In a world where danger hides in plain sight and no one aspires to more than what they were born to, Inga must find the courage to break the oppressive chains she’s been bound with since birth.

As a maid in the infamous Kremlin, life in 16th-century Russia is bleak and treacherous. That is, until Taras arrives. Convinced that his mother’s death when he was a boy was no mere accident, he returned from England to discover what really happened. While there, he gains favor from the Tsar later known as Ivan the Terrible, the most brutal and notorious ruler ever to sit upon the throne of Russia. Ivan allows him to take a servant, and to save Inga from a brutal boyar intent on raping her, Taras requests Inga to stay in his chambers.

Up against the social confines of the time, the shadowy conspiracies that cloak their history, and the sexual politics of the Russian Imperial court, Inga and Taras must discover their past, plan for their future, and survive the brutality that permeates life within the four walls that tower over them all, or they may end up like so many citizens of ancient Russia: nothing but flesh and bone mortar for the stones of the Kremlin wall.

My Review
Citadel of Fire was a totally different type of historical fiction for my, same era I enjoy 1600's, but this one was about Russian history. This story depicted life in the Russian court and how very difficult life of a life it was for lowly born people. The weather was harsh and there seemed to always be fighting going on. When Inga was a small child she is taken in by a maid, Yehvah, to be trained as a maid and to live in the palace of the Tsar. Life is hard in the palace but Inga adapts. She meets Taras when she is young and then again when when she is a teenager. Taras has come back to Russia to find out how his mother died. He remembers the event but he was a child also. There relationship grows and in time Inga becomes his mistress.

This is the time in Russian history that Ivan the Terrible is on the throne, the reader meets him when he is a small child after the death of his father. He was named Grand Prince of Moscow and his mother acted as regent. When he was eight his mother died and the Boyars acted in his place in the government. These men were cruel to Ivan and his brother Yuri but when Ivan turned 16 he was crowned Tsar of all Russias.

This is a fast paced story that I found very enjoyable. It is about the personal relationship between Inga and Taras, and  life in the palace under Ivan. The story also tells of the Great Fire of 1547 that virtually wiped out Moscow and surrounding areas. Of course this novel is only the first in the trilogy so I imagine we learn more about Inga and Taras and the Tsar of Russia. My hubby also read this book, this is not the period or country in history that he typically enjoys but he liked the book, and we both look forward to reading the next two books in the series.

I received a copy of this book for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Interview with Chuck Driskell, author of To The Lions!

Today, I am pleased to have Chuck Driskell at Celticlady's Reviews to talk about his book To The Lions and a bit about his writing. Thank you Chuck!!

To the Lions by Chuck Driskell
Former Army Green Beret, Gage Hartline, makes a second appearance in Chuck Driskell’s latest espionage thriller To the Lions.
Having just completed a job, a mercenary with a strong moral compass takes a high paying job that sends him inside a Spanish prison to safeguard a cartel leader’s son who may be targeted by a rival syndicate, Los Leones.
Upon his arrival to the beautiful and charming Catalonian Spain, Gage falls for Justina, a Polish woman he rescues from a Russian club who is stuck in a precarious financial situation. His immediate attraction to her gives him a reason to earn the large payday at stake and as his situation deteriorates, she becomes his lifeline.
Fast paced and filled with action, romance and espionage this book has something for all lovers of suspense fiction. With action scenes that include prison brawls, gunfights and one-on-one combat each scene vibrates with intensity and well-defined characters who make the TO THE LIONS  exceptional.
To the Lions is surprising around every corner and the plot is full of energy and white knuckled excitement.

What sparked the idea for the Gage Hartline series?
This is a difficult question to answer.  I guess it was a number of things.  At the time, I was seeking representation after having submitted LAHN’S EDGE to a number of agents.  Numerous agents told me they liked LAHN’S but said it would be difficult to find a publisher for such an edgy book.  Several agents told me Patrick Lacher, the protagonist in LAHN’S, was unlikeable.  So, with THE DIARIES, I set out to create a character that I thought even my mother would like.  I also wanted to create an espionage novel that was patterned after some of the great ones from the 70s and 80s.
It should be noted that LAHN’S EDGE, the book with the “unlikeable” protagonist, has probably received more praise than any of my other books.  Personally, I don’t have to love a main character to enjoy a book.  I just need to find them interesting.

What are you working on at the minute?
This is a fun time because I have several books in the can and I can focus on making them better.  SEVEN YEARS DEAD will probably be published first.  Set in 1952, it follows a World War II veteran as he goes back to Germany to avenge a mass murder.  It’s not one of my typical thrillers.  It’s a book about growth.  I’m quite anxious to get it in readers’ hands.
I’m also halfway through the second draft of the next Gage Hartline novel.  It’s set primarily in Lima, Peru and revolves around a group of Americans who are pirating cocaine from the cartels.  I’m hopeful it turns out to be a good read.
Finally, I’m in final edits for the SPIRITWALKER TRILOGY.  Originally an epic novel, I’ve decided to cut it into three separate books.  Set in the late 1930s, it follows a Native American across the U.S. and into the belly of the burgeoning Third Reich as he tries to solve his close friend’s death.  It’s got suspense, mystery and a pretty heavy love story (for me, anyway) so…hopefully it will appeal to the masses.

