The Widow by Fiona Barton Review! #TheWidow

New American Library
Hardcover;
978-1-101-99026-1;
February 16, 2016; $25.95)

An electric, thought-provoking debut, THE WIDOW has been sold in over twenty countries and has drawn comparisons to recent thriller successes The Girl on the Train and The Silent WifeGlamour UK called it “The Most Anticipated Book of 2016 and said it would fill the void left by Girl on the TrainPopSugar and Sacramento Bee included it in their lists of buzziest winter books.

In THE WIDOW, Jean Taylor is the wife of a man who may be a monster. Though never convicted, Glen Taylor was the prime suspect in a horrible crime that captivated people across England. Now, a week after Glen’s death, journalist Kate Waters shows up at Jean’s door, like so many others before, seeking answers—and the scoop of a lifetime. Though Jean kept quiet during the media circus surrounding the trial, she is finally ready to break her silence.

The desperate search for answers—both in the past and the present—takes shape through the interlocking narratives of the widow, the journalist, and the detective who never forgot the case. Each has a story to tell—but some might be more truthful than others. Their stories converge in a deft, heart-stopping ending.

Says Barton, a British journalist who has worked for the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph, of her inspiration for the book: As a journalist, I spent a lot of time in court. In the big casesnotorious and terrible crimes that led the newsI would find myself watching the wives of those standing in the dock and wondering what they really knew, or allowed themselves to know.”

Advance Praise for Fiona Barton’s THE WIDOW:

“[An] exceptional debut from British journalist Barton, who circles her story as if it were a lurking panther, unseen but viscerally sensed….she tells her tale with a realism and restraint that add to its shattering impact.”
Publishers Weekly, STARRED review

“The ultimate psychological thriller. Barton carefully unspools this dark, intimate tale of a terrible crime, a stifling marriage, and the lies spouses tell not just to each other, but to themselves in order to make it through. The ending totally blew me away!”
—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Fiona Barton’s THE WIDOW is a fast-paced, heart-stopping debut. Jean Taylor—the widow—is heroine and anti-heroine, naïve and savvy, dominated and dominating; in short, utterly compelling. Sure to thrill fans of The Girl on the Train and The Husband’s Secret, I raced through this in one nail-biting sitting.”
—Catherine McKenzie, international bestselling author of Hidden

“A marriage is a public union, but can also act as a wall hiding an inner world of secrets. Fiona Barton's THE WIDOW grabs hold of this insight and runs with it, twisting all the way to the end.”
—Andrew Pyper, #1 international bestselling author of The Demonologist

“Stunning from start to finish. I devoured it in one sitting. The best book I've read this year. If you liked Gone Girl, you'll love this. Fiona Barton is a major new talent.”
—M. J. Arlidge, international bestselling author of Eeny Meeny

“Dark, compelling and utterly unputdownable. My book of the year so far.”
—C.L. Taylor, international bestselling author of Before I Wake

“A brilliant, enthralling debut.”
—Jill Mansell, New York Times bestselling author of Thinking of You

THE WIDOW is a twisty psychological suspense that held me spellbound. Fiona Barton delves into the darkest reaches of the husband and wife relationship and the secrets they keep. THE WIDOW is a beautifully written novel of psychological suspense that takes readers on a disturbing journey into the mind of a woman whose husband may be guilty of a horrendous crime. Fiona Barton’s skill as a journalist is on full, brilliant display in THE WIDOW.”
—Linda Castillo, New York Times bestselling author of After the Storm

My Thoughts:

"The Widow
Wednesday, June 9, 2010

I can hear the sound of her crunching up the path. Heavy footed in high heels. She's almost at the door, hesitating and smoothing her hair out of her face. Nice outfit: jacket with big buttons, decent dress underneath, and glasses perched on her head. Not a Jehovah's Witnesses or from the Labour party. Must be a reporter, but not the usual. She's my second one today--fourth this week, and it's only Wednesday. I bet she says, "I'm sorry to bother you at such a difficult time". They all say that and put on that stupid face. Like they care." --- from Chapter one of The Widow by Fiona Barton.

How well do you know your spouse or significant other? Maybe you don't know him/her as well as you thought you did. What if that person committed a horrible crime? Would you stand by their side?

This is the premise of The Widow, Jean Taylor and her husband, Glen, have been married over a decade and she is somewhat happy in her marriage. They were in love when they married but sometimes complacency can make that love change.

The Widow starts out in 2010, after Jean's husband has died, hit by a bus. The reason for the reporters? Well, in October of 2006 a two-year-old little girl by the name of Bella disappears from her front yard. You may wonder what a little girl was doing out in the yard all alone. Her mum, Dawn, just went inside to make their tea and things happen very fast. There are predators out there who prey on children and that is what happened in this case.

