Winter, 1564. Beautiful young Princess Margot is summoned to the court of France, where nothing is what it seems and a wrong word can lead to ruin. Known across Europe as Madame la Serpente, Margot’s intimidating mother, Queen Catherine deMédicis, is a powerful force in a country devastated by religious war. Among the crafty nobility of the royal court, Margot learns the intriguing and unspoken rules she must live by to please her poisonous family.
Eager to be an obedient daughter, Margot accepts her role as a marriage pawn, even as she is charmed by the powerful, charismatic Duc de Guise. Though Margot’s heart belongs to Guise, her hand will be offered to Henri of Navarre, a Huguenot leader and a notorious heretic looking to seal a tenuous truce. But the promised peace is a mirage: her mother’s schemes are endless, and her brothers plot vengeance in the streets of Paris. When Margot’s wedding devolves into the bloodshed of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, she will be forced to choose between her family and her soul.
Médicis Daughter is historical fiction at its finest, weaving a unique coming-of-age story and a forbidden love with one of the most dramatic and violent events in French history.

Praise for Médicis Daughter: A Novel of Marguerite de Valois

“This is Renaissance France meets Game of Thrones: dark, sumptuous historical fiction that coils religious strife, court intrigue, passionate love, family hatred, and betrayed innocence like a nest of poisonous snakes. Beautiful Princess Margot acts as our guide to the heart of her violent family, as she blossoms from naive court pawn to woman of conscience and renown. A highly recommended coming-of-age tale where the princess learns to slay her own dragons!” –Kate Quinn, Bestselling author of LADY OF THE ETERNAL CITY
“The riveting story of a 16th century French princess caught in the throes of royal intrigue and religious war. From the arms of the charismatic Duke of Guise to the blood-soaked streets of Paris, Princess Marguerite runs a dangerous gauntlet, taking the reader with her. An absolutely gripping read!” –Michelle Moran, bestselling author of THE REBEL QUEEN
“Rising above the chorus of historical drama is Perinot’s epic tale of the fascinating, lascivious, ruthless House of Valois, as told through the eyes of the complicated and intelligent Princess Marguerite. Burdened by her unscrupulous family and desperate for meaningful relationships, Margot is forced to navigate her own path in sixteenth century France. Amid wars of nation and heart, Médicis Daughter brilliantly demonstrates how one unique woman beats staggering odds to find the strength and power that is her birthright.” –Erika Robuck, bestselling author of HEMINGWAY’S GIRL

The Untold by Courtney Collins Spotlight!

Today I am pleased to feature The Untold by Courtney Collins, now out in trade paperback, originally published in Australia as The Burial. Berkley Trade Paperback Reprint: June 2nd 2015

About the Book

A spirited and haunting debut novel born from Australia’s rugged landscape and savage past, introducing the estimable talents of Courtney Collins to American readers,  Inspired by the life of Jessie Hickman, a legendary woman outlaw, yet wholly the work of a dazzling imagination, this intensely atmospheric and compulsively readable tale is at once exhilarating and heartbreaking.  Published in Australia (and throughout Europe) asThe Burial, this stunning debut was nominated for the Australian Vogel Literary Award (shortlist), Scribe Fiction Literary Award (highly commended), Stella Prize (shortlist), Dobbie Award (shortlist), NSW Premier’s Literary Award (shortlist) and has been optioned for a feature film by Renegade Films/Pure Pictures with the support of Screen Australia.

It is 1921, and a woman has done an unspeakable thing... At age 26, Jessie has already lived life as a circus rider, horse and cattle rustler, and convict. Now, in a mountain-locked valley, amid squalls of driving rain, Jessie is on the run. Growing up in the Australian outback, Jessie developed a keen talent for handling and eventually stealing horses.  Captured and jailed, she finds her only hope of freedom in indentured servitude. But from the start she loathes Fitz, the horse-trading brute who “hires” her, demeans her, and forces her to marry him. Her only source of liberation comes through violent and horrific acts—the deaths of Fitz and their newborn child.  It is the voice of that baby, otherworldly and omniscient, that chronicles Jessie’s dark adventure.

Navigating treacherous terrain as she runs from the law, Jessie lives by her wits, accompanied only by her beloved horse, Houdini.   Two men seek her—one her lover, the other the lawboth uncertain if they should save her or themselves.  Jessie’s lover is Fitz’s hired hand, Jack Brown, an Aboriginal/Irish stockman who, despite serving as an Australian soldier in the First World War, has neither the rights of a citizen nor the respect of his white countrymen.  On the side of the law is Sergeant Andrew Barlow, all but banished to this remote outpost in order to battle a heroin addiction, who has his own motives for catching Jessie.

