About the Book
Mathilde Miller wanted to be a good daughter and marry the son of a long-time family friend, Joshua Bowman. But she didn’t want to be the wife of a Pennsylvania farmer. She loved her life, cooking on the Virginia frontier at her family’s ordinary. The minute blacksmith Will McGlashen walks into her kitchen, her restlessness focused on him. Fresh from Scotland, with a voice “like a song” and thick coppery hair, her heart belonged to him. Was it possible for the daughter of a Pennsylvania German to marry a hired man from Scotland? What did she really know about Will McGlashen and his secret past?

Will McGlashen needed to keep his own counsel. A man with a past full of violence and loss in Scotland, he was grateful for this chance to rebuild his life as a blacksmith in Virginia. He’d have to ignore the undeniable pull he felt toward his boss’s eldest daughter. When Joshua Bowman showed up and claimed her, instead of providing resolution for will, it burns like the fire he wields in his blacksmith shop. As events unfold, Will wonders if the signs she’s sending him are all in his head and prays that he has the strength not to find out.

The story is set in the Virginia frontier in 1765, a time when Native Americans still lurked in the hills, bandits and robbers were handed swift justice, and enterprising men and their families attempted to live in and tame the wild western edge of the new colonies. An ordinary offering good food, a bed, and company for travelers along the way was a much welcomed respite. Mathilde and Will's story is woven into the history, adventure, and danger of the time period.

Excerpt
“The prosperity and happiness of a family depend greatly on the order and regularity established in it.” Mary Randolph, The Virginia Housewife
Mathilde could not believe what she was hearing. She dropped the pewter plates into the basin, landing with a metallic thud, as she felt her temper flaring and fought to stop herself from not flinging a plate across the room at her father.
Joshua was coming here—at her father’s request. Joshua Bowman, the son of her father’s best friend in Pennsylvania, would be here this week. She knew that her father wanted them to marry. She wanted no part of it.
“Father,” she said, turning to face him, so glad that the dining room was empty except for their family, as innkeepers they rarely dined alone as a family. She concentrated on keeping her voice even and steady. “I am not interested in marrying Joshua, nor am I interested in moving from this valley. This is my home.”
“Damn you, girl! How can you be so ungrateful? ” Her father, John, said, raising his voice and pounding his fist. “What am I to do with you, then? You need to be married. It’s the natural order of things. There are no decent young men around in this place. It’s time you courted.”
Mathilde felt her face flush. Her tongue felt thick in her mouth and her throat was clutching. “Father, I want to stay here and help with the ordinary. I love to cook and care for you and the children. I don’t want to be a farmer’s wife. I don’t want to move to Pennsylvania.”
“Tillie, your father and I—“ Her mother began, while rubbing her hand over her rounded, pregnant belly.
“Confound it woman,” John said to his wife. Her eyes lowered, but her hand touched his hand gently. He glanced at his wife’s hand. Then softening, he turned his head to Mathilde. “I am not going to force you to marry him. But you must allow him to court you. Give the man a fair chance. He can give you a good life in Pennsylvania. He is to come into a great deal of land. Land, Tillie. He can provide for you.”
Oh how maddening it was to not be heard. She did not want to be a farmer’s wife—no matter how large the farm. She loved cooking at Miller’s Ordinary, loved meeting all the travelers and hearing their stories of far away places. How dreadful to be stuck on a farm in the middle of nowhere, with hardly any contact with others. Couldn’t her father see that?
She looked at her sisters’ faces—all three of them sitting there with their eyes on her and remembered her mother’s chiding her for some previous minor indiscretion. “The girls watch you to see how to behave. You must take care.” Mathilde forced a smile on her face, even though she felt no comfort from her father’s words. Even though he said he would not force her to marry, that is exactly what he was doing. Mathilde’s smile belied her red face, which was a continual burden because she was so fair.
Heidi’s pleading eyes, Emma’s eyebrows lifted just so. Rosa looking so smug. Why did her 17-year-old sister anger her so much? She loved her, of course. They were sisters. Rosa, so much like her mother’s side of the family, was the opposite of Mathilde, both physically and personality-wise. Rosa of the calm, dark eyes, the steady personality, the undeniable beauty and charm—always saying the right things to the right people at the right time. By the time she was 16, she had three proposals of marriage. None of whom their father approved of—and to Rosa, of course, his approval was most important. He always shook his head and said, “Pretty flowers often get picked too early.” Her beauty and goodness, right now, however, acted like a pebble in Mathilde’s boot— a constant irritant.

