Book Cover
A Man. A Vampire. A love story.
A MORTAL INDISCRETION: AUTHOR'S CUT
Barbra E. Ross
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Suspense
Publication Date: April 27, 2016
One night changed everything for bachelor Justin Bertolli. A womanizer at heart, never quite ready to settle down, he meets the woman who would change his life forever. Ambra Taylor is that woman, but is she all that Justin bargained for?
Told from a male protagonist point of view, A Mortal Indiscretion delivers wholly unique narratives that don’t succumb to the same old recycled concepts. Everything unravels in Justin’s world. Although Ambra is a vampire, she is the vulnerable one of the two characters, providing a refreshing twist on standard tales. She is not waiting for her prince to come save her on his white horse. She simply desires love, to feel human love again and will do anything to protect the love of Justin.
When Justin discovers the truth about who and what she is, will he still love her? Will he still want her? Find out, as their hearts collide in this epic tale of love.
Fabulous book. Out of the ordinary and unusual love story/vampire book. Very well written and a big read which had my attention from the beginning. Love the characters and plot. Was juicy, exciting and hated to put down. Wanted to keep reading and reading but didn't want the story to end.

I have just finished reading this book and I loved it. I was completely captivated by the whole story ... The skill of the writer was her ability to make you feel that you were actually watching their romance unfold opposed to reading about it. ... If you love a brilliant romance twists and turns along the way, then this is an absolute must read . . . you won't be disappointed.

Excerpt 2 from Chapter One

We were led to a table back in a dimly lit corner. I was glad. I wanted no interruptions.  The waiter came and poured our waters. I was watching her every move. She took the menu and opened it. I did mine and looked over it at her. Her eyes were scanning the menu and I just watched her. The waiter asked what we wanted to start with.
  “I’ll take a soda,” I told him.
“And for the lady,” he inquired.
She placed the menu down and looked into my eyes.
  “Him,” she stated, plainly.
“Pardon me,” the waiter tried to clarify.
I stared at her, stunned by her words.
“The same for the lady,” I answered quickly, not looking his way. He left us, shaking his head.
Her scent filled the air. I reached out my hands and she took them.
“What is your name,” I asked softly, loving the look of her eyes over the glow of the candle on the table.
   “Ambra,” she answered.
   “Ambra,” I repeated.
She smiled and let out a soft laugh. Her hands were so soft in mine.
“I have been thinking about what happened the night we met, it was very…” I started.
“Intense,” she finished. “I cannot forget it either. I did not plan on that happening.” She had a slight English accent.
“I know, right? I…I have never done it…. I mean… done that… before…either,” I added. I shook my head; I had never tripped over my own words before.
“Is your lady friend terribly hurt? I did not mean to cause such a commotion.”
“Oh, you mean Racheal?” I snickered. “She was angry with me, but it’s ok. I mean, I have never done anything like that to her before. She is just someone I see on a casual basis,” I tried to explain.
“So this Racheal, is she… is she committed to you?”
   “Committed?” I questioned.
“Is she, are you two… how do you say it…seriously involved?”
“No, no. She is not my girlfriend if that is what you mean,” I answered. I looked right in her eyes. “I don’t have anyone who is that close to me.”  I squeezed her hands. I wanted her to know I was interested in her.
She became silent a moment. I felt a tinge of anxiety Maybe she thought I was lying. Or maybe she thought I was the biggest jerk on the planet. I spoke quickly.
“Are you involved with someone?” I asked.
  She shook her head.
“No. I do not have a lover,” she stated.
I breathed a sigh of relief. How she could be single was beyond me. She was so fucking gorgeous.
“Do you want one,” I blurted. I did not know what was wrong with me. “I’m sorry, what I mean is are…. are you looking for someone to…”
“I want you to be my lover, Justin.” All she said. My mouth dropped, but I caught it and clamped up tight.
The waiter came and placed our drinks on the table. He asked for our orders. I told him mine and she shook her head at him. I took a sip of water. I was speechless. No one had ever come right out and said that to me before.
“I believe, that I am infatuated with you,” she continued. I took another gulp of water. I was suddenly wanting a drink. A good stiff drink. “I have tried to calm my desires about you, but I cannot. I have only thought of you since that evening. You are invading my every thought. It is quite amusing to me.”
The waiter brought some bread sticks and I picked one up. I took a bite and could only stare at her. I absolutely did not know what to say. She was so forward, so honest. I liked it, but I didn’t know how to handle it. I had never been approached that way before. I usually laid down the lines. I was taken off guard.
“Justin. Are you not going to speak to me? Have I said too much? Have I misspoken?”
“Say it again. Say my name,” I found myself saying. It was her voice, like music saying my name.
She smiled a little and whispered my name again. It sent warm shivers down my spine.
“How do you know my name? I mean, how did you know how to find me,” I asked.
“I am a little disconcerted, embarrassed…. I have followed you, that eve…” she began.
“I am glad you did,” I said. I was letting it all out. Never done that before.
“Well, I did. And I want an answer,” she said and I was confused.
“I’m sorry. What was the question?”
“Are you going to be my lover? Tonight?”