Encounters with an isolated old man and woman, and later with a band of lost-boy cattle rustlers, help Jessie survive, but also place her in danger of being caught.   As the rousing adventure unfolds, each character will seek a form of justice from an unjust world, and search for freedom from the imperfections that imprint their souls and bind them to their destinies.

In the tradition of such writers as Carson McCullers, Zora Neale Hurston, and Cormac McCarthy, Courtney Collins gives voice to unforgettable characters shaped as much by what they don’t have as by what they do—renegades who obey their own laws but never waver from their own version of righteousness.

Abby’s nights are stressed with her Enchanter life, her dreaded nightmares, and her enduring will to save her brother from his own inner darkness. But when Evan speaks to her for the first time in fourteen years, she finds his voice too painful to bear.
Countless times before them, the union between their opposing families has failed and caused unfathomable destruction. The love in their hearts strives to be together forever, but will their destinies break them apart?
Allie Burke’s second novel in The Enchanters Series breaks through the Paranormal Romance genre to not just entertain her readers but empower and inspire them to embrace the momentous question: What would you do when faced with an impossible love?
Amber Passion Book 3:
With a modern touch, Allie Burke’s third and final novel in the Enchanters series plays off the age old question: How far is too far to protect those you love? True love can be demonstrated in a multitude of actions or a multitude of sins. You choose.
Daniel is lost without his other half, his twin sister Abby, who is pregnant, depressed, and oh so far away, struggling with her own demons. Seeking a ray of sunlight in his dark world, Daniel visits Hazel Grove and for the second time experiences the sun shining in the middle of the night. But this is a sun with a different name. A sun with blonde hair and an orange aura and with a bright light that scares the darkness right out of him. The blackness that had been his heart for the duration of his life, is…fading. Can the enchanting Claire bring passion and comfort to a man who yearns for her without even realizing it?
As the next generation of Enchanters make their choices, the outcome will change the course of their people forever. Only time, and love, will tell if they made the right choice. With a culmination and a turn of events you never saw coming, Amber Passion answers the questions you wondered about and leaves the reader forever changed and daydreaming in every shade imaginable, starting with darkness, and ending, at the end of the tunnel, with light.

Excerpt
She knew nothing of the white van that pulled up behind her, until the two
men grabbed her and bundled her into the back of it. She’d been jogging
along the road, with her headphones on listening to Mumford and Sons.
At first she’d thought it was a prank being carried out by some of her
friends. But, as the van tore along the narrow road at top speed and
she found herself being tossed from side to side, she knew something
much more sinister was unfolding and started to scream. Suddenly
the van took a sharp left. She fell and smashed her face against the
side panelling. Then she could feel it being driven down a long pebbled
lane. She stared at her headphones, the music still blaring, lying on
the floor of the van. She cursed herself for not listening to her parents
who had begged her to bring her mobile phone.
The van jolted to a halt. She heard the men get out. She heard
their feet crunch on the pebble drive as they walked to the back of
the van and opened the doors. She cried with terror as the two middle
aged men dragged her out and carried her across the forecourt
towards a huge wooden door.
One of them rang the bell and seconds later she heard the door
creak as it inched open. A tall man of about sixty with a nose like
a beak moved to the side as the two men carried her in. As they
brought her along the dark hallway, she tried to struggle but to no
avail, they were too strong. She screamed and screamed but her
screams seemed to be swallowed up by the old house.
When they reached the back of the house, they made her stand up.
She begged them to let her go home. Tears ran down her face.
They ignored her pleas, opened another door and pushed her through.
She found herself in an old church. They prodded her up along
the aisle towards an altar. One of them went over to the wall and
pulled down a handle disguised as a candlestick. The altar started to
move slowly across, revealing a stairway into a dungeon. The two
men pushed her down the stairs into the dark hole below. The altar
started to move back across. She tried to climb up the stairs, but
they forced her back down. She screamed one last scream. Then the
darkness folded in around her, as the marble altar ground itself into
place, eventually drowning out her pleas.

The Outer Banks House by Diann Ducharme Spotlight!

As the wounds of the Civil War are just beginning to heal, one fateful summer would forever alter the course of a young girl’s life.