Who took Bella? Glen is a suspect and undergoes interrogation after interrogation and never reveals what he knows. Jean sticks by her man, if you will, and they weather the storm of accusations by the press, neighbors, and family, but this goes on until 2010 and the death of Glen. There is no real evidence that Glen had anything to do with Bella's disappearance.

This story is told by different viewpoints, Jean being the main one, the reporter, Kate Walters and the investigating detective, Bob Sparkes. Through alternating chapters, the reader learns more about these people and the circumstances of not only Bella's disappearance but of Glen's death.

The Widow is being compared to the Best Seller The Girl on the Train, of which I have read. It definitely has a similarity as they are both psychological suspense in nature. The protagonists are both women in a situation not of their own making. I found the characters to be well developed, and as I read this book, I kept coming back to the question, how well do we know another person? Everyone has secrets, some minor in nature and some people have secrets that are dangerous. This book encompasses both of these scenarios as we learn what kind of people that Jean and Glen were.

I read this book in a few sittings and that is an accomplishment for me lately, and I really liked it. Kind of had an idea about the ending but was not sure. The author writes in a way that grabs your attention in the first chapter. I give this book five stars for writing and plot!

Lilies of the Bowery by Lily R. Mason Review!

After an arduous voyage from Napoli in the summer of 1914, eighteen-year-old Joan Passerini arrives in New York City with her mother and brother in hopes of building a better life. Finding neither the milk or honey America had promised, Joan is quickly disenchanted with the city; the heat and noise and poverty are oppressive, and her father, who journeyed ahead to find work and accommodations, is nowhere to be found. Tucked into a disorganized laundry, Joan meets an unlikely companion named Paloma Morello, who is as secretive as she is beautiful. As Joan develops an intense attraction to her, she discovers that though things aren't always as they seem, all love is sanctuary.

Lily R. Mason is an author from California. She holds a B.A. in psychology and a Master's in Counseling. She has written novels about queer women in many genres: coming of age, domestic drama, multiple realities, and historical romance. In 2015, she plans to publish two additional novels: a feminist and multicultural retelling of classic children's stories, and a contemporary piece about life in the rural Southwest. Her goal as a writer is to inspire hope and kindness in readers around the world and to give voice to the women who are often written out of other stories.
Go to the authors website to learn more, there is a lot of interesting information and pictures of early NYC and especially the Bowery.

My Thoughts

Lilies of the Bowery tells the story of a young woman and her journey with her mother and brother from Italy to New York City. Joan Passerini, her mother Francesca and her brother Luca leave Italy to come to America to be with Giovanni Passerini, father, and husband, who came to America to find work and a place for them all to live. When they arrive Giovanni is not there to meet them and they end up going to a church for refuge where a place to live and jobs are obtained for Francesca and Luca. Francesca is pregnant but must still work. Joan, on the other hand, has a disability that makes it difficult for her to walk, she has undiagnosed cerebral palsy that only affects her legs.

Joan wants to contribute to the household and finds a job as a seamstress at a laundry run by Paloma. Paloma is a beautiful young woman who is quiet, haunted and secretive. Joan comes to have an attraction to Paloma and it is reciprocated. The love between the two grows from kisses to a sweet love affair. They need to keep this quiet as a relationship such as they have is a sin.
As Joan continues to work at the laundry, she learns Paloma's secrets. The reader not only learns about this lesbian love affair but we see how life was back in 1914 in NYC. The Bowery could be a dangerous place to live and tenement life was a hard life, especially since they don't speak English. There are good things though in Joans life with Paloma, they go to the Nickelodeon to see Charlie Chaplin. Joan has her first ride in the Subway which terrifies her, and she goes to Central Park for the first time.
In writing this story it is obvious that the author has done a lot of research into this time in American history, prior to WWI, the hardships of the immigrants, whether Italian, Irish or Chinese. Language barriers and class were definitely a hard thing to overcome. Although Joan and her family and even Paloma, appeared to have a bit more than some, but everyone had to work.

I found this book interesting in that the lesbian relationship that Joan and Paloma have is very sweet, but they know that they need to keep it a secret from everyone. In spite of this, their relationship grows. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly.

I received a copy of this book for review and my honest thoughts.

"The premise was not one I had heard of before and, while it did seem a little far fetched, it was fun and interesting. I liked Delsie's determination to make things right with her sister and her willingness to do most anything to make it happen."

I Am A Reader - Five Reasons to Date a Pony Express Rider

Adventurous Spirit

Express riders had to be adventurers at heart. To face what they did daily, in order to deliver the mail, they must have thrilled at the prospect of conquering danger over and over again. They didn’t observe life from the safety of the sidelines—they threw themselves into the fray and made a name for themselves that has endured.

"Fun characters and a wonderful plot, readers will not want to put this novel down. I would recommend this novel to readers of historical romance."