About Barbra E. Ross

Author Pic
Barbra E Ross lives in Michigan and is a nurse by day, lover of fiction at night. When people ask me what my book is about, I pause a moment because it is not so simple to describe. It is a vampire romance, I say and then, I pray that doesn't scare them away. Because what are books really? I believe that books are a way to escape the daily routines of life.
I wanted to take an ordinary man and put him in fantastic situations. To bring a bit of fantasy down to reality. It is a love story at it's heart. If I can take the reader on a journey and give them a laugh, cry, or simply bring a smile to their face, then it is all worth it. This story helped me through rough times in my life, and I can only hope it will do the same for the reader.

"Good grief, boy!" Gramps yelled. "You drive like an old lady on a Sunday afternoon drive. Don't be afraid to push down on that gas pedal."
"Gramps," Wil sighed. "I'm going the speed limit. Anyway, what is the hurry?"
"The hurry is I hate being a passenger, especially yours," he said, emphasizing each word. "And watch your mouth, boy. You aren't too old for me to give a whoppin' to."
"You're just ticked because they won't let you drive anymore. It's your own fault for not taking care of your eyes. And for the record, I'm not exactly thrilled at the moment having you as a passenger."
"You better watch your attitude, or I'll take this truck back."
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was Dad's, right? And I think you told me he wanted you to give it to me. Guess that means it isn't yours to take."
Gramps got a sour look on his stern face, like he'd just sucked on a lime. "Don't you be talking to me like I'm some crazy old coot who's lost his mind. I remember what I said. Shoulda charged you for it, considering the lip I have to put up with every time I'm gonna be in here with you."
"And what makes you think I'm going to drive you around everywhere in this beautiful truck? I'll chauffeur you around in my car."
"That piece of crap? Hmph. Forget it."
Wil stared at the road ahead of them. "You could take a cab, you know. Or the bus." Sam Hill help the poor drivers.
"Nah," Gramps said, slugging back the rest of his coffee and shoving the empty cup in a plastic bag. "I get much more pleasure out of torturing you than I would a stranger."
I noticed. "Alrighty, then. So you got a plan for us, or are we just going to keep going until we run out of gas?"
Gramps crossed his arms over his chest and looked out his window. "First stop is gonna be Elie."
Wil released a sharp breath and squinted. "Seriously? There's, like, 100 people living there."
"Six hundred and fifty."
"Close enough. And I'm sure the census people were able to gather them all in one place and count them at once. C'mon, Gramps. What could possibly be in that small town worth checking out? If we drive straight on, we can get to Portage la Prairie for lunch—"
"Just because a place isn't all lit up like Vegas doesn't mean it shouldn't be visited," Gramps interrupted. "Some places need to be seen because they're gold mines for memories. We're stopping at Elie."
Wil had a smart-butt retort clinging to the tip of his tongue, but he held it there after giving Gramps a side-glance. The old man rested his chin on his right fist and stared out his window.
"Fine. I guess we're stopping at Elie," Wil mumbled.