In 1868, on the barren shores of post-war Outer Banks North Carolina, the once wealthy Sinclair family moves for the summer to one of the first cottages on the ocean side of the resort village of Nags Head. Seventeen-year-old Abigail is beautiful, book-smart, but sheltered by her plantation life and hemmed-in by her emotionally distant family. To make good use of time, she is encouraged by her family to teach her father’s fishing guide, the good-natured but penniless Benjamin Whimble, how to read and write. And in a twist of fate unforeseen by anyone around them, there on the porch of the cottage, the two come to love each other deeply, and to understand each other in a way that no one else does.

But when, against everything he claims to represent, Ben becomes entangled in Abby's father's Ku Klux Klan work, the terrible tragedy and surprising revelations that one hot Outer Banks night brings forth threaten to tear them apart forever.

With vivid historical detail and stunning emotional resonance, Diann Ducharme recounts a dramatic story of love, loss, and coming of age at a singular and rapidly changing time in one of America’s most beautiful and storied communities.

Praise for The Outer Banks House

“...There's real darkness on the edge of this romance that hurls the lovers toward tragedy, as if the price to re-enter the innocence of Eden might afford Abby nothing but despair. This 2010 debut novel and portrayal of the historical Outer Banks offers a terrific option for beach reading; it's the sort of novel that can be charming without requiring an abundance of character complexity and depth. Abby's evolution ultimately parallels the positive aspects of how the South reconciled to change after the Civil War, a change that required a culture of ignorance to wash out to sea.” — Style Weekly Review

“It’s 1868, and the natives of North Carolina’s Outer Banks think the Sinclairs’ summer residence on the beach at Nags Head is right peculiar. Seventeen-year-old Abigail Sinclair is enlisted by her parents to teach Ben Whimble, her father’s fishing guide, to read. Abby is being courted by medical student Hector Newman and is appalled at the dirty and perpetually barefoot Ben. But Abby is also restless and slowly sees in Ben more than just a willing pupil. Ben might be getting sweet on his teacher as well, but her father has involved him in a matter that doesn’t sit right with the Banker, knowing that freedmen and runaway slaves have long lived contentedly out on Roanoke Island. It’s just three years since the end of the war, and for some, that isn’t long enough. VERDICT First novelist Ducharme has laced her novel with the sounds and the smells of the North Carolina shoreline. Racism and Southern tradition run along parallel paths in this affecting debut, where gentlemen can be less than honorable and enslavement doesn’t always involve chains. Highly recommended for fans of Southern fiction.” - Bette-Lee Fox — Library Journal, Starred Review

“A heart-felt and engrossing novel about the coming of age of two very different young people in the South just after the Civil War: a curious upper-class girl from an almost bankrupt plantation and a handsome young barefoot fisherman “made of sand and seawater” who comes to her to learn to read. What they learn from each other about tolerance and caring in those turbulent times will change their lives forever. A beautiful sense of this place by the sea, of a country in conflict, of death and redemption, and of new love.” - Stephanie Cowell, Author of CLAUDE & CAMILLE: A NOVEL OF CLAUDE MONET and MARRYING MOZART

“The Outer Banks House is a beautifully written and deeply moving story of a sheltered young woman's awakening to life, love and the injustice of discrimination against former slaves. In theme and impact, shades of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn; in the evocative setting and fresh voice, a unique novel all its own.” - Karen Harper — Author of THE QUEEN'S GOVERNESS

She was the spirited daughter of a North Carolina plantation owner, and he was a poor fisherman who she tutored on the porch of her family’s Nags Head cottage. When we last saw Abigail Sinclair and Ben Whimble at the close of The Outer Banks House, they’d overcome their differences in life stations and defied convention to begin their new life together.

But now it’s seven years later, and Return to the Outer Banks House finds the couple married and in hard times—riddled by poverty, miscarriages, and weakened family ties. The strong bonds that once held them together have eroded over time, and their marriage threatens to unravel, particularly when relationships from the past and ambitions for the future find their way into the mismatched couple’s present predicament.

Can their love survive? Or are the challenges they face insurmountable? Return to the Outer Banks House carries readers back to 1875 to answer these questions and explore the ebb and flow of a rocky marriage set against the enchanting North Carolina shoreline. Replete with history, intrigue, and plenty of maritime drama, it’s an evocative tale of struggle in the Reconstruction-era South.