"Like all good romance stories, this one is full of sweet moments and crazy moments too. The trip has a lot of action and the characters are ones you will fall in love with while you are reading. I love the ending of the story! If you’re a fan of clean, Christian romance, you will definitely love The Express Rider’s Lady."

Mel's Shelves - Five Reasons Why Being a Pony Express Rider Was the Ultimate in Adventure Professions

With only a trusty steed and a pistol or two for companions, Express riding was not for the lonely or afraid. Riders would spend hours in the saddle, only encountering people at stops every twelve to twenty miles, and then for just a few brief minutes as the mail saddle was thrown onto the back of a fresh mount. A number of riders were also orphans with little or no family waiting for them back at their home base.

"Stacy Henrie did a fantastic job of giving her characters depth and humanity. Their stories unfold gently and I felt like I was right there getting to know them. . . . I really loved this book. It was a great western historical fiction."

I used a hard copy map, one which included the entire Pony Express trail on it, to mark where Delsie and Myles would be stopping each night. Not only did this help me know which home stations they would be lodging in, but I was also able to see which prominent settlements or landmarks they would pass by on a given day. All the stations mentioned in the book were actually used by the Pony Express.

"A truly sweet historical with some surprising twists and turns. . . . If you are looking for an exciting and romantic reading escape into the Old West days gone by, you should definitely check out Stacy Henrie's appealing story The Express Rider's Lady."

Dixie n Dottie - Review

"This was a beautifully written story that involves a lot of adventure, trust, love and experiencing the unknown. . . . Anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction with adventure and romance should read this book. You will love it! "

"The Express Rider’s Lady by Stacy Henrie not only provides a sweet romance but also gives readers a compelling glimpse into the perilous conditions once common to cross terrain we now take for granted. Smooth writing, vivid settings, and heartstopping action bring the characters and the history to life. A quick read, as typical to the Love Inspired line, but very entertaining!"

The Adventures of Charlie Smithers by C.W.Lovatt Spotlight!

About the Book

The time is the nineteenth century. The place, the Serengeti Plain, where one Charlie Smithers – faithful manservant to the arrogant bone-head, Lord Brampton (with five lines in Debrett, and a hopeless shot to boot) – becomes separated from his master during an unfortunate episode with an angry rhinoceros, thereby launching Charlie on an odyssey into Deepest Darkest Africa, and subsequently into the arms of the beautiful Loiyan…and that’s where the trouble really begins.

Maasai warriors, xenophobic locals, or evil Arab slavers, the two forbidden lovers encounter everything that the unforgiving jungle can throw at them.

Read an Excerpt

Chapter One
“Gun, Smithers!”
Lord Brampton held his hand out expectantly; arm rigid,
fingertips twiddling with impatience; all the while never taking his
eyes off the fearsome black rhino grazing placidly in the distance.
I carefully handed him the heavy elephant gun, making
sure the muzzle was pointing well away from either his lordship
or myself. Two great bullets were loaded in those chambers. The
hammers were at half-cock, but I’d learned the hard way it was
always best to be safe…insofar as that was possible. I regret to
say, however, that when in the company of my master, when he
was in the company of his guns, that possibility didn’t always
exist.

But, so far so good; Lord Brampton’s fingers curled
around the polished walnut of the stock. There was a momentary
unease when one digit slid unerringly past the trigger guard, but
then it was out again without any harm being done.
That part of my duty successfully completed, I pulled the
small brass telescope from my belt and leveled it at the beast. A
moment later the head of the bull wobbled into view. He was big
to the naked eye at a hundred yards, but massive in the lens, his
great horns jutting up and down while he grazed. We were
downwind of him and, so far, unsighted.
Lord Brampton leveled the great rifle at the brute and
sited down the shiny blue steel of the twin barrels.
“Head will look good in the gunroom, what?” His
lordship rumbled confidently in a voice too loud to be a whisper.
The rhino’s ears twitched, and I felt my grip on the telescope
tighten, but he was only flicking away some flies.
My own voice was a hoarse whistle as I cautioned His
Grace to silence.

“Nonsense,” he scoffed, “Trouble with you, Smithers,
you worry too much.”
I knew better, of course, but I also knew better than to
remonstrate further. My master was in one of his more
quarrelsome moods. It was always this way when his old wound
was bothering him.

To accent the point, an angry growl erupted from his
abdomen – the medical legacy of having so much of his
intestines removed at Balaclava.
The rhino’s ears twitched again, then centered; his great
head rising while he peered short-sightedly in our direction. I
found myself softly keening, willing Lord Brampton to pull the
trigger.
At last there was a deafening report as the gun
discharged. A few yards beyond and to the left of the beast a
large spurt of dust heralded the usual complete miss. With a
sinking heart, I focused back on him. When I did so, I saw that
he, in turn, was now focusing on me, his eyes wide with surprise.
Then angrily, they narrowed.
Oh dear.
