A Matter of Grave Concern by Brenda Novak Spotlight!

BLURB:

When Maximillian Wilder joins the notorious body snatchers known as the London Supply Company, the last thing on his mind is love. He’s worried about Madeline, his vanished half sister, who was last seen in the company of Jack Hurtsill, the gang’s conscienceless leader. Raiding graveyards, stealing corpses, and selling them to medical colleges as dissection material is dirty work, but he has to gain Jack’s trust. He’s determined to find out what happened to Madeline—and to bring Jack to justice if she was murdered for the coin her body could bring.

Beautiful, spirited Abigail Hale, daughter of the surgeon at Aldersgate School of Medicine, detests the challenging, hard-bargaining Max. But she must procure the necessary specimens if she is to save the college and her father’s career. She believes she is going to be successful—until Jack double-crosses her. Then she’s swept into a plot of danger and intrigue, one where Max must intervene and protect her, no matter the risk to his plan . . . or his heart.

 Excerpt:

“Make that fifteen.” A deep voice interrupted, and for the first time, Abigail looked directly at the man standing to the side and slightly behind Big Jack. His clothes bore as much dirt and his face as much beard growth as the rest of the group, but he was different. Not only was he significantly taller, he carried himself with a certain…authority.

How had she not noticed him before?

She’d been doing her best to block him and the others from her consciousness, she reminded herself.

Her gaze locked with an intense pair of sea-green eyes. “Why, that’s highway robbery! My father has never paid a resurrectionist more than nine guineas, six shillings. I’ve got it all in a book, right here.” She tapped the top of the desk to convince him.

When he smiled, his teeth looked clean and mostly straight, another detail that set him apart from his companions. “Evidently, you’re not a pupil of economics, or not a very good one, Miss Hale. Short supply, high demand, prices go up. Sometimes significantly. Fifteen guineas. No less.”

Those short, clipped sentences bore no Cockney accent and revealed a definite culture to his voice, causing Abigail to wonder if she had been dealing with the wrong man all along. She couldn’t imagine this stranger taking orders from anyone, much less the likes of Jack Hurtsill.

“Blimey, Max,” one of the other men muttered.

Drawing herself up to her fullest height, which was at least ten inches shy of this Max’s six feet something, Abigail clung tenaciously to her composure. “At this point, I would rather you take your ‘large’ and go.” Surely, there had to be other resurrection men she could contact; she hadn’t gone through all the names she heard muttered about the halls of the college and St. Bart’s Hospital next door. “I have seen naught but the head, and that small sample revealed a nasty wound.”

“There’s not a mark on the rest of him,” Max responded coolly. “We offered to show you, but you refused.”

Abigail had no intention of letting this body-snatcher tempt her into dumping the body out onto the rug as she had almost let them do before. “Mr. Hurtsill—I mean, Big Jack, here, was about to say ten guineas. I will go that high.”

“I’m afraid it’s not high enough,” Max countered.

“You’re a fast study, mate.” Jack slapped him on the back but didn’t interfere. Instead, he turned a challenging smile on Abigail and waited for her response.

“Then go,” she said, shooing them away. “Take Mr. Whoever He Is and leave. I will not let you rob me. Not if I can help it.”

“And what if you can’t?” Insolence lit the eyes of the man identified as Max. “Perhaps we should wait here for your father. No doubt he will have better sense of what a corpse is worth at the present time, although I doubt he would want us loitering about the place. What’s it been…eighteen months or so since those two surgeons were prosecuted for receiving and dissecting stolen bodies? With a possible knighthood on the horizon, and such a close tie to Sir Astley Cooper—the sergeant surgeon of the late king himself, no less—it would be quite unfortunate if your father were to be found dealing with the likes of us, wouldn’t you say?”

Abigail’s jaw dropped at the not-so-subtle threat. Perhaps she had underestimated these sack ’em up men. This man, anyway. “If what you have brought is worth so much Mr.…Max, is it?”

He gave her a mocking bow and added his last name, as if to prove he feared nothing from her. “Wilder. Maximillian Wilder at your service, Miss.”

Another Kind of Tree by Nicole Skuba Spotlight!

Another Kind of Free: Suicide Prevention in the Wake of Robin Williams’ Death

Summary

In mid-September 2001, recent college graduate and writer, Nicole Skuba, found herself strapped to a hospital bed after a deliberate overdose of Prozac. The previous five years of therapy and antidepressants did nothing to ease the bipolar disorder, clinical depression, or other diagnoses du jour.

Another Kind of Free: Suicide Prevention in the Wake of Robin Williams’ Death is part suicide prevention self-help guide, part darkly humorous memoir. After Nicole’s release in five days from the mental ward, she was determined to come up with her own route to happiness.

This memoir shares the excessive drinking, casual sex, manic joy, counseling, yoga, and goal-setting that ultimately led to healing and the beginning of a life worth living. It also illustrates the power that mindfulness-based stress reduction—even when done accidentally—can have in reducing depression and finding balance.