Thrillers of the Times Books To Read and Ponder

"In uncertain times, the power of fiction can help us see the truth clearer than listening to the daily news. I wanted to introduce you to three authors whose recent thrillers offer a chilling dystopian view of what is, what may soon be, and how we can take action to protect what we believe is right."

I am showcasing three novels that make us think about what our future may hold.
"In The Cause, Vincent extrapolates our current social and political milieu into a smart, muscular thriller set in the not-too-distant future, with prose that cracks like lightning and reads just as fast." —Robert Barclay, author of Melal

The year is 2022. America is on the verge of economic and social collapse. The government has made liberty its enemy. African American hacker Isse Corvus enters a black-ops training camp. He discovers the leaders are revolutionaries seeking to return the U.S. back to its Constitutional roots. He learns that if he doesn’t join The Cause and help them hack the NSA’s servers, it could mean his life.

A novel of juxtaposition, The Cause also tells the tale of NSA Director General Titus Montgomery. The President has told him that rule of law must be maintained at all costs. But something is wrong with the heartbeat of America. What will he do when Martial law meets revolution?

Behind the Book

George Orwell wrote about the fully evolved totalitarian state in 1984. My intention was to write something futuristic and dystopian that was pre-Orwellian where the shape of a totalitarian state was still forming (only a few years into the future). I wanted the story to have topical elements to it, intriguing characters, and finally to show both sides of the story through a shattered mirror. Many of the technologies and NSA codenames used throughout the novel are in existence today. Simple Google searches on terms used will uncover a plethora of information. In this way, I wanted to place the reader on the fringe of our world today by taking a step farther into the future to ask the question, “How far away are we?” Other influences behind The Cause were Diary of a Bad Year by J.M. Coetzee, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, and James Bamford’s The Shadow Factory.

About the Author
Roderick Vincent is the author of the upcoming Minutemen series about a dystopian America. The first novel, titled The Cause, will be out in 2014.

A good part of his childhood and young-adult years were spent living on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands.

The first short story he wrote in March of 2000 titled The Tarlang (named after the Army carrier that used to bring the Marshallese people into work every morning) was later transformed into General Patton's Promise which was published in Straylight in 2009.

In 1988, he participated in a classical guitar masterclass with Christopher Parkening while majoring in music at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Throughout the 90's, he played electric guitar and sang in various rock bands. One such band was The Infinite Monkeys based out of Portland, Oregon

His previous short stories have been published in Straylight (University of Wisconsin, Parkside), and Offshoots (a Geneva publication).

Beyond his fiction writing, he blogs about the future, and the changing times of the world we live in.

When Shan Tao Yun and his old friend Lokesh are abruptly dragged away by Public Security, he is convinced that their secret, often illegal, support of struggling Tibetans has brought their final ruin. But his fear turns to confusion as he discovers he has been chosen to fill a vacancy on a special international commission investigating Tibetan suicides. Soon he finds that his predecessor was murdered, and when a monk sets himself on fire in front of the commissioners he realizes that the Commission is being used as a tool to whitewash Tibet’s self-immolation protests as acts of crime and terrorism. Shan faces an impossible dilemma when the Public Security officer who runs the Commission, Major Ren, orders the imprisoned Lokesh beaten to coerce Shan into following Beijing’s script for the Commission. He has no choice but to become part of the hated machine that is devouring Tibet, but when he discovers that the most recent immolation was actually another murder, he realizes the Commission itself is riddled with crime and intrigue.

Everywhere he turns, Shan finds new secrets that seem to lead to the last agonizing chapter of his life. Shan must make a final desperate effort to uncover the Commission's terrible secrets whose painful truth could change Shan’s life - and possibly that of many Tibetans - forever.