Like my vote even counted.

Deathbringer by Tamara Grantham Book Blitz and Giveaway!

Deathbringer
Tamara Grantham
(Fairy World M.D., Olive Kennedy)
Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing
Publication date: April 25th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Some heroes are fated to save the world. Others are meant to destroy it…
Olive Kennedy is all about positive thinking. She’s been stuck on Earth for the past four months, waiting for the spring equinox to arrive so she can return to Fairy World — but she’s staying positive. She’s hopeful she’ll once again see her handsome Viking fiancé who’s waiting for her. She’s optimistic that her mission to reclaim the sword of Dracon — a sword of King Arthur fame and the only weapon capable of killing Theht — won’t result in death and destruction. And then there’s the small matter of an asteroid that’s been ripped out of its orbit and is hurtling toward Earth…no biggie.
One last thing — she’s fated to destroy the world. To stop that prophecy from being fulfilled, she may have to sacrifice the one person she loves the most.
Good thing she’s staying positive.

The Cat and the Computer: Background Information for Fairy World MD

When I asked my readers what they wanted to know more about concerning the Fairy World MD series, I got KULL, the CAT, and the LAPTOP!!
I’ve already written a character interview with Kull, so this post focuses on the CAT! and the LAPTOP!
PART I: THE CAT!

Name: Han Solo
Color: Gray
Owner: Olive Kennedy
Favorite activities: Stalking birds in the window, chasing socks, napping, eating kitty kibbles, and NAPPING!
What does Han do when Olive is gone? First, Olive feels very bad about leaving Han behind all the time, but since the fate of the two worlds is usually on the line, she doesn’t have much of a choice. Han is not as lonely as some might think. In the earlier books, Olive’s elderly neighbor checks on him twice a day. Olive doesn’t know, but her neighbor brings over cans of tuna fish and balls of yarn.
Han and the neighbor get along well, although Han always prefers the company of Olive to anyone else.
Later, Olive asks Brent to check on Han. While Han doesn’t get as spoiled, he does like Brent because his hair always smells of that wax that has a faint fishy odor.
Once, two strange-smelling people broke into Olive’s apartment and tore it apart, but Han stayed out of sight under the bed. When the strangers left, Han found an unexpected surprise. The thieves had left the refrigerator opened. They had spilled luscious bologna all over the kitchen floor!
Han ate until his whiskers got greasy and his belly round and uncomfortable. When Brent found him, he brought him back to his place in Houston. At Brent’s house, he finally met up with Olive again, only for her to leave on yet another quest to save all humanity. Le cat sigh…
*This story is continued in Deathbringer.

PART II: The LAPTOP!

Olive made her magical laptop mirror in Boston when she was doing residency training for a year. She worked at a computer lab that doubled as a computer graveyard. Old computers would break and be brought to the lab where parts would be harvested to repair other computers.
For some time, Olive had been trying to find a way to diagnose her patients. She’d found that different types of magic triggered specific memories. For example, if someone had interacted with elves in Faythander, blue magic would trigger their memories. If they interacted with dragons, green magic would appear, and so on…
She created her five figurines before she made the laptop, but she needed a way to keep them organized.
One day, while gutting out an old laptop, she had the idea to use it as a box for her figurines. She replaced the computer keys with a velvet lining, and she replaced the screen with a mirror that she enchanted with Faythander magic.
The laptop is also a symbol for those savvy enough to pick up on it. She creates the mirror box on Earth, using a piece of Earth Kingdom junk. It represents a time of her life when she spent more time on Earth than in Fairy World. Earth is a place she always tries to fit into by never succeeds, just as she fits her statuettes from Faythander into a piece of Earth technology.
Later, she’ll use other various types of boxes, which represent differing aspects of her life. One represents her lost childhood, and another the person she’s always meant to be—but if I told you everything, I’d give it all away, and what’s the fun in that?

