as if there was a creature above her, a creature with huge wings…

Her infatuated colleague Jed is concerned. Can he intervene before Alison finally loses control?

This is an extraordinary novel, exploring one woman’s identity whilst posing universal questions: Who is she? Where does she belong? And must she accept her fate, or can she spread her wings and be free at last?

“In this psychological thriller James MacManus has created an intriguing heroine for our times: beneath her big, open heart Alison Spedding reveals a tantalising mystery that leaves a reader desperate to know whether she really can take wing and find a new life.” - Karen Robinson, Editor of the Sunday Times Book Club

James MacManus has worked in the newspaper business for 46 years. He is currently the Managing Director of the Times Literary Supplement.

He is the author of On the Broken Shore (The Language of the Sea, UK edition), and Ocean Devil: The Life and Legend of George Hogg which was made into a film starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Duckworth will publish the UK edition of Black Venus on February 27th 2014.The UK edition follows the successful launch of the novel in the US by Thomas Dunne books of New York.

My Review

I love to cook and I collect cookbooks and recipes. I am always looking for something different and I actually did find a few in the book that I want to try.
A Bad Hair Day Cookbook is unique in the way that it shares not only recipes but excerpts and anecdotes written by hairstylist and savvy sleuth Marla Vail.
Marla Vail is a hairstylist who is known for exposing secrets. Marla lives in Florida with her detective husband along with his two daughters. She uses her abilities to pursue justice.

In the book, there is an introduction by Marla Vail and she explains a little about who she is and a bit about her recipes. There is also a section on cooking tips like what to do with herbs, and what you can do with bananas, fresh ginger, and using eggplant in a lot of recipes. This section also has how to make gravy by making a roux and do you use flour or cornstarch for the roux. Wonder how to cook corn in the husk? The book has that.

The recipe section has appetizers, entrees, breads, beverages, sauces, soups, veggies, meats, and desserts. Interspersed in the recipes are excerpts from various books by the author. I liked the section that had Themed Menus, holiday dinners, books with recipes and a Sabbath dinner. Lots of fun information in this book that made it hard to put down. I did bookmark quite a few of the recipes. Easy to follow too!

If you love a cozy mystery book, this is for you and as a  plus, you get lots of recipes!  I highly recommend getting this book and cook something for your family or just you and read a few excerpts also!

I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

Distant Memory by Maureen A. Miller Book Blitz and Giveaway! @MaureenAMiller @XpressoTours

Distant Memory
Maureen A. Miller
Publication date: November 25th 2019
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

From USA TODAY bestselling author, Maureen A. Miller comes this romantic thriller.
Whose life does Hollie Musgrave recall? Is it even her own?
Dreams of a house Hollie has never been to plague her. They haunted her since childhood when her mother used to joke about reincarnation. Now, as an adult, the dreams have returned. Desperate for relief she seeks out a hypnotist to pry any clues from her latent memories. One notion leads her to a farmhouse hundreds of miles away.
Todd Hewitt bought the farmhouse in Pennsylvania in search of seclusion after the drama of the past three years. When a woman shows up on his doorstep he assumes she is just another reporter looking for an interview, however, her tale is too absurd to be a hoax.
Together they try to piece together her missing past.
And someone has been waiting for that.
Someone has been waiting for Hollie to remember.
EXCERPT:
“You should go.”
The words were husky. Uttered from a woman who was struggling to maintain her composure. Skin that was normally effused with sunshine was pulled taut across high cheekbones making the shadows below her eyes more prevalent.
He considered her warning. Seriously considered it.
“I should,” he hedged. “But I won’t.”
Solemn eyes rose to meet his.
“For God’s sake, why? You don’t need this. It was a big mistake to come down here. I was a fool to encourage you.”
Setting aside any reservations he might have, he couldn’t stand to see her fighting to hold herself together. Someone was tormenting this woman and it ticked him off.
“Look,” he set the note down, watching her eyes follow the motion. “I could point out that it’s not just about you. Whatever is going on, whatever these warnings are–they clearly deal with the house I’m living in. Everything that has happened to you happened directly after visiting my home. That makes it personal for me.” He paused. “Yeah, there’s that–or–” deep breath, “–I could admit that for the first time in three years I’ve met someone I’d like to know more about–that I’d like to spend time with.”
A shrug that didn’t come easily hefted his shoulders. “And you’re right. I have to decide if my desire to spend time with you is strong enough to deal with these threats–this stalking that you’ve been subjected to. Do I really want that sort of conflict in my very quiet, very private life?”
Hollie’s face pinched in pain and she looked away from him. “I guess I know the answer to that.”
“Do you?”