About the Author

Eliot Pattison has been described as a "writer of faraway mysteries," a label which is particularly apt for someone whose travel and interests span such a broad spectrum. After reaching a million miles of global trekking, visiting every continent but Antarctica, Pattison stopped logging his miles and set his compass for the unknown. Today he avoids well-trodden paths whenever possible, in favor of wilderness, lesser known historical venues, and encounters with indigenous peoples. An international lawyer by training, early in his career Pattison began writing on legal and business topics, producing several books and dozens of articles published on three continents. In the late 1990's he decided to combine his deep concerns for the people of Tibet with his interest in venturing into fiction by writing The Skull Mantra. Winning the Edgar Award for Best First Mystery--and listed as a finalist for best novel for the year in Dublin's prestigious IMPAC awards--The Skull Mantra launched the Inspector Shan series, which now includes Water Touching StoneBone MountainBeautiful Ghosts, and The Prayer of the Dragon. Both The Skull Mantra and Water Touching Stone were selected by Amazon.com for its annual list of ten best new mysteries. Water Touching Stone was selected by Booksense as the number one mystery of all time for readers' groups. The Inspector Shan series has been translated into over twenty languages around the world.
Pattison entered China for the first time within weeks of normalization of relations with the United States in 1980 and during his many return visits to China and neighboring countries developed the intense interest in the rich history and culture of the region that is reflected in these books. They have been characterized as creating a new "campaign thriller" genre for the way they weave significant social and political themes into their plots. Indeed, as soon as the novels were released they became popular black market items in China for the way they highlight issues long hidden by Beijing.
Pattison's longtime interest in another "faraway" place –the 18th century American wilderness and its woodland Indians-- led to the launch of his Bone Rattler series, which quickly won critical acclaim for its poignant presentation of Scottish outcasts and Indians during the upheaval of the French and Indian War. In Pattison's words, "this was an extraordinary time that bred the extraordinary people who gave birth to America," and the lessons offered by the human drama in that long-ago wilderness remain fresh and compelling today.
A former resident of Boston and Washington, Pattison resides on an 18th century farm in Pennsylvania with his wife, three children, and an ever-expanding menagerie of animals.

Major Penelope Baldwin, accomplished pilot and tactician, could have expected a bright future and stable military career until a dubious flight mission over Al A’Zamiyah, Iraq results in the loss of her left leg, and any opportunity for motherhood.

As Penelope struggles in recovery, her mother Evelyn struggles to secure their financial future and cover mounting medical bills. Buying the lies of disingenuous bankers and marketing shills, Evelyn places her savings within the derivatives market, a bubble that (unbeknownst to her) is on the verge of bursting. The collapse will destroy what’s left of her finances, along with the investments and pensions of countless citizens.

Within months, on a wintry night in Georgia, a coked-up stock trader miscalculates a power turn in a Porsche coupe, sending its right front wheel over the curb and crashing into that which Penelope holds most dear.

The stage is set for a dedicated warrior, an American heroine, to turn her sights on those greedy, callous men responsible for ripping away her future.

Baldwin, along with Tessa Montgomery (Senior Chief USMC), Cynthia Washington (RN MSW), and six other highly competent women, all similarly devastated by the avarice, arrogance, and indifference of America’s ruling elite, channel their grief and rage, and their search for justice, to become a finely orchestrated and well-financed band of predators.

Several months later, several of the most powerful of America’s financial and political elite are slaughtered in forty-storied monuments to their egos. Then a terror―a terror so primal that it rends the very fabric of everyday life―is released into the homes, limos, and private jets of America’s quasi-monarchical class.
An invisible society of professional predators is leading a lethal attack on the long sacred relationship between money and politics.

Two critical questions are explicitly raised by the attackers: When the voice of the few, the wealthy, the privileged is the sound of the money essential for election, can the voice of the common citizen be heard at all? Can an ethical government exist when the special interests it’s charged with policing have captured the political system and the means of election through their vast wealth?

    About Joe Lane

Joe Lane was born in Tampa, Florida. In the late 1960s, he attended but did not graduate from Florida State University, where he says he closely resembled John Belushi’s sidekick D-Day in the movie Animal House. In the 1980s, he attended Yale University and Middlebury College summer language school, where he was a self-professed “study animal” and claimed to love every minute of it.
Joe is a true renaissance man. As consultant to businesses, he often spoke at regional and national conventions. He took up the business of golf, which led to him running the exclusive Golden Wings Golf Training School for ten years. As CNBC noted in a piece it did on him and the school, many of his students were WallStreeters.
As a result of his golf successes in the USJoe was able to collaborate with Shanghai Buick-GM to produce one of the most successful golf TV series ever in China, Shooting 78 (Qi Shi Ba Gan – 七十八杆 in Chinese). Joe has lived all across the globe, from Tampa, Florida, to Columbia, MD, to the Washington, D.C. metro area, to Connecticut, and most recently in China. In the early 1990s, Joe stayed in the Beijing area off and on for 2 years. He and his wife and partner of 17 years, Barbara, lived in Zhaoqing City in the Guangdong Province of China from 2006-2013. They launched the only wood fired, brick oven pizza restaurant in Guangdong Province in 2009. It has been so successful they are now looking for additional locations even though they have returned to their home in CT.
Joe has been flying planes since 1968 and is an instrument-rated private pilot. Joe is currently working on his commercial pilot certificate. Joe is also a sailor. A sailboat captain in the 1970s, he ran charters in the Chesapeake Bay for five years. He describes himself as “a decent skier, but a great fly fisherman.”
He is also an insatiable reader, reading as many as 40 novels and a plethora of research tomes every year.
His first marriage produced three children, Kathryn, Alex, and John, whom he raised on his own for almost 10 years (he claims it was more like 10 centuries). None of Joe’s children has provided him with granddaughters yet, which he hates, but he has seven grandsons whom he loves dearly.

