A true American classic if ever there was one; even the name had a catchy ring to it.

Camaro.

The Camaro was Chevrolet’s response to the most popular car of the era, the Ford Mustang. First generation Camaros (1967–69) offered plenty of performance, appearance, and comfort options. Produced in coupes and convertibles, they immediately became the must-have street machine among fast-car aficionados.

In order to own a 1968 Camaro SS with a 396 engine, some men would gladly sell their souls and come out feeling like they got the better end of the deal. Eternal damnation be damned, this rare breed of car embodied beauty as well as precision and plenty of rubber-burning power.

A big-block Super Sport 396 with 375 horsepower came stock with chrome hood inserts that imitated velocity stacks. The introduction of Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system, made it so that the side vent windows were eliminated from future production. The 1968 models sported a more pointed front grille, and the front running lights were changed from circular to oval.

It took corners like a shark cruising on asphalt.

It embodied outlaw sexy without even trying.

Arnold Rinaldi loved his ’68 Camaro SS with a 396 engine almost as much as he loved his lovely wife, Beatrice. Both had been constant fixtures in his life for as long as he could remember. While a war masquerading as a “military action” was all the rage in Southeast Asia, Arn purchased the car brand-new from a Chevy dealer in Pasadena for a little over three thousand dollars.

What little money he had left over went toward buying an engagement ring for Betty.

Both proved to be exceptional investments as he managed to hold on to the perfect gal and the perfect car for more than forty years. Not bad for a guy who couldn’t catch a Frisbee.

Almost six feet tall and well built, the blue-eyed California native was neither a troublemaker nor a pushover. He understood his civic duty when he registered for the draft, but luckily his number never came. While many of his high school friends were running through the jungle, he spent a good portion of his time driving back and forth from university and courting Betty.

With a speedometer topping out at 120 miles per hour, Arn’s muscle car packed plenty of muscle and could probably do about 130 under the right conditions. Despite what his gearhead pals said about sticks over manuals, Arn preferred the two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission to a four-speed manual shift. With all of the stop-and-go traffic that Southern California was famous for, an automatic offered a lot less work with the same result.

Baby blue, with pearl-white striping: If Arn’s Camaro was a woman, it would surely be a heartbreaker . . . but no matter how much he loved driving that badass machine, the glorious ride was not what he felt most proud of. That accomplishment came after he convinced Betty to take his name and become his lawfully wedded wife.

Except for tragic events such as the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the My Lai Massacre, 1968 proved to be a really good year.

Naturally flirty, Betty was one of those fair-skinned daughters who no one could ever accurately peg their ancestry. Green-eyed, with a slender nose and a curvy build, she might be of English descent with some German thrown in. Or maybe she was Irish with a touch of Dutch.

Arn had never seen a woman who could be so graceful without even trying, but her grace was not a result of years of charm school indoctrination; Betty just knew how to conduct herself. She spoke properly, but with wit and intelligence. Her leggy walk was captivating, and while many a man enjoyed the visual, only Arn got to enjoy the ride.

With one hand on the steering wheel, he always made sure to hold Betty’s hand with his right hand. Absolutely no one ever was allowed to ride shotgun when she was around. The queen seat was reserved for her and the entire universe understood this unwritten law. Hell, it even seemed like the car knew her place.

Whenever Arn drove somewhere without Betty, it felt like a part of the equation was missing. The engine didn’t purr as perfectly. The perfectly balanced chassis seemed to be slightly off. The radio played music, but rarely the songs he wanted to hear. These issues were never anything to wrench on, because they always seemed to work themselves out when Betty slipped into the passenger seat.

Or even better . . . into the backseat.

Book I: A Father’s Fate

At one point, on the banks of a confluence where two rivers ran together like closing thighs, there was a certain boatman. This boatman, name of Gur, had a fine long pole (not too bendy, not too strong) with which to move his long wide boat upon the water. Gur slept with his pole, lest it go missing. Then one evening while he was ferrying a few paying passengers from one put-in to the next, Gur’s pole got stuck in thick river-bottom mud and muck and he lost his grip and the pole sank out of sight. Cursing, Gur leapt into the water and dove for the pole. Long minutes passed and Gur’s nubile daughter Guri, at the prow of the boat, began to wail. Gur did not come back up. They found him later downstream. This is how the girl Guri became a very young boatman with a shoddy pole.