Now that your book is optioned, what advice can you give writers who hope for the same outcome?
Make sure you have dynamic cover art and a great hook.  That sounds trite, but it’s true.  When the executive producer from Solipsist Films was perusing Amazon, the cover of TO THE LIONS caught his eye.  In fact, he was looking for another book.  But mine intrigued him so he purchased it.  Of course, had he not liked it, nothing would have ever happened.  So, if you’re putting out good books, make sure you match the quality of your writing with good marketing.  Every little detail is important!

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
If you’re just beginning, focus on the writing as much as possible.  Don’t get hung up on the industry or the gazillion other distractions that exist—turn off the internet, find a quiet place and just write.  When your book is done, go through it again.  And again.  And again.  Take a break.  Write something else.  Then come back to that first book after a few months.  Keep tightening it until you cannot make it better.  At that point, give it to several people who read that same genre.  These are your beta readers.
This is the most important part…tell those beta readers you thirst for their criticism.  Praise is great but, at this stage, you want that book to be the best it can be.  You need to know what could be better.  Then, filter their comments as best you can, make the changes that need to be made, and then you’re ready to move forward.  At that point you can do any number of things, such as seek an agent, submit the book yourself, enlist an editor, etc.  But that’s another conversation for another day…for now, write!

Did you face any problems with self-publishing?
Not really.  Just coming to the decision was hard enough.  I had a good agent who believed in me.  We had a number of close calls with big publishers.  I was just sick of waiting and tired of the mixed feedback I was receiving.  “Your book is too long.”  “Your book is too short.”  “Too much action.”  “Not enough action.”  “World War II books are dead.”  “World War II books are in.  You should write a World War II series.”  “We don’t want your books.  But would you like to be a ghost writer?”  And my personal favorite, “Can’t you throw in some Islamic terrorists?” (As if that isn’t being done by, oh…I dunno…everyone!)
My agent kept bemoaning the industry and I was seeing the changes myself.  I spoke to an author in my genre who’d left his major publisher and was self-publishing his series on Amazon.  He was, and is, killing it.  That cemented things for me.  Amazon gives authors such a fantastic platform of delivery , I decided to take the plunge.  It was a great decision for me.

Where do you see publishing going in the future?
Whew…I’m not intelligent enough to provide a good answer to this question.  There are so many talented people in the publishing industry that do a great job of delivering wonderful books to readers. I have a hard time believing that traditional publishing will go away.  But when I study Amazon alone, I shake my head in amazement.  They’re able to deliver books, electronically, on-demand and traditionally, around the globe and with such convenience and unparalleled selection.  It will be interesting to watch them refine their system in the coming years.  In my mind, their 5-star rating system is a tad flawed.  If they can improve the way customers discover quality books, whether self-published or traditionally published, I think it will further strengthen their position.

After everything that has happened, Grace goes to the Everglades to live with her grandmother, Birdee. She learns to scuba dive and starts boating with old man Rex, Birdee's casual friend/boyfriend.
One day while out in the marshes of the Everglades, Grace rescues an abused Florida panther, currently on the endangered list. The more she dives into the animal’s horrific condition, the more she ventures into the underground world of the roadside zoos that run rampant in Florida with a total disregard for the law. Eventually, she stumbles upon one large roadside zoo filled with a variety of endangered and illegal animals.
Before she can gather evidence and report her findings to the authorities, she is kidnapped by the ruthless owner and dragged deep into the Everglades for a hunting challenge. Only this time, Grace is the prey.
During a sick game of cat and mouse, Grace is offered one chance at survival. With a one-hour head start and very little supplies, time and skill are now all that stands between the hunter and the hunted.

MAVERICK TOUCH THE HIGHWAY

Nadia and Anabella head down to Houston, Texas, for what they thought would be a relaxing vacation. Nadia could work on her travel news articles for her boss in Cedar Rapids while Anabella caught a few rays of sunshine. Or that was the plan. Little did they know what trouble lurked inside the luxurious hotel nestled in the center of downtown Houston.

When Carlisle Ali introduces Anabella to his friend and brother-in-arms, Carter Jackson, all hell breaks loose for the Mavericks. Trouble never has a problem finding Nadia when she is out and about looking for a story. Be it Cedar Rapids or Houston, it doesn't matter. Nadia finds a way to cause chaos and disaster.
What happens when Mr. A and Mr. J go out on a hunt for the man who is terrorizing people along I-45, the interstate running through the heart of Houston? More importantly, what happens to Nadia and Mr. A when they are forced to face the feelings that have been boiling between them for over a year now?