EXCERPT:
I stood and crossed to my bedroom, then grabbed my backpack and slung it over my shoulder. After grabbing my temporary mirror case out of a drawer, I placed it on top of my dresser.
I wasn’t sure if I should cringe or laugh as I scanned my new mirror. I’d found it at the dollar store after a frustrating day of trying to create a new mirror box with no success. I’d bought it because it was absurd and to remind myself that it was temporary.
The plastic box was pink with the name BARBIE scrolled on the top. Inside was a foam liner that had once held five nail polish bottles. I’d cut the foam to make larger slots. Now, it held my five figurines that represented the races of Faythander: Dragon, elf, Wult, pixie, and goblin.
After unlocking the latch, I opened the lid. “You’re fabulous! Inside and out!” sang to me in a bubble-gum voice as I propped the lid open.
As I said, temporary solution. Extremely temporary. It had a mirror under the lid and was the perfect size for my figurines, so it worked. For now.
Scanning my figurines, I found the Wult and removed it from the foam, then propped it upright against the mirror. I needed to get to the Wultlands, and this would be the easiest way to do so.
I ignored the glittery scrolling along the edges of the mirror and focused on the glass. Taking a deep breath, I paused before touching my fingers to the mirror.
Months ago, the portals had started acting erratically. I’d thought the problem had been solved after we’d restored the fairies’ stone, but when I’d returned to Earth four months ago, the portal had almost torn me apart. I’d gotten several stitches in my abdomen because the crossing had been so violent. Since then, I hadn’t once been able to open a portal, but tonight, I had no choice. I needed to return to Faythander before the equinox, and I had one thing in my favor—I hadn’t tried opening a portal with my new Barbie box yet.
Here’s to hoping my luck improved, I thought. Then again, this was my luck we were talking about. Yeah, probably not.
Carefully, I placed my fingertips to the screen, inhaled a deep breath, and then conjured the word to open the portal.
Magic flowed from my heart, through my arms and hands, and into the mirror. Gold and amber swirls licked like fire over my skin as the magic interacted with the mirror, mingling with the blue glow coming from the plastic case.
The power grew inside me as the portal opened. Wind swirled around me until the room disappeared and I floated in a void. Voices came from somewhere. Soft whispers. Among them was a familiar one. The cold, detached voice of Theht.
I am here. I am waiting.
I’d gotten better at tuning her out, but being in a place like this, between worlds, made it almost impossible to keep her away.
Soon, we shall destroy the world together. Deathbringer.
The wind grew stronger and faster, wrapping around me, squeezing the air from my lungs. It compressed me until I couldn’t breathe. Pain coursed through my nerve endings as the pressure weighed me down. I felt as if I’d been buried under millions of tons of sand.
I cried out, but couldn’t hear my voice over the wind. Tears leaked from my eyes. I felt their warmth on my cheeks. In a desperate attempt to survive, I focused on the magic within me, unleashing every ounce, pouring it into the portal to keep it steady.
I thought for sure I was dead when I hit the ground. I landed awkwardly, my shoulder and hips taking the brunt of the impact. My mirror, on the other hand, made a graceful landing in a pile of leaves beside me.
I lay on the ground, panting for air, staring at the faded blue sky through the patchwork of branches with budding green shoots.
“Never again,” I muttered between gasps. Next time, I would find a Viking ship and cross through an underground ocean filled with man-eating sea-snakes before using a portal. “Never. Again.”
On the bright side, at least I’d finally made it back to Faythander. The $.99 investment into the Barbie mirror wasn’t such a bad buy after all.

Engadine Aerie by Bluette Matthey Book Spotlight!