The thing about Guri is that she knew everybody. All the fares on her boat. They didn’t necessarily know each other all too often, but everybody knew Guri. And somehow she knew everybody back. She just had a mind for it. Who went with whom and how the families fell out. Names. All the names Guri knew. But only one name made her sing: Tuc. Tuc drank and threw dice, but early in their acquaintance he’d made bold to say that Guri would make a good mother. This observation of Tuc’s about Guri had won her over, so she sang his name in the dark. One syllable songs are short, but carry on the water.

Guri’s favorite disgruntlement was that there was no word for girl boatman. It was poling-upriver hard to get more than a grunt out of half her older passengers, because they didn’t see clear to it being right for her to be doing a man’s job. Tuc suggested ‘boatwoman’, but Guri allowed as how that was more the busty mascot off the bow of a ship than a person who poled for a living. Tuc took to riding with Guri quite frequently. Then one night, he brought her a new pole, and it was a good pole.

Not long after the new pole, Tuc convinced Guri to elope with him a ways downriver to a town where he had prospects. When they got there, they traded the boat and pole for two goats. Guri was better with people than with animals, so Tuc tended the herd while she met and memorized every person she could find. Soon she had so much work taken in to do for folks that what with going to the big, clean houses to perform services inbetweentimes, and attending in good turn to the day’s worth of all the waiting piecemeal work filling their modest house, Guri was too busy to make a baby.

Guri got fed up with being too busy to make a baby and made a baby. Tuc split. Guri’s popularity made her fatherless child the ward of the town. Everybody parented him. That’s why he grew up angry. His name was Gur, after his grandfather. Boy did he have a chip on his shoulder about being told what to do. Everybody told him when and where to jump. Only Guri could make him ask how high. Usually his answer would be jump why? The thing about having a whole village full of parents is that they are going to contradict each other and some of them are bound to be weird people.

About the Author: 

It seems my life has been a testament to questionable decisions and lost opportunities. However, my wife of 39 years says she knows of nothing in the record to justify such unfettered optimism.

I am a member of the last generation of rural veterinarians who remember working with cows that had names and personalities and dairymen who worked in the barn with their families. I’m also part of the first wave of the Baby Boomers, crusty codgers who are writing their wills and grousing about kids who don’t pay attention to what old men say, and can even be damned condescending at times.

I was raised on a dairy farm in West-central Wisconsin and exhibited Holstein cattle and Clydesdale horses from the time I was ten-years-old until I graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State in 1969. I practiced veterinary medicine on Wisconsin dairy farms until 1988, when my wife and I packed up our four children and I entered graduate school at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul.
I developed the first ante-mortem diagnostic test for proliferative enteritis, a diarrheal disease of swine caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. The test is now the standard diagnostic test for the disease. With adoption of the test, it was also found that L. intracellularis is the most common cause of post-weaning diarrhea in horses.

After 19 years of work on the research and development of bovine and swine vaccines, I am retired. I’m using the scraps of what I can remember to spin stories of a family and veterinary practice, stories that could almost be true. Some of the true stories that didn’t make it into my books can be found on this website.

My Thoughts

Pop Goes the Weasel is the second book in the series featuring Detective Helen Grace. Helen is good at what she does, is a flawed individual with a dark side that enables her to find the bad guy. Murdered men are showing up with their hearts ripped out and delivered to a loved one. Who is committing these horrific murders? It appears that it is someone who is punishing men for visiting prostitutes. Buy why? 

Helen and her team race against the clock to find out who is committing these murders and stop them before there are more. As with Eeny Meeny, there is definitely a creepy element to the plot. There are characters carried over from the first novel, except that Helen now has a different boss. There were some serious repercussions from the previous case, which includes a co-worker returning to duty after her injuries that occurred in Eeny Meeny. Plus there is a reporter who seems to undermine Helen at every turn. A taut thriller which has an ending that I did not see coming.