About the Author
Ashley was born in Wichita, Kansas. She is the eldest of three. She has two brothers who she completely adores and who were the inspiration for her Alpha Lead Zayn. She has always enjoyed writing and using her creativity. This started at a young age in Kansas City, Missouri when her brother Ryan and her would take scraps of wood and paint different pictures on them. Eventually when her articulation of feelings and emotions gained depth she started writing Original Oratory while attending Clear Brook High School.

Ashley participated in her high school debate team and it was there that she learned the importance of the written word. She firmly believes that the pen is mightier than the sword and Ashley has never been one to hold back her opinion, or change her beliefs. She is open and honest about how she feels and has learned the moment you write down a thought, you better be able to back it.

Over the course of 15 years Ashley’s skills as a writer have dramatically changed. During college she used to write poetry when she was sad or down, needing an outlet to safely express what was on her mind. Since then, her poetry has taken a dive into a dark undertone. She writes about the pain of love and paints them with dark pictures of expression. She isn’t afraid to show the thoughts we all have but are too timid and/or shy to say.

Ashley’s first novel, Blood Purple is based on Algula vampires who dwelled in the Middle East and were forced from their home. The idea for this series spurred from one evening of Ashley researching her nationality after talking with her Aunt Pam about where her family originated. She and one of her friends did research on the folklore of that part of the world and found there was very little information about the paranormal genre and how it tied into the Middle East. Ashley took this idea and ran with it.

Ashley is married and lives in Houston with her husband Tony. They have two dogs named Toto and Doogie. They have been together for over 8 and a 1/2 years and he brings her more joy than she could ever imagine as a child. She loves to read and has been hooked on the romance genre ever since her life long best friend Laura gave her "Ashes to Ashes' by Tami Hoag to read when they were younger.

Ashley finds her strength through her family, especially her parents. They always support her in life, they push her to strive for greatness. There once was a motto that Ashley heard in her youth through her Taekwondo life 'Reach for the Stars' and that is what Ashley has always done. It was through her upbringing that the values Ashley has and display's came from. With her Parents always cheering her on in life she was able to grow up having faith in herself and her ability to conquer the world
.
My Review
Maverick Touch is a story about a vacation that Nadia and her sister Annabella decided to take in Houston. Nadia is a reporter and wants to have a relaxing time but also do some work for an article she is writing. They are accompanied by Carlisle Ali, whom Nadia has known for about a year. He introduces Nadia and Annabella to a friend of his Carter and they all proceed to start the vacation with dining and sightseeing. Of course there is bound to be trouble for Nadia and it takes Carlisle and Carter both to protect the sisters from an evil lurking in Houston. There is a serial killer or killers on the loose and they do what they do best. See,  Carlisle and Carter are assassins but they only go after the people who happen to escape justice in a court of law. It is no secret to the sisters that this is what these men do, but it does not seem to bother either of them.
This story was good, the plot at times a bit unbelievable. I think that the author crammed a lot into the 176 pages. I think things happened too quick and had the book been longer it may make the story line a bit more believable I did enjoy the book, however I think it may have been a bit more credible to me had I read the first book, Maverick Touch: The Cat. This is a story that has suspense, romance and a bit of humor and is a very quick read. If you have read other works by this author, I am sure you will enjoy this series.
I received a copy of the book for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

Emme joins Kit Doonan's rag-tag band of idealists, desperados and misfits bound for Virginia. But such a voyage will be far from easy and Emme finds her attraction to the mysterious Doonan inconvenient to say the least.

As for Kit, the handsome mariner has spent years imprisoned by the Spanish, and living as an outlaw with a band of escaped slaves; he has his own inner demons to confront, and his own dark secrets to keep...

About the Author

I've had a love of history and adventure ever since an encounter in infancy with a suit of armour at Tamworth Castle. Training as an artist, followed by a career as a city Jenny (Portrait 2)solicitor, did little to help displace my early dream of becoming a knight. A fascination with the Age of Discovery led to travels in South and Central America, and much of the inspiration for my debut came from retracing the footsteps of Francis Drake in Panama. The sequel centres on the first Elizabethan 'lost colony' of early Virginia. I am currently working on an epic adventure during the threat of invasion by the Spanish Armada.

My work has appeared in short story collections and anthologies and I've written for non-fiction publications including the Historical Novels Review. I am active in many organisations, having run the 'Get Writing' conferences for several years, and undertaken the co-ordination of the Historical Novel Society’s London Conference 2012. I am a member of that organisation as well as the Historical Writers' Association, the Romantic Nevelists' Association and the Society of Authors. I'll be co-ordinating the RNA's annual conference in 2014.

I have four children and now live on a farm in Dorset with my long suffering husband and an ever increasing assortment of animals.

I love travelling, art, reading and scrambling up hills and mountains (though I'm not so keen on coming down!).