Praise for Return to the Outer Banks House

“...Set between 1875 and ’76, Ducharme’s story—this being the sequel to The Outer Banks House (2010)—is about love and its many faces, from young and reckless to unrequited. Specifically, she explores the unlikely passion that forms between smart, affluent Abigail Sinclair and uneducated, penniless Benjamin Whimble. The people of this tightknit island community on the Outer Banks, off the coast of North Carolina, are connected by their collective poverty and abiding love for the sea. Outsiders are generally unwelcome...” - Kirkus Reviews

04_Diann Ducharme_AuthorAbout the Author

Diann was born in Indiana in 1971, but she spent the majority of her childhood in Newport News, Virginia. She majored in English literature at the University of Virginia, but she never wrote creatively until, after the birth of her second child in 2003, she sat down to write The Outer Banks House. She soon followed up with her second book, Chasing Eternity, and in 2015 the sequel to her first novel, Return to the Outer Banks House.

Diann has vacationed on the Outer Banks since the age of three. She even married her husband of 10 years, Sean Ducharme, in Duck, North Carolina, immediately after a stubborn Hurricane Bonnie churned through the Outer Banks. Conveniently, the family beach house in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina provided shelter while she conducted research for her historical fiction novels.

She has three beach-loving children and a border collie named Toby, who enjoys his sprints along the shore. The family lives in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, counting down the months until summer.

The Twinkies Cookbook 85th Anniversary Edition Review!

Description

ISBN: 9781607747710
Published: 15/08/2015
Imprint: Ten Speed Press
Extent: 124 pages

- See more at: http://www.randomhouse.com.au

A comeback cookbook for the perennially popular snack cake, with 50 unique sweet and savory recipes that highlight the whimsical nostalgia of America's favorite dessert.

For more than 80 years, Twinkies have captivated the cravings of Americans both young and old. The Twinkies Cookbook, Second Edition explores the snack cake's heritage in the United States while celebrating its popularity in recipes for snacks both sweet and savory. For the first edition, Hostess urged Twinkie-aficionados across the nation to submit their favorite dishes featuring the cream-filled sponge cake. This new edition compiles the best of these colorful concoctions with 25 new recipes and additional photography. From a Twinkie-filled take on chicken and waffles to Twinkie pumpkin pie, these surprising and innovative recipes are a small slice of Americana that will be a hit with Twinkies fans across the country.

My Thoughts

Twinkies, my absolute favorite cream filled treat, aside from Suzy Q's. I love them, I have been known to sit and eat a half of a box of these little treats. I am of an age that I remember when they were a lot cheaper and a lot bigger, Almost twice the size they are now and 10 cents a package. I was so disappointed when in 2012, 82 years after they were invented, the little golden delight was no longer going to be made. How awful, an end of an era if you will, at least for the Twinkie. There was even a petition asking President Obama to nationalize the Twinkie industry in the hopes to keep it open. The company was saved and as of July 15th 2013, they were back!!

Why are Twinkies special? They just are, simple as that. They are vintage, totally no good for you but ohhhh so good, I still love them even though I don't eat them much anymore. The Twinkie was invented by James A. Dewar, who drove a horse drawn pound cake wagon for Continental Baking Company outside of Chicago. The company was looking for a snack that was inexpensive that would appeal to people in the tight economy. So they used their shortcake pans and make the cakes originally with a banana cream center. because bananas were available all year round. At some point the filling changed to what they are filled with now.

On to the cookbook, well what can I say? In these 194 pages you will find an assortment of recipes. All the recipes use the Twinkies in some form. For the Twinkie Carrot Cake Cookies, the Twinkies are completely dismantled and redistributed using a food processor. You can make Pineapple Upside Down Cake Twinkies, Twinkie Cherry Pie, and you can even make a Chocolate Twinkie Pudding using a slow cooker, who knew? Twinkling Turkey, sure why not? Then there is Dave's Twinkie Burger...hmmm. Well maybe it is good.

As I was going through this unique cookbook, I was amazed at all the creativity, easy to follow recipes, but nothing in the way of Nutritional Information. Well I think with most of these recipes, I don't want to know. I thought that this cookbook is amazing. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to try one of the recipes! I recommend this book to the person like me who love vintage things, they book belongs on everyone's cookbook shelve right next to Betty Crocker!

I received a copy of this cookbook from Netgalley and was not monetarily compensated for my review.