Adelaide Mannheim and her slave Rachel share a shameful secret. Adelaide’s father, a Jewish planter in Cass County, Georgia, is Rachel’s father, too. Adelaide marries neighboring planter Henry Kaltenbach, a Jew deeply troubled by slavery, and watches with a wary eye as her husband treats all of his slaves—including Rachel—with kindness. As the country’s conflict over slavery looms ever larger, Henry and Rachel fall in love, and as the United States is rent by the Civil War, the lives of mistress and slave are torn apart.

When the war brings destruction and Emancipation, can these two women, made kin by slavery, free themselves of the past to truly become sisters?

    Praise for Slave and Sister

"Two faces seen in a mirror: a black slave and her white mistress. Their eyes, their cheekbones, reflect a disturbingly similar cast. Disturbing for the times, antebellum Georgia, and for the reason: Adelaide Mannheim and her slave Rachel share the same father. Later, as war clouds gather, Adelaide, newly married, finds her husband and Rachel have fallen in love. What could have been a tawdry tale of forbidden romance becomes, in the hands of author Sabra Waldfogel, a complex story of survival and the emergence of true love and heroism. Waldfogel has an eye for character and the historical training to ground her story in the milieu of the 1850s and '60s. A veritable page-turner that will capture the reader from start to finish." - Lavender Magazine

"A carefully crafted cavern through time... Waldfogel's wizardry with words makes it impossible not to be devastatingly impacted by her work... A literary tapestry of shame and honor, of glory and defeat, and of coming to terms with the most important issues in life." - The Northern Star

Natchez Burning by Greg Isles Review!

I have to be in the right mood to read a book that’s 800 pages long because it means the storyline is extremely complex and intricate and there is a lot of character growth and development. The book Natchez Burning by Greg Iles definitely fits this description.

A description of the book from Amazon is as follows:

Growing up in the rural Southern hamlet of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned everything he knows about honor and duty from his father, Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor and pillar of the community is accused of murdering Violet Turner, the beautiful nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the early 1960s. A fighter who has always stood for justice, Penn is determined to save his father, even though Tom, stubbornly evoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to speak up in his own defense.
The quest for answers sends Penn deep into the past—into the heart of a conspiracy of greed and murder involving the Double Eagles, a vicious KKK crew headed by one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the state. With the aid of a local friend and reporter privy to some of Natchez's oldest and deadliest secrets, Penn follows a bloody trail that stretches back forty years, to one undeniable fact: no one—black or white, young or old, brave or not—is ever truly safe.
With everything on the line, including his own life, Penn must decide how far he will go to protect those he loves . . . and see justice done, once and for all.
I will admit I was extremely intimidated to start reading this book, based on two things: it was the first installment in a trilogy AND it is 800 pages long. Plus it’s from an author I had never heard of. Sure, reading Harry Potter at 800 pages isn’t intimidating because I’m familiar with JK Rowling and the books (and movies).
Even though I had never heard of Greg Iles before, I have to admit that he is a great writer who keeps the reader engaged in his novel, despite it being “epic novel length”. The chapters were just short enough were I never felt bogged down or bored. There are sometimes excessive descriptions of everything, which I feel if Iles had edited just a bit, his book could have been cut down to 550-600 pages and still would not have lost any depth; however, these excessive descriptions don’t hurt the book or even necessarily bore the reader; they only add to it, which is a tricky thing as a writer to accomplish.
The story and characters themselves reminded me a lot of characters you would find in John Grisham novels, with inspiration from books such as The HelpThe Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings, from a Southern tradition standpoint.  I gave the book 4 stars because it was an extremely well written novel with a lot of different characteristics such as suspense, murder, betrayal, legal issues, etc. Very intricate and interesting novel that I would recommend to anyone brave enough to tackle a book of this length.

Your Perfect Life by Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke Review!