Excerpt
“Oh, I get where you are going… automatic responses. Right,” he leaned toward her, “So you never have an automatic response to something?”
“Oh, no, I do, unfortunately. It’s imbedded in us as children. However, many times I stop myself. Prime example, I want to beat you over the head every time I see you, but I don’t do that now do I?” She put both of her hands up in question.
He bellowed out a laugh and lifted the dog to give it a kiss on the head. Charlie started wagging her tail frantically, which made him chuckle, “Yeah, Olivia, I get it. Just like I want to kiss you every time I see you, but I stop myself from trying to do that.” Once her jaw dropped, he pushed the puppy forward, and she reached for it.
One side of his mouth lifted, “Just a prime example.”

Bittersweet Tapestry by Kevin O'Connell Book Tour! #BittersweetTapestry #KevinOConnell #HFVBTBlogTours @hfvbt

Bittersweet Tapestry by Kevin O'Connell

Publication Date: November 1, 2019
Gortcullinane Press
eBook & Paperback
Series: The Derrynane Saga, Book Three
Genre: Historical Fiction
A dramatic decade has passed since sixteen-year-old Eileen O’Connell first departed her family’s sanctuary at remote Derrynane on the Kerry coast to become the wife of one of the wealthiest men in Ireland and the mistress of John O’Connor’s Ballyhar – only to have her elderly husband die within months of the marriage. Unhappily returned to Derrynane, within a year, under the auspices of their uncle, a general in the armies of Maria Theresa, Eileen and her sister, Abigail departed for Vienna and a life neither could have ever imagined – one at the dizzying heights of the Hapsburg empire and court, where Abigail ultimately became principal lady-in-waiting to the Empress herself, whilst Eileen, for nine momentous years, served as governess to the Empress’s youngest daughter – during which time Maria Antonia, whom Eileen still calls ‘my wee little archduchess’, has become Marie Antoinette, dauphine of France, though she continues to refer to her beloved governess as “Mama”.

As Bittersweet Tapestry opens, it is the High Summer of 1770. Having escorted the future Queen of France from Vienna to her new life, Eileen and her husband, Captain Arthur O’Leary of the Hungarian Hussars, along with their little boy and Eileen’s treasured friend (and former servant) Anna Pfeffer are establishing themselves in Ireland. Their ties to Catholic Europe remain close and strong; in addition to Abigail and her O’Sullivan family and General O’Connell, his wife and young daughter in Vienna, their brother Daniel is an officer in the Irish Brigade of the armies of Louis XV, whilst their youngest brother, Hugh, is studying at École Militaire in Paris, his path to a commission in the Dillons’ Regiment of the Brigade. His gentle Austrian friendship with Maria Antonia having inevitably waned, Hugh’s relationship with the strikingly-beautiful young widowed Princess Marie Thérèse Louise of Savoy is blossoming.

Though happily ensconced at Rathleigh House, the O’Leary family estate in County Cork, being prominent amongst those families which are the remnants of the old Gaelic order in the area, Eileen and Art find that the dark cloud of the Protestant Ascendancy hovers heavily, at times threateningly, over them. Bittersweet Tapestry is a tale of stark contrasts – between Hugh’s life of increasing prominence amidst the glitter and intrigue of the French court and Art and Eileen’s in English-occupied Ireland – especially as the latter progresses into a dark, violent and bloody tale . . . ultimately involving an epic tragedy, which along with the events leading up to it and those occurring in its dramatic wake, will permanently impact the O’Learys, the O’Connells – and their far-flung circle of family and friends in Ireland and across Europe.

With his uniquely-descriptive prose, Kevin O'Connell again deftly weaves threads of historical fact and fancy to create a colourful fabric affording unique insights into the courts of eighteenth-century Catholic Europe as well as English-ruled Ireland. As the classic story unfolds amongst the O’Learys, the O'Connells, their friends and enemies, the tumultuously-dangerous worlds in which they dwell will continue to gradually – but inexorably – become even more so. Bittersweet Tapestry joins O’Connell’s well-received Beyond Derrynane and Two Journeys Home as The Derrynane Saga continues – an enthralling epic, presenting a sweeping chronicle, set against the larger drama of Europe in the early stages of significant – and, in the case of France – violent change.