After thirteen years, Nicole is finally sharing her holistic methods of overcoming depression and addiction long-term with the hope of preventing at least one person from taking his or her life. This is especially important in the wake of Robin Williams’ death. The charismatic actor gave us laughter, inspiration, and the ability to embrace the absurd. With his suicide, he also left an unintended legacy: permission to end anguish with the same permanent decision he made.

Another Kind of Free: Suicide Prevention in the Wake of Robin Williams’ Death is a quick read aiming to reduce the stigma attached to mental illness and to provide an alternate, doable method of becoming “free” from mental illness. Sufferers and their family members will find Nicole’s memoir to be an entertaining chronicle of valuable, attainable information.

About the Author
Still amazed to be an adult, Nicole Skuba has managed to center her life around raising her two small sons and being true to her family (including husband and friends). She resides in Leesburg, Virginia where she co-owns a marketing agency. Happiest near the water, Nicole spends her free hours plotting her next escape, writing, and staring at the ceiling.

Under the pseudonym Nicole Pouchet, Nicole has written two romance novels, both part of her Elemental Myths paranormal romance series. Layla’s Gale, A Paranormal Romance won second prize in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest.

Excerpt

“How many pills did you swallow?”
The room fuzzed in and out, little black smudges blurring my vision. Smudges… schmudges… That officer’s name really was Officer Schmick. What a weird name. He had a bit of a limp, but he was nice as far as cops from my hometown went. His partner was a bit on edge though.
Put down the cat, ma’am, his partner had warned. I hadn’t realized a cat was viewed as a weapon to some people. Why had my mother called the cops anyway? That was a little extreme - and dangerous as well. Just outside the most dangerous quadrant of Washington, D.C., Prince Georges County cops were known for their excessive force. They were worse since the terrorist attacks a week ago. But, in truth, the cops had always been jumpy. Just a month or a year ago, they’d shot some confused guy who had barricaded himself in his own bedroom. He wasn’t hurting anyone, but his family was worried. So, the cops shot him. Kind of like shooting a cat to get him out of a tree.
Cats. Right. So, Officer Schmick’s partner had wanted me to put down the cat. I put Polka down before I got myself killed. My mother was talking. Really, she seemed unable to stop talking and talking and talking. Could she drive me? Should she call my therapist? Did they need the empty pill bottle? Then they put me in the front seat of the police car beside Officer Schmick and I ended up here.
“How many pills did you swallow?”
Here. The hospital room spun again. They didn’t have to handcuff me. Officer Schmick had said suicide is against the law.
“Do they ever prosecute people who commit suicide?” I asked the lady in scrubs leaning over me. My words sounded slurred to me. No matter. I got the joke, so I laughed.
“You drank a lot of wine, didn’t you? How many pills did you swallow?” The lady in scrubs smiled. She was pretty. She reminded me of a friend from college, and not just because she was a pretty, young, Indian doctor who laughed with me… Well, maybe that was exactly why. I watched the lady in scrubs put little sticky white discs on my chest and upper arms. Her skin was the same milk-chocolate color as mine. But, I liked her long hair more. Why did I cut off my hair again?
People always screw with their hair when they need a life change. It’s as if coloring or getting rid of inches of your hair will somehow fix the facts that your career is over, your kinda-boyfriend has moved halfway across the country to get away from you, you are forced to live at your mom’s yet again, your best friends are far away, you have no idea what to do with your life, and you have no health insurance to pay for your Prozac.
“So, Nicole, how many pills did you swallow?”
I stared at the overhead lights in the hospital room trying to remember. I’d had a session with my new therapist, Octavia, just a few hours ago. Getting help was one of the conditions of living with my mother, as casual to her as do the dishes would be to other parents. Since moving back into her apartment, my mother had driven me twenty minutes each way for weekly visits with Octavia. The fact that my mother didn’t trust me to come by myself was insulting; I never lied to her. Besides, where would I go instead? Happy hour was the only other activity one could do in a 100 minute time slot at five o’clock on Monday afternoons and, I wasn’t so far gone that I’d skip therapy to booze it up. My mother’s childish treatment was a big reason for me to get out of her apartment as soon as possible.
I knew I needed some help with my plummeting emotions. Normal people didn’t have time limits on how long they would suffer through misery before offing themselves. I wanted to be one of thos sunflower-gazing, happy people that didn’t need to drink to feel good. Octavia was a nice enough therapist, no condescending tones or judgmental looks over the rim of her glasses. The problem was that being suicidal took away the convention of doctor-patient confidentiality. I was a danger to myself, so my therapist could tell my mother anything she deemed pertinent to keeping me alive. It was hard to share my secret idea of moving to South Korea or my sex stories with a snitch.
As usual, this afternoon, I had confided only the information that I’d already shared with my mother. As I blabbered about my boyfriend, Malik, dumping me for the final time, Octavia tried to steer the discussion to my feelings surrounding terrorism. She wanted to know how I was adjusting.
It had been six days since the September 11th terrorist attacks and the country’s stress levels were only rising. The news was always showing the alert level as “orange” or “red” or “paisley.” Like most people, I didn’t know what the hell was going on. Instead of color blocks in the corner of the television screens, they should have posted clear signs reading “Get Your Shit and Go!” or “Pack Up but Sit Tight!” or “Good As It’s Gonna Get.” We’d all understand things a bit better.