My protagonist, Hardy Durkin, is a twenty-seven-year-old hunk who is a crack marksman, trained in SIGINT, and fluent in four languages.  Interesting set of subskills, yes?  He gave working in research and development a shot but life in a rabbit warren wasn't a good fit for him, so he started Durkin Tours, an outfitter company specializing in European treks.  Mayhem, murder, and madness have a habit of stalking Hardy wherever he goes.
Blurb for Engadine Aerie:

Engadine Aerie takes place at the annual Skimarathon in glitzy St. Moritz, Switzerland (imagine 13,000 skiers in one race!), where Hardy gets embroiled in a tangle of murder, falconry, weaponized drones, and arms-smuggling.  Hardy agrees to help a friend launch her cross-country ski tour business in St. Moritz, and gets way more than he bargained for.  His first day on the job he is smitten by an exotic from the Mideast who skis over a corpse buried in the snow.  No stranger to murder and other intrigue, Hardy takes point in the following police inquiry (as a bystander, of course), but he is soon enmeshed in preventing another murder.  Then comes the not-inconsequential matter of a terrorist attack on the finish line of the Skimarathon.  Hardy's past relationship with the French Foreign Legion gives him an entree to working with TIGRIS, Switzerland's elite tactical police unit, to thwart an illegal arms deals he stumbles into, and his meddling puts him in the cross-hairs of a sadistic anarchist who excels at poisoning her victims.

Bluette Matthey is a 3rd generation Swiss-American and an avid lover of European cultures.  She has decades of travel and writing experience.  She is a keen reader of mysteries, especially those that immerse the reader in the history, inhabitants, culture, and cuisine of new places.  Her passion for travel, except airports (where she keeps a mystery to pass the time), is shared by her husband, who owned a tour outfitter business in Europe.
Bluette particularly loves to explore regions that are not on the “15 days in Europe” itineraries.  She also enjoys little-known discoveries, such as those in the London Walks, in well-known areas.  She firmly believes that walking and hiking bring her closer to the real life of any locale.  Bluette maintains a list of hikes and pilgrimages throughout Europe for future exploration.  She lives in Le Locle, Switzerland, with her husband and band of loving cats.  Bluette can often be seen hiking in the Jura Mountains along the Swiss-French frontier.  For more information, please visit Bluette’s web site.  You can also find her on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and Niume.

They had been skiing about fifteen minutes; the ski lift for downhill had just come into view. Suddenly, Maryam veered off the trail slightly, into the snow. She lost her balance, as though she’d hit something and, try as she might to keep upright, her outstretched arms pin-wheeling for equilibrium, she lost the battle and fell on her derrière.
Hardy skied to where she had landed, a look of puckish humor on his handsome face. His gold aviator sunglasses hid his eyes, which were also smiling. “You OK? Need some help?” he asked.
Maryam was embarrassed. She never fell. “Of course I’m OK!” she snapped. “I ran over something.”
“A rock?” Hardy queried.
She glanced up to see if he was making a fool of her. “No, “she said thoughtfully. “It was something softer.” She began brushing away the snow at the spot where she’d run aground. Something vivid blue appeared. She brushed more, and an arm appeared.
“Hold on, Maryam,” Hardy said, releasing his boots from his skis. He stepped around where she knelt and brushed the snow off a man’s face, the snow stained a rusty pink near his head. His sightless eyes were a very dark brown, as were his hair and eyebrows. The once youthful face was ageless in death, and pale.
When Maryam caught sight of the face she let out a scream. Then another. “Najib! Najib!” she shrieked, and broke down into sobs.
Hardy bundled Maryam up in his arms and moved her away from the body. He suspected they were, logistically, in the middle of a crime scene and didn’t want to disturb it any more than they already had. Phil Hostelbrink had skied back to where they were after hearing Maryam’s shrieks. His steely, blue-gray eyes and lawyer’s mind assessed the situation in an instant.
“That’s a hell of a discovery, Mr. Durkin,” he began.
“Please, call me Hardy,” Hardy replied.
“Hardy,” he said, extending a gloved hand. “Phil Hostelbrink. New York. I’m an attorney, and for what it’s worth, I suspect you’ve just skied into one hell of a mess.”
Hardy grimaced, and hoped to hell Phil Hostelbrink wasn’t also a prophet.