Who isn’t a fan of the book or movie Freaky Friday?  I know I am. It is a very clever and funny story about a mom and daughter who switch lives and learn important lessons about each other. The book Your Perfect Life by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke draws inspiration from that story and they make it unique, even though the storyline has been somewhat overdone.

Goodreads provides this description of the book:

Best friends since childhood, Casey and Rachel couldn’t lead more different lives. While workaholic Casey rubs elbows with celebrities daily as the host of Gossip TV and comes home nightly to an empty apartment, stay-at-home mom Rachel juggles an “oops” baby, two fiery teenagers, and a husband who barely seems the man she fell in love with two decades before. After an argument at their twentieth high school reunion, Casey and Rachel throw back shots to get the night back on track. Instead, they get a life-changing hangover.

Waking up in each other’s bodies the next morning, they must figure out how to navigate their altered realities. Rachel is forced to confront the reason she gave up her broadcasting dreams when she got pregnant in college, and Casey finally steps out of the spotlight to face the truth about why she’s alone. And they soon discover that they don’t know themselves—or their best friend—nearly as well as they thought they did.
When I read the description of the book, my first thought was honestly “great, Freaky Friday Part 2, cue the cheese”. Although it resembles that story, Your Perfect Life has believable storylines and characters with depth (not implyingFreaky Friday doesn’t, but because the stories are so similar, I was surprised at the depth of the story and character development). Once Casey and Rachel trade lives, they really have the chance to see what the other person goes through on a daily basis and they learn the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, which is a hard lesson for most of us to learn without trading bodies with people.

I gave this book 3 stars because although it was a well written book, the storyline wasn’t as original as other books in the same genre.

The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain Review!

I am a huge fan of Diane Chamberlain so every time she writes a new book, I raise the bar just a bit. The same as I do for Kristin Hannah and Jodi Picoult, two other favorite authors of mine. They are all excellent writers and I expect each book they write to be just a bit better than the previous. With The Silent Sister, Diane Chamberlain did not disappoint.

    Per Goodreads:

Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager.  Now, over twenty years later, her father has passed away and she's in New Bern, North Carolina cleaning out his house when she finds evidence to the contrary.  Lisa is alive.  Alive and living under a new identity.  But why exactly was she on the run all those years ago, and what secrets are being kept now?  As Riley works to uncover the truth, her discoveries will put into question everything she thought she knew about her family.  Riley must decide what the past means for her present, and what she will do with her newfound reality, in this engrossing mystery from international bestselling author Diane Chamberlain.

This isn’t my favorite Diane Chamberlain book (because she has written so many amazing books); however, I really loved it. It is one of those books I didn’t put down and read within a couple hours and didn’t want the story to end. The storyline is interesting, somewhat suspenseful, and the characters are all unique and interesting.

The only criticism I have for this book is there are two characters (a husband and wife) in the book that prove to be somewhat threatening for the main character Riley, and I don’t feel that their issues were sorted out completely. Chamberlain somewhat wrapped up the issues, but she also indicated they could be troublesome for Riley. I wish Chamberlain would have “wrapped up” their storyline a little bit better because I felt like I was left hanging and expected them to cause her trouble throughout the book, but they didn’t.

But overall, this is truly a great read and it deserves all 5 stars I awarded it on Goodreads.

I'm the author of 23 novels published in more than twenty languages. I like to write complex stories about relationships between men and women, parents and children, brothers and sisters, and friends. Although the thematic focus of my books often revolves around family, love, compassion and forgiveness, my stories usually feature a combination of suspense, mystery and intrigue.

Based on the description from Goodreads and reviews I had read online, I had high expectations of the book The Good Girl by Mary Kubica. Goodreads provided this description of the book:

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, at first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

Colin's job was to abduct Mia as part of a wild extortion plot and deliver her to his employers. But the plan takes an unexpected turn when Colin suddenly decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota, evading the police and his deadly superiors. Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them, but no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.

An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a compulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems….

It is labeled as a mystery/suspense, which is appropriate based on the content but I felt a bit let down at the end. There was no point in time while reading that I was on the edge of my seat, like an excellent suspense story is supposed to make you feel. The story itself just seemed trite and the main character Mia annoyed me throughout, even if she was a “victim” of a kidnapping. The story also jumped between characters and before and after, and I felt like Kubica robbed herself of the suspense by letting the reader know right away that Mia survived the kidnapping. I felt more excited to be done with the book than I did to be reading it. I gave the book 2 stars on Goodreads.