Do I Bother You at Night? by Troy Aaron Ratliff Book Blast with Giveaway!

DoIbotheryoubanner

Do I Bother You at Night_EbookDo I Bother You At Night is Celebrating It's One Year Anniversary On October 4th! To thank all his loyal readers Troy is giving away a Caseable Kindle Folio from his new online store Tribal Style Design to one reader during the blast!

Book Blurb: They say nothing ever happens in Kansas. Sylvester Petersen used to think so too. That is, until a mysterious new neighbor moves in next door, seemingly out of nowhere. His handful of friends – people who tried to help him cope with the sudden death of his wife – think that it might be an opportunity for him to get reacquainted with the world outside his farmhouse and to build a new relationship with his neighbor. But that idea is soon snuffed out as strange events begin to happen around him. None of them wrong. Just strange: driving in the middle of the night, the sulfur-like odor coming off of him, the fact he doesn’t talk to anyone in the area. And what about that dog? Sylvester chooses the logical explanation and ignores the peculiar behavior. But when other oddities start to happen – the kind that affects Sylvester directly – he begins to worry. His reasoning dwindles and his growing fear points to his neighbor. Where is that stray dog going? After enough time, Sylvester starts to see and hear what the people of the area have been muttering about: Unexplainable blue light, corn crops moving on their own…the slaughtered cattle entirely too close to home. And that stray dog that keeps getting fatter and fatter… At the peak of summer, and with the walls closing in, Sylvester experiences something that will take him to the brink and haunt you forever. Bathed in loss, terror and human spirit, Do I Bother You at Night? will be a story you won’t forget and one that will give you a few restless evenings of your own. Love thy neighbor. "Do I Bother You At Night? by Troy Aaron Ratliff not only can be put on a list of one of my favorite frightening stories, it climbs near the peak of the mountain. Things happen in this story that made even a reader as jaded and hard to impress as me jump in my seat." - Alex Kimmell, author of The Key To Everything "As we know from his short fiction, Troy Aaron Ratliff revels - to our colorful benefit - in turning the ordinary on its head, often in terrifyingly plausible ways. In this, his first novel, he stretches into the realm of the supernatural, but of course, it continues to feel just as plausible because of the vivid characters at the heart of the story. Do I Bother You at Night? will stay with you for many nights." Mike Robinson, Author of The Prince of Earth and The Green-Eyed Monster

The Mindful Son by James Hickman Spotlight

"A motivational autobiography about overcoming schizophrenia"

This story provides an insider’s account of the world of mental health from the perspective of the patient, the healthcare provider, and the family member of someone with mental illness. It demonstrates beyond question that recovery is attainable and that the most daunting obstacles can be overcome through determination and the right mindset. The wisdom I acquired through years of trial and error is now at the disposal of anyone who reads these words. Anyone who seeks understanding of what having a mental illness is will discover that in these pages. They prove beyond doubt that recovery from serious mental illness is obtainable, and provide concrete information on how this recovery can be sustained. Those who read this book will know that great obstacles are surmountable with determination and the application of certain principles. This is the story of the ultimate triumph of a family devastated by mental illness over the course of thirty-seven years. Many dark days are recounted in this voyage, until we finally reach the light together.

“Jim's story of courage, perseverance and determination is an inspiration. His is a story, not of dealing with his personal struggles with mental illness but rather a story of success, hope and recovery. I recommend it to anyone whose life has been touched by adversity.”
Mike Autrey, Director
Alabama Office of Consumer Relations

“Hickman looks at the world of mental health through a prism of unique experience.”

You by Caroline Kepnes Debut Novel!

Today is a big day.  Caroline Kepnes’s debut novel YOU was finally “born into this world” at midnight-ish in bookstores across America.

Today I get to hold YOU.  Feel YOU.  I need YOU.
I’m obsessed with YOU.
YOU: The debut novel by Caroline Kepnes, a novel so dark and twisted, you can’t look away.  And worst of all: you don’t want to.  It’s available today, and I dare you to not be fascinated by it, not to talk about it, not to be consumed by it.  This is the type of novel that comes around once in a decade, the one that’s being compared to Gone Girl by PopSugar and Harper’s Bazaar and likened to “Lolita, if [Stephen] King wrote it”.  The kind of book that keeps people up until 2 AM reading it and ’til dawn thinking about it.  A plot so fascinatingly twisted that the book “isn’t even out yet, but it has already been compared to Bret Easton Ellis’ magnum opus ‘American Psycho'” (Salon).
Read this excerpt, I dare YOU:
